About the Artist
Kirk Dubb "No Hope...Just Booze & Madness..."

What do you say about an artist like Kirk Dubb? He has the heart of a poet, the mind of a derelict, and he has just unleashed a debut CD that should impact hip-hop with all the sobriety and subtlety of a detox ward.

Booze and Madness proudly displays the drunken dexterity of Kirk Dubb, whose uniquely fermented spin on the rap game is a frothy brew consisting of equal parts Iceberg Slim, King Ad Rock, and Foster Brooks. Make no mistake. The science is as sloshed as it is sociopathic. It is also unapologetic, and undeniably REAL.

Kirk Dubb (a.k.a. Kirk Warner) came up on old school rap legends like Kool G Rap and Digital Underground. But his flow comes as much from Bukowski as it does the Beasties. Sample lyrics: “I’d rather throw up than grow up”; “Pass me another and another like I’m Charles Bukowski’s brother”. When Kirk Dubb found his hip-hop religion, he found it floating in the bottom of a pint of Guinness. And he hasn’t strayed far since…

“I come from a proud lineage of drunkards and gamblers,” Kirk humbly explains.

When no less than Kid Rock heard one early Kirk Dubb track, “This Is It”, he offered to remix it on the spot, saying he would make the inebriated emcee an “underground icon.” Unfortunately for Kirk Dubb, the Kid also signed with Atlantic the same week, putting what was sure to be an intoxicating collaboration (and a record breaking bar tab) on permanent hold.

Enter legendary Northwest mixmaster Dynomite D (Dylan J. Frombach), whose turntable pyrotechnics have ignited tracks for the Beastie Boys, Money Mark, and Kid Koala. Dynomite’s wicked beats on tracks like “Party Time”, “Seldom Seen, Seldom Sober” and “In the Pocket” (where Dynomite makes the logical musical connection between Bill Cosby’s Fat Albert and the Fat Boys), proved the perfect antidote to the hangover of an M.I.A. Kid Rock. Dynomite D’s explosive tracks provide the proverbial missing olive to the shaken and stirred wordplay of Booze and Madness .

“This is hip hop music for the Everyman. The drunks and the degenerates. The Barstool B-Boys and all the Blue and White Collar Boozers and Boozettes. Dubb’s got the party market cornered,” as the man himself puts it. With Booze and Madness, Kirk Dubb can make a legitimate claim as hip-hop’s premier Wordsmith to the Wasted. “more hits than Timothy Leary.” Kirk Dubb’s got your next round when you do.

4 out of 5 stars Mod rock at it's best.......2006-10-31

It might be pre-punk, but it's fast, it's crude, and it's enormously catchy rock & roll. It's angsty in the best way, that is, the words ring true but they come off with a sense of rebellious fun. If you like British Invasion bands and appreciated the punk movement, or if you liked the Pogues as well as more traditionally-styled rock, you'll really enjoy this.

4 out of 5 stars What a change!.......2005-08-10

I just picked up this record, the only Nips music available to the general public, and I thought maybe the case was wrong and that someone slipped some early Clash into this sleeve. The spitfire delivery of Joe Strummer or Johnny Rotten leaps out over three chords and a bassline straight from the Ramones first record. Shane MacGowan barely sounds like the Shane we would all come to love as the frontman of the Pogues and yet this record is undeniably pure Shane. If you want the Irish stuff, don't look here. If you wanna throw your fist in the air and pogo like it's 1977, spend the ten bucks.

5 out of 5 stars awesome CD.......2004-02-03

this is an awesome CD. very old 70's punk sounding. if you like bands like the clash and the ramones, you'll love this CD.

4 out of 5 stars worth your money.......2003-12-09

I highly suggest this album as a fascinating insight into the musical development of Shane MacGowan. Great music? Not really, but it is pretty good, with a few of the tracks being extremely good-- All The Time and Gabrielle especially. There is definitely a Kinks-vibe to the Nips' sound, and it's not anywhere near pure "punk" as I expected. But, as always, anything featuring Shane is worth your time and money.

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. Fittingly, this two-CD set includes "I'm Still Here," which may well be Stritch's motto. If you're looking for a concise yet bewitching history of the musical, this is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars A National Treasure.......2007-07-05

This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.

Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.

If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Stritch is superb.......2007-06-27

The only disappointment is that I missed the show live. This is a terrific honest performance by an actor who has a deep well of experience from which to draw. From her early childhood memories, through acting school, her loves, her struggles and more, Ms Stritch weaves a fascinating and completely enthralling story. Ultimately, she lives the songs, rather than just performs and this is what really marks her out.
I am so glad, she's still here!

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining but grating on the ears.......2007-05-11

I've never been able to understand what is so great about Elaine Stritch's singing. It's simple: she can't sing. I've tried and tried to like her, and I do, as an actress, but NOT as a singer. Listening to these CDs, all I hear is a grouchy old lady voice with no vibrato, no range, and no ability to hold notes. If she were to try out for American Idol she would get cringes! I love her humor and honesty, and that's why I bought this, but the voice...ugh.

5 out of 5 stars Great Broadway Review.......2007-04-11

I thoroughly enjoy this collection of stories from her experiences from a teenage girl in Michigan through her career, very funny, some sad and great entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Elaine Stritch at Liberty.......2007-01-19

Completely entertaining---a bit maudilin in places, but a must have for any Elaine Stritch fan.

Certainly worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Vandals- Gods of punk.......2007-01-19

This LP is exactly what you think The Vandals should be. This is one of their best albums to date as far as I'm concerned. If you have any inclination to listen to punk music make this cd your first buy. This band is an all-star cast including drummer Josh Freise, who has many accalodes including "drummer of the year".

5 out of 5 stars Holy Vandals Batman!!!.......2005-07-14

Ya gotta love the Vandals. They just have such enthusiasm for the genre. They love to play and to rock. If you wear a t-shirt you should own this album. If you ride a skateboard, surfboard or snowboard... buy this album.

Hell, if you don't believe me download a few songs and sample their style. AND THEN buy their album so they get a few bucks for their efforts.

That's right. You like their music and but their album. They can afford another beer. So do it. Do it now.

I just wish they were coming to Australia soon.

4 out of 5 stars A great change........2005-04-08

This album really suprised me when I bought it and heard the first song. I was sort of worried when I bought it because I thought it could be very poppy like there previous two albums. Well when I heard the first few songs I was shocked, and very happy.

This album is quick, fast, funny, and energetic unlike IDSS. There are really good pump up tracks like "How They Getcha", "My Neck And My Back", and "Be A Good Robot." There are also some mellower songs that are also great like "I Am Crushed", and "My Special Moment."

I think this album was awesome. Although it's a four star album because of length, and it isn't as good as Fear Of A Punk Planet, or Peace Thru Vandalism. Overall I recommend this to any fans of punk, and a must have for a Vandals fan.

2 out of 5 stars Not what i expected........2004-11-13

This cd has got some good songs on it and some really bad ones. The good ones like "how they getcha" and "dig a hole" (best song on the cd) Their are about 5 good songs on the cd out of 12. If you like a mellowed out Vandals then you will like this, if you like the more punk vandals, then check out their Live Fast Diahrea cd or When in Rome do as the Vandals.

5 out of 5 stars vandals best since "live fast..".......2004-11-09

FINALLY!!!!!!!! finally, an album to make the vandals hardcore fans happy! this is what we've been waiting for! this is for the people (like me) who know exactally what the vandals are like live and wish they'd do an album that represents how fast and powerful the band really is! I really think that the vandals had fallen asleep with their previous effort "internet dating..." although funny at times, the album was definitely lacking in the kick-ass department. 'Hollywood Potato..." has it all- fast punk/hardcore tracks, laugh-out-loud funny tracks, Dave Quackinbush's BEST vocals EVER! - just a really great, relentless, PUNK ROCK album!!!!
definitely don't pass this one up!

5 out of 5 stars La Melle Prince, the Songwritre..........2006-02-18

Not only was the late La Melle Prince (Decca Recording Artist 1969) a songstress and an international performer, she was also a songwritre as well, of which, her writing skills are portrayed here on (track #7) "Get High." Overall, this CD compilation is a jewel to have in your collection, especially if you love 1940's style jump blues music; as well as, big band jazz & blues and country music too...

Prince would always say, that her lucky number was always #7 and yet we see another unusual example of this...I guess 'on the record' she was right, once more... (La Melle Prince, born January 7, 1927 Kennett, Missouri - presumed death 1991 Los Angeles, California).

*In retrospect, you can also find one of Prince's rare and most noteworthy stand out song performance's heard on the historical 3 CD (Box Set) 'From Where I Stand: The Black Experience In Country Music.' The song entitled "The Man That Made A Woman Out Of Me" is referenced on Disc #3 ('Forward With Pride') track #7; and was produced in 1969 by the late Country Music Famed Record Producer Owen William Bradley and recorded at his historical recording studio "Bradley's Barn" in Nashville, TN. Also, with the legendary world-renowned male quartet singing backing vocals, The Jordanaires. Prince, is and 'was' considered one of the most intriguing, distinct and unknown artist on this CD album collection (Nominated for a ?1998 Grammy (Album Package and Notes) produced by the Country Music Foundation and Warner Bros. Records, Inc. (Feb. 1998)).

*Note, forthcoming... in (2006-) her nephew A. David Burleigh, is currently working on the memoirs and a pending screenplay of her life; thus, highlighting one of her key songs "The Man That Made A Woman Out Of Me").

Whatever you want to call, it is an amazing collection of great songs performed by great but mostly (sadly) forgotten artists. You can hear the whole history of rock 'n roll built upon these tracks - they range from classic blues to rock 'n roll blues to early r&b to jazz to dance R&B. There are no fillers on this collection - it's all great and you wonder how you anyone managed to miss these tracks ... EVERY fan of r&b, rock 'n roll, and blues should have this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Good performances but an unnecessary musical.......2004-04-26

Winner of the 1974 Tony Award for Best Musical (an admittedly slow season for new musicals) this show is fine example of the trend of taking successful plays and turning them into musicals. The result in this case is acceptable but nothing special has been added by musicalizing the play. That said, at least this show doesn't cheapen the source material. The performances are all fine especially Virginia Capers as Mama and Joe Morton as Walter Lee. As always, Sony has done a splendid remastering job, restoring a song that had been left off the original Lp due to timing restraints ("Booze"... although the synopsis, reprinted from the LP jacket, makes no mention of the tune.) The booklet has some interesting notes about the creation of the show. It also reprints the show's logo which makes it look like one of those inane 1960s musical comedies instead of a serious musical play. I prefer the original play (and the movie) which remain powerful enough wthout songs.

4 out of 5 stars Raisin is almost operatic.......2003-05-24

Listening to this CD we once again get to know Lorraine Hansberry... but from a different perspective. To render "Raisin in the Sun" to a musical play did her justice. This recording is superb. The liner notes do not help understand the musical plotting and I wish they did.

4 out of 5 stars Underrated throbbing score!.......2000-11-21

I own the original LP of this show and played it until it is now close to wearing out. An absolutely incredible cast brings the Raisin in the Sun story to vivid musical life. Harold Wheeler did the orchestrations and the score moves and pulses with feeling and life.

5 out of 5 stars All that is good about Rockabilly.......2003-10-28

If you love rockabilly you need this CD. If you don't love rockabilly listen to this CD and you will. Rockabilly represents all that is great in music, form great musicians to stripped down lyrics that make you tap your feet and sing along. Frantic Flattops have remained true to the genre, yet bring a new enough sound to not make you think, "oh I've heard this before". A important CD for anyone who loves rockabilly.

5 out of 5 stars Flattops rock Rochester.......2000-01-04

My friend & I see the Flattops every time they're in Rochester year after year. This CD is the next best thing to hearing the songs live with their thumping bass and swingy beats. Absolutely love "Wake up, get up, get out".

5 out of 5 stars Real Rockin' Rockabilly with a darker edge.......1999-08-31

The boys from Rochester NY have done it again. This album has it all: swinging melodies, thumping bass, woe-is-me lyrics, and lots of ink!!! Every song on here rocks, especially "Sweeter Seventeen", "Witch Doctor" and "Black Eye Blues". They tour a whole lot, so if you get a chance to see them- GO!!

5 out of 5 stars Hard Hitting Sweaty Rockabilly.......1999-08-01

These boys cut through the waves of mediocre and formulated rockabilly by simply doing what they do best: Rocking like Hell. My only complaint is that I didn't run into this band earlier.

        Album Details

The Pleasures of Drinking have Been Celebrated in Music Throughout History, and on 'rhythm and Booze' We've Gathered Together a Selection of Tracks Written Specifically on the Subject of Alcohol, with the Occasional Reference to the Female of the Species. The Tracks Are all from the Height of the R&B Era (The 1940's-1950's), Pre-rock 'n' Roll. Heavy Drinking Has Always Been Over-glamorized and Certainly after World War Ii Excessive Behaviour was Tolerated and Accepted, Rather Than Frowned Upon. For the First Time Many People Had a Disposable Income; Money in their Pocket to Spend as They Wished. Lounges and Late-night Clubs Sprung Up all Over the Place, Either featuring Live Acts Or Housing a Jukebox. Big Swing Bands were Replaced with Smaller Ensembles, with a Tinkling Piano Or Honking Sax as the Main Focus of the Group. A Style Called 'jump Blues' Became Popular - an Energetic and Often Humorous Form of R&b.
