Project English doesn't contain an instantly recognizable chartbuster like "Back That Azz Up" or "Ha" from the 400 Degreez album, but that's not even the issue here. Like Master P and the No Limit camp before him, Juvenile and his Cash Money clique's fame clock will continue to run at 14:57 (and counting) until he diversifies his sound and subject matter. The reggae-tinged "Sunshine" repositions Juvenile and his crew as rap innovators, introducing listeners to some new slum slanguage ("sunshining" is a "bling, bling"-like slang term for jewelry). "Mamma Got Ass" is another notable yet unintentionally comedic tune where Juvenile explains how genetics influence the big bums he fancies. "Set It Off" and "Get Your Hustle On," meanwhile, contain the in-your-face misogyny and materialism that bog down portions of the release. On "My Life," Juvenile's fictional storytelling shines through as he crafts an action-filled tale of rising up from rags to bitches, er...riches. Ultimately, the lack of outside producers holds back Project English. Cash Money Records' in-house knob-twiddler Mannie Fresh's creative wellspring is running dry; the drum programming and keyboard stylings in the second half of the album start to sound way too familiar. In the end, "White Girl" (a metaphor for crack cocaine) is the kind of electrofunk with smart rhymes that will remind the Cash Money constituency why they should continue to buy Juvenile's albums. --Dalton Higgins

Album Description

Clarion is proud to showcase another great American choir, The Choral Project, in a program featuring the music of Eric Whitacre. Included are the ever-popular "Cloudburst" and the "Five Hebrew Love Songs" performed with String Quartet. Founded in 1996 by Artistic Director Daniel Hughes, The Choral Project has performed throughout Northern California in concert performances, interfaith services, and choral festivals, including a performance at the National Cathedral in Washington DC, as part of the California State Day Celebration Service. In June of 2001, The Choral Project received rave reviews and standing ovations at concert performances during their first international tour to Mexico and Costa Rica, which included highly acclaimed performances on Mexican National Radio, and a joint concert with the Café Chorale in Costa Rica. They have performed world premieres of compositions by numerous composers including Eric Whitacre.

Truly dissapointed with this one.

Of course, BYU's is better than this; the sopranos sound like they have an average age of 60.

The soprano section lives in some wierd dichotomy. During the "Agnus Dei" you get a particularly bad B-52 like vibrato, then during the 7/8 section of "5 Hebrew Songs" they sound like a mediocre State School College Choir with a breathy unsupported sound. Both instances weren't out of tune. They just lacked a firm foundation.

When the soloists in "Tonight Eternity Alone" come in with shocking vibrato and lack of professional musicality, I actually skipped ahead.

If you are looking for a great cd other than BYU's. Try the CD entitled "Cloudburst", sung by Polyphony, conducted by Stephen Layton on Hyperion Records. It will blow you away. Save your money on this one, unless you would like to use this CD to compare the differences between it and either BYU or Polyphony.

Paying a premium fee for this CD, I expected something a bit better than an average grade semi-professional choir.

Daniel, find some new sopranos if you want to continue to sell CD's for $17 a pop.

I don't know what these people are talking about. I've heard the BYU cd and it leaves me cold. The tone is so pure and thin that it has no life to it. The Choral Project breathes life into these pieces by Eric Whitacre. Another winner is Frank Ticheli's "There Will Be Rest". Simply stunning. A fabulous CD!

Decent, but too much vibrato.......2006-02-03

I am a huge Eric Whitacre fan, so I am always excited about his recordings. So far the best recording of his Choral works is the BYU singers, which is far superior to this recording. My biggest complaint is that nearly every piece from Water and Light is filled with vibrato. I have read some internet postings by Mr. Whitacre himself and he has said that his pieces are best sung without vibrato because the harmonies are designed to fit tightly together. All the vibrato makes the pieces not sound completely in tune (I'm am not saying that these performers are not capable of singing in tune, just that the vibrato makes the harmonies not quite as strong)

As the previous reviewer, I'm a huge Eric Whitacre fan. If you're looking for a recording of his Five Hebrew Love Songs (which are stunningly beautiful), may I recommend "Beautiful River" by BYU Concert Choir (on Tantara Records). In comparing the two side by side...well there is no comparison.

Not BYU, but worth adding to your collection.......2006-01-17

Eric Whitacre has taken the contemporary choral music world by storm. Since the release of his collected a cappella works CD (recorded by BYU Singers/Ron Staheli), choral music fans cannot get enough of his music.

Being such a fan, I bought this CD on a whim. I was excited for the opportunity to hear recordings of several pieces not included on the BYU recording (Little Birds, She Weeps Over Rahoon, Five Hebrew Love Songs).

Whitacre's music is as aurally stunning as it is difficult to sing, and the Choral Project does an adequate job of re-interpreting these pieces. If you've gotten use to the excellent quality of the BYU recording, you may be disappointed by this album--the balance and blend of this choir leaves something to be desired at times (not to mention the overly-offensive vibrato from several of the sopranos).

Perhaps the best track on the album is the Ticheli (mostly known for his band/wind ensemble compositions) "There Will Be Rest". If you aren't familiar with this piece, it's worth buying the album just to hear this one...

All-in-all, it's worth buying this album as long as you don't set your expectations too high.

Juve's Worst CD.......2006-02-28

I am a huge fan of Juvenile, not to mention the Hot Boys. But this cd was just a disgrace. There are only 2 songs that are good on this cd and I can't even name them off the top of my head right now. The guy who said this cd is better than 400 degreez must not understand real dirty south rap. 400 degreez is not just the best cd juvenile made, it's one of the best rap albums ever made. So, if you're like me and keep every cash money cd in your collection, buy this cd...but don't expect to hear a chart topping cd.

Project English=flopped.......2004-07-07

After listening to 400 Degreez, I expected "project English" to have the same vibe it brought on. This album really did not have anything that you can really get into a groove to. "Set it off" was a very weak single that is somewhat like an anthem but the Juvi didn't deliver like he usually does in that song. "From Mama/Mama Got Ass" was the second single and that song didn't really do much for the album either, however it was a decent song with decent delivery. Juvenile really didn't show the type of lyrical skill or delivery he showed on previous albums. The singing on his hooks/choruses really didn't cut it. Also, most of the album, you hear the other Ca$h Money artists, not Juvenile. On "Be Gone", it says Juvenile feat. Big Tymers, however Juvenile didn't rap a single verse AT ALL, it was all Big Tymers and surprisingly they delivered quite well. "4 Minutes", you hear 1 verse by Juvenile, rest are by Hot Boy$ and they do a better job than Juvenile. On most of the songs, guests out-shine Juvenile himself. "My Life" was probably the only good song Juvi delivered well, with TQ singing a good hook. "Sunshine" was quite worth mentioning because that it is a new style that we haven't heard from Ca$h Money before, Juvenile uses his hoarsy voice and talk with Jamaican accent, this reggae style was fresh but Juvi wasn't very good at it because that it neither Big Tymers or Juvi brought the vibe that reggae artists bring. "IN the Nolia" was one of the songs you had to skip, theres "In the Nolia" with really bad singing after every line. Lil Wayne outshined Juvenile on "White Chicks" and kept the song alive. "Set IT Off Remix" was a nice remix of the song Set It Off, Juvenile appeared only on 1 verse, rest are delivered by Hot Boy$ and Baby, they all did pretty well. Songs like "Get Your Hustle On" brings no energy,and "HB Headbusta" has too much singing. Manny Fresh's production did have his signature sound, most of the beats were good except for "Get Your Hustle ON". However, overall Project English didn't bring what I was looking for in a Juvenile album, he didn't appear on too many songs, one good things is that there are no poinntless skits, that was a good thing. But overall, this sounded to somewhat like a compilation and desperately needed a "HOT" single like something that will bring vibe: exp Back Dat Ass Up.

Worst Juve album.......2004-03-29

Juvenile is one of the top mcs in the south, and despite his old crews lack of thought provoking subject matters, Juve has always been able to offer some insightful commentary into the ghetto conditions rapped by his CMB breathens. However, on this record, not only is there a lack of signiture Juve style, he also seems distracted. Indeed, as we would later learn, admist the recording of this album, Juve found out that he was being shortchanged by the William brothers (Baby and Slim, CEO of Cash Money), and that is evident throughout this album. He's overly anxious in the songs, repeating the hooks over and over again with very few verses in between. It seemed like he just wanted to get it over with so he could be done with his contract. This led to the poor delivery. The only thing that saves this album from receiving 1 star is the hot beats of Mannie Fresh. Regardless of the MC's talent, Fresh's beats make them shine like the jewels they rock, and unfortunatley in this case, it was necessary.

I don't really agree with some of these reviews, I think Project English is a really good CD. In my opinion it's even better than 400 Degrees. It's too bad that this was his last effort with Cash Money. My favorite song on here is "Set It Off". Other good songs on this CD were "Mamma Got A**", "HB Headbusta", "Get Your Husle On", and "In The Nolia". If you're a Cash Money fan and you like the hot beats produced by Mannie Fresh you must buy this album, it's definately the best Cash Money solo record ever. If you don't like Cash Money and you're into the Eminem type lyrics then you probably won't like this CD. I give this 5 stars.

Juvenile - "Project English".......2003-06-15

Juvenile puts out a good beat on his new CD, "Project English". Although on some songs you find yourself hearing the same familiar beat and lyrics, songs such as "White Girl" and "Mamma Got [A**]" mix it up making this an enjoyable CD worth buying. The best song on the album, "Set It Off" along with "Set It Off (Remix Radio)", make this CD above average. I find myself listening to the whole CD all the way through. Go out and get this one.

Cash Money has done it again--and they will only continue........2001-09-13

Cash Money's longevity is impressive, they continue to roll on without the least degree of staleness. They are original, new, and innovative. This is a great cd. Mannie still rips the tracks with his brilliant, creative, musical talents (they are vast--more than most producers). He continues to be pretty amazing and he just won't stop. Good for you Mannie! Despite opposing opinions, I do NOT believe that Mannie's well spring of beats, and rythms is "running dry," and "sounding all too familiar." I think that Mannie just gets better and better. Juvi and his crew/guests do a great job too, of course. TQ sings great on "My Life," and the tune is bumpin (like most of the songs on the cd). Great work. Cash Money has done it again. CMB thank-you for putting out a clean/edited version. I appreciate it. The cd is excellent!
