Those who know Jack Johnson only as college radio fave are in for a pleasant surprise here, as are wave-riding aficionados with a taste for eclectic, cooled-out musical vibes. The project Surfer magazine hailed as 2000's Video of the Year was originally a collaboration between surfing champ/then-USC film student Johnson and school colleagues Chris and Dan Malloy. But Johnson also gratifyingly took the opportunity to prove that "surf music" is purely a subjective term; indeed, electric instruments are few and far between here, let alone the traditional buzzsaw licks of such genre stalwarts as Dick Dale and Gary Hoey. Instead, Johnson has stitched together an organically focused, acoustic-centered collection that would seem as welcome on a shady creek bank as a sunny, wave-lapped beach. Johnson offers up an acoustic take of his sophomore album's "Holes to Heaven" and the sprightly instrumentals "Moonshine" and "Cove," while longtime associate G. Love duets on the spare, rootsy "Rainbow." Love and band Special Sauce also contribute the even grittier instrumental "Hobo Blues" and laconic "Honor and Harmony." But its also a collection that ventures as far afield as The Meters' 70's-funky "Liver Splash"., Finley Quaye's spare soul, the folk-raga of Kalyanji/Anadji's "My Guru" and the spacey, haunting "Dark Water and Stars" by Natural Calamity. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Redefining Surf Music - Jack & Friends.......2006-10-29

Jack takes beach music beyond the Beach Boys and Dick Dale and redefines the laid back sound of the surf. Jack contributes to a few track both solo efforts and with G. Love - the great, but simple Rainbow Blues. This album is great and gets better with repeat listings. Buy and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Thicker Than Water.......2006-07-25

A collection of songs from some great musicians. I really liked the title track "Thicker Thank Water" by Todd Hannigan. [...]

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!! Love Jack's music!.......2006-07-25

Jack Johnson is the greatest new artist on the market. This cd is awesome. Matt Costa and G.Love sound good with Jack, love the Rainbow song.

5 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2006-07-08

I had all of Jack Johnson's other albums before I purchased this one. I enjoy this album. It's not all Jack Johnson which gives for a nice mix of songs. I like the songs Jack Johnson does on this album as much as any of his others, not to mention the other songs on the album are pretty good too.

I would reccomend it if you are a Jack Johnson fan or like really chill music. It's a cool album.

First of all let me state that if you're a Hip-Hop fan, especially of West Coast rap, this CD set is a STEAL for the price. Although I don't like all the artists on the CD, I like more than half and that to me equals music WELL WORTH the price. My favorites are: Let It Reign / Gang Bang Sh** / King Of LA / Survival Of The Fittest and the list goes on and on! Great production as well. A definite keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Remember H2O Here........2003-01-12

This is the cd that I like to remember H2O with - its really dark melodic punk/hardcore. Its one of the best cds of the genre as well.

Even though they well ... went against everything they stood for with their first album (and "sold out", went to a major label, changed their genre to the fit the trends, etc.) this album still stands the test of time.

If you're into their newer stuff but haven't checked out any of their earlier work, check this album about and give a listen to the bands that they have tattooed onto themselves while your at it.

5 out of 5 stars H2O IS THE BEST.......2002-08-19

THIS IN MY OPINION IS THE BEST CD NEXT TO GO THAT H2O HAS DONE.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM! H2O AT ITS BEST!!.......2001-10-12

If you are a fan of Punk music, then this CD needs to be in your collection. The first Epitaph release for H2O is definitely their strongest...even though all four of their albums are fantastic... These NYC Hardcore guys keep it positive and put on the best live performances that I've seen. They exude energy and Toby keeps it real by hopping in the crowd on a regular basis. H2O are definitely at the top of the list of all the new school punk bands. I could go on and on about how these guys rock, but you'll just have to experience it for yourselves. Buy this album!! You will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A Dozen Years Later, Still Worth Hearing...........2005-01-29

I concur with the two previous reviewers of "Thicker Than Water"; the Villegas triplets made an excellent first album. I can't remember how I first learned of The Triplets--perhaps I was just browsing CDs in the music store and was attracted to the cover picture of the three pretty Latina singers--but I do remember being struck by their wonderful harmonies and smooth, beautiful voices when I gave the CD a listen. I, too, acknowledge that their lyrics are sometimes a bit sophomoric and awkward, but the song's straight-forward production and The Triplets' sincerity make the fault forgiveable.
I must add, however, that The Triplets didn't disappear after this one album and didn't ignore the growing interest in Hispanic music of the early Nineties, typified by such singers as Gloria Estefan and Selena. Their second album, "Fuerza Del Parentesco", issued in OCT 91, was a Spanish-language remake of "Thicker Than Water". Their voices and harmonies are just as beautiful on "Fuerza..." as on "Thicker...", but their translations sometimes made the Spanish lyrics fit awkwardly to the tunes.
The Triplets' third, and apparently final, album was "Algo Mas Que Amor", which came out in SEP 93. This album is predominately in Spanish with a few English songs at the end of the track list, but the Spanish songs were apparently written in that language; the lyrics fit the music much better than on "Fuerza..." and don't detract from the sisters' awesome singing voices. Although I'm not fluent in Spanish, I really enjoy the marriage of the Spanish lyrics to the Hispanic-tinged pop/rock instrumentals.
If you're going to give The Triplets a listen--and I do recommend it--start with "Thicker Than Water". Then, if you realize you enjoy their light, harmonious music, go for "Algo Mas Que Amor". After a dozen years, the Triplets are still worth hearing.

4 out of 5 stars One of my guilty pleasures of my youth.......2004-08-25

I was perusing my tape (does anyone listen to tapes anymore?) collection from my adolescence when I came across my copy of The Triplets' "...Thicker Than Water". I decided to throw the tape into my portable stereo. I almost forgot how much I liked them. They were kinda like Wilson Phillips but latino and with better voices. Sylvia, Vicky, and Diana definitely had a knack for melodies and harmonies. They had a minor hit with "Light a Candle" back in the early '90s. It was a shame that nothing came out of it because they really did know how to harmonize and their music was catchy as heck. Their music was pretty fell into the pop/rock category. Nothing daring or innovative. It was fun, catchy songs although the ballads swerved into the velveeta territory, especially "Pyramids of Pleasure" (the silliest lyrics I have ever seen at the time) and "Spanish Surrender". Like The Bangles who had a knack for harmonizing and melodies too, The Triplets does a stunning rendition of The Grassroots' "Where Were You When I Needed You". As silly as the group's lyrics were at times, I would have gladly taken them over the over the top cheesiness of Wilson Phillips.

4 out of 5 stars Latina power-harmonies trio had mainstream potential.......2004-03-17

While on one of my usual jaunts to the record store in Las Cruces, I chanced upon a jaunty pop song on an instore play sung by a female group. The song was "You Don't Have To Go Home Tonight" by the Triplets, and its svelte Belinda Carlisle pop and Bangles-like harmonies were what caught me. If Wilson Phillips were more upbeat and rocked more, and were Latina, they'd be Vicky, Sylvia, and Diana Villegas, a.k.a. the Triplets. While studio musicians back them up, their powerful harmonies are a wall of sound by themselves. It's as if they are the rock-pop version of the Pointer Sisters, with guitars and drums instead of bass and brass as accompaniment, the lead off track "Dancing In The Shadows" an example of that.

"Light A Candle" is the story of an emigrant's going to America with a pocket of dreams and the prayers the family does to make sure he stays safe. However, it's not peaches, and the poor guy's glad his girl's not with him: "living in a tenement, and he's sleeping on the floor, the loneliness that's with him rips him to the core."

The vocals of the ballad "So Hard" at times has a Linda Ronstadt-ish twang. "The Sunrise" could well be a Wilson Phillips tune due to its pop flavouring. This song was co-written by Martin Page. The power vocals and instrumentation are pretty powerful here. Another singleworthy song is "If I Could Only Make You Love Me" which is a perfect demo of their style, and if their overpowering vocals were what turned off radio, the vocals here are moderate.

"Blood is Thicker Than Water" is a nice guitar and power drums ballad about the connections between siblings and the moral support that'll be there despite the distance. They also explore interethnic boundaries in the white man/Spanish girl encounter in "Spanish Surrender." They're definitely proud of their ethnicity, as they aver that Latinas are girls that will stay in the blood forever, and would take issue with the line "I wish they all could be California girls."

OK, only last year was I aware that the Bangles covered "Where Were You When I Needed You." Recently, while glancing through the track listing on the Triplets, song #9 caught my eye. I hastily opened the booklet and sure enough, written by P. Sloan of the Grass Roots. Having also heard the original, I had to hear how the Villegas sisters did it. Not a bad rendition; but the power chorus harmonies are in fourth gear as usual.

The album closes with the quiet guitar and a slow samba-like beat of the bedroom romance of "Pyramids Of Pleasure." The Triplets went on to do Spanish albums later, but this album was a missed opportunity. Had this gone over big, they would've preceded Shakira, Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Thalia, and Enrique Iglesias as the vanguard of a possible Latina invasion, had the battleplans been made.

1990/1 seems to be the year for forgotten artists. There was Francesca Beghe, Tag, Eye & I, and now The Triplets, who could've cut into the biz with Wilson Phillips breaking in. After all, another girl trio with rock/pop sensibilities, and with more powerful vocals? However, I would've included Spanish versions of the better songs to guarantee the Hispanic market. Gee, what're you doing now, Triplets?

Twin Gambino, Ty Knitty, and GOD Pt. 3 are back after 2 years to bring another solid street CD from QueensBridge. Not as good as their classic debut album but still a good 4 star album. Packed with 16 songs, there is 1 classic, 5 ok songs, 1 I skip (it's not an Infamous Mobb song anyway) and the rest are good. 13 of the 14 songs with Infamous Mobb have all the members on it and GOD pt. 3 has a solo. Production is pretty good, but not near as good as their debut. Masberg, Rick Rude, and Sebb all do 3 songs, ALCHemist, Lee Major, Steve Sola, Grim Team, Nucleus, Ax the Bull, A Dog all do 1 song. Guests are on 4 songs rapping and a few others on the hook. A nice album for QB fans to have or fans of real street rap not the sweet candy-coated crap all over the radio and music tv stations!

Nowadays all you hear is this 50 cent garbage and G - uNOT.When you have little girls listening to em, u sure as hell know that "gangsta" rap has changed and there is barley any1 real out there besides a few.It is a shame that Mobb Deep has fallen to the G-unot label, although i still support them because all they're prob trying to do is make that heavy paper. This cd is a perfect example of that real true rap comin striaght out of
grimey Queens which is known for their extraordinary rappers such as Nas , Mobb Deep , Kool G Rap , Infamous Mobb , etc.. This CD is a must have, so just cop it. Your just really dupid if you dont. The track "Black Hand ft. Flame" is what grabbed my attention to this CD.Respect to G.O.D.Father Pt. 3, Ty Nitty & Twin Gambino along with the legends Prodigy and Havoc.Keep makin them crazy hits.If you want another excellent cd go cop The Infamous by Mobb Deep, alriaght thats all i gotta say Im out, Im swayze.

5 out of 5 stars IM3.......2005-04-07

Straight Outta Queens comes Infamous Mobb, which consist of G.O.D.Father Pt. 3, Ty Nitty & Twin Gambino. They are connected with mobb deep, and there music is without doubt influenced by new york, and other new york rappers, but they still manage to create an album, that's is different, but still worth listening to.. Almost every song on this cd is perfect (exept 2 or 3), which i dont see often... G.O.D.Father's great lyrics, Ty Nitty's verses & Twin Gambino's rough & grimmy voice is a great mix. It's also great that they dont have to many guest's on the cd, they showed that they can do it by themself..

The dvd is also a very good feature. It shows almost every thing in hip-hop, and the dvd also make it all feel more real. Dont expect neaked chicks, big bentleys or billion dollar cribs, it's real footy from the studios, the queens projects etc... the music videoes, and the freestyles is also a big plus in the dvd. Actually, i you need to read this, if you like real hip-hop that has more to say then 50 cent, then you should buy this one right now, its definitely worth it...

4 out of 5 stars Greatest QB Release Of 2004.......2005-01-24

Infamous Mobb's second album "Blood Thicker Than Water, Vol 1" brings more of the hungry street ish we've come to know on Special Edition. The album starts out hot with the blazing tracks; "Greenbacks" and "Empty Out (Reload)". The Mobb continues to bring raw street hop throughout the CD although on some tracks the production comes up short or the hook doesn't fit their style entirely well. The Bonus DVD includes interviews with the members who unravel some of their memorable experiences & memories growing up in the hood. For years Mobb Deep were uncontestedly the illest crew in QB but 2004 will forever be remembered as the year they got overshadowed by the Infamous Mobb.

This is as good a blues CD in this genre as you can buy. Mike Henderson writes great songs. They would be classics on anyone elses CD. There is not one bad track on this CD. The sound is
'GRUNGE BLUES'. A slightly dirty sound like the STONES suits perfectly as a vehicle for MIKE's superb guitar playing ( he plays great slide as well ) throughout the CD. The vocals are
excellent as well and the lyrics are better than most other offerings in this genre. All 3 MIKE HENDERSON CD's are worth buying and are sure to get your next party hopping.

My title says it all-Buy this if you can find it! Mike Henderson is the real deal, not some Trashville wanna be. There are very few more talented folks out there than Mike. If you are planning a trip to Nashville, skip the Honky Tonks one night and get down to the Bluebird Cafe (on Mondays) when Mike is playing, it will be the highlight of your trip. As previous reviewers have said, First Blood is very good. For a slight change of pace check out Edge Of Night. Just a bit more country without being full on Grand Ol' Opry!
Enjoy and spread the word.

The original songs are terrific, they make the covers sound like their own. In fact, buy "First Blood", too. Both are fantastic. I'd love to see these guys in person.

5 out of 5 stars Mike Henderson IS the blues.......1999-12-11

This CD is so great. Mike Henderson takes you with him on a rollercoaster of bluesy ups & downs. You'll be swayin' & boppin" with one of the best. This is a must buy! My fav on this Cd is "I need me a car".

Armed with technique to spare but never exhibitionistic, guitarist Mike Henderson leads his Bluebloods through a mix of originals and covers on their second album. "Tears Like a River" is a spellbinding performance where Henderson displays great sensitivity to, and natural fluency with, the musical exclamations of drummer John Gardner, string bassist Glenn Worf (cowriter of the tune with Henderson), and pianist John Jarvis (the former Rod Stewart hired gun replacing Reese Wynans in the Bluebloods). Playing the harmonica, another instrument he controls with ease, Henderson brings a similar kind of knife-edge tension to "All My Money's Gone" and "Slow Your Motor Down," two more outstanding Henderson-Worf compositions. It's only a matter of time, however long getting the word out on Thicker Than Water and undertaking a coast-to-coast tour takes, before blues America realizes Mike Henderson & the Bluebloods are one of the sharpest bands anywhere. --Frank-John Hadley

5 out of 5 stars WOW THESE GUYS ARE BRILLIANT.......2003-04-23

As long as musos like Mike Henderson @ the Bluebloods take up the Blues the future is assured. Whenever you think that you've heard it all ( I did ) along comes something like this.
Rocking Blues at it's best. A somewhat dirty sound accentuates the care free style in which these virtuosos deliver their highly original and incredibly powerfull take on the Blues. Mike Hendersons guitar playing is powerfull but can be ever so emotive when called for. Great songs that would be standouts on almost anyone elses CD. This will certainly get the party started. I wish they would come to Australia as I am dying to see them live.

    5 out of 5 stars Nasty!.......1999-08-03

The back-alley production values of this disk accentuate the dirty, gritty, irresistibly low-down, gut-bucket blues gushing out of this recording like water from a fire hose. This isn't just an homage to tradition, however; the band takes a lot of chances here, stretching the blues idiom to the breaking point and putting a unique stamp on it. Mike's vocals have never been better, and he's finally been persuaded to get that harmonica out of the trunk (I've never heard better). Meanwhile his bass-strung guitar keeps growling out some of the meanest sounds around. Mike is secure enough to keep coming up with keyboard virtuosi who threaten to walk away with the show, but then again, I bet there's a truckload of top Nashville musicians who'd jump at the chance to play with the Bluebloods. I'll echo the plea of my Aussie mate here: Mike, please get this band to St. Louis ASAP!

5 out of 5 stars This band is so good, its scary..........1999-05-10

I thought they couldn't do any better than "First Blood". I was wrong.

Without a doubt, the most jumpin' CD of any genre I've heard for too long a time. Great combination of big old Silvertone slide geetar sounds (Mike tunes down to C!) mixed with standup bass, acoustic piano and a rockin' drummer. Oh yeah, and the wicked Little Walter inspired harp is played by Mike as well...

These guys are the best - when I first heard the remake of "Wouldn't lay my guitar down" (which appeared on Mike's CD "Edge of Night") I had to pull the truck over to crank the volume and avoid the speeding ticket.

Hey, I'm gushing. Enough. Buy it.

(And Mike, get your band out to Sydney Australia ASAP!)
