good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Another decent Sweat CD.......2006-12-29

After scoring massive success with his first two albums, Make It Last Forever and I'll Give All My Love to You, Keith Sweat's third album, Keep It Comin', signaled something of a creative and commercial slump for the new jack pioneer, which continued through 1994's Get Up on It. However, Get Up on It is not a bad album by any means. In fact, the set is classic Keith Sweat, filled to the brim with the pleading ballads that made this Harlem crooner so popular. Sweat began to utilize female background vocals, courtesy of Kut Klose, to full effect on this album, especially on the hit title track (one of the album's shining moments), a trend that he perfected on his huge 1996 self-titled comeback album. So Get Up on It finds Sweat in a stage of transition, leaving the formula that began to grow stale on Keep It Comin' and beginning to feature female backing vocals at center stage, somewhat similar to what Barry White and Luther Vandross had done before him. Get Up on It churned out two other singles, the up-tempo yet slightly unimaginative "How Do You Like It?" (which, as the set's lead single, didn't really work to catapult the album to massive early sales) and the big ballad "When I Give My Love," which is pure Keith Sweat. Other standouts include "Put Your Loving Through the Test," featuring the late Roger Troutman, and "Telephone Love." For fans of classic Keith Sweat, R&B ballads, and mid-tempo grooves, this album will do.

Triple threat, Keith Sweat; step up his game with his fourth release Get Up On It. This album begins with "Interlude (How Do You Like It?)" simply ask the question followed by "What make you feel good, baby?" that he seem to give the listeners. "How Do You Like It? (Part 1 & 2)" featuring Left Eye for this feel good tune and the remix which features a never ending bass line throughout. The titles seem to add to the opening interlude as "It Gets Better" gets even better. This song is a highlight for this album with it memorable bass and Keith's strong lyrical skills, production and yes, evens the whining. The title track featuring Kut Klose steals the spotlight with the slow grinding track and the dimension added by the ladies is quite inviting. Again, to complete the feeling, "Feels So Good" is an up-beat track with rougher elements to broaden his range as well as "Intermission Break". "My Whole World" latches perfectly to continue the flow of the album with great ease. Sweat's strength lie with his sense of mood setting and it becomes apparent on "Grind On You" to "When I Give My Love". "When I Give My Love" contains sexual connotations with lyrics such as "...in and out, out and in..." which is all that need to be said. "Put Your Lovin' Through The Test" featuring Roger Troutman is a perfect collaboration as the two combine for the one, two punch. After the interlude to "Telephone Love" you're invited to "Come Into My Bedroom". The titles define the mood, action and even the goal for the evening. This LP concludes with "For You (You Got Everything)" with the lights still dim and the night creeps to a near halt. Keith Sweat set the mood, said the words for you and serenaded the woman. It seems as if he did most of the work for you, but there's only one thing he left out for you to handle. This may be the hard part.

1994 was a very good year for me and for music. "Get Up On It" is an album that is almost remarkable. This whole album is congenial with excellent songs like "How Do You Like It", "Feels So Good", "Grind On You" & "When I Give My Love To You". Keith really did a good job in this album.

Clearly Underestimated This Album!!!!.......2002-06-06

I always thought "Get Up On It", Keith Sweat's fourth album as underrated from his other albums, but since I bought the album about three weeks ago I think I have clearly underestimated this album.

The slow songs on this album is arguably his best material! "It Gets Better", "Get Up On It", and "Grind On You" are my three favorites from this album. But Keith, take it from me, STICK TO THE SLOW SONGS!!!

Whisperings the Best.......2007-02-05

I stumbled onto David Nevue's piano work while surfing the web. This CD is a compilation of (I presume) some of the best compositions from his other CDs. Whisperings is absolutely stunning and outstanding. Unlike a lot of New Age music where you hear it once and then you move on, David's original works tend to stay with you. The melodies are really quite intricate and his playing is superb. I guess the finest compliment I could offer up for this CD is that my 16 year old daughter (who can switch between rock stations on my car radio faster than a speeding bullet) mentioned to me the other day "Hey Dad, this music is really, really nice to listen to!" Enough said.

I need not say anymore as the previous few reviews have done justice to it. Simply put, this is an excellent Piano player, composer. His songs are deeply touching and moving. I enjoy listening to it whenever i feel the need to relax. It is highly recommended by me.

"Whisperings" is a "best of" collection of fifteen piano solos from David Nevue's first four albums (1985-2000) and two previously unreleased pieces. Nevue's playing and composing styles are pensive and deeply personal, but communicate clearly to the listener in a gentle musical language. Often thoughtful and introspective, Nevue's work tends to be positive without being sugary, and reflects the strength as well as the surrender of profound faith. Nevue occasionally polls his listeners from his website about what their favorite pieces are, and such a poll was done to help in the selection of which pieces to include in this collection (similar polls are done from time to time to help decide which pieces to release in sheet music form). The four albums that are represented are "The Tower" (1992), "While the Trees Sleep" (1995), "The Last Waking Moment" (1997), and "The Vigil" (2000). Although the pieces are not in chronological order, it is very interesting to hear how this artist has developed over the years. Most of the selections are original compositions, but a few are arrangements; those are "A Turn to Grace," which evolves into a lovely setting of "Amazing Grace," "I Wonder As I Wander" by John Jacob Niles, and the classic hymn "Be Thou My Vision." A few of my own favorites are "No More Tears," "The Vigil," "Psalm 77," "Ascending With Angels," and "The Night Season." If you are new to David Nevue's work, this is an outstanding introduction. If you have his previously released albums, this is a really nice "cream of the crop" collection.

I ran across David Nevue by accident while surfing the net late one evening. After listening to his free mp3 downloads, I purchased all of his CD's. This particular CD is a compilation of his greatest hits. I recommend this CD for your collection. You will not be disappointed. It is outstanding! The music is excellent. David Nevue is the best kept secret in contemporary piano music today. Buy the CD and you'll see what I mean!

Elly Ameling now more available .......2007-03-07

I had a 33 rpm album of Elly Ameling singing Schubert lieder accompanied by piano and clarinet at times. It was one of my all time favorite albums so I have been disappointed that I have not been able to find it anywhere on CD.

Now I can just buy this excellent collection. So much music in one place! Since I confess that I am far from an expert on the rest of her records, I look forward to hearing her sing many other styles and composers.

I think it is silly to criticize her for not singing Wagner, for example, since her version of many songs, especially lieder, are nothing short of sublime. I would like to hear how many Wagnerians sing Schubert or Mozart.

I doubt if they could approach the skill and soul with which Elly Ameling sings lieder.

To speak as briefly as possible about this superb collection from an equally superb singer, what can I say but that Ms Ameling possessed a voice that shone with radiant warmth and star-like shimmer? And unlike many another light lyric soprano, Elly Ameling was possessed of a very high standard of musicianship, considerable intelligence, and a sort of immediate charm that captivates the listener.

So many of her recordings have still to be released on CD, but this 5CD-set goes some way towards remedying the situation. The repertoire spans a wide variety - French mèlodies, Lieder, light-hearted "sentimental" songs, Bach, etc. - and in each piece, Ms Ameling shows that quality of pearl-like beauty. It is a beauty which is also extremely pretty - a beauty of voice that is never overbearing and over-ripe, but perfectly blossoming upon the tree of inspiration.

I recommend this set unequivocally. It truly is sheer delight.

While they last..........2005-05-17

Elly Ameling held the quiet stage for recitals of great artistry and dignity for several decades and sadly most of the enormously successful CDs of her long career output are now unavailable. For those who have little access to the documentation of this very special artist, this box set is a must. It is a compilation of many of her recordings with differing accompanists, conductors, orchestras and composers. And while not all of the choices for inclusion here would be considered her greatest moments, there are enough works that sustain the warm memories of the little Dutch hausfrau who quietly and simply paid homage to composers with her clear and intelligent musicianship and radiant voice.

Ameling was known to schedule recitals of Schubert cycles and songs and in the afterglow of her performance answer the demand for curtain calls with additional Schubert melodies: she gifted her audience with the dignity of honoring a composer's works by maintaining the focus on that composer rather than milk the audience with the usual encore applause-getting favorites. And special moments such as quietly and pensively strolling through the orchestra during the Mahler 4th symphony to arrive at front stage, unapplauded, just in time for the opening line of her singing - those simple homage to composers and collaborators made her selfless manner endearing to audiences.

Despite the fact that Ameling's voice was on the small side she was always able to muster the projection to carry her message solidly in context with an orchestra. Yes, other more famous singers have recorded Ravel's quintessentially French SHEHERAZADE, but few have the perfection of diction and aura of mystery that Ameling maintained. Whether singing with piano or orchestra, or interpreting Bach, Mozart, Handel, and Vivaldi with the same degree of involvement as Brahms and Schumann and Schubert, Elly Ameling spanned a career that engendered passionate commitment from her fans. Ameling, one of the world's most beloved recitalists is captured here in a 5 CD collection offering some of her most beautiful recordings of song. While we are used to her perfection in songs of Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Faure and Hahn, an added joy is her "pop" side, tackling - without a whiff of pretension, Porter, Kern, Gershwin, Ellington, et al.

What an absolute joy it is listening to this amazing artist sing these songs with an almost uncanny natural ease. There is no resorting to a "pop" voice and yet most of these pop standards songs sound as though they could have been written for her. Clean attacks, sometimes a bit of the pop technique of hanging on to a consonant longer than a classical artist normally would shows an appreciation and understanding of the style. Still, there is never once a compromise of her vocal beauty.

I like the way the songs have been arranged for her voice in that she sort of sings them clean, unaffected in the first half and then lets loose and kinda "swings" with it adding embellishments but never really changing her voice (Price, von Stade and other favorite singers of mine seem to have always added a breathy quality to much of their crossover material.)

Ameling doesn't resort to trying to "let her hair down" or get down and dirty, but rather the honest with which she approaches every one of these songs shows how much she enjoys singing them and her style is as refreshing as stumbling onto a cool spring on a sweltering summer's afternoon. A wonderful surprise.

More than fully earned praise for an exceptional singer........2003-07-15

As I had the privilige of hearing this outstanding Lied-singer during her long career in Holland and being the proud possessor of almost all her recordings, I cannot but fully agree with the professional and joyful review of Mr. Robert Holliston from Victoria, B.C. Canada.
Yes, it is unbelievable that of about the 150 recordings Mrs. Ameling made during her long career (for the greater part of course on the 'oldfashioned' LP's, as well as the innumerable Dutch live-recorded radio-concerts), so few CD's have been released.
Speaking of tradition: it was the page-turner of the Wigmore Hall in London who told Mrs. Ameling after her first recital in this hall, that she reminded him of Elisabeth Schumann. (And he certainly didn't mean her looks only!)
For those who are eager to hear her singing Ravel's Shéhérazade (just one example of stirring imagination combined with her Art of Singing) I can tell you that Philips released a 2-box CD of this work in 1999, combined with Debussy's La Damoiselle élue and a compilation of French mélodies, i.e. Debussy, Fauré, Duparc, Satie. One of the gems is Caplet's Le Corbeau et le Renard which even make children, who know the fables of La Fontaine, revel in the singing of the quarrelsome birds....
Her brilliant accompanyist is Rudolf Jansen. Let us cherish great artists in their art!

Issued just before Miles Davis entered the dark years of his retirement in 1975, Get Up with It includes tracks recorded between 1970 and 1975, and offers a roster of stars from throughout that period: Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, John McLaughlin, Dave Liebman, Steve Grossman, Sonny Fortune, Pete Cosey, Billy Cobham, and Al Foster. Though something of a mixed bag, the disc does contain two of Davis's most important compositions. "He Loved Him Madly," dedicated to Duke Ellington, is a slow, almost novelistically developed meditation on Ellington's life and work, more than 30 minutes of music. "Rated X" is a buzzing, rattling essay on studio minimalism, and one that prophetically links world music and hip-hop, even before there was a name for such repetitive, incremental musics. Among the other tracks here, "Calypso Frelimo" offers some splendid Davis trumpet, a corrective for those who thought he had lost it by that time. Now digitally remastered, with a brighter sound, Get Up with It seems something of a summing up of Davis's great electrical period of 1970-1975. But it also hints at things to come when he made his comeback in the 1980s. --John F. Szwed

Love Miles Music Madly........2006-11-11

I love Miles the way Miles loved Duke. I even play with an electric band that tries to approximate much of his music from this period. Almost everything Miles did was simply golden. It's hard for me to think of a more than a track within a single era that I don't like. Perhaps the Gil Evans stuff speaks to me the least but I love all of it.

I had this CD on Lp when I was a young man so when I (finally) got the packaging and seals off of the thing, I was treated to this music that I hadn't heard for about 28 years!

I'll write a bit about every cut and give you the version of the band performing. Almost all of the tracks are great, though I don't "get" Red China Blues. I have no idea why Teo and Miles released that particular track. There isn't anything particularly special about this I-IV-V blues, and it is played with a group of guys you normally wouldn't associate with Miles, though Foster, Henderson, and Mtume were on hand for this jam, or whatever it is.

He Loved Him Madly - simply stunning. It starts of rather timidly and one begins to wonder when the piece is going to really start to take shape. Around the nine minute mark things really start coming together. There's a great flute solo starting at around 11 minutes and then Miles comes in with the wah-trumpet at around the 13 minute mark playing the most mournful, sorrowful lines I've ever heard. This piece is incredibly moving. It's dense. It's rather like walking into a dark tunnel with the sunlight at your back and you can feel the tunnel narrowing and you know there's no going backward. It has the acknowledgement of one's own eventual death and mortality written all over it. These are the emotions that I felt while I played this for the first time. Performed by the Dark Magus line-up of the band.

Maiyisha - essentially the same melody and structure heard on Agharta though the rhythm guitar comping is far more soulful here. Rather Marvin Gaye-like. Performed by the Dark Magus/Agharta line-up (sans Mr Fortune).

Honky Tonk - I was very pleased to hear this when it queued up. I purchased the Cellar Door Sessions and the Jack Johnson Sessions so I got rid of Live-Evil. There is one particularly funky bit at the beginnging of Honky-Tonk from Live-Evil where Jarrett is playing one note repetively on the organ with a wah pedal and I couldn't find that little edit on the Cellar Door Sessions. It's very funky sounding stuff. Anyway, I discovered it here on this version on Honky Tonk. It had been edited into the version appearing on Live-Evil. Performed by the Live-Evil line-up.

Rated X - This is found in expanded form on Miles Live at the Philharmonic. There's more structure here and it's easier to make out who is doing what though this is incredibly dense and dark music. This is the Live At the Philharmonic line-up.

Calypso Frelimo - This piece places this happy, carefree, and sunny little calypso melody line played on an organ over extremely heavy, dense, dark funk. Quite a contrast and it makes me smile in places. Make no mistake, it's a calypso holiday interspersed with an intense pychedelic trip! Played by the Agharta line-up with Liebman and Stubblefield in place of Sonny Fortune.

Red China - Meh, where's the skip button?

Mtume - full of wonderful sounding percussion, particularly a little bell melody figure that pops in on a regular basis played on what sounds like a-go-go bells of different sizes. Heavy funk. Played by the Agharta line-up

Billy Preston - more wild, psychedlic funk played by the Live at the Philharmoic line-up.

All of the tracks were recorded in-studio. While I love this CD I do not recommend it to someone who has not thoroughly sampled the lineups I mentioned aboved. There are some line-ups that new Miles listeners just might not appreciate.

If you've heard Agharta, Pangea, or Dark Magus and you liked what you heard, then this is probably a very safe bet.

Great stuff.......2006-09-18

I hesitated before getting this album, having been bitterly disappointed by "On the Corner". But this album is far superior to "On the Corner". It combines several tracks recorded from 1970 to 1974 to form Miles' last studio album.

1. HE LOVED HIM MADLY
The more I listen to this one, the better it seems to get. A seemingly directionless piece of ambient mood music reveals itself, on further listenings, to be a series of improvisations on a single musical theme. Mostly played in a swirling rubato, though there is a rhythmic bit in the middle. Miles plays mostly organ, with two very subdued electric trumpet solos. The rest is mostly electric guitar and a startlingly beautiful flute courtesy of Dave Liebman.

MAIYSHA
I love this tune. An easy-going peaceful ballad by Dave Liebman featuring some pretty fine blowing by Liebman, and some raucous electric trumpet work from Miles. This tune became a standard for this band.

HONKY TONK
Jump backwards four years and you end up with a quite different band - Keith Jarrett and Airto Moreira and Miles on an open trumpet. A deliciously energetic groove, with fine soloing from Miles. Live recordings show that this tune became a signature tune for the band right up to 1972.

RATED X
Quite possibly the most bizarre item in the entire canon, and it also became a standard for this band! How, I don't know! A churning, evil, sadistic organ solo from Miles fills up the entire track, with no beginning and no ending. Meanwhile, the 1972 band (including sitars) churns and thuds underneath. By some technological miracle Teo Macero manages to make the rhythm section turn off and on seemingly by magic. A very, very atmospheric piece. Try cranking it up to annoy the neighbours!

CALYPSO FRELIMO
The evil atmosphere continues with an absolutely mammoth track (half an hour long!) that also became a standard for Miles! This time Miles' trumpet is very much in the fore. Absolutely flesh-ripping solos like armour piercing flechettes soaring through the air...and a strangely playful calypso theme which reappears in weird contortions all the way through! A second section continues the identical theme, much slower (and with a slowed down bassline that sounds oddly like Super Mario Bros music...) A huge, sprawling gem - like a metropolis with too much going on to take in on one trip!!!

RED CHINA BLUES
I am among those who loathe this tune. Nice Miles soloing, though.

MTUME and BILLY PRESTON: I have not yet heard these tracks properly - MTUME became a signature tune of the band too!

KILLER Acid Jazz.......2006-08-04

Comprised of eight tracks in a sprawling, 2-hour timeframe, this album is nothing short of brilliant. It's probably not the best place to start for anyone who's a beginner into the Miles' canon but it's worthy of owning nonetheless. But keep in mind, this is not always an easy listen.

"He Loved Him Madly" is a song that can be desribed in a number of words: brooding, intense, scary, poingant, sad. But this is more than a song that pays tribute to a protege (in this case, Duke Ellington.) No, this is the sound of Miles exorcising his inner demons -- when his drug use and emotional angst were coming to a head. The first 12 minutes or so feature Miles on organ, with some eerie guitar work that sounds like music culled form a horror film. The latter is a relentlessly dark, sad, touching section where Miles' trumpet bellows like a somber foghorn. Think of Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" but even more somber, because here there are no words to explain the immense pain that an human being feels after watching their old friend slip away. When you hear this, it almost sounds like Duke's spirit is just stirring in the breeze.

"Myisha" is a more upbeat, 15-minute track. The initial nine minutes are comprised of lovely wah-wah organ and trumpet courtesy of Miles. At times, this has an almost Latin rhythym to it. Then, just when it sounds like the track is growing monotonous, this killer riff comes in that features some absoultely searing guitar work that could shame many of today's lead guitarists. Psychedelic jazz rock at its best!

The trippy, funky freakouts continue on "Honky Tonk," which features guitar work from some guy named John McLaughlin. An outtake from 1970, the mood here is playful and bluesy. A slow, neat little ditty in which Miles interjects when appropriate.

"Rated X" has been hailed as a blueprint for hip-hop. For all I know this could be true, but I don't see it, nor am I particularly fond of this track. Still, some people enjoy this track and hail it as a masterpiece - so obviously it's a matter of taste.

"Calypso Frelimo" kicks off Disc 2 and, like "He Loved Him Madly," clocks in at over a half hour. But unlike the former track, this latter one actually seems long even though it moves at a faster rhythym and pace.

"Red China Blues" is another early '70s outtake that features some truly mind-blowing harmonica work courtesy of Wally Chambers as Miles delves head-first into wah-wah distorition on trumpet. An absolute funk masterpiece. Clocking in at just 4 minutes, this is the album's shortest track that's a truly impressive, innovative piece from Miles. The title says it all: a song that would work well in a dimly lit room with a red light, wearing black, wrap-around sunglasses. This song is white-hot!

"Mtume" is nothing to write home about. It's another track where Miles explore the funk territory, but he's done better elsewhere on other tracks.

The album closes out with "Billy Preston" that features a bouncy, funky rhythym that continues repeatedly for just over 12 minutes. It's intriguing, but because it never changes course or explores a new beat, it does sound a bit repetitive after a while. A fun little number, regardless. Just a bit lengthier than it ought to be.

For those new to Miles Davis, this is an album worth hearing, albeit once you've had a chance to familiarize yourself with his classic material (i.e, "Kind of Blue," "Bitches Brew," "In a Silent Way," et al). It's important to understand this album came at a time when Miles had plummeted to a commercial and emotional low. In the midst of physcial health problems, commerical record slumps, personal angst and a growing drug addiction, here's a man who transformed all of these inner conflicts into an intense, understated, occassionally beautiful album. Most of the album's mood is playful, and Miles sounds as confident as ever. But even so, it's hard to completely erase the bleakness one feels after hearing the opening track.

Sadly, this would be Miles' last studio recording before his semi-retirement that lasted 1975-1981. But man did he go out with a bang! In some ways this is more bold and audacious than "Bitches Brew" and "On the Corner" in terms of Miles' explorations into other musical genres. Whether or not it's as enjoyable is another matter.

Too Much of Too Little?.......2006-06-30

Drawing together tracks recorded between May of 1970 and October of 1974, this sprawling, two-hour 1975 double disc is very much a grab-bag, the first of many which would follow over the ensuing five years of Miles Davis' leave of absence from the jazz world. Ill, drug-addled and generally fed up with the demands of his personal and professional lives, the legendary trumpeter would walk off a Japanese stage barely a month after GET UP WITH IT's release and - so the story goes - not pick up his horn again until late 1979.
In any case, the material on GET UP WITH IT reflects its creator's up-and-down state at the time, opening with an eerie thirty-two-minute requiem for Duke Ellington, "He Loved Him Madly," on which Miles plays both organ and trumpet against a droning background of electric guitars and funereal drum-tapping before zooming into the breezy, almost poppish "Maiysha," one of Davis' prettiest melodies from the seventies and a bracing nod to his long-neglected commercial side. These are almost certainly the album's two strongest cuts, but "Honky Tonk," a 1970 rehearsal nugget with both Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett on keyboards, does keep things moving. "Rated X" finds Miles back at the organ, making you wish he'd get back to the trumpet.
Disc two opens with another thirty-two-minute opus, "Calypso Frelimo," which unlike "He Loved Him Madly" really is far too long. "Red China Blues," the shortest track on GET UP WITH IT, is also just about the most unrepentantly rock-influenced thing Miles ever recorded, and features him doubling a wailing harmonica to good effect. "Mtume" and "Billy Preston" are meandering and monotonous jams of the sort Davis recorded too many of in his post-1972 acid funk period.
While the good stuff on "Get Up With It" certainly makes it a worthwhile purchase for fans of Miles Davis and/or seventies fusion generally, this is yet another example of a potentialy great single album inflated into a middling double. My guess is that this period of Miles' career isn't too far from getting its own "complete" boxed set, however, so we may yet get a chance to see all of this material in a very different context, for better or worse. We miss you, Miles!

This is a considerably expanded version of the soundtrack album to Vincente Minnelli's Oscar-winning film. With two discs and 100 minutes of music (much of which is presented for the first time), these original session masters are highlighted by the MGM Studio Orchestra, Oscar Levant, Benny Carter, and Gene Kelly, all of whom perform such memorable Gershwin tunes as "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Love Is Here to Stay," and "S'Wonderful." Just about all of the material has a monotonously mono sound, but Levant's version of "Concerto in F" is included here for the first time in true stereo. Along with several Levant improvisational piano solos based on Gershwin's music, there are also some outtakes as well as extensive production and historical notes. --Joseph Lanza

This comprehensive edition is a must have for fans of the movie and of the Gershwins. The outtakes, contrary to the first review above, are excellent. Gene Kelly offers a wonderful vocal of "I've Got a Crush on You" and his short riff on "'S Wonderful" is almost like an acoustic version, much different than the over-the-top duet in the movie. And the Oscar Levant piano pieces are as close to George sitting down at the keys as we're going to get.

I would not suggest buying this version of this sondtrack!!! The underscores and the extra tracks that are not featured in the film are not neccesary. Rhino records puts the extras out to jack up the price of the CD (making one LP into 2 CDs).
I would buy the ORIGINAL CAST SOUNDTRACK released by MGM records. You will enjoy this version ever so much more without all the extras!!!

GERSHWIN'S TALENT.......2001-08-12

Many agree that the talented George Gershwin is a fabulous pianist, and alongside Ira, he helped to create some of the most beloved music ever. After viewing the movie that was filled with song and dance, I was pleased to discover that the soundtrack was readily available. The plot of An American in Paris mainly focuses on the lives of three friends and their dreams in addition to the romance that they encounter in the most popular European city. Gene Kelley is a struggling artist who soon falls in love, and the many songs in this cd express his emotions. Who wouldn't want to dance to Gershwin's spectacular tunes such as "Embraceable You?" These original songs included in this two cd set are well worth the price. Furthermore, "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" is a true favorite with unique lyrics. Don't miss out on this must have cd collection.

Ga Ga for Gershwin.......2000-12-13

Nearly every popular Gershwin tune is represented here, either as an instrumental, a vocal, or a production number. I am not a big fan of the film, but the soundtrack is fabulous. There are some stereo tracks here, too. Yet another triumph in the Turner/Rhino soundtrack collection of MGM films.As a sidenote I would like to thank Rhino for their extremely co-operative staff. When I bought this CD I opened up the very extensive booklet and was disappointed to find that due to an error on the assembly line I had received an insert that had some pages repeated and others deleted. I contacted Rhino and they sent me a new booklet which arrived within a week! That's what I call excellent customer service. The really neat thing is the fact that I have both booklets. The flubbed copy is sort of a collector's item to me.
