Album Description

Lumiere is the culmination of guitar virtuoso Bob Brozman's musical memories formed over a lifetime of travelling and playing music with others. His years of absorbing influences from cultures worldwide is expressed through the establishment of the Bob Brozman Orchestra - a unique concept where Bob intricately plays each instrumental part, building layer upon layer to formulate the tremendous sound of an extensive orchestra. He revisits the influences drawn from previous collaborations with artists such as Debashish Bhattacharya, Rene Lacaille, Djeli Moussa Diawara and Takashi Hirayasu to reflect on the profound imprint travel has had on his life.

4 out of 5 stars Trust in Bob.......2007-07-19

Like Bob Brozman? Want to hear alot of him without knowing it? Lumiere is your album. I wasn't sure what I thought of the concept of this album when I first saw it. Would it be Blues Reflex (a great album) on steroids? I had a spot of great luck and was able to get this album the day of release rather than having to wait for a copy to be shipped the day of release.

If you didn't think Bob was more than just a guitarist before this, you should afterwards. An album made up largely of guitars, all manner and size of other plucked instruments (along with some bass played by a friend, and percussion by Bob and longtime friend/producer, Daniel Thomas) and overdubs could have been a disaster in the hands of most guitarists but this comes together beautifully and naturally. This isn't a bunch of dueling guitar solos coming out of every speaker in the room.

Playing with people like Rene Lacaille, Debashish Bhattacharya, Djeli Moussa Diawara, etc... and first and foremost wanting to serve the music has, I think, caused Bob to find meaningful expression where lesser musicians would just chunka-chunka strum until it's their turn to be in the spotlight. Bob can be the painting, but he can also be the frame, or the mat, or a beveled edge, or the way the different colors of the mat, frame, and picture work together for the greater good of the piece.

That's what this album is about. This isn't thin, linear music. It's open and spacious, with feelings of movement working both side to side and top to bottom. The "band" is called an "orchestra" but he isn't playing all the cover-photo instruments all the time, or on every track (and no sax at all). Lumiere has the feeling of a really happening small group that may be from some sort of primal, tropical, hot-swinging little Italian villa in northern India where the locals fancy Iranians playing Greek ukeleles. Or something like that. It all flows together beautifully, though each tune has its own distinct personality, like sonic photographs from 1 issue of National Geographic.

How I'll grow to rate this in comparison to other Brozman albums over time, I cannot yet say. I've heard it 10 times so far and loved it. It shouldn't be overlooked. He doesn't play a National the way he plays a Weissenborn or a uke the way he plays a charango. You'll hear him explore things in ways you've not heard him play before, as well as hear him enter into familiar strains from previous albums, but presented here in new and unfamiliar ways.

You really do get something special when all these instruments come together in his hands within this context. I don't think he could have made this album with other people. It's also totally unlike a true solo Brozman performance of Live in Germany [Region 2].

5 out of 5 stars Vibrant Vocals and Versatile Vibes from Vietnam.......2007-07-15

On the Rough Guide musical tour of the world, next stop is Vietnam! And as usual they've excelled in offering a CD full of great music that's evocatively representative, widely ranging, and eminently listenable. From contemporary pop songs to time-honored folk lyrics, from popularly traditional melodies to globally-influenced innovations, this CD will take you on a crash tour of one of the most exciting musical landscapes on the planet (and the stuff people in Vietnam are really listening to). If you've never heard Vietnamese music before, you can't find a better intro than this album. On the other hand, if you've been a big fan of Vietnam's incredible music for years, you'll appreciate this fine selection and find a few surprises--Vietnamese Blues? "Rider in the Sky" on the dan bao recorded poolside in Saigon? You'll only hear it here! But every track is golden in its own way, lovingly handpicked by the compiler as is standard practice with Rough Guide CDs.

Speaking of the compiler, Paul Fisher's liner notes are well-written and do the job nicely of introducing each performer and singer while contextualizing and placing the music within the overall musical culture of Vietnam--no stuffy musicological details, just the right amount of background so that the listener can pretty much know and appreciate what's playing. And the tracks are introduced in the order that they appear on the CD (a common sense arrangement that some Rough Guide CDs have gotten a bit too fancily experimental with), so it's easy to follow along with the music--at least the first time, and with this music, it'll be the first time of many!

In doing industry-wide training, mentoring and systems development for network marketing, working with the best of the best... I still consider this the most impactful audio CD ever done! Jim Rohn is the master at taking proven concepts and philosophies and so eloquently weaving them in to practical applications in a way that you don't know where the time went when you get to the end. This CD is a must for anyone, at any level, in the industry or considering networking. You will be inspired while getting a clearer vision of the beauty and power of network marketing, done right. I give a copy to everyone we mentor and they all love and are empowered by Jim Rohn's masterful job.

The master orator, the master inspirational speaker, the master teacher, Jim Rohn captivates his audience in order to deliver sound advice to those who would like to understand network marketing. Using stories, quotes, and his own experience in the realm of network marketing, he delivers a raft of useful information, and the inspiration to make it all work. I have listened to this CD about 30 times, and I'm still gleaning new knowledge with every playing. I recommend this CD to anyone who is considering network marketing.

The follow up to 1999's Rough Guide To Bhangra, Rough Guide To Bhangra Dance focuses on recent mutations of this flexible music genre also known as "desi beats." Originally brought to England by North Indian Punjabi immigrants and their children, bhangra mutated in cities like London and Birmingham in the 80s to reflect the new surroundings of the artists and audience. The barrel-shaped dhol drum is still at the center of the clattering bhangra sound, but the 15 tracks here range from Four Of A Kind's boy-band leanings to Veronica's modern R&B-ish grooves to the traditional-minded Daljit Mattu & Ravi Bal. The music's party vibe works surprisingly well in conjunction with the strict aesthetics of hip-hop, dancehall and dance music, and has actually been incorporated by artists in those genres (Missy Elliott being a notable example). Nonetheless, this is an excellent line-up of artists coming out of the Indian tradition looking to Western forms in search of new fusions. --Tad Hendrickson

      Album Description

From its humble beginnings as a folk dance in northwest India, the British-Asian phenomenon of bhangra has incorporated Western instruments, such as the electric guitar, bass and keyboards, and evolved into the energetic and highly popular club and dance music it is today. This album features some of the hottest bhangra beats and the funkiest names on the British-Asian scene.

5 out of 5 stars Hi! Hi! HI!.......2006-10-03

this is the music to accompany a dance craze that is going to the big urban centers in the USA right now after having been a euro- phenom. I first heard about it when I was doing a websearch on music of India, then ordered the CD. My daughter hwo lives in DC was surprised to hear that I had gotten this, and she had just been to a Bhangra event at a a club there. The tracks are danceable and really really fun. some of it has a hip hop beat but the harmonies and melodies are so wonderfully fresh that you will find yourself humming along after on ly a listen or two....

5 out of 5 stars great intro to bhangra .......2006-06-14

being born in the states to bengali parents, there isnt as much popular music thats influenced by indian culture (bad rap looping aside). mostly, we (as in first generation americans) usually have to turn to british stuff for that crossover. bhangra is, for us, what rock en español or reggetón is for latinos.... its dancable and familiar. this cd, i think, has some awesome tracks on it... there is a whole spectrum of bhangra types- from the reggae-inspired to the more 'hip-hop' flavored stuff to the calm, religious 'akheer' (which is totally my favorite). you dont have to understand punjabi to enjoy it (i mean, i dont and nor do most of my indian friends... but we connect with it even though bhangra is a regional punjabi phenomenon... then again, reggetón is supposedly a puerto rican/caribeño thing and even argentinians and spaniards can dig it). anyway, the point is this cd has a good collection of songs that is very cool regardless of your background. neat songs, a lot of indian backgrounds (with traditional instruments like the veena and harmonuim) and pulsing dhol/syth rhythms. it makes you want to get up and dance, which is exactly what bhangra is for!

5 out of 5 stars Complex, lively music for listening or dancing.......2006-05-22

I stumbled across this CD on a display rack at Borders and listened to a few minutes and then bought it. I fell in love with the complexity and liveliness of the music. Most of the tracks have complex percussion of standard 4/4 count dance music but with lots of other percussion rhythms thrown in with various instruments. I can't identify many of the instruments but I certainly enjoyed them. The singing was also excellent and sometimes quite intricate.

This music is good for driving or anytime when you want to get into a happy energetic mood. It's also great for organized dancing. Most of it will work with salsa, hustle, or west coast swing. The energy of the music encourages a lot of improvisation and messing around. It is nearly perfect dance club music.

This is fun, lively, interesting, and enjoyable music. I highly recommend it. It inspired me to rip it to mp3 at a much higher quality level than I usually do. Usual is variable @ 192 kbps. This one rated averaging @ 256.

4 out of 5 stars "I'm lit like a Branch Davidian, or what's left of the lithium in Cobain's Cranium".......2007-06-26

Eating's Not Cheating is easily Chris' most distinct and unique work. His other albums are known for tons of geeky pop culture references and funny skits to break up the songs. Eating's contains few of the former and none of the latter. Instead of songs about Star Wars and stuff like that, it focuses more on his thoughts about drugs and girls. It's easily the least nerdy thing he's done and from a standpoint of pure rap prowess, it's probably his best album. It's filled with great beats and very strong lyrics. Whether you actually like it the most depends on what exactly you like about him, just quality rap or that along with the dorkiness he's known for.

I got the reissue, which has three extra songs and two remixes. "MC Chris Owns" starts off strong with an awesome sound to it, and is followed by easily the silliest song on the album. "Illy Oi" is the first new track, and it's got a nice beat and fun chorus. "Tractorbeam" is probably my favorite, with great, very descriptive lyrics and a nice sound. The record continues along on with a good groove. The songs are maybe a bit more same-y than on his other works, but it's all consistently at least pretty good. "Care Bear" is a little different, with the only backing to Chris' rap being his own beatboxing. "Boys Don't Cry" is one of those sweeter songs he does sometimes, and I like it a lot, though I might like it more if the chorus didn't include the line "I'm jonesin' harder than Gollum." It would be fine elsewhere, but it doesn't really fit the mood. The album ends with "My Name Is", which is a prime example of Chris' penchant for telling us what his name is as often as it fits the song. One of his better lines from earlier is "My self-aggrandizing and deprecation keeps 'em guessing", and it's pretty true. MC has plenty of songs both praising his own prowess and others where he doesn't give himself a break. Whatever he really thinks, he's definitely good at making fun music.

4 out of 5 stars Not a perfect rap album, but's really enjoyable........2006-02-02

Okay, this is not meant to be an incredible, mind-blowing experience like the Marshall Mathers LP or the Wu-Tang Clan. Pick your favourite of the great rap artists. mc chris is not it. So why listen to this CD?

Because it's fun. There are few things more enjoyable than listening to rap with good rhymes, obscure phrases, and an incredible flow (yes, mc chris can do all of those with the best of them). If you don't believe me, Google him. Go to his website, and download his first album for free (that's what I did to get into him). His song off of that album "Fett's Vette" is among the wittiest and best rap songs I can think of.

mc chris is an independent rapper (not a rap artist, he's more of just a rapper). His rap style is rather like a faster version of the Licensed to Ill Beastie Boys - immature, infantile, and rather nerdy. Of course he's nerdy, he's part of the nerdcore rap movement. But he moves out of being a simple flash-in-the-pan nerd riding a movement. Especially in this album.

For being independent, this album is well produced. Rap music can take incredibly high production values sometimes. Instead, we have on this a lot of synthesizers, a lot of good beats, and a lot of work put into an album for probably a small fraction of the usual cost of a rap album. It is like 90% of the taste for 1% of the calories.

mc chris ignores the seriousness that rap artists have tried to establish. And it shows. This can easily hurt most artists, and damage the message that they try to give you. Fortunately, mc chris is not most artists, and he doesn't have a message.

4 out of 5 stars Not his best, but still better than the rest..........2005-09-07

You might know MC Chris (Chris Ward) better as MC Pee Pants, Sir Loin, or Little Brittle on [adult swim]'s Aqua Teen Hungerforce and Hesh on Sealab 2021. This album features 14 tracks (all music, no skits on this one) of white bread nerdy hip-hop. While that might not sound appealing to you're average hip-hop fan, for those of us who love hip-hop's infectious sound yet can't identify with the lyrics, this is the perfect solution. Especially if like me you're early years were spent sleeping on Lando Calrusian's face (empire bed sheets) while deciding what alignment your warrior should be (chaotic-nuetral). That's not to say traditional hip-hop fans won't find this album entertaining. This music crosses boundries.

The rhymes are old school and fit well with Chris' high pitched voice. He flows very well and the rhymes never sound forced. DJ John (John Fewell), the person responsible for the beats, does an excellent job at providing a background that's varied and well put together. Elements of drum and bass, break beat, and even punk (with the misfits bass line on Evergreen) find their way onto this album.

If you find yourself to be a fan then check out this album. It's extremely good. Also check local listings to catch the man on tour. Absolutely awesome shows. Only reason it's four stars instead of five is because I don't think this is his best album. Like the title says though, it's better than 99% of the stuff that's played on the radio nowadays. Pick it up.

            Album Description

Kenge Kenge symbolise all that is great about African traditional music; they are the guardians and masters of an ancient but living tradition. They breath new life into Kenya's Luo musical roots, continuing its evolution, from the hand-made instruments of the past, through the popular guitar-based benga, and now returning to both re-explore the acoustic origins of benga and embrace their Luo musical heritage.
