About the Artist
My past is definitely relevant, but as I greet you, let my essence arouse authentically what is the present. From the crevice of a jail cell, insulated with cold steel, I present to you the world-Erkie aka L'Ouverture. This diction is simply an exemplification of my personification. Truly an extraordinary individual who was blessed with a gift to write and recite. A troubled soul from birth having experienced extreme grief, loneliness, and poorness transformed those handicaps into brilliance, intelligence, and poetry. My gift is a significant one. Simply to move the hearts of millions, not by my sympathetic situation, but by the electrifying true life story of a have not who is desperate to reach out to the masses and give in return what has been given to me. Stuck in Angola State Penitentiary on a parole violation in 1996 with a pending first degree murder charge, facing the death penalty all I could do was pray to God and hope he would free me. There I read about and studied the history of the heroic Toussaint L'Ouverture, and took on his beautiful name. I wrote the song "Free Me" while in Angola on a maximun security tier on the Camp J unit, Toussaint and my personal experiences with prison life inspired me. Seeing my brothers actually being warehoused for the rest of their lives was heartbreaking while at the same time my own life was being judged by the district attorney, the judge, and my state appointed attorney. My comrades, I am struggling to be free, both mind and body and at the same time I want the masses to join me in my struggle for self-independence. I compare myself to Toussaint L'Ouverture. He was born a slave on the Brieda plantation in Haiti around 1744. He eventually went on to lead the first successful slave rebelion ever in 1791 against the strategic Napolen Bonaparte and his ranks. He was always greatful to those to whom he owed something and was extremely fond of childern. His very name became a tower of strength to his friends and a terror to his foes. Hence his presence was so impressive that none approached him without fear nor left him without emotion. If the world has reason to thank God for great men, with special gratitude, I acknowledge the divine goodness in rasing up Toussaint L'Ouverture. I used to think that death would be the only way that I would be free, but God has differnet palns for my life. Was I or am I reincarnated? I belive in reincarnation. Toussaint died and here I am in th flesh. I should not die! Why? I am a born leader and if I die who will champion the cause of my people. From my great circle to the world: If I breathe, we live.
