Since Death Row Records' 1990s rap reign of terror ended with Dr. Dre's escape, Tupac Shakur's murder, and CEO Suge Knight's imprisonment, post-Death Row success has eluded the Philly-born, LA-bred rapper known as Kurupt. His first solo album, Kuruption, an East-Coast/West-Coast themed double CD, and his follow-up album, Tha Streetz Is a Mutha, an orgy of violence and Crip-gang fetish, did not live up to expectations. But with Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey, it appears the third time's a charm for the talented ex-Dogg Pound gangster, as is the LP's motif. A fantastic voyage combining sci-fi futurism, criminal menace, and blunt smoke, Space Boogie features warm grooves from veteran producers DJ Quik and Kurupt's Pound partner Daz, as well as from newer names like Fredwreck and Soopafly. While Dr. Dre's absence here is as surprising as Kurupt's collaborations with Jon B, Everlast, and Limp Bizkit, there's mo' than enough bounce here for this "Cyanide Sinatra" to boogie. --'EL Juba

3 out of 5 stars "Tha Streets Iz A Mutha" It Isn't, but It's Still A Dope LP (Rating: 7 out of 10- -3.5 stars).......2007-07-06

Kurupt is part of the reason why I enjoy west coast rap music. After an excellent sophomore album Tha Streetz Iz a Mutha back in '99, he comes again two years later with Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey. This album still has that west coast sound, which is what I like to hear from Kurupt.

What had me skeptical was the questionable lead single "It's Over Now" with Natina Reed (who really should have stuck to singing because she cannot rap), because it was so pop frendly. But other songs on here redeem that song from making the album a loss. One of the great songs here is "Can't Go Wrong" with DJ Quik and Butch Cassady. Another dope song is the song, "The Hardest Muthaf*****" featuring Xzibit, MC Ren (who rips a nice verse), and Nate Dogg which I really like. And whats a Kurupt album without Daz making an appearance (they're paired together like Redman and Method Man.)? Daz lays down some vocals on "Gangsta's" and "F Da World" two standout songs.

Although this album is dope, it isn't Tha Streetz Iz a Mutha. A lot of these songs here are hit and miss as well. As I mentioned before "It's Over Now" was unappealing. Infact, the beginning of the album starts off real slow and pickes up when you hit the sixth track. Also some of the songs send the album into a different direction like the R&B sounding song "Sunshine" with Jon B, and the political type song "Kuruption" with Everlast's singing. They're not bad tracks, but if you're used to hearing Kurupt, you will be a little thrown off.

But overall Kurupt's third album is worth your time. You still get those tracks that made you love Kurupt and Tha Dogg Pound to begin with. And I really cannot complain, because I had to let this album grow on me. To be honest, it was actually better than I thought. I slept on this album back in '01, and found this album in the used CD bin at the store, and decided to give it a listen. If you're a fan of Kurupt or Tha Dogg Pound in general, I recommend this album to you. Peace.

4 out of 5 stars Good album, maybe his best work since Dogg Food.......2006-07-11

I'm not sure which is better, this album or Tha Streets Iz a Mutha, but these two albums are certainly the best of his solo career. To this day I still believe Kurupt has never quite lived up to the level he showed on Doggystyle and Tha Dogg Pound's excellent debut Dogg Food, but he does come close with his 3rd solo album Space Boogie.

After the intro the album kicks off with the title track which is a real banger, Fredwreck provides a sick beat which Kurupt & Nate Dogg ride well. On Da Grind is the next great track, produced by and featuring old partner Daz, and DJ Quik provides a funky beat and drops a verse for Can't Go Wrong which is one of the highlights of the album. Those are my 3 top tracks but there are several other good songs, The Hardest.. with Xzibit, Nate Dogg & MC Ren is a great gangsta track with a great beat from Fredwreck (sounding very Dre like). On Onsite, Gangsta's, Bring Back That G.., At It Again & Kuruption are also great, on Kuruption it is good to see Kurupt try something political, which works surprisingly well. It's not all good news though, It's Over is one of the worst songs i've ever heard in any genre of music, and is completely out of place on this album. It feels like Kurupt went out of his way to make a hit but it just ends up sounding awful, it is bubblegum rap at it's worst and has perhaps the worst hook in hiphop history. There are a couple of other skip moments as well, and a strange appearance from Fred Durst and DJ Lethal of Limp Bizkit, no idea how Kurupt got involved with these clowns but surprisingly Lay It On Back is O.K.

Overall Space Boogie.. is far from perfect but it has enough good moments for me to highly recommend it, in general the production is superb, Fredwreck handles a lot of it, Daz, Quik, Soopafly and DJ Lethal????? do the rest. The best tracks as mentioned above are superb, the worst track(s) are pretty terrible, but it's a solid 4 star album all in all, and one of the best West Coast albums of this decade, check it out!

5 out of 5 stars A Wide Variety of Hip Hop Styles Offers Something For All!.......2005-05-30

Kurupt's third solo effort: Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey has something for just about every hip-hop fan. It has some mainstream pop-rap: "It's Over," The album also has G-Funk: 1)"Can't Go Wrong," (DJ Quik heats up the production! Nice funky beat with a jazzy hook.) 2)The title cut, which you can lowride to! and 3) "Sunshine" with an old-school beat. and finally 4) "At It Again" with use of a talk box and a fast party beat! The album also caters to the hard-core fan: 1) "The Hardest" 2)"On Da Grind." The album has appeal to even rock fans: 1)"Lay it on Back" w/ Fred Durst (does have a hip-hop beat, though). The album also has a few songs with an underground feel like "On, Onsite" w/ Lil 1/2 Dead. The different styles and Kurupt's unique personality make this album a neat addition to your rap collection. This album is not so much set trippin' and gang banging as in Tha Streetz Iz A Mutha (though that one is tight too!) This is his main party album, something to relax to and party to!

5 out of 5 stars guitar sound is a spangly spangly new twist.......2005-04-26

Kurupts skills on the mic are nicely above average, the guests spots are terrific but it's the BEATS on this one that make it way, way up there above the clouds. Namely, that guitar sound - check out the steely guitar sound - only the west coast can use guitars like this- check out "on, on sight" and "the hardest". Best tracks I've heard for a long, long time.

2 out of 5 stars Space Loogie: Joke Oddessey.......2007-06-17

When Kurupt changed his style around(which was better the way it was)after he left Deathrow, I was still able to enjoy albums like Kuruption and Tha Streetz Iz A Mutha but this album left a peculiar taste in my mouth. The Good: On Da Grind and Gangstas(both featuring Daz) are vintage Dogg Pound tracks. On, On Site is as solid as Kurupt gets and Xzibit and Mc Ren join in on The Hardest(the best song on here) as all three kick it over a cold Fred Wreck beat. Just Dont Give A is runner up for the second best song on here. Sorry to say but that's it. The Bad: Space Boogie is so bad its funny and Hate On Me is made worser with a corny verse from the ever so wack Soopafly. Lay It On Back is pure dookie and so is the Snoop assisted Bring Back That G. The DJ Quik assisted Cant Go Wrong is terrible and that has to be the worst beat that Quik has ever produced! The Ugly: It's Over(which features Kurupt's former wife Natina and member of that weird girl group Blaque)and At It Again are two commercial bloopers that should have never seen the light of day on this album. Sunshine is absolutely dreadful as Jon B pumps lifeless vocals into a lifeless track. Kurupt tries to get deep on Kuruption(which features Everlast) but since Kurupt is about as deep as a puddle of pee, the song fails to make sense. Da World which features Daz ends the album as these two kick forgettable verses over a corny wannabe gangsta sounding beat. Bottom Line: Space Boogie is the worst album Kurupt ever made. Even though Against The Grain wasnt anything to talk about, it was better than this.

    5 out of 5 stars Musical genius.......2001-08-31

Kurupt couldn't do anything wack if he tried his hardest. Kurupt is definitely one of the best, most talented MCs/musicians/producers out there, without question. Would you expect anything less than the most amount of stars from him? I certainly wouldn't. Kurupt is smooth, versatile, flexible. He covers all of the ground of a creative genius. All of his guests are fantastic. I commend him highly on his choice of associates. Kurupt is always on the rise, can't stop, won't stop! Big up to K-U-R-U-P-T and crew. You did it again.

5 out of 5 stars Space Boogie: Must Have!.......2001-07-28
