Editorial Reviews

DIY HIP HOP, November 10, 2001
“I really like this LP…Illios is a practiced and rehearsed MC, who has a healthy sense of the absurd."

Product Description
LOST LUCK / LUST AND THE LAST LIFE CYCLE is the debut album from emcee/producer ILLIOS. Many people in underground hip-hop circles already consider the album a revolutionary recording. It is destined, perhaps, to change the face of hip-hop forever, if not create a very strong following for Illios. Throughout the length of the record, the listener is seduced with a tantalizing blend of tales; sex, violence, and paranoid self-reflection are only the beginning. It is the combination of Illios’ incredibly zany lyrics and machinegun wordplay (backed by freaked beats and enough bass to destroy even the toughest transducer) that makes LOST LUCK a future classic. Hear it for yourself.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars boom bap for 2002.......2002-04-23

This is a perfect example of what is to come for hip-hop music. With other groups like clouddead, aesop, and anticon doing similar things, this new sound will start to pull further and further away from the traditional hip-hop that we all know and are very sick of. Illios sounds like has some problems with the way hip-hop music is and is trying to change things. Taunting hip-hop traditionalists with his songs about very obscure subject matters and interludes that sort of sneak up in between the songs. This album is not typical at all. Also, who is DJ Ethos and where did this guy come from?! His scratching is way above the average "end of the song" DJ, and actually adds much to the songs he is on by sounding more creative than the dj who just wants to show skill. Watch out for these two. While the album definitley sounds like their first, I would keep my eyes open for more to come.

5 out of 5 stars Scary, beautiful.......2002-03-08

Illios' paranoid rhymes seem as though they've been finely toasted with microwaves. I got the feeling that God accidentally got some bad acid and decided to tell us how it REALLY is. A startling work of art.

5 out of 5 stars finally something creative.......2001-11-10

i have never heard anything like this. The beats are not your typical, boring hip-hop beats. The music goes with the mood of the song and Illios's rhyme style, which gives the album a certain level of intelligence that most hip-hop lacks these days.
It sounds like a solid piece of music, not just a compliation of random songs.
Im glad to hear someone rhyming about UFOs and picking plumbs off of tree-tops, rather than how nice their crew is or how "real" they think they are.
If you want to hear the return of good hip-hop, BUY THIS ALBUM!

5 out of 5 stars Strange Luck?.......2001-09-02

Like reading the tomes of Nostradamus or Ted Kaczynski's manifesto, listening to Illios's Debut album Lost Luck/Lust and the Last Life Cycle is delightfully masochistic. With occasional moments of calming insight, the album attacks you with a sort of technological taro card reading. Frightened of what you might be told but unable to help yourself, you hear stories of alien abductions, mad scientists, and murderous psychotics. And like the last days of the apocalypse nothing is sacred and nothing is spared. More than abstract, Illios's hip hop is downright bizarre. But when its all said and done, and the last beat has been detonated, you can almost hear Illios chuckling, "Come on man. You think I really believe that stuff?" But you're still not sure.

His lyrics are some of the sharpest and most interesting I've ever heard. And the quirky, space age beats compliment his stories perfectly. This is a gifted artist that you have to hear to believe.
