Husky vocalist L.V. first entered the ears of the world alongside his South Central homeboy Coolio on the rapper's monster 1995 single "Gangsta's Paradise." With that song, interpolated from an old Stevie Wonder gem and layered with L.V.'s preacher-man chorus and buttery refrain, the pair was onto something good--reworkings of classic soul and R&B into radio-friendly hip-hop--which Coolio exploited further on his album. This formula gets another workout on the first half of L.V.'s debut solo shot, I Am L.V. The singer turns replayed bits of songs from the O'Jays, Isaac Hayes, and Al Hudson into modern soul music with a retro feel and a smooth West Coast hip-hop heart. With wah-wah and talkbox effects, flute and horn work, and soaring vocals, songs like "Fire From the Gun," "Gangsta's Boogie," and "Throw Your Hands Up" owe more to classics by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, and Parliament than to any recent R&B. And with his rapless version of "Gangsta's Paradise" and the praise-the-lording of "The 'G' Within," L.V. offers a conscious--even gospel--take on gangsta music. I Am L.V. takes a nosedive halfway through and changes into an entirely different, far less worthwhile record. The last six of the album's fourteen songs are original L.V. love ballads, and left without a blueprint from which to interpolate, the music degenerates into the same, vapid R&B pop that clutters so much of the urban airwaves. This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Essential Performances from a Great & Beloved Singer.......2004-01-09

For those of us who grew up on Janet Baker's recordings (and were lucky enough to hear her "live" as well), the sound of her voice and her singular artstic personality - British restraint coupled with fierce emotional and spiritual commitment - are indelibly imprinted in our minds and hearts. The closest current equivalent is Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, another superb artist who has charted her own course, and not surprisingly there is some overlap of repertoire, in the music of J.S. Bach, of course, but also Berlioz's Didon and Beatrice, Handel's Ariodante and Britten's Phaedra (composed for Baker).
This wonderful compilation is complementary to EMI's 2-CD "The Very Best of Janet Baker" -- no overlap of repertoire whatsoever. Unlike that set, which focused on concert repertoire (with orchestra or piano) there's a generous sampling here of Baker's operatic roles including Handel, Mozart, Purcell, Rameau, Gluck, and Britten. Also welcome is "Phaedra," one of Britten's strongest late works. And it's good to have the Berlioz: "Cleopatre" and "Herminie" complete, the big aria from "Beatrice et Benedict." (Why EMI included nothing from her recording of the last 2 scenes of "Les Troyens" is unfathomable.) The wide time-span allows us to hear Baker's voice in all its youthful, "sappy" warmth, as well as in its artistic maturity (though truth to tell she was pretty much a complete artist from the start). There are a few signs of wear in later items, nothing serious, in fact rather less than I remembered. I could have done with fewer of the "Arie Amorose" in favor of more cuts from her Gluck LP, which I believe has never been issued complete on CD, but that's just personal preference. The focus here is entirely on orchestrally accompanied works (or, in the case of the marvelous early disc of Ravel, Chausson & Delage songs, with chamber ensemble) so for Baker the supreme interpreter of English, German and French song you'll need to go elsewhere (the EMI has a fair sampling, especially of her Schubert). But everything here is indispensible.

Fulfilling Overview of the Baroque Era in Music and Words.......2005-05-09

Yet another great bargain-priced package from Naxos effectively provides an overview of the rich Baroque period with two discs containing more than 2 ½ hours of music and a comprehensive, 140-page primer booklet. Compiled by music historian Clive Unger-Hamilton, the collection is well-chosen to represent the many different facets of the era without recycling the more obvious candidates like Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons". The quality of the playing and singing is top-notch throughout, and the program contains quite a smorgasbord of pieces from dramatic opera arias to harpsichord pieces (sometimes played on authentic instruments, other times on modern grands) to full-blown choruses. Standout tracks include Allegri's "Miserere mei" with an ethereal boy treble soloist; two arias sung by soprano Ingrid Kertesi, in particular, Almirena's lament, "Lascia ch'io pianga" from Handel's "Rinaldo"; and a lovely "When I am laid in earth" from Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas" performed by soprano Kym Amps. The choral pieces can be astounding from Bach's "St Matthew Passion (BWV 244)" performed by the large Hungarian Festival Chorus and full symphony orchestra to the eight voices that wrap themselves around "For unto us a child is born" from Handel's "Messiah".

The booklet itself provides great value as you listen to the selections. There is a well written 85-page essay by Unger-Hamilton, who manages to encapsulate an enormous amount of information about this period which leaves a novice like me with a more solid basis of understanding the music of the Baroque era. In fact, what is quite valuable is that Unger-Hamilton provides a specific historical reference for each piece on the recording in his essay. There is also a very helpful glossary and an intriguing timeline which covers musical milestones relative to similar milestones in history, arts and architecture and literature. Moreover, there is an alphabetical list of the key Baroque composers and an accompanying map of Europe with important music centers and the composers associated with these cities. The thoughtful presentation of this package really makes the $8.98 price tag one of the great bargains here.

An Excellent Introduction to the Music of the Baroque Era.......2005-04-04

This is one of a series of the 'Discover ...' 2 CD sets -- at super-budget price -- from Naxos that makes use of complete movements of music from the era in question. It is accompanied by an excellent booklet - a thick one! - with an explanatory essay that gives background on the music as well as blow-by-blow descriptions of the music being presented. All the selections (from such composers as Monteverdi, Handel, Bach, Scarlatti, Schütz, Purcell, Corelli, Pachelbel, Charpentier, et al.) are from Naxos's extensive library of recorded music and as far as I can tell all the performances are top-notch.

In addition there is a Timeline of the Baroque Era that includes material about the music, history, art, architecture and literature of the times. There is a map of Europe that shows where various composers lived and worked. There is a list of composers (more than just those whose music provides the audio examples) with their dates and locations. There is a glossary of common musical terms. There is also an extensive list of music suggested for further listening. I can easily imagine this set being the springboard for a newcomer to baroque music to begin a lifetime of enjoyment of these and similar works.

The presentation is thoughtfully done and the whole thing is in a slipcase that will preserve the CDs as well as the booklet for years to come.

Perfect for "drop the needle" style tests.......2006-11-19

If you want to hear full recordings of arias, then this disc is not for you. It plays only tidbits of 99 arias. Contrary to the title, this is definitely not the only opera disc you'll ever need. You shouldn't take it seriously. This disc has next to no value for an opera neophyte. But for opera fanatics, there has never been a better test of your knowledge of operatic repertoire and singers. It's a great challenge for opera buffs. Sit down with your opera loving friends for an hour, play this disc, and try to be the first to identify the singer, composer, opera, and piece. If you're a music professor, this disc would make for an awesome pop quiz. Find out how well your students really know their opera repertoire.

A CD with Attention Deficit Disorder.......2006-10-02

I don't know anyone who would enjoy this CD. It will drive opera fans nuts with a hundred exerpts that run about 30 seconds each, then fade out without the singers even finishing a single verse. It's more like an index of arias, or a volume of teasers that hucksters might use to sell opera CDs.

I never realized how much Bernstein's "Glitter and be gay" sounded like Delibes' "Bell Song" until I heard 35 seconds of one, followed 23 seconds of the other.

Maybe the TV show 'Jeopardy' could use this CD. 'What is "Hush little baby don't you..."??'

What a waste of beautiful voices and great music. 38 seconds of Enrico Caruso, followed by 31 seconds of Jussi Bjoerling, followed by 38 seconds of Dawn Upshaw.

My copy is going to go sailing into the wastebasket as soon as I finish this review.

I should only blame myself for not checking out more reviews... this is a CD filled with short, little snippets of great operas songs... and I mean SHORT, LITTLE snippets of 30 seconds or so, each. Don't buy this CD... it is a complete rip off... and that is saying ALOT since it is only $4.00... Again, my fault for not reading the reviews but I trusted that something called a "Music CD" would actually have complete songs... What else does this company offer? A "Music CD" that only has the intros or applause tracks to great songs...?

Move on to something else... Amazon has a great selection... just not this one.

Husky vocalist L.V. first entered the ears of the world alongside his South Central homeboy Coolio on the rapper's monster 1995 single "Gangsta's Paradise." With that song, interpolated from an old Stevie Wonder gem and layered with L.V.'s preacher-man chorus and buttery refrain, the pair was onto something good--reworkings of classic soul and R&B into radio-friendly hip-hop--which Coolio exploited further on his album. This formula gets another workout on the first half of L.V.'s debut solo shot, I Am L.V. The singer turns replayed bits of songs from the O'Jays, Isaac Hayes, and Al Hudson into modern soul music with a retro feel and a smooth West Coast hip-hop heart. With wah-wah and talkbox effects, flute and horn work, and soaring vocals, songs like "Fire From the Gun," "Gangsta's Boogie," and "Throw Your Hands Up" owe more to classics by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, and Parliament than to any recent R&B. And with his rapless version of "Gangsta's Paradise" and the praise-the-lording of "The 'G' Within," L.V. offers a conscious--even gospel--take on gangsta music. I Am L.V. takes a nosedive halfway through and changes into an entirely different, far less worthwhile record. The last six of the album's fourteen songs are original L.V. love ballads, and left without a blueprint from which to interpolate, the music degenerates into the same, vapid R&B pop that clutters so much of the urban airwaves. L.V. is what the music industry needs right now........2004-09-02

This brother was so cool with his gospel roots. From start to finish is one of the best CD's I've heard from a male soloist since the new jack swing era. L.V. should have gotten his props but did not as a lot of west coast talent but "Throw Your Hands Up" is a gem and "The 'G' Within" is a great song letting everyone know to give thanks to God each everyday for a chance to live and succeed. My favorite is "Hey Love", this song is a mellow groove with nice g-funk sound. Some of the other highlights of the album is "Gangster's Boogie"(Prodeje's Version), "Slow Down", "I'am L.V.", and "The Wrong Come Up". So please don't sleep on this CD, order it now.

Nate Doggs Unheard of Cousin?.......2002-01-20

If you're a fan of g-funk or nate dogg's style, LV is definetely someone to check out. He has cool groovy g-funk flavored beats and stories to tell. He's actually the vocalist from the rap group south central cartel, but sadly enough is only famous for the jam Gangster's Paradise with Coolio. I grew up on the same block with this guy and will vouch he's a true G. Regardless, this is an album you want to listen to while just chillin and having a phat one. Don't let the lack of marketing bypass the true talent in here.

The Music of Existence.......2006-01-15

The recent release of Giya Kancheli's music on the ECM New Series label (In l'istesso tempo), featuring Gidon Kremer, has been keeping me spellbound of late. This is not the kind of music that you would listen to on your way to work, however. It is for after hours, when you have finished with the day's demands and are able to relax quietly with a glass of wine and no outside disturbances. You will turn the lights down low (or even shut them off entirely) when listening to such music, as the entire experience is meant for the sense of hearing.

Kancheli's music is idiosyncratic. If I had to compare him to any other modern-day composer it might be Arvo Pärt in that both composers possess a minimalist approach. But they differ beyond this initial resemblance. Pärt's music possesses a very spiritual outlook on life, whereas Kancheli's is a more darkly existentialist view. In trying to come to terms with Kancheli's style and approach, Wolfgang Rathert's album notes are most enlightening.

Rathert finds the essence of the so-called new music which characterized the Second Viennese School was less an emancipation of dissonance and more an absolute claim to subjectivity and expressiveness. He also characterizes the "autonomy of sound" as the primary characteristic of the new music. Though the advent of the First World War brought a hiatus in the development of this new musical language, "it fundamentally changed the idea of what music was."

According to Rathert, "the genesis of new music raised fundamental questions" which every serious composer since that time has been forced to address. So the "end of the new music cannot be proclaimed, though there is no doubt an ongoing productive crisis." One the results of this great sea-change in music has been that composers must actively take a position with respect to the new political and social realties of the modern world. Even those composers who take the solipsistic head-in-the-sand approach are in effect making a statement. There is no way for a composer to avoid doing this.

There is now a blurring of schools and artistic norms. It is difficult to pin a composer down in terms of any one style or region. Rathert characterizes Kancheli's music as "an archaic sort of modernity whose archaisms have an avant-garde feel." Even so, his music "eludes characterization." I suppose you might say it is shaped by a world-weary attitude, the reactions of a sensitive soul to the bloodshed and conflicts of the "civilized" world. As Kancheli writes, "I write fundamentally for myself, without harboring any illusions that beauty will save the world."

Kancheli views the disappearance of the "religion of tonality" (which bespoke an inherent meaning and dignity to life) as "the sign of a terrible loss", something to be mourned but that is never to be regained. According to Rathert, Kancheli "confronts this loss, not with the complex means of the avant-garde, but with a language of very simple means and gestures, which keeps the memory alive while embodying protest." This protest is exhibited partly by his "refusal to use fast tempi". Thus slow tempi dominate all three works on this album, as evidenced by the title of the Piano Quartet "in l'istesso tempo".

Rathert summarizes: "The overall impression of Kancheli's music is one of philosophical distance and almost Far Eastern calm. Its 'things as they are' stance ... leaves listeners with no choice but to continually address their own inner thoughts." And this "dissenting stance" seems to adhere in all of Kancheli's works: a first encounter with his music may even strike one as being somewhat arrogant and uppity. One does come away with the occasional feeling that he is in his music turning the tables on the listener, forcing the listener to find the meaning of the music within his/her own subjective world, as "vestiges of the unsaid may contain the promise that potentially resides in every new tone, as if it were the first one that had ever sounded. "

Surprise: excellent collection.......2004-10-21

There are so many Dusty Springfield compilations out there that it's difficult to pick out just one as a summation of her career and artistry, but this budget-line collection is surprisingly enjoyable and at 18 tracks, is quite generous.

The collection features big hits ("Stay Awhile", "Son of A Preacher Man") with lesser known songs like "Spooky" and her cover of "Take a Little Piece of My Heart" which is actually quite good. The album also includes some of Dusty's best songs in my opinion, including her sensitive reading of "This Girl's In Love With You" and the enduring classic, "Breakfast In Bed". In fact, there are a number of tracks from 'Dusty in Memphis' although Dusty's biggest hits, "The Look of Love", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" and "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" are not here. The sequencing is fine, ending with the title track, which was covered by Swing Out Sister in the '90s, although Dusty's version still sounds fresh.
