Rock-A-Billy Review.......2007-02-07
The song selections on this cd are not as strong as the "Ain't I'm a Dog" disc, but still well worth the money. If nothing else Johnny Horton's Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor and the Coop cover art are worth the price of the cd. Rock-A-Billy fans will enjoy most all of the tracks.

OK I Guess.......2006-05-02
I was a little disappointed in this one. The second is way better by far. Not that all the songs suck there is a handful of good ones The Collin Kids "Whistle Bait" and "Bo Bo Skadaddle" other than that I wouldn't recommend this to somebody who is wanting to hear the Rockabilly sound (Try "Ain't I'm a Dog" for that).
Whistle Bait.......2006-03-13
This type of music takes me back to a feel good time in my life. I heard most of these songs on a static filled radio stations.... Ahh, take me back........Mick Addington
GREAT COMPANION TO THE "AIN'T I'M A DOG" CD.......2006-01-22
I GOT THE ABOVE TITLE FROM ANOTHER VENDER AND THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO SEND THIS ONE AND THIS IS ABSOLUTLY THE BEST ROCKABILLY ON RECORD/CD. COLUMBIA RECORDS WAS NOT KNOWN FOR THEIR ROCK AND ROLL IN THE 50'S AND IF THIS IS NOT ROCK AND ROLL I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS. GET THIS CD AND THE COMPANION "AIN'T I'M A DOG". YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A FIVE STAR RATING INSTEAD OF ONE--IT WAS ENTERED BY MISTAKE.
Like drinking good Scotch on the rocks.......2006-01-21
I thought this CD would just be a good way to get introduced to some of the not-so-famous-as-Carl-Perkins rockabilly singers of the '50s. (To correct the last reviewer, all of the tracks on the CD were recorded in the '50s per the liner notes.) And a great introduction it is, but the sound quality is excellent, despite apparently being mono recordings, and thus the CD is fun to listen to as well as being good rockabilly schooling. "Ain't I'm a Dog," the companion CD, is just as good.

Customer Reviews:
Remember that NYC Times Square Billboard?.......2007-01-12
I sure do, getting older but I do recall walking around seeing the cover of PinUps for millions to see upon it's release...the beauty of this album, its artwork, was its primal energy and the fact that Bowie was able to redo these strong songs his own way backed by the Spiders, one heck of a band that rocks.
Coming out when Bowie was IT, what you have are wonderful songs that were Bowie's favourites at the time..his reminiscing back onto the swinging UK mod scene with the gorgeous single 45 Sorrow worth the album alone.
Totally redoing the originals the chameleon that is Bowie plays a nice sax and a nice time is guaranteed for all spinning this CD.
Indeed, the earlier Ryko cd release has 2 bonus cuts, the b side of Sorrow..the dirge like accoustic Bowie alone on guitar Port Of Amsterdam and a cover of Bruce Springsteen's Growin Up done at the PinUp sessions with a somewhat hoarse playful funky feel..
Not one of Bowie's best, some good moment's though.......2006-10-18
Covers album, really should listen to Ziggy, Aladdin and the Dogs before this one, though I admit that Bowie does an excellent job on SEE EMILY PLAY (I'm a HUGE Floyd fan also and yet Bowie improves on one of their early classics!) though Bowie TOTALLY WRECKS the Who covers. Very mixed bag, is PINUPS.
David Bowie - 'Pin Ups' (Virgin).......2006-09-25
Yet another David Bowie release that I've forgot ALL about.I think I used to have this album on 8-track.May,in fact even still have it.Either way,it's a pleasure to check out these twelve covers, remastered on CD.Tracks that I vaguely remember are Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play",the two Who covers "I Can't Explain" and "Anyway,Anyhow,Anywhere" as well as the two Yardbirds cuts "Shapes Of Things" and the rousing "I Wish You Would".But one of the absolute better tunes on here may very well be the Pretty Thing's party-stomper "Rosalyn".Every band should cover this tune at one time or another.A should-have.
Bowie Does The Covertune Album That Time Forgot.......2005-12-14
In 1973 David Bowie came out with an album of Covers called Pin Ups. The cover had himself and the model Twiggy dressed like Fembots from an episode of The Bionic Woman or some post Logan's Run version of clones. Anyway... most people don't remember this Bowie outing, sandwiched in between Aladin Sane and Diamond Dogs. Mostly tunes by The Who, Pretty Things and Syd's Pink Floyd, there are some cool stuff here. Rosalyn, I Can't Explain, Where Have All The Good Times Gone, Shapes Of Things & Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere. Overall a very enjoyable listen. The original Ryko re-issue had two extra tracks: Springsteen's Growin' Up & Port Of Amsterdam. Definitely worth it to find that edition.
Dig it!
A Toss Off, and a Classic.......2005-11-05
At the time, Pinups appeared to be little more than a quick toss-off, a means of pushing out something fun before digging into the next serious `project'. I suppose that it still remains the same even now, only that it has taken on an aura all its own in the past thirty years (my God, has it been that long?). Pinups shows Bowie paying tribute to the bands that had influenced and inspired him while growing up in the sixties. From the perspective of a new millennium, it might be hard to conceive of a time when, like most other English kids, David Bowie was a fan and not a superstar, but he was. In his pre-Ziggy, pre-superstar, pre-pubescent era, he loved Pink Floyd, the Who the Kinks and the Pretty Things like any school-aged English boy would. As it turns out, he was no ordinary schoolboy, and his interpretations of these songs are hardly ordinary, either. Bowie plays with the arrangements of these classic (or semi-classic) compositions, treating them reverently but never resorting to straight cover versions.
Taking a cue from his magnificent remake of the Rolling Stones' "Let's Spend the Night Together" on Aladdin Sane, Bowie brings as much as he borrows. Because of its oddities and idiosyncasies, Syd Barrett's (of Pink Floyd) "See Emily Play" is not a song that could normally be considered for a cover version, but Bowie does a magnificent job of it, retooling it as a psycho-surreal workout for the fabulously gifted pianist Mike Garson and drummer Aynsley Dunbar. Other arrangements that transcend expectations are "Friday On My Mind" (with the `zoom zoom zoom-zoom-zoom' backing vocals a la Esquivel) and "Rosalyn", a rocker that Bowie turns into something resembling psycho-billy.
As for the rest of the album, there are high points ("Sorrow", "Everything's Alright") and moments of mediocrity ("Shapes of Things" "Where Have All the Good Times Gone", and "I Can't Explain" don't offer much that's new in their interpretation here), but it never gets bland, and it's never anywhere near bad. At this point, Bowie was cruising high and firing on all cylinders. He was slowly working his way away from the `Ziggy' persona, but Pinups catches Bowie at a time when he and his creation melded naturally, and as such, it is also one of the least pretentious works of Bowie's career. A- Tom Ryan

Fantastic. You'll be a hero to your kids and the other parents you know........2007-06-19
It's unbelievable this collection is only in import! The whole disc is a real pleasure to listen to and some songs (Snow Patrol's "I am an Astronaut" and Belle and Sebastian's "Monkeys Are Breaking out the Zoo") are instant kid-friendly classics. You may not know all of the artists but it makes for a very well rounded collection for all age groups to enjoy.
For parents who are tired of Raffie.......2007-03-22
Your kids want to hear "Sharon, Lois and Bram" AGAIN, and you want to put on "Pulp"...the compromise is "Colours are Brighter". The whole family gets to rock it out in the living room to the likes of "The Flaming Lips" and "Franz Ferdinand". Our favouite tune is one by "The Barcelona Pavilion", a catchy little ditty called "Tidy Up Tidy Up (put it away!)" that makes even the most onerous task of putting toys back in the toy box, or making the bed, a real hoot. Highly recommended by our little tribe, and even if you haven't got one yet, you will still love some of these rare little gems done by some of today's best bands.

Not Mainstream Rockabilly.......2007-07-10
What's mainstream Rockabilly?
Carl perkins, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash, some Wanda Jackson.
Mainstream is a purer more refined sound.
This is pretty rough.
I would advise everyone to listen to the sound bites first so your no suprised. I never have been able to listen with Windows media Player to this sound bites although I use it for other music.
To use Amazom sound you need the new Mozilla Foxfire and Real player.
Even then some cds don't have the sound bites available.
I love Rockabilly, I guess with more of a country flavor than rock.
When asked to tag this product some of the suggestions were 50s punk, 50s punk rock. I'd say that fits the cd more than Rockabilly does.
They always say rockabilly was the punkrock of its day.......2006-11-02
And this proves it. For sheer power and angst, nothing beats the early rockabily stylings that were fusing jazz, country, and teen hormones at a furious rate. There is some delicious Carl Perkins on this one, and I think some Link Wray, and although there are better examples of the pacesetters of the day, this one is a nice perspective of the more obscure artists out there.
Great Rockabilly from the Columbia Vaults!.......2006-05-02
This CD is way better than the first! First you have the insane hillbilly Ronnie Self belting out "forget about the danger and think of the fun" in a screw you devil be damned sneer to 1950's conformity! Then you have the awesome ghostly echoing song by Carl Perkins "Where the Rio Flows"! Link Wray laying down strip tease raunch in "New Studio Blues"! What more could you want! Songs that are white trash, rebellion, lustful, and crazy. Hear the barb wire guitars assault your ears! Hear the violent slapping of the stand up bass! The pummeling drums! The Screaming insane vocals! Got to have it!
Just what I hoped for and more.......2006-01-21
Bought this along with the "Whistle Bait" compilation -- it's fun and full of energy, and the sound quality is great. Plus, I'd like to buy a wall calendar from whoever designed the album cover. I had this CD on through my headphones at the gym this morning -- great workout music!
It's alright.......2000-08-18
Well I'm a big fan of rockabilly and this album is alright,It's not the best but it will keep you in a good mood for hours:)

Customer Reviews:
my daughter loves this!.......2006-07-19
My 7 year old daughter loves this CD! So do all her friends. She listens all the time and it is our favorite sing along for the car. Of course, as an adult I like the real Beatles the best...but I was pleasantly surprised at how good these kids versions are. I don't understand all the "how dare they do this with the Beatles" stuff that some people blabber about. For me it works...my daughter loves it and now seems more interested in my other Beatles CDs, AND I much prefer hearing this over and over again versus some of the other kids music we have.
Not better than The Beatles.......2006-07-14
The songs are supposedly sung by kids, but some of them are sung so similarly to the originals that it's hard to tell. Not that it's BAD that the songs are similar, it's just that, well, it's just not an improvement to the real Beatles, so why not just get a CD of the Beatles. I also bought Beatles 1 at the same time, and my 2 yr old loves listening to it. Get that instead.
The Best Kids Music CD!.......2005-10-13
This is the best kids music CD we own. All three of my kids (ages 1 through 7) love listening to it. The best part of it is that I enjoy it too. Of course I have all the original Beatles records, but this CD does such a great job of introducing the kids to this music that it's fun for me and my husband too. Like another reviewer said, my kids weren't interested in the real Beatles recordings before. But after listening to this for a while, they are starting to enjoy both - The Bingo version and the originals. What a great idea. What a great album. I wish they would do the same with other groups. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
A gateway to the Beatles.......2005-09-11
This cd is a good introduction to the Beatles. While the original recordings of these songs are my preference, that wasn't the case with my two year old. She didn't take to the originals. So these versions provided the necessary gateway to the originals. The songs are recreated very faithfully, but with children singing most of the chorus'. This was what was needed to create the interest for my child. After a few weeks of listening a seamless transition to the "#1's" was accomplished.
Great Stuff!.......2005-04-22
I love this album. My kids love to listen to both the original Beatles and these versions. They especially love to listen to other kids singing! These versions seem to be made with the highest quality in mind and with respect for the orignal versions. After we got this album my children were dancing around and singing along. They request it over and over and the nice part is that it is also great for my wife and I to listen to (more so than other kids albums like The Wiggles). I highly recommend this album.

Rave-Ups Last Chance, Another Sparkler.......2007-02-28
To keep this short and sweet: it's a damm shame that The Rave-Ups didn't "make it." Each one of their three albums ("Town & Country" and "Book of your Regrets" are the other two) have enough gems to garner more than enough popular acclaim. But, that's life, and "Chance" represents their final effort to crack through the ice into absolute omnipresence. "Chance" should have done the trick, what with songs like "Best That I Can't," "For the Loser," and "She Says (Come Around)," all of which rock, roll, and feature razor-sharp wit and superb story-telling. "Watching Out for Jesus," features great harmonies and a ripping lead guitar. "Smile," well, if you have a kid, the song might well become a staple on those compilation tapes that you make every now and then. All in all, like their previous releases, "Chance" gets you humming along right from the start, and keeps you interested throughout.
rave-up rocks!.......2006-05-20
I have to say that the album chance from the rave-ups is one of the best albums. The album chance is the quinteessential indy rock album that all of these small record labels aspire to have signed to them. The song that stuck out most is chance. The guitar sounds in the begining have just a hook that you can't possibly not like them. The Lyrics are also great that you have no choice but to realize how personal this album must have been to make. To me the band did not get the recognition they deserved. It's is a shame that Jimmer Podrasky and the boys decided to disengage.
Fantastic Album.......2006-03-07
Too bad they hung it up. I agree with all the others, but "The Best I Can't" does it best for me. BUY THIS...
They do have another album.......2005-01-18
called the Book of your regrets... not quite as good as Chance but very listenable.
Great album!.......2004-09-10
This music might be called roots alternative rock. Every song is great. I was hoping this band continued on but I know of no more releases for this band :-( If you thinking of getting this CD get a used one before they are all gone. I'm sure as heck not selling mine! Highly recommended catchy rock tunes.

Get F-ed Up!.......2007-04-27
Now if you've heard the FUps in the past, you've probably heard "Lazy Generation" on your copy of "Burnout 3: Takedown" a dozen to a million times...but that's not the whole package here. The brand spankin' new FUps CD is great. All the songs flow very well and sound awesome. I'm much more into classic rock, hard rock, and metal but I still hold on to my punk roots. This music is definately alternative punk rock at its finest. Very good for the money.
There's a reason they lost their record deal.......2006-07-16
This album isn't really all that great. I come from the same hometown they do, so I've seen them live a few times. Their music is more or less pop-punk, but not very good pop-punk. They appear to be going for the punk look with their mohawk styles, but it doesn't quite come across. A few are their songs are somewhat catchy, but more or less are obnoxious. They don't sound that interesting live and there are much better pop-punk and punk bands in the respective genres. Also, on a peronsal level, I think Travis and Chris are a bunch of jerks. I've never once talked to them where they weren't completely drunk or stoned, and they usually came off as really stupid people. If you're looking for a good pop-punk bands I'd recommend the Movielife, MxPx, or The Unlovables. If you're looking for something harder and more punk I suppose go with Pennywise, NOFX, Lagwagon, Lifetime, or Strike Anywhere. If you're looking for something to satisfy you're pre modern pop-punk and punk tastes go with Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, or 7 Seconds.
So Much Potential.......2005-06-08
There are a few great songs on this CD. Based on the look of these guys, I assumed them to be a bit more hard core than they are. They are a cross between core and pop with a little too much toward the pop. Some of the lyrics are juvenile and they use the "F" word in many places and occasions where it isn't necessary. Foul languange is a part of punk and is used to make a statement and drive a point home. Here it seems to be used for effect rather than coming from genuine passion. Listen to it and you'll see what I mean. In some songs they show signs of a great sense of cynical humor. Good musicians, excellent vocals and back up vocals. If they drop the poser stuff, stop listening to the suits and let it rip, they can be a great band. Come on guys, let's see a new CD with more guts.
Jessica's review.......2005-06-05
Personally, I think these guys rock! I saw them at the warped tour last summer. So maybe they dont have much variety with the sound of their songs, but they're still good. You have to consider the type of music they're playing before you judge the sound, and they dont care anyways b-cuz they just play what they play, and if you people knew anything about music you'd know that, and then you would atleast have sense enough to not want to go to their show to slap them! Well i like them. And I'm from southern MN so I gotta represent. You haters giving negative reviews need to get a life.
whats with all the negative waves on reviews?.......2005-05-05
I'm 54 years old, and I love the sound of this band, their humor, and their expression of timeless teenage problems. When I first heard the album, I told my daughter they were a cross of The Ramones and Simple Plan. The negative reviews seem to be from the live experience, which I cannot comment on. But the album itself, in my opinion, is kick-ass. I love it.

The good ole' stuff........2007-04-03
Goldfinger sure has changed over the years. They're no longer ska...infact they're quite the opposite. Their new material leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion and I've since lost interest in the band.
This a great album, bringing us back a decade ago into the world of ska-punk and all its charm. Funny enough, the album was very much a studio assembled piece of work. Although the core 4 members were a band already, there's a ton of cameos on the CD, including Scott and Dan from Reel Big Fish on horns, and Angelo Moore from Fishbone on saxaphone and backup vocals. This obviously to satisfy the at-the-time popularity of ska. Regardless, the result is great and very much missed among Goldfinger's new material.
The CD itself is a great mix of ska, punk, rock, and a fusion of all three. The album's most recognized track 'Superman', made famous by Tony Hawk Pro Skater, kicks the album off just right. Fast, catchy, and with plenty of horns. My personal favorite is 'Carlita'. It's an amazing ska rooted song, with just enough rock thrown in to get you through and wet your appetite. Angelo Moore's backups take it to the next level, and his sax solo's are simply amazing.
This is by far Goldfinger's best work, and it's a shame we won't hear anything like it from them anytime soon.
Pretty sweet.......2006-07-29
I love this album. There are a lot of good songs on it and there's quite a bit of variety on this. Some songs are fun, some are relaxing, and some are great to listen to when you're mad! Congrats on a great album, Goldfinger.
Classic.......2005-10-23
This is a classic 90s ska album. It's just perfect to sing along with. After this, Goldfinger just went downhill. There are a few songs today that are good, but most of them suck. Why did you get rid of the horns John? Whyyyyyyyyyyyy??????
this is talent.......2005-05-27
This is my favoriot CD. This was before the band got caught up in bad lyrics and peta.
Good stuff.......2004-12-16
This CD gives me some serious nostalgia, because the first track, "Superman", was featured on the first Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for the N64 and PS1. It's a real throwback for me, and for the rest of you people who recognize it. As for the rest of the tracks, this album is quite listenable. I still don't get why the last track is 36 minutes long when only 8 minutes of it is really used for music. Stupid. But anyway, if you're just looking for some good punk, then get it.

Album Description
Starting out in the mid 1990's in Princeton, NJ - Saves The Day rocked the Jersey punk scene. So what is so special about this new album? The band has come up with 19 tracks dating back from when they were teenagers up to a live track from a recent tour. You can hear the clear progression from the tracks that were demo'd in Chris Conley's basement til;l present day. All 19 tracks are extremely rare if not unreleased.

Saves The Day's "Ups and Downs" Definitely Up.......2005-10-12
I am 38 years old and I have been a fan of Saves The Day for some time. Their newest release titled "Ups and Downs" is actually a release of older material, some of which was not previously released. In a word it is GREAT. The tracks on this cd show how good these guys can be if they stay true to their music and stop trying to be all things to all people. Saves The Day gives a phenominal live performance and the last track on the cd proves that. This is a cd that any fan of Saves The Day should have. I only hope their future work will be worthy of that endorsement.
Saves The Day Rules The World.......2004-09-23
After their last cd I was a little dissapointed in Saves The Day. When I herd that they were coming out with this one I new it was going to be great. I already herd about half the songs on this cd but I still couldn't wait. I have been a fan of Saves The Day for about 3 years now. Since that time I have herd everything by them. They are one of the best bands out right now. If you ever liked anything by them then you'll like this cd, a lot. It has everything from acoustic to fast punk. Buy it now, along with Stay What You Are and Through Being Cool
Please come dive in puddles with me. .......2004-09-15
I think because i knew it was coming out relatively early, i got my hopes up. Saves the Day is my favorite band, and i was so excited about them releasing something new. I didn't quite understand why basically the whole entire ep "I'm sorry i'm leaving" was on this cd, but i still like the cd none the less. I liked that a good amount of it was acoustic, but some fast too, because you can listen to it regardless of your mood. I was a bit dissapointed, because i was thinking more unreleased stuff would be put on it, but i love it none the less.
Stay cute, and have a nice day.
AN ABSOLUTE MUST!!!!!.......2004-09-11
I saw no real good reviews so i thought that i would try one. Wow. I don't know where to start with this. It is incredibly amazing, from start to finish. One of the best things about it is that it has liner notes inside and Chris describes when and where he wrote the songs. It has awesome pictures from when they were younger.
Ups & Downs: 10/10 This song is really awesome. It reminds me of the times when they made Stay What You Are, because that's where this is from. The guitar goes sooo well with the drums and the lyrics and vocals are amazing.
Sell My Old Clothes, I'm Off To Heaven: 10/10 What can i say, this song is an absolute classic. They play it live alot at shows and this one, you can tell Chris is really young. The lyrics are soooo good like, "I know blue eyes get boring
But I'll wear dark glasses all the time And hey if you want me to I'll take a knife to My own bright eyes." OR "There's a beautiful sky tonight And if you were by my side then we could share this but you are gone.." Yes I just really want you all to buy this and support them!
A Drag In D-Flat: 10/10 Wonderful wonderful song. The guitar is soooo beautiful in here and everything compliments very well. Lyrics like "I am not afriad of what it takes to glue you to my side even if it takes a little bleeding, so be it. I would go without breathing and I don't have to justify it. you just watch me. ive got time to kill" leave you in awe. The double vocals in the end are what makes the song i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-e.
Then they have the four songs from "I'm Sorry I'm Leaving". I love those songs but i usually skip them/10 The lyrics are awesome. The guitar is very good. It is so catchy. I love it.
The Art of Misplacing FireArms: 10/10 All i have to say is "friends don't mean a thing when you can actually feel the knife sticking in your spine.."
Dave Feels Right: 10/10 The end is the best part. Beautiful.
When it isn't like it should Be: 13/10 I LOVE THIS SONG. You just have to hear it. He sings with such emotion in this song. Lyrics are very very very well done.
Clash City Rocker: 11/10 This song is super catchy. Guitar is so good in here. The end is awesome.
I also love Cheer and the Jessie & My Whetstone live is soo good too.
STOP READING BUY THIS NOW!!!!
Good, but hardly essential........2004-08-27
I can't say I'm all that disappointed in this album, just not particularly excited by it.
I love a Drag in D Flat, track 3... and really all 3 songs recorded in 2000, as they sound sort of in-between Through Being Cool and Stay What you are, which are my favorite two albums by Saves the Day. Track 1 is excellent and sounds right off of Stay What you Are.
Of course, all the tracks from the acoustic EP are very good, but... I already own that cd. In fact I'm not sure why they're considered rarities, as thats an easily obtained album. Ugh. I guess I was really hoping for more stuff that was harder to track down. The live track is nice, and if it was recorded at the show in Asbury Park NJ that kicked off the TBS/Saves the Day fall tour then I was at that show, which is pretty cool... but then again, I heard that track twice on that tour. Oh well. If you're a big fan of the band, this is a nice little cd to add to the collection, but its certainly not essential in any way.

What an interesting concept............2006-07-29
When I first heard this cd 3 years ago, I thought it was a wonderful concept, however since hearing the cd, I didn't feel that some of the tracks were done as well as they could've been.
Especially evident upon listening to Steven Curtis Chapman 'Live Out Loud' Vs. Out Of Eden 'River', they sped up the music to River, but they didn't re-pitch the tune to match the original recording (programs like Adobe Audition can speed the tempo of a song up while keeping the original pitch the same fairly easily). If this track had the music kept at the same pitch while speeding it up, it would've worked well....other tunes that I felt didn't work as well were Relient K 'Pressing On' Vs. Tobymac 'Yours', The Benjamin Gate 'All Over Me' Vs. John Reuben 'Do Not'.
My personal favorites on this cd were Audio Adrenaline 'Get Down' Vs. Steven Curtis Chapman 'Dive' Vs. Grits 'They All Fall Down' (which was a great track to lead the cd off on, however it ended up being my favorite track on the cd), DC Talk 'Colored People' Vs. Newsboys 'Entertaining Angels', and Newsboys 'Shine' Vs. PAX217 'Tonight' (i felt this one worked especially well together).
I'll give a special mention to Grits 'Tennessee Bwoys' Vs. Switchfoot 'You Already Take Me There', while i'm not a huge fan of Grits, this song in particular, this new spin on it gives me a new appreciation of the track. The Carman 'Who's In The House' Vs. Zoegirl 'Even If' smash-up is a neat spin on this old Carman track that I can remember listening to years ago with friends of mine in the car of one of our old youth group leaders.
So, all in all, i liked about half of the cd....but i give it 4 stars because of the effort taken to sync these tunes together....the people that worked on this cd know what they're doing. Three years later, i'm still hoping a second volume would come out, because I would just love to hear more Christian music like this, and since then there have been lots of new recordings that could be mashed up together, and i'm only hoping that the record labels are reading this and are planning more volumes of Smash-Ups.
Smash-ing!.......2004-04-13
I first read about the idea of "mash-ups" a year or so ago in Mojo magazine. Apparently, the concept of computer savy music fans taking the melody from one song and setting it to the backing track of another (completely unrelated) song didn't set well with the original artists when the bootleg versions began turning up on the internet. Nonetheless, it was still great fun, and who hasn't wondered what Glen Campbell would sound like backed by Metallica?
It's somewhat surprising then, that a Christian record label would latch onto the idea and release an "authorized" CD based on this idea. Christian labels aren't exactly known for catching on to trends quickly, if you know what I mean.
Even more surprising is that almost everything here works. The song choices vary from the overly familiar (Newsboys' "Shine" and "Entertaining Angels", DC Talk "Jesus Freak" and "Colored People") to unexpected gems (Grits' "TN Bwoys", John Ruben's "Do Not"), and the actual mash-ups are well thought out.
At first listen, some of the tracks can be quite jarring - the Rebecca St. James -"God"/Earthsuit- "One Time" was startling for me - but the more you hear these tracks, the more you can appreciate the effort which went into putting them together.
The lead track worked the best for me, maybe because it was the only track which mashed-up three songs instead of two. Mixing up Audio Adrenaline's "Get Down", SCC's "Dive", and Grits' "All Fall Down" was inspired.
Even the use of Carman's (ugh!) "Who's In The House" isn't as horrible as it looks on paper when matched with pop queens ZoeGirl's "Even If". Somehow it all works.
I hope this won't be the only time a Christian label tries something like this. There are plenty more great songs out there waiting to mashed-up.
Uplifting.......2003-12-24
This CD is one of the best CDs. The music is great, and it leaves you in high spirits, unlike some CDs. They can leave you feeling dark inside.
Great idea and a ton of fun!.......2003-11-30
Good stuff! I was just Christmas shopping and I'm guilty of being a bit selfish. I saw this CD and picked it up on a whim. It looked like fun. And it is.
I'm not sure if it's what I was expecting, though. When they said they mixed a couple songs together, they did, BUT, they typically take the beat from one and the words from another. Example: River / Live Out Loud has Out of Eden's beat but you never hear them sing. It's just SCC.
All in all, very good. I always have to give kudos to original Christian music. Too much of it is an effort to sound like somebody else. This is fresh and original. It makes me happy. And a sequel would make me even happier.
Smash Ups.......2003-11-15
Smash Ups is an awesome cd! It's got a great variety of songs with a good beat!
