Editorial Reviews
Company Flow really want you to know how independent they are. This seems to be their primary mission, and Funcrusher Plus is wacked-out enough to satisfy that agenda. Building off some previously released material, most notably "8 Steps to Perfection," CF often take a galactic-horror groove here, dropping in some skewed drumbeats and dense lyrics, forcing your head into a lopsided bob as you groove along to tracks such as "Silence" and "Definitive." These cuts try to violate your brain so much that they seldom make it to your ass, but the lyrics are tight and the hooks are original (check out the sitar in "The Fire in Which You Burn"). If you need a break from that same-same radio-ready hip-hop, Company Flow definitely have something for you. --Todd Levin

8 Steps To Perfection...Managed To Complete All, Form An Octagon (5 Stars).......2006-04-29
1)Independant As F**k, couldn't have been said better, because it seems like today (and back then), the majority of independant hip hop albums seems to be the best.
2)As a group, you'll enjoy of the lyrics that El-P and Big Juss puts together on a song. "Bad Touch Example" is a good song to get the vibe of what the entire CD is going to be like. "Eight Steps To Perfection" would have lyrical content to the song. "Population Control" is one of their best songs that they have made.
3)El-P manages to carry his weight when it comes to lyrics. Listen to the story telling "Last Good Sleep", or the freestyle "89.9 Detrimental"(even though some of the lyrics will be recycled), and you'll see what I'm talking about.
4)Big Juss can also hold himself too. With some solo joints also, such as "Lune TNS" for all you hip hop heads who remember the 1980's days of grafiti tagging. "Krazy Kings" is a nice song also.
5)DJ Mr. Len aka Space Ghost, may not be the best DJ out there, but he can do his thing. "Funcrush Scratch" and "Lencorism" is where he'll get his solo scraches to show his talents.
6)Guest Apparences are nice also. The Juggaknots, a group I never heard of, appear on the cut "The Fire In Which You Will Burn" which I'm pretty sure that you will like. Also one of the members, J-Treds, appears on "Collude/Intrude". A guy named BMS will appear on "Vital Nerve".
7)Creative skits (well I wouldn't call them skits, but interludes) are pretty nice too. Listen to the intro to "Bad Touch Example" and "Help Wanted". They may not be songs, but they wont let you down.
8) Production. If you read this review earlier, you know I wasn't too fond of El-P's production. But after listening to this a few more times and his solo Fantastic Damage, I realized that he could be one of the most creative behind the boards. It me, I spoke too soon, and it was all an aquired taste.
This is a wonderful CD for hip hop heads and fans of Rawkus Records. Independantly released, it may never get the respect that it deserves, probably because no one listens to hard banging hip hop these days. Highly recommended for those who only listens to hip hop commercially and is looking for a detour.
Standout tracks: Bad Touch Example, 8 Steps To Perfection, Population Control, 89.9 Detrimental, Krazy Kings, In The Fire In Which You Burn.

the more i listen to el-p's beats here, the more amazed i am. way better than any of his other (also pretty amazing) stuff. these guys (big jus, el-p, & mr. len) drop pop culture references that will knock you out of your chair left and right ("you couldn hang if you was bit by a radioactive spider") but it never comes off as gimmicky. really - one of my favorite albums ever. definitely going to the desert island with me when my time comes.

8) Production. At first I thought El-P's production was just awkward sounding, like he outdid himself at some points. But after giving this (and Fantastic Damage) a few more spins, I've realized that he was a genius behind the board. His creativity is what helped rise Funcrusher Plus making it one of the best albums of 1997.
Aside from that, this is a wonderful CD for hip hop heads and fans of Rawkus Records. Independantly released, it may never get the respect that it deserves, probably because no one listens to hard banging hip hop these days. Highly recommended for those who only listens to hip hop commercially and is looking for a detour. If you like this album, I also recommend that you purchase Mr. Len's "A Tribute To Company Flow" of all their hard to find 12" singles.
Now the spotlight reviewer says there has only been 13 reviews since 1997. This is reissue of their CD (it's been reissued I think 3 times since 1997), and there is the same exact older copy of it on this website where it has almost 50 reviews, so there are some people who have discovered Company Flow.

BASSMENT HIP HOP.......2006-04-13
For the guy who says this is boring........2006-03-20
The guy who said this was independent as f**k wasn't kidding, indeed. This CD bleeds underground from weak quality to nitty-gritty lyrics. This is a must buy, whether you think you'll like it or not because this is the beginning of underground. Obviously Company Flow was the beginning of the label Definitve Jux, a juggernaut of underground hip-hop.
The CD is a good one to listen to on your headphones because it doesn't intertwine very well with the whole driving thing cause it is not super "upbeat." All songs on the disc are worth mention, but I'm not going to mentionall of them so I'll just leave it off here. Pick up the album.
1 Star?.......2006-02-04
"Independant does not make you good. Underground does not make you good. Different does not make you good." Quite a vague statement... Independant doesn't necessarily make you good, but it certainly is commendable, especially something as groundbreaking as Funcrusher Plus. Company Flow summed up what "Underground" hip-hop is all about; raw lyricism, gritty beats, and a f@#k you attitude. Some believe that "Underground" or "Alternative" hip-hop stays true to the hip-hop culture's basic principals and methods... I am one of those people. This album came out in the height of P. Diddy's reign over the music industry, starting Rawkus Records'debut, which in a big way made independent artists more likely to be heard. Different does make you good. Different sets you apart from everyone else, especially the commercial garbage that was and has been dominating the "hip-hop" scene since 1997. El-P has made some of the nastiest, dirtiest, and influential beats since "Enter the 36 Chambers." The Deltron 3030 album and MF Doom's material is very good, but it doesn't compare to this album's contribution to the resurgence of the true hip-hop culture. Battle rhymers? Isn't that the cornerstone of MCing? The ignorance this person posesses when it comes to hip-hop is astonishing! Buy this album. You won't regret it.
