Back in 1990, Teddy Riley was just as influential a producer as Babyface is now--maybe even more so, because Riley had invented a whole new sound, a combination of soul harmonies, rap breaks, and hip-hop beats called new jack swing. Riley is still a gifted producer; he can link up drum-machine beats, synthesizer chords, and voices so they make the maximum impact with the minimum presence, giving his work a sleek leanness. Riley was never much of a songwriter, though, and the R&B melodies and bedroom scenarios on Another Level, the second album by his group Blackstreet, all sound recycled. It's no coincidence that the two strongest tracks are a lush ballad rearrangement of the old Beatles rocker "Can't Buy Me Love" and a Winans-like version of the DeBarge hymn "Time Will Reveal." --Geoffrey Himes

4'5 Stars - Blackstreet Reaches Another Level.......2007-06-23
"Another Level" Blackstreet's second album is truly a 90's classic. After releasing their eponymous debut album a few years earlier Teddy Riley and co. came back with a sophmore album in 1996 that was better in every way. Hollister and Little were replaced by Eric Williams and Mark Middleton but the sound was also more suited for it's time with less New Jack Swing but a fresher sound with great production and plenty of variation. It was like going from phase 1 that made Riley famous with the New Jack Swing sound with his previous group "Guy" and Blackstreet's first album to phase 2 that blends all kinds of R&B into a great concept that both worked for classic R&B fans and for commercial radio. The absolute standout here is obviously the mega hit "No Diggity" reaching #1 with a guest rap from Dr Dre. It blends Hip Hop beats with R&B perfectly without sounding like it's from the early 90's and it's sound and production is so memorable it's still fresh to this day. They continue with another good song in "Don't Leave Me Now" a midtempo that samples Debarge, the same sample that 2Pac used for "Ain't Mad at Cha", this song was a hit in Europe but not in USA. A personal version of Beatles "(Money Can't) Buy Me Love" is almost unrecognizable and therefore fascinating. "Fix" sound quite simular to "No Diggity" but is a defenite highligh and so is the sweet ballads "Good Lovin" and "I Can't Get You (Out Of My Mind). There are also several interesting interlude's if you're interested in the band further, "Deja's Poem" and "Taja's Lude where Teddy's daughters get the chance to shine and "Motherlude" where the mothers of each of the members talk of their sons and their upbringing. Closer is called "The Lord Is Real" and is a great way of ending a wonderful album. With 70 minutes it perhaps a little too long, but there are enough good songs here to make the listener content and for once we have an album with interludes that make sense. This is obviously their best album and the album you should start with if you're interested in their music. 4'5 stars.
R&B At It's Finest.......2007-01-05
I don't what it is with Teddy Riley & groups as every group he's with he surpasses the first disc with their sophmore disc. This was the case with Guy's The Future and the same idea rings true in Another Level. With addition of Eric Williams and Mark Middelton the group reaches new heights of R&B. Of course the disc featured the hit singles No Diggity,Don't Leave Me and Fix, but some of the finest songs on the CD were album tracks. The ballads I Wanna Be Your Man, Let's Stay In Love and I Can't Get You Out Of Mind all serve as a true testament to what R&B should be.
A level above others .......2006-12-15
From one track to another Blackstreet brings the goods and once again. I find myself disagreeing with the short amazon review on "Another Level". From "No Diggity" w/Dr. Dre & Queen Pen one of the obvious smash hits from this great CD. To "Fix" which has a pretty cool video attached to the song. "(Money Can't) Buy Me Love" is redone rather well by the guys in Blackstreet much to my surprise. "Let's Stay In Love" another solid ballad which what i clearly enjoy from Blackstreet and its done well.
The cd has a uniformity to it first coming with the uptempo songs like "No Diggity", "Fix" and "Good Lovin". Then switching gears nicely to slower jams like the hit "Don't Leave Me", "Never Gonna Let You Go" and "I Wanna Be Your Man" along with the previously mentioned "Money". While the latter half of "Another Level" is made up more of slow jams. The songs are on point and don't drag down the CD overall in my opinion. With "I Can't Get You (Out of my Mind) and The Lord is Real (Time Will Reveal) among them.
A couple uptempo songs come between these "I'll Give It To You" and Happy Song (Tonite) another one of my many favorite tracks on a CD that's done well and brings Blackstreet into a new arena.
Yes even 10 years later this CD is still right up there with the really good ones.
10 years later this album still bangs.......2006-10-07
This is one of the best albums of all time, nobody makes albums like this anymore, Teddy Riley shows how much of a music genious he is on this one, I basically know all the tracks on here like the back of my hand I played it so much over the last 10 years, I originally got this on cassette when it came out but I got it on CD recently
I actually got it around the same time as I got New Edition's "Home Again", which another fan mentioned here, it's another classic album that's a must for r&b/hip-hop fans btw, I really wish that I could get that feeling again of rushing out to get great albums, the '90s was such a great time for music but I can't really stand much of what's out there now, they're just few and in between to find now, anyway back to the review my favorite tracks on here are "Good Lovin'", "The Lord Is Real", "Don't Leave Me", "Fix", and of course the most popular track "No Diggity" with Dr. Dre and Queen Pen, this album got the perfect blend of hip-hop grooves and soulful melodies, if you're a fan of r&b and hip-hop music and never heard this album I suggest that you pick up this timeless classic, and btw if Teddy Riley reads this we need another Blackstreet album dawg ASAP, there ain't too many real artists out there these days
One Of The Best Albums of ALL TIME!.......2006-09-05
I am quite a picky person when it comes to good R&B music. No other album has ever sounded so good, especially when R&B was at it's prime in '96. Every song is outstanding on this CD, it was a keeper then and still is now...maybe even moreso -- just compare it to all that crap playing on the radio these days! Another Teddy Riley joint, holdin' it down fo all tha playas and all tha hustlas.....but mostly holdin' it down the for lover in you. Definitely one of my favourite CD's. Please do yourself a favour and cop this one.

A classic and timeless album - must have!.......2007-04-07
I love all songs on this album, even the intro! This is just a perfect blend of funk, 90's R&B, new jack swing, smooth ballads and hip hop beats. This is Teddy Riley at his best (except guy's "the future").
gentlemen of soul.......2007-02-13
This C/D is awesome,("before i let u go.")is definitely baby making material[two thumbs up!]
A slice of R&B thrown in with a bit of hip hop.......2007-01-05
Blackstreet debut disc featured the hit Booti Call but it was the slow jam Before I Let You Go which pushed the group into the forefront. Dave Holister's on Before I Let You Go grab as soon as the first instrument is heard on the song. The other stand out slow cuts on the disc include Joy,Tonight's The Night and the sensual I Wanna Make Love.
My God!!.......2006-10-19
This cd is worth the purchase for "Joy" and "Before I Let U Go"
alone. Everytime I hear Joy, my skin tingles
New Jack Swing...R&B...and Blackstreet (for that matter) At It's Best!!.......2006-09-04
I can't believe anyone who says that this CD is just "OK" because that just isn't right. Anyone who doesn't appreciate early 90's (1994) R&B, New Jack Swing, music isn't a fan of R&B -- just like some people loved and hated Def Leopard. It just depends on what kind of music you enjoy. New Jack was short-lived but played an integral part in the creation of modern R&B. This CD was the transition from Old to New School for that time.
The TRUE harmoney composed of the original members: Riley, Chauncey Hannibal, Levi Little and David Hollister. The latter 2 were later replaced by tenor Mark Middleton and baritone Eric Williams. No one has ever been able to imitate or mimic these OG's in the slightest way.
This whole album is damn good...some favourites include the fast: Baby Be Mine, U Blow My Mind, Good Life (awesome), Physical Thing, Make U Wet (awesome), Booti Call, Love's In Need (awesome harmony), Givin' You All My Lovin' (great). The other half of the CD inludes my favourite slow jams: Joy (classic), (Before I Let You Go (another classic), Falling In Love Again (saaweeeet!), Tonight's The Night (real nice), Happy Home (awesome). I can't express how well-put-together the harmonies are on this album, when Teddy Riley compiled and pumped the fast and slow jams...smooth like butta! A MUST if you love, like, or just sometimes hear R&B....make sure you get this classic!!!!

Average Best of CD.......2007-07-26
I like the CD. But some of the songs are not their best songs from this group.
A good sense of Blackstreet's music of the 1990s.......2007-01-05
No Diggity: The Very Best of Blackstreet opens up with the oringal verison of Baby Be Mine featured on the CB4 soundtrack after which we are taken on a musical time-line of one of the best groups of the mid nineties. All of the group's biggest hits are featured, among them, of course, the platinum-selling title cut,Booti Call and the classic ballads Don't Leave Me, and Before I Let You Go. One of the main highlights of the disc is that the disc includes quality album tracks such as Falling In Love Again, Never Gonna Let You Go and my personal favorite Money Can't Buy You Love. To sum it all up this is Blackstreet at their best.
One of the best groups.......2005-11-26
I love Blackstreet. Their voices are superb and their music is so good and soulful and sexy and great all round. Apart from the Billie Jean remake (which I personally don't like), all other songs are great and I especially love Don't Leave Me and Tonights The Night. I wish they were a bigger act than they are because they deserve more aclaim considering how great they really are. I just hope that they keep making more music and I know for sure I'll keep buying. This is a must buy album for any R'n B fan.
MISSING BLACKSTREET.......2005-06-20
BLACKSTREET HAD THAT SOMETHING ABOUT THEM. THEY HAD THAT SOUL THAT COULD NOT BE TOUCHED AND THE VIBE THAT BLACKSTREET HAD WAS SURBERB. THEY CAN REALLY SING BUT THEY WERE CHEATED AS WELL. THEY DIDNT GET THE AIR TIME THEY DESERVE.
Excellent! .......2004-10-06
What's remarkable about this album is that Blackstreet had 14 charted singles off of three albums and some soundtracks. And the ones that peaked at #54 or lower are just as strong as the No. 1s and Top 10 hits on here. It is funky, soulful, danceable and spiritual. All the hits such as Booti Call, Girlfriend/Boyfriend, No Diggety (which they won a Grammy Award for), Before I Let You Go, and many others are on here. Perhaps the most dramatical song on here is the last one The Lord Is Real, which is so soulful, moving, had me crying, and sounds as if it was recorded in a church. This shows the group at their best and Dave Hollister can sure be SAANGING it at the closing part of that song! Excellent closing to a compilation album!

Teddy Riley has been in the game for 15 years now, and still knows how to keep up with the fast-changing R&B and hip-hop worlds. On Blackstreet's third album he employs all the current tricks, including an impressive list of cameos (Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder, and Jay-Z), but you have to wonder what it would sound like if he simply delivered more of the classic party-jam funk that was responsible for past hits "No Diggity" and "Booty Call." Riley doesn't need some of the production gimmicks he uses here; at first listen the songs can be jarring, though by the third or fourth spin, they sound as fresh as everything else he produces. As soulful and emotional as the ballads are, it's the dance-floor shakers "Boyfriend/Girlfriend," "Can You Feel It," and "On the Floor" that keep Blackstreet in position as soul superstars. --Rebecca Wallwork
Customer Reviews:
The downward spiral begin with this disc.......2007-01-05
After releasing two back to back discs, Blackstreet began their downward spiral with this medicore CD. For starters the group is without the smooth falestto of Mark Middleton and instead were giving Terrel Phillips. Second the huge single Take Me There is presented in a weak remix and finally there's only good ballad on the CD which is Think About You. I don't know what happened to the Blackstreet from the excllent Another Level because they for sure aren't on this disc.
Its still good.......2006-12-15
While "finally" isnt as good as "Another Level". What is offered on the CD is more than enough at least for me to give this CD four stars which is solid. I actually found myself enjoying "In A Rush" to me its simple and the song doesnt do a whole lot but then again it doesnt need to. Just a listen or two to the song just something about the song had me enjoying each time i listened to it. Also "Girlfriend/Boyfriend" with Janet Jackson an obvious selection as a single and the song works with the guys trading lines back and forth with her. Also an equally enjoyable video accompanies this song as well. Normally i dont enjoy most intros on artist cds but i really enjoyed the "Blackstreet Intro" on this cd the vocals of the female on this...i just really liked it. Also enjoyable "Can You Feel me" which takes a sample from Michael Jackson's song "Can You Feel it" and works it around nicely.
"Drama" with Mary J is easily one of the most enjoyable tracks on the cd for me. They just picked the right person to hook up with on this song and Mary works her part of the song like no other. A definite slow burner and a very worthy song to the CD. Other songs that are worth a few listens the title track "Finally" and "I'm Sorry. Also enjoyed the "take me there (remix) its from Nickolodeon and everything but its still pretty decent.
All in all while its not quite there with their previous release. Blackstreet shows they know how to put together a solid album.
Finally went Gold!!.......2005-11-13
I remember this album when I was in the 6th-7th grade. I love this CD. This album is a definitive statement, the end of the 20th century. This record sets the template for what R&B must sound like as they entered in 2000. This album is about R&B that is willing to work without a net. It is confident and schooled enught to give the peeps what they want and deserved, like everything Teddy has touched in his years making music. It is that bag of chips and the possibilities and the promise of R&B, delivered by four of its soulful practitioners. This album has been certified Gold. Remember, this was 1999.
Good Job........2004-01-08
I think the first BLACKStreet Album is one of the best Albums ever. 'No diggity' probably top 3 of all songs that have come out in the last 8 years. And 'Another level' was Another level. Anyway, I loved this one also, especially the poetry that was in 'black and white'. Also Loved 'Im sorry.' It's almost too sweet. My criteria, Put it in the player, and you can listen to it over and over again.
Wackstreet.......2003-02-27
Remember how on BLACKstreet's second album they tried the revolving door concept and brought in two new members? And remember how surprising it was that the idea worked? Well, for this album, Teddy tried the concept AGAIN and brought in Terrell Phillips to replace Mark Middleton. (Why Teddy thought replacing Mark was a good idea remains a mystery.) And while this album is not as long as its predecessor, it's not as good either. In fact, it's not even close.
It's hard to say what's the worst song on this album, as most of them are pretty stupid, ranging from the lazy "Girlfriend/Boyfriend" to "Can You Feel Me", which uncreatively samples Jackson 5' "Can You Feel It" yet again. And then lyrics don't impress either. "Think About You" says things like "I put on my clothes and I think about you" and "I fix my dinner and I think about you". (By the way, remember the video when the bridge came on? Were those supposed to be moves?) And the chorus to "Black & White" goes: "I dream in black and white/But I make love in color." WTF?
Even though the production and harmony get better toward the end of the album, it still can't save songs like "In A Rush", which sounds like it was written, well, in a rush. And the last three songs feel like they were thrown on to fill up space. Two of them are gospel songs, and the other one is the "Take Me There" remix from the Rugrats movie soundtrack (without the rap, I must add). I have two things to say about that: 1) if you record a song for Nickelodeon, you shouldn't put it on your album because its theme makes it sound like it doesn't belong, and 2) when the best song on your album is a kiddie song, there's something seriously wrong.
This album was very, very disappointing. Also, Teddy Riley seems to be plagued with deep involvement with sloppy projects. Guy III wasn't any better, and BLACKstreet's "comeback" album Level II (but isn't that their FOURTH album?) got pushed back for the umpteenth time. But if that song "Deep" is any indication as to what is expected in the future, I don't think I'll be checking for it.

A couple of levels down from Another Level.....................2007-05-24
Too many sub par hiphoppy joints bring down the quality of Level II. What's up with the explicit lyrics? Too much talent for that.

These R&B thugs get no love.......2007-01-05
Blackstreet was one of the most promisng R&B groups of the nineties but why they decided to change their image into R&B thugs is questionable to me. Level II was one of the worst R&B cd's ever released and only has two good songs the opener Ticket To Ride and the slow jam Deep. Other wise skip this one.
Down To Level II .......2004-08-09
It's been years since BLACKstreet's last cohesive effort. (This does not include 'Finally' in 1999...which was far from a good album) In the last five years, Teddy Riley has gone from a bad BLACKstreet lineup change/album(Terrell Philips replaced Mark Middleton on 'Finally'), a failed Guy reunion, a not-so-Invincible Michael Jackson album, a bankruptcy stage and now this: the return of the 'Another Level' era BLACKstreet (their most successful lineup to date)
What keeps this album from being better than good is that there is no real outstanding material. "Don't Touch" samples The Commodores' "Brick House", but that's all it does. You can only endure the beginning of "Wizzy Wow", owner of a largely annoying and lazy hook(I think Wizzy was supposed to be the 21st century version of 'No Diggity' but whatever). The good tracks are the ballads: the haunting "Look In The Water", the Human Nature-sampled "Why? Why?", the acoustic "Bygones", the sweet "How We Do", and the mid-tempo "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye".
There's no denying Teddy Riley's impact as an innovator/producer, or for that matter, the talents of Chauncey Hannibal, Eric Williams and Mark Middleton (who should've never left the fold in '98). But this effort lacks the luster that should take them higher than "Level II". TR is still a talented producer, and it remains to be seen whether he or BLACKstreet can re-capture their late-90's glory. Furthermore, question: how can Teddy keep this BLACKstreet lineup together this time around? Answer: a comeback hit or a great album. No Diggity.
IT THE TRUTH.......2004-07-09
TO me the CD was off the hook I dont know why people didnt look it. It had a alot of good songs. Even thou it couldnt compare to anoter level the cd still is hitting and I wish that they will come out with something new.
horrible.......2004-03-25
this cd was absolutely worthless. I am glad i got this album burned and didnt go buy it in stores. Do not pick up this cd. I felt blackstreet could have produced some better songs but they didnt. Dont buy it, dont even burn it
