Electronic music usually profits from simplicity, a point the Field's Axel Willner understood well when he made From Here We Go Sublime. Hailing from Sweden, Willner's record has a weightless allure built out of droning spaces and populated with puffy cloud melodies that float and hover. It's not exactly minimalist, because the layers are too complex and full of forward motion. But the assured way they repeat and loop into a dance-friendly texture would make both Brian Eno and Underworld proud.

FHWGS has no interest in the usual peaks and valleys of trance, and yet its consistent anthemic oomph makes it a distant relative of that oft-derided genre. Willner's patience and his emphasis on muted beats enable him to get maximum impact with only slight tweaks. "Over the Ice" sets the table with soft tones and scattered, wordless voices before dropping a hyper cross-rhythm, while glitch-y sidebars frame the exceedingly kind melody that drives "A Paw in My Voice." Even when the BPM notch gets kicked up on a relative burner like "Everyday," it fits right in with the record's benevolent disposition. It's brilliant stuff, a less-is-more epic that wafts onto the dance floor like a gust of summer wind. --Matthew Cooke

Cool, sparse, driving...just a few of the many descriptive words that come to mind in attempting that exceedingly difficult task--namely, putting into words what an album does to the listener. Subjectivity is inherent, from the quantum level to the playing [the] field level. That all being said, as far as this reviewer is convinced, 'From Here We Go Sublime' is one of the finest works of art released in the past year. The electronic genre is not especially known for strong albums; however, The Field's debut LP follows an exquisite narrative arc, with a constant rhythm pounding throughout the duration. "A Paw in My Face", "The Little Heart Beats So Fast", and the final cut--the title cut--are standouts in a crowded field...pun moderately intended. And every single track is both listenable and worthy of one of the writer's favorite movie quotes: "Good title". Buy this album and transcend into the Here and Now.

The Field mastermind Axel Willner came seemingly out of nowhere to do the impossible: up the profile of the already do-no-wrong Kompakt Records and keep the label's sound intact while giving it the twist nobody wanted to admit that it needed. In the same vein as (and on par with) Luomo's Vocalcity, From Here We Go Sublime could go down in history as the album that makes minimal techno accessible, without the need to add vocals or pander to a lower common denominator. But while Sublime is far from "stupid music," it's a refreshingly simple and aerated take on textural techno at a time when too many electronic musicians trip over their own mixer cords, and it thrives on thrust and clarity rather than on strained beauty. Pop music has always been about taking a few key ingredients and flying them to the moon. By looping only crucial elements--sometimes from his own machines and sometimes from others' (who knew that bits of '80s adult-contempo cheese could sound so wondrous?)--over basic kickdrums that highlight what's really important (the melodies), Willner has reflected the joy of pop on a record that doesn't sound like it's trying to win the gold medal, but unbelievably, undeniably does.

For once, believe the hype.......2007-05-16

The music press has gotten into a phase in which it seems like every single critic showers a band/artist/genre with accolades galore only to see them "lose it" an album or two later (anyone remember the VU-inspired garage band revival of a few years ago?).

This album is the best-reviewed album of 2007. This says alot about the music press and the music world in general...it is rare/nonexistent to see an album from the still rather obscure (I use that word lightly) genre of ambient techno be rated "best album of the year".

As for the album itself, do believe the hype. This album is both listenable and interesting when it comes to hearing what The Field (Axel Willner) can do with the deceptively simpleton beats and bleeps. The album is trance-inducing and well worth your attention.

simple or subtle?.......2007-05-05

Hate to admit that I'm one of those just a little baffled by the wondrous reviews this disc has received. It consists of the steady, and rather conservative, rhythms that are used in creating the foundation for basic club music. Nothing more. It is hilarious when one track rapidly fades out just as a guitar starts to be introduced into the mix. If this stuff was public domain, it would be perfect for someone to use for home recording along with whatever lead instruments or vocals they might want to add. But on its own it takes shoe-gazing to a level of serious introversion. I don't know.

Stunning minimal dance debut.......2007-04-16

As I mentioned recently in a review for Gui Boratto's Chromophobia album, it's sometimes difficult to distinguish the exact reasons why one minimal electronic release is better than another one, due to similarities in production and overall sound. Of course, in the end it usually comes down largely to personal perceptions that can't be explained, but other defining characteristics (because of the constructs of the music itself) are nearly always very, very subtle in and of themselves.

From Here We Go Sublime is yet another release on the Kompakt label that is nonetheless completely stunning, and for reasons mentioned above, it's difficult to explain why. The debut release from Sweden's Axel Willner, it drifts somewhere between minimal dance music and repetitive ambience, with beats that clomp along fast enough to fuel movement, but with enough ethereal qualities that you could simply put it on and trip out on the couch with it easily enough as well. Essentially, it's trance music of the highest quality, veering completely leftward of the cheeseball Global Underground crowd, and falling somewhere between the work of Kaito (also on the Kompakt label) and Wolfgang Voigt (aka Gas).

Willner actually has a few things in common with micro-sample sculptor Akufen, but instead of trying to wow you with his cutting ability and a frantic hand, he has pulled out hundreds of little heavily melodic snippets and stutters and scatters them across gorgeous expanses, building tracks slowly and letting them peak subtlety. The release opens with "Over The Ice," a single that was released last year to great acclaim, and for good reason. The piece is a perfect introduction to his sound, with micro samples of vocals that flutter over a relentless 4/4 thump, building basslines, and all kinds of subtle spacial effects.

With ten songs running nearly exactly an hour in length, it's also a remarkably consistent release. "Good Things End" is constructed as many other tracks on the release, with jittery vocals samples over a rambling, rolling beat and some sudden bursts of tweaked noise. Even though the aforementioned "Over The Ice" got his foot in the door, there are actually a slew of tracks on From Here We Go Sublime that are even better. "Everday" is a perfect example, again building with spiraling upward beats and slippery programming while bright, overlapping vocal samples push things higher and higher until the stunning ending.

At ten minutes "The Deal" is the longest track on the album, but doesn't feel a bit weary as it pushes forward with devastating low-end bass and sprays of overdriven noise. It's the closest thing to Gas (who was supposedly one of his biggest musical inspirations) on the release, and manages to sound both hazy and clear as day at the same time. An outstanding debut, From Here We Go Sublime is yet another excellent album from the Kompakt this label and a release that has gotten some of the most play of anything I've heard this year. If you like minimal electronic music at all, you must seek it out.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Folk Music.......2007-03-26

During the late 50 and early 60's folk music was popular and there were a number of groups and musicians performing in this style. Of those groups I found I listened mostly to the Kingston Trio. While it's been more than 50 years since I bought the LP record versions of these two albums, this CD has let me enjoy them all over again.

Two Great Albums on one CD!.......2006-07-03

I was a young child when "Here We Go Again!" came out. My dad bought the album and I listened to it growing up. I recently bought these two albums reissued on one CD, and I love it. You will find several excellent songs, such as "San Miguel," that are not usually included on "Best of" recordings of The Kingston Trio.

Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Best Kingston Trio Collection...EVER!.......2004-08-24

I grew up listening to these two albums (thanks to my parents) and probably memorized every song on both. With all due respect to the rotating members of the Trio, over the years, I don't think anything can compare to the original Shane/Guard/Reynolds group. If your going to buy any Trio disks...get these. Period.

KT Fans: I've been in contact recently with Bob Shane who feels that the current members of the Trio come closest to the sound of the original Shane/Guard/Reynolds lineup. May be worth catching them live. Drop Bob a line...he's super nice!

A great collection of Kingston Trio songs.......2002-12-06

My dad always used to sing these songs to me, and I thought he made them up, but I found this album, and was amazed that all the songs I knew from my childhood were on this disk. It's heavy on sea shanties like Blow Ye Winds and Haul Away. They're very catchy tunes, and more refined than some of the more folksy ones like 'Round About the Mountain and Goober Peas (which I think is the song Michelle Pheiffer sings in the movie with the Bridges brothers). If you like harmonized, vocal songs with really memorable tunes and good lyrics, you'll like them. Some of the songs are covers, but they have a nice way of arranging them.

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

This is my favorite purchase of the last few years. This album doesn't get old with me. It is great hard rock from beginning to end, and it's definitely Pillar's best work. I also have Fireproof and The Reckoning, and I love those albums, but this collection of songs is on another level of greatness. Perfect hard rock with a great message.
All rock fans should own this cd.

I am about to buy this CD, but first i must say this-
THESE GUYS ROCK, They have a great mix of Metal/Rap/Hard Rock as a band total. I dont like rap, or Screamin' bloody murder kind of music so much, but the way they entwine it into their music just works! The album before this (Fireproof) was more rap than rock. If you are interested in "Pillar" albums, this is probabaly their best-( unless they ,make better ones in the future) For you metal/rappers out there- get "Fireproof" Daniel E (age 15)

Straight-Ahead Hard Rock.......2007-03-25

This is the first Pillar album that I've ever purchased. In fact, whenever I bought it, I had never even heard of them or any of their songs. I just happened to be in a Christian bookstore buying an old Petra album and decided that I'd "modernize" my Christian rock catalogue. "Where Do We Go From Here" turned out to be a perfect choice. I was very surprised at the musicianship of this band. I was also surprised at how heavy they actually are. There music is somewhere along the lines of groups like Saliva, Disturbed, or even P.O.D. (although there isn't quite as much rap on this album). Although sticklers of the "Jesus Quota" will not like what they hear on this album, Pillar's music is nonetheless uplifting and, more importantly for a father of a five-year-old, clean. Even though I'm a Christian (Catholic if you want to get technical), I enjoy my rock music. The only problem is that bands like Velvet Revolver can't be and shouldn't be played around youngsters. Pillar gives me my rock outlet without having to cover my daughter's ears all of the time.

The best song on this album in my opinion is "Frontline." It has an anthemic, shake-your-fist attitude to it. Other standouts include "Hypnotized," "Aftershock," and "Bring Me Down." The entire album rocks very hard excepting "Rewind," which slows thing down a bit. Still, this is a wonderful album to have in your collection whether or not you're a Christian. I love my old Petra, Whiteheart, and PFR albums, but Pillar has secured their own spot in my Christian music rotation with "Where Do We Go From Here."

Highly recommended.

Big for folks doing the Musical.......2006-03-20

If you're getting this CD to help prepare for your school or community group doing the musical, there are a lot of changes from the CD to the book. Aside from finding the book in a new key and some chunks added/deleted, Here We Go Again and When You're Big aren't included anymore.

Overall, the music's a little trite, but there are some nice moments -- mostly the stuff sung by the female leads.

It's Awesome, It's Amazing, It's BIG!!!!.......2006-01-22

My high school did "Big" my sophomore year, and oh my god, it was such a fun musical to do. I kind of forgot about it until my senior year, when I suddenly craved some of that music again. So I purchased this CD and I've been loving it since. They got rid of a couple of the songs and replaced them with others as the show progressed on Broadway, so I was suprised to hear new material (to me anyways), and for the most part, I actually enjoyed these original songs over their replacements that my production contained. This cast is phenomenal and the guy who plays Josh Baskin sounds so much like Tom Hanks at points, its crazy. It's a simple, yet a bit fantastic musical about growing up, and it's funny and romantic, and a lot of fun. I love all the songs, and it's a shame it didn't do too well on B-way. At least this recording will keep the music alive.

"This Isn't Me" is one of my favorite tracks, as it's a lot of fun and has a great beat, but suprisingly it was replaced with "Good Morning to Mom", which was only so-so. "I Want To Go Home" is a great ballad that Josh sings, and its simple, a bit funny, and the ending is the best, as its cute and sad. Another song they got rid of, "Here We Go Again", is a song Susan sings, and again, I like it alot. It has a quirky melody that I like. "Stars, Stars, Stars" is another great song, and is quite cute. One of the more popular songs. "Cross The Line" is the finale to Act I and is also very excellent and up beat, and makes you want to dance. "Stop, Time" is my favorite song on the album by far. Sung by Josh's mom, it is one of the more poignant moments of the show. Heartfelt, sad, and truly beautiful, it defiantely makes you appreciate your mom. Barbara Walsh sounds superb on this: she has a great voice. I love this one. "Dancing all the Time" is another good Susan song, and it leads into "I Want To Know" by Young Josh, which is another good ballad. "Coffee, Black" is another showstopper, fun ensemble song, and again, very comedic. "One Special Man" is Susan's ballad to Josh, and it is very beatiful. My only regret is that its only 2:21 so its a short one, and I just want her to start belting at the end, but no, its a quiet ending. Still, I love this one too. The finale is great too, and features an amazing duet between Josh and Susan. I love the harmonies they do.

All in all, this is a great album. Sample the songs and give it a try. This is a must have!!

i saw this musical at the local high school in 2001 and was plesently suprised i of course saw the movie and the only thing i knew about this musical was it didnt stay long on broadway, so when i saw it was i shocked this is a delight cross the line still resenates in my head 5 years later.

BEWARE. This musical is perhaps one of the five worst pieces of music I have ever experienced. I began to wonder if the composer was attempting to make the world's worst musical. Listen for yourself and enjoy the disjunct vocal lines, the desperate attempt at "fun music", and - worst of all - how the highlight of the entire show both dramatically and musically is the insipidly awful "Heart and Soul". Stick to the movie because this baby is horrendous.

***Hello, I would like to start by saying I have never watched "The Young And The Restless" or any other movie or show this person has been in, and am reviewing as a music fan only! Ok, that being said, below is my review of "Where We Go From Here" by Michael Damian.***

This soap star seems to have a decent amount of vocal talent and is more proficient of a vocalist than many I see today*cough*anyrapperwhoeverlivedprettymuch*cough* and has a likability in his voice in songs, such as his 1988 hit cover of David Essex's classic "Rock On", and is exuberant on his other (albeit minor)hit, "Cover of Love".

True, this album has flaws, which in my opinion is the misery-inducing and depressing "A Touch Of Grey" which I just skip over when I listen to this CD anyway (which is a great workout album otherwise, by the way), which is so awful for me personally that I deducted two stars for it alone, but I'm sure there are people who enjoyed it, so to to each their own.

As this album is from 1989, it IS a bit dated and sounds like what it is: an 80's pop album, so be warned that if you do not like summery, danceable pop songs and artists like Rick Astley and Paul Young in the 1980's, you will not enjoy this, this was not made for you anyway.

Well, this has been my quickie review of why I enjoyed this CD and it hope it has been helpful to you, and as always this is my opinion and I'm sticking to it!

Way overrated by the folks here so far, but it's better than I would have thought.......2006-03-22

It's not a new phenomenon. Ever since Ricky Nelson, guys (and gals) of the silver screen and TV fame with a good smile and the right haircut parlayed it into an entre to the world of music. Sometimes this has revealed itself to be mere vanity (as anyone who's ever had the misfortune of hearing Don Johnson, Burt Reynolds, Bruce Willis, or Donnie "Ralph Malph" Most's albums can attest), in others truly great pop emerged (the Monkees and Ricky Nelson are the ones that spring to mind here).

So it was with expectation of sniggering and relish at the thought of sharpening my reviewing claws that I came to this album of my wife's by Young and the Restless soap opera star Michael Damian. Imagine my surprise when it wasn't the complete festering pile of excrement I expected.

Don't get me wrong: I am NOT going to give this a solid recommendation. There's way too much here that's rote, cliched, and derivative for it to be worthy of serious attention by discerning musical listeners. However, it does stand alongside much of 80s pop music fairly well and that's a pretty good accomplishment for someone who was doing it as a "2nd gig". That he managed to get a hit with a self-penned tune ("Was it Nothing at All?" also won a BMI Songwriting Award.) was nothing short of a miracle.

HIGHLIGHTS:
The update of 70s hit "Rock On" blows the Essex original out of the water, if only for the reason that it leaves off the strings. It remains a trashy guilty pleasure everytime it comes on the "80s,90s,Now" station. "Heartbreak Monday" is the shoulda been hit with a pretty catchy hook if not a great lyric. ("A heartbreak on Monday, you cried away all Sunday/And I don't want to see you hurt anymore") Damian's chasing the girl who always likes the "bad boy" there.

LOWS:
"Turn from my Love" has it all: wretched tin can digi-drum, painful "ooh ooh" wailing from Damian on the intro, Casio special shrill keyboard, and lyrical gems like "Oh, if you love someone/you will know the feelings/I have for you". Remember that song Donnie Wahlberg's character sings in the movie BOOGIE NIGHTS? Yeah, it's THAT bad. "Was it Nothing at All?" isn't any worse than many other syrupy, melodramatic pop ballads in the 80s (The Jets "You Got it All" anyone?) but it sure ain't songwriting award material.

BOTTOM LINE:
Only the unrepentently nostalgic will have to own it, but I must admit it wasn't the absolute trainwreck I feared it would be.

Fantastic CD!.......2005-10-06

In my opinion, this is the best album that Michael Damian ever recorded in his career. "Rock On" was the #1 single on the Billboard charts in June 1989. Michael also released the follow-up single, "Was It Nothing At All" which won a BMI songwriting award. This album is rare and out-of-print, but definitely worth getting.

By turns bold, sentimental, and decidedly loopy, director Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love has perceptively been described as a classic MGM musical without the songs. Which isn't to say it lacks for music; Jon Brion's glorious, stylistically baroque score matches Anderson's cinematic verve at every turn. Brion variously revives vintage Hawaiian pop-kitsch and Conway Twitty at his early Elvis-clone angstiest, and perfectly recasts Shelly Duvall's determined/desperate reading of "He Really Needs Me" from Harry Nilsson's underappreciated Popeye score as one of his major romantic themes; codependents need love, too. But the major touchstone for Brion's instrumental underscore is the elusive Reprise Records sound of the late '60s/early '70s, with arrangements that seem lingering homages to Brian Wilson's Smile, Van Dyke Parks's Song Cycle, and Randy Newman's Sail Away. The composer's own self-performed pop-waltz of a melancholy love song, "Here We Go," echoes nothing less than the Beatles in their Rubber Soul/Revolver prime; it was even recorded in their old Abbey Road studio and seems to coax musical ghosts from the very walls. It's no mean feat to be both smart and sentimental, but Brion's pulled it off handsomely here on this, the best soundtrack these ears savored in 2002. --Jerry McCulley

Punch Drunk Pepperland.......2005-12-01

Jon Brion is an excellent arranger, who has produced albums with Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, the Eels and Rufus Wainright (among others). For the soundtrack to PUNCH DRUNK LOVE, Brion plunges into Davy Jones' Locker for an orchestral rediscovery of the Beatles' YELLOW SUBMARINE soundtrack album, side-two (composed and arranged by George Martin). The overture to Brion's PUNCH DRUNK LOVE soundtrack, in its waltz time, feels like it was plucked right from the brilliant second half of Martin's "Sea of Time." This soundtrack shifts back and forth between delectible orchestral pop, experimental instrumentals, incongruous vocal tracks and sweeping soundtrack melodies. These days, fans of George Martin's side of the YELLOW SUBMARINE album are few and far between. But for those of us out there, consider this a follow-up... cut from the same cloth... and not one to miss. File Under -- Pop Psychedelia.

...So Here We Go.......2003-07-03

Strange... Cartoon-sounding... Eerie... Beautiful...

Those are the words that come to mind when I listen to the score to one of my new favorite films, "Punch-Drunk Love." Composed by Jon Brion, this beautifully haunting score gets in your head and stays there (just like the movie). You pretty much feel a party of emotions when you pop this baby in.

While it can be very melodic and soothing at times, it can also get tense and rapid. A lot of the tunes on the score appear to be influenced by the song "he needs me," which was originally from the "Popeye" movie and was performed by Shelly Duvall. (The original song appears on the soundtrack as well). And you really get the feeling that you're watching some sort of cartoon when you play the CD. How strange I'd like something like this, but that's thanks to loving the movie so much.

My favorite tracks are "overture," "tabla," "punch-drunk melody," "he needs me," "hands & feet," "blossoms & blood," "here we go," "le petit chateau," hospital," and "third floor hallway." That's the majority of the album, but those are the songs I listen to the most. I really love Jon Brion's "here we go;" the lyrics really seem to hit home with me. All 17 tracks are a complete joy to listen to.

If you're a big fan of the film and you love a good film score, put "Punch-Drunk Love" on your list. This is a score that I can never get tired of. I'm glad that I have it in my CD collection and it is a frequent visitor in my stereo, I must admit.

Another Great PT Anderson/Jon Brion Collaboration.......2003-05-15

This is another great collaboration between director Paul Thomas Anderson and musician Jon Brion. First, this is a great movie, and then an equally great soundtrack/score by Jon Brion, with the film and soundtrack working perfectly together. The disc is mostly instrumental songs, but also includes the songs "He Needs Me" "Waikiki" & "Danny (Lonely Boy Blue)" which are prominent in the film. This score is great on its own, which makes me recommend it more than the "Magnolia" score (again by the PT/Brion duo). These two are really able to team up and make the music perfectly complement the film.
Also, if you like this soundtrack, especially "Here We Go", go find Jon Brion's album "meaningless"

NOT AS STRONG AS I EXPECTED.......2003-05-01

I was a huge fan of the movie, and particularly the music in it. The problem with this disc is that they break up the beautiful and unique score with less beautiful and less unique songs. Look at the track listing and you'll see several examples, including Hawaiian music, a rock song, and a vocal by Jon Brion, who's better served by pure instrumentation.

Rather than getting the soundtrack, I would recommend getting the movie and enjoying the score in its true context.

With this disc, Chanticleer, the internationally renowned, all-male 12-voice chamber choir, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Presenting songs from earlier albums plus one not previously recorded, the selection displays the group's remarkable stylistic and linguistic versatility, as well as all the qualities that have made it famous: the impeccable precision and intonation; the pristine tonal purity; the deep, inner expressiveness; the infinitely variable range of colors, textures, dynamics and moods; and the incredible vocal control that allows voices to stand out as well as to blend into a seamless, sonorous whole. Not for nothing has the group been called "an orchestra of voices" with its ability to sound like a big band in chordal passages and to imitate bass pizzicati as well as patter-songs and gospel shouts. The sopranos take off into stratospheric heights with florid coloratura; it is hard to believe that these are male voices. The program ranges from Gregorian chant and liturgical music of the 16th and 17th century, through traditional and jazz-influenced folk songs and spirituals (some in deplorably bad arrangements), to works by contemporary composers. Chanticleer's mostly vibrato-less vocal style still reflects its roots in its original Renaissance repertoire, but the way the singers use their voices in the popular, jazzy songs makes one aware of the evolving kinship between the two traditions. Though primarily an a capella ensemble, Chanticleer is occasionally joined by various instrumental groups, from period instrument orchestras to a jazz trio, and Dawn Upshaw adds her radiant, smiling, unmistakably "real" soprano to a delightful, high-spirited performance of a Spanish Carol. My idea of heaven.......2007-02-17

If you liked Norman Luboff's Song's of the Sea's "Shenandoah", the price of this CD is worth it alone. That's why I ordered the CD. I heard Chanticleer's version and immediately ordered it. The rest is just the icing on the cake.

Then there is the one Kiri Tekanawa (sp?) offering, which is the only female voice on the recording.

Wonderful, but not quite the best of I had hoped.......2006-07-18

Some great material truly shines on this album, but I wsih that the group had been a little less populist in their choice of repertoire. There is a little too many arrangements and folk-like material, with the exception of the wonderful "Dulaman", and I would like to have heard some more varied repertoire. That said this is an excellent starting point for this amazing group.

A treasury.......2005-11-06

As you can tell from the samples, the music here is amazing and covers a wide territory. It is less obvious that much of this is available on other CDs. I am confident, for example, that "We Shall Walk Through the Valley In Peace" is the same track that you will find on their phenomenal and highly recommended gospel collection, _Where the Sun Shall Never Go Down_, and I see a number of familiar-looking titles from other CDs. My advice is: if you're looking for a broad sample of the group's repertoire, then you can't go wrong here -- but if you've already got several Chanticleer albums, then you'll want to check your existing collection for potential duplications before buying this 'treasury.'

Chanticleer: A Portrait.......2005-10-26

This is a marvelous singing group of all males with a little addition of Dawn Upshaw on a couple of pieces. They are thourally amazing at what they can sing with Male Voices usually unaccompanied. Obviously they have good strong Contra-Tenors that can manage the high notes without any problems. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys vocal music, unaccompanied and like Male Voices
