Despite the overwrought production and excessive use of trite catch phrases that typifies the output of today's corporate rap elite, Dark Man's innate raw power can't be masked. Had he fallen off, The Great Depression would be considered an amazing comeback, but since X's reputation is intact and it's hip-hop as a genre that's floundering, the album serves as an antidote to the flood of insipid hip-hop/R&B combinations and "Oochie Wally"-isms that clog the airwaves. Standout tracks include the riot-inducing "Who We Be" and the dead-on "Shorty Was Da Bomb." Even the lesser tunes are dope. On first listen, Depression's most accessible song, "We Right Here," comes off as mindless radio fodder, but its blunt chorus quickly grows on you. The album's centerpiece, "I Miss You," is a genuinely personal composition built around a universal theme. Here, DMX's lyrics and delivery invite the same favorable comparisons to Tupac Shakur that he received earlier in his career. --Rebecca Levine

4 out of 5 stars (Rating: 8 out of 10): DMX...Showed That He Has Some Strength Left Back In '01.......2006-09-13

2001 DMX has been deep in the rap game. His fourth album "The Great Depression" proves why he was revelent back in that time. When I heard "Who We Be", I had to snatch this one up in a heart beat. Along with "Who We Be", the other lead single was "We Right Here", which was pretty decent sounding to some people.

What would really get my attention throughout this album was the energetic the songs would sound. That shouldn't be a suprise because that's X speciality when rhyming. "Bloodline Anthem" was a one of those songs with an energetic sound to it. "When I'm Nothing" would be another as X rhymes over an old school R&B beat. I'm feeling the beat to the song "I'ma Bang", which is another dope song. There are a few soft sounding songs on here also. Two notable ones were the grandma dedication "I Miss You" and the song "You Could Be Blind".

There are a few bonus songs here that appear after "A Minute For Your Son". The first would be "Next Out The Kennel" featuring the new group Bloodline freestyling over old DMX songs while DJ Kay Slay hosts the song. The next song "Problem Child" would feature Drag-On and Mysonne, a decent sounding song to me. The last song "The Usual Suspects II" featuring Mic Gerinmo and Big Stan a dope song that I'm feelng real well.

Only few problems I have with the song is the song "Number 11" that really goes no where. Also a loaded number of bonus songs at the end of the CD should be placed throughout the CD would have been nice also. Other than that, great DMX album. I recommend this to people who are fans of DMX, as this proves one of his better albums.

I challenge anyone to put up any other Hip Hop legend's first four CDs next to DMX's and they will lose. The Great Depression was X's fourth classic CD proving that he's the best hip hop artist of all time and the true voice of the streets. His gritty message, slick revenge narratives, honest spirituality, unrelenting fascination with street ingenuity, all come out on the Great Depression. His piece about his grandmother was touching. Everyone knows that Who WE Be is the greatest Thug narrative ever written. DMX is the best Hip Hop artist of all time and I challenge anyone to show me four CDs that can compare to his first 4. This is not to say that I didn't like his 5th effort but he was a victim of his own success and so Grand Champion wasn't a classic like the first four so everyone was hating on him. But still it was tight. The Great Depression was his last classic CD. Grand Champ had a lot of anger and frustration but this time without the ingenuity and creativity you saw on the first 4.

4 out of 5 stars DMX - The Great Depression.......2006-04-20

This album is all about X going through the tough times in his life. The making of this album followed his grandmother's death amongst other problems he was facing. There are more slow songs than we are used to seeing from X, yet as always all of his emotions are shown in his songs with his voice. This is not some of X's best work, however it is still better than most other mc's have to offer.

5 out of 5 stars I was really skeptical........2006-06-03

When I first got this CD, I really hated it. I hated it a lot. After listening to the other CD's so many times, I felt let down. Blindside is always playing with their music, and creating something really new, but I wasn't expecting this.

But when I found myself humming these songs from time to time, I took the CD off the shelf and listened again. I was wrong. The CD is quite genious in it's own sense. Don't compare it to old Blindside, because you probably won't like it.

These tracks are extremely emotional and heartfelt. You can feel Christian's pain when he sings, more so than on the other CD's. Now I love this CD. I love Blindside in general. I can't wait to see what comes next.

"We're All Gonna Die" and "Yemkela" are my two absolute favorites on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars once it grows, it wont go away.......2006-04-29

I personally have been with Blindside since back with their self titled CD. I've loved their music every step on the way... I know alot of music, and try to spread the word to my friends and even random people sometimes, and Blindside was a hard one to get across to them. Because, if I were to play maybe, "Superman", then maybe "King of the Closet", and then perhaps "Painting" the listener would be like wtf? So of course, they have changed dramatically between albums, but none the less they still have the skill of making me hit the high's on the emotion scale at every which way you look at it!

This CD was one that i didn't really enjoy at first, but of course it was because i was hoping for something... different. But, knowing how Blindside is an ever changing face in music, i left the cd in my player for a week, that was just to try to get used to it, but when i finally decided I needed to take it out, I couldn't bring myself to! "Great Depression" may be a bit catchy at parts, but to me its a good catchy! Their guitar playing is alot different, almost amateur sounding at times, but still sounds magnificent! And the lyrics, oh my god the lyrics! wonderful! simply wonderful!

Fav track: This is a Heart Attack & Put back the Stars

based on 3 things:
1) album outcome (5) This album was pieced together nicely, all the songs fit together and keep the emotional roller coaster going and going
2) Lyrics (5) I loved the lyrics, always have, Blindsides words without music even are inspiring more than any others!
3) Musical talent (5) They have shown me ONCE AGAIN why I love these guys so much and will probably never stop being a die hard blindside fan!

So, in closing, this is just a review, and this is just my opinion. If you are into the old Blindside, and ONLY the old Blindside (IE, the solid state stuff) then you may not want to get this one. If you are more into the "About a Burning Fire" or "Silence", then this one is a little more up your alley, though way off at the same time! if you are an all around Blindside kinda guy, go for it! I'm pretty sure you will enjoy this one!

4 out of 5 stars keep listening.......2006-03-27

"The Great Depression" is a very different album the first time you hear it than, say, the fiftieth. While I knew all of its brilliant moments were there, they were hard to pick out at first. The album seems to suffer from a rushed, poor production job; where songs on earlier albums transitioned smoothly from sung vocals to screaming, to subtle movements or thrashing guitars, these felt unusually disjointed and choppy, especially "heart attack" and "eyelids." My recommendation would be to either A) hear them live, or B) play with your stereo's equalizer. Either way, the term "great depression" is purely figurative here- give this album time to grow on you, because ultimately, you won't be disappointed.
Not every song on this album is a success, but a lot of them are, production aside, and you can tell that the group has done some experimenting with the diversity of their sound. You won't be hitting the skip button for long, since even though there are slow moments, the album is peppered with powerful and distinctive tracks that definitely compensate; even the ones that seem unimpressive musically still have thought-provoking messages to listen for, and this is one of the things that I love the most about Blindside.

In general, "The Great Depression" moves in a new direction, but traces of earlier sounds are still there. "Come to Rest" and "Yamkela" are raw and energetic, and remind me of the first two albums; "Ask Me Now" and "Put Back the Stars" both have a narrative feel like some of the songs off of "Silence," while "City Lights" takes this element to a different level. "We Are to Follow" and "Fell in Love with the Game" are two standout tracks that show a lot of the band's musical growth; both are classically Blindside, but with a new edge and an energy that keeps things afloat.
Probably more interesting than the music, however, is the concept behind the album. In an interview with Relevant magazine, lead singer and songwriter Christian Lindskog said the band's inspiration came when they returned to the US and Sweden after doing mission work in Africa, when they noticed a creepy parallel between the growing discontment and disenchantment with life at the very top and very bottom of the economic spectrum, and this sensitivity shines through in a lot places, if not most clearly on "We're All Going to Die." Although Blindside's attempts to branch out musically are sometimes hit-or-miss, all of their character and spiritual leadership is still very present on this album, so don't let it go overlooked-- a lot of the brilliance "The Great Depression" lies beneath the surface, and this took me a few listens to discover.

4 out of 5 stars give it time.......2006-02-03

I bought this album in it's first week out back in aug, 05'.
I really liked it then and listened to it all the time for the next month. Then I kinda shelved it for a while. I saw them live in oct, 05' and picked it back up for a couple weeks and shelved it again. Then, in jan, 06' I put in the ol' player and I can't get enough. This album is a "grower" for me. But once it grew on me I loved it.

2 out of 5 stars a bit lacking..........2006-01-25

Blindside is good, but this album dosent cut it. the melodies are weak, and the guitar work drags along though the album. Christian's vocals are great as always, but its nothing special. Blindside has done better defidently.

Product Description

D,OH play fun, politically conscious, stripped-down punk with acoustic guitars, violin, cello, banjo, upright bass... well, you get the picture! They have cruised very DIY throughout their existence, self-releasing their first CD, and touring the USA many times (and Europe as well). They have also worked with a lot of friends' labels with split releases, including a split CD with GHOST MICE on Plan-It-X and a split 7" with ONE REASON on Anti-Creative. We are really excited about this record!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars my new favorite cd.......2006-07-02

If you like Against Me!, but prefer to hear it from DIY punks who still play shows in peoples' garages, you're in for a treat!

First of all, the way they utilize the cello, violin, upright bass, banjo, and harmonica to make punk songs is stunning. Some songs are fast with singalong parts, and others are well-executed folk. What I love about this album, in relation to the older stuff, is the abundance of unaccompanied female vocals;and her voice is incredible, really giving the CD overall more flavor. It does still resemble their past efforts when it comes to the passionate message, and, in addition, they even have a really rad song about skateboarding! I guarantee you will not get bored for one moment because these catchy songs will make you move.

If you haven't heard Defiance, Ohio before, this album would be a great place to start since these songs are musically more well-written, although I do recommend "Share What Ya Got" and their splits. I might add that this CD can be purchased from No Idea Records for $6, and the latter mentioned full-lenghth can be found for $5 on Defiance, OH's official site--this way you can support the BAND.

Folky punk in the vein of early Against Me! but with violin and banjo. Very nice male/female vocals. Buy all their stuffs from No Idea Records. This band will get tons of recognition very soon.

5 out of 5 stars Fine album by a fine musician.......1998-11-30

Barry Melton, also known as "The Fish," first came to national prominence as a musical recording artist in the mid-1960's as half of the folk duo "Country Joe and the Fish." "Country Joe and the Fish" eventually evolved from a folk duo to rock band and over a brief and turbulent history the band achieved national prominence for its well-crafted music and politically biting satire. Melton was one of several legendary guitarists who emerged from the San Francisco Bay Area rock scene of the 60's.

This album, "Songs of the Next Great Depression," puts all of Melton's skills on display--as a guitarist, singer and songwriter. "Espresso Chez Panise" and "Black and White" are strictly instrumental songs showing Melton's skill as an electric guitarist; while "Can't Live on Love Alone," for example is an acoustic fingerpicking gem. My favorites on the album include "Time With my Daddy," a country dobro-style ballad, and "Law and Order," a grim but accurate social commentary.

Its too bad Barry Melton gave up a promising musical career to become a criminal defense lawyer and public defender; but thank goodness he's left such a fine recording legacy behind for us all to enjoy. I've owned a copy of this album for about 10 years and I still play it once a month!!! Five Stars!

3 out of 5 stars Be warned.......2002-10-22

I hate it when you buy a CD for a particular song, then you discover they used a NON-vocal version of a song known for its lyrics. "Happy Days are Here Again" is instrumental only on this CD. I also bought a "Songs of the Civil War" CD recently that DIDN'T have a vocal version of Dixie, only instrumental. Gyp. The song listings don't warn you of an instrumental-only track, and you can't click for a 30-second preview of "Happy Days". So look out. All in all, the CD isn't bad though. Some good stuff on it.

4 out of 5 stars 30's recordings.......2001-12-05

You get 21 recordings from the 30's, so it's a bargain. This selection, the soundtrack of a PBS documentary, is weighted a bit heavily with gloomy blues/folk songs that leave the impression that popular music back then was all leftist social protest songs. One rather doubts that "NRA Blues" would be a hit in any decade, much less the decade of "Gay Divorcee," "42nd Street," Gershwin and dance bands. But Louis Armstong's "All of Me" alone makes up for all the other woe is me songs on the album. Listen to this collection, then turn on your FM radio and weep at the fall of popular music.

4 out of 5 stars a nostalgic trip to a bleak era.......2001-01-30

I can't believe no one has reviewed this yet - this is one of the best (if not the best) compilations of music from this era. The booklet is filled with photographs and information on this pivotal point in American history - socially, economically, psycholigically, and musically. Many famous artists are contained here, but in earlier stages of their careers than we have become culturally familiar with (Ellington, Armstrong). The effort to cheer up a 'depressed' nation rings through here, with a mirth and joy that we have certainly lost in these less-than-disastrous times. While a couple tracks serve better as period pieces than entertainment (Henry Ford's Orchestra?!?), this excellent collection entertains today as well as when these hot jazz and early blues songs were flowing from radios that are now antiques.

Hot tip - this may go out of print, as have many other collections from Columbia Legacy. Get it before it becomes a legacy itself!

The best DMX album I've heard so far although I haven't got his first 2. Every track is solid and delivers a "hardcore rap" style. DMX is my second favorite rapper. He's great! Only problem is-BE WARNED!-although DMX does seem to love God, this album has a "Great Depress"ive tone to it and has some heavy subjects. Not for the uplifted-spirited-happy-type people. This is for us who no what real-life is and what hardtimes are. Overall-10 *'s, a perfect DMX album!

5 out of 5 stars Out of his 5, this one #4.......2003-12-10

People said this was his worst CD, but DMX doesn't make a bad CD. All his CDs were bangers, and I dont judge CDs based on sales (whether white people bought it or not). Great Depression is better than And then there was X. Out of these 15 songs, 11 you can listen to. Thats solid for a rap CD!

    2 out of 5 stars A review of DMX's The Great Depression........2003-06-20

From what I have heard by DMX, The Great Depression is not a good album. Neither is any other of his work. You will probably only like this cd if you are into rap. I'm really not into the mainstream rap music.

I don't care for any of the tracks on here. I only bought the album because I thought that it featured somethng else on it. Plus, I unknowillingly purchased the clean version. I can't stand the edited version. The only factor that saved this record from a one star rating was the cover and photography.

You shouldn't buy this cd if you're like me.Try music like C-BO, Spyro Gyra, The Rippingotns, Skywalk, some Rush, and some Blue Oyster Cult. Those are the good groups. Thank you for taking the time and generosity to read my review.

5 out of 5 stars boring DMX album?...please.......2003-03-13

I would like to say, that DMX always improved his style...his lyrics and his beats!
so if you listen to his first album and "the great depression" you will recognize that!
    Just put yourself in the position of ANY rapper in the game;
if you would listen to DMX'z album you would get DEPRESSED!4 real!why? watch his style(better;his styles ,because on the bloodline anthem he busts plenty styles)!I don't think that any rapper is as hard as DMX! HIP-HOP is WAR and only strong Mc's will survive!
    so DMX is a survivor!

5 out of 5 stars Exellent cd in a terrific series... Secret History Of R&R!.......2004-05-17

The entire series is exellent, and it features great and well known blues artists as well as obscure and forgotten ones, who either influenced rock'n'rollers of another generation, or performed songs that rock'n'rollers covered in the 60's onward. These recordings are generally from the 20's all the way to just before WWII.

This particular cd in the When The Sun Goes Down(Bluebird) series, is titled Poor Man's Heaven-The Secret Histry Of rok'n'roll, and thsi cd differs from all the others, in taht is is primarlily white artists and vaudeville entertainers, with the acception of Sonny Boy Williamson and several other blues artists. These recordings all have to do with the great depression and the stock market crash of 1929. Great hot dancebands liek the High Hatters are here doing peppy and energetic versions of "Ten Cents A Dance" also there are some rural country artists and fiddlers, thsi cd has a veriety of unique and obscure eprformances, all are very intriguing. This cd makes a great listening from beginning to end, and si worhty of repeated listenings. From the opening spoken dialouge by Eddie Cantor to the calypso oriented ending song. A well done cd, that makes one realize that rock'n'roll didn't just happen overnight with elvis in 1955! And belive me thsi isn't just a collevtion for old people or people over 30 years old, I'm 16 and a huge rockabilyl fan, and I love this cd and the series, so I thin kit's geared towards younger generations, but evreyone will enjoy it, my Grandpa loves it, and so do my parents and friends. cool music!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Frog Holler.............2002-01-09

This gang of Pennsylvanians are awesome with a creative flair ...The music is genuine and from the heart! Looking forward to the next CD.

    4 out of 5 stars Worth recognition.......2000-02-11

The first few songs come off sounding like they're paying homage to Son Volt (Which is fine by me and sounds great), but then they develop into their own sound by the end. Pretty good, excited to see them live!

5 out of 5 stars Worth the time to listen to..........2000-01-15

This is an example of how something great can happen when very talented people with different taste "really" work together towards the same goal ... to make great music. I have seen many bands come and go. This is the first band where I always here a new energy and life with each song they create. The music on this album is a combination of Blue Grass and Rock & Roll ... with enough of both to satisfy anyone's taste.

5 out of 5 stars frog holler just keeps getting better.......2001-04-09

these guys from berks county, pa just keep getting better with every cd. darren schlappich has evolved into one of the top songwriters in the alt-country scene - bar none. try to disregard the the inevitable comparison's to bands like son volt, tupelo, etc. while it's true that if you enjoy these more known roots rock bands you'll enjoy frog holler, this band definitely has it's own sound going on. anyone who calls frog holler a 'son volt tribute' (like someone did in the reviews for holler's previous cd - adams hotel road) just isn't listening hard enough - and they've certainly never had the chance to see frog holler play live. these guys are all about having a good time, almost 'gourds like' in their ability to put on a lively performance that gets the crowd rockin' out, drankin' yuengling, and singing along. there's not a bad tune on the new cd. the lyrics run from heartbreaking to comical. the moods swing from soft solo acoustic to full band complete with horn section and raucously shouted background vocals. if you need to hear a comparison - well, there's elements of the gourds, early rolling stones, townes van zandt, and yes... son volt. 'idiots' is a good trip. do yerself a favor and pick up a copy. that way you'll be able to say 'i knew frog holler back when...', and you can start comparing the next wave of alt country bands to them.
