Me'Shell continues to impress me with her work! She is a true artist at hand. I am upset that I didn't know this experience when this album came out. This is more confrontational than her debut project, and I fell in love with her then! Sistah, keep speaking your mind!

Cutting...edge...hip-hop for adults........2005-04-25

I first heard "Barry Farms" first on KCRW in L.A...then ran out and bought the CD. I am now arranging a cover for my band. Will have to have to give it to our male singer for most venues. I wonder if our female singer would do this one?
Bravura lyrics on the theme of Lesbian relationships, (toasted the ears of this middle-aged white male doctor).
Sensual but sophisticated, in no way obscene. Amazing.
esp. "Barry Farms" and "Pocketbook".
Very stylish jazz twists and turns in otherwise raw, throbbing hip-hop rhythms. First rate jazz instrumentalists.
Michelle's voice is the Anita Baker of street-rap. Hip-hop for adults.
Very, very original material and style.
(The righteous political/ghetto rhetoric on some cuts is sincere but has been done before. She should stick to her wry, I-don't-care ironic style when getting into done-before topics.)
At least 6-8 first rate cuts on this long album. Definitely not for kids, in every sense of the word. Worth every penny. Still amazes me a year later.

It's no "Passion"...but it's better than "Bitter".......2005-02-18

A bass player friend of mine turned me onto Meshell back when "Plantation Lullabies" was released in the early 90's.
I enjoyed it immensely. Then I bought "Peace Beyond Passion"
when it came out a few years later and that album placed her in the musical genius category in my mind.

I imagine it must be hard to compete with yourself whenever you release a stunning piece of work like that...particularly when you are allowing the events in your life to dictate the mood, tempo, and (unfortunetely) quality of your releases.

Meshell seems very angry here. There's nothing wrong with being angry, but when you put anger on a CD you have to know whether or not the audience wants to hear your anger. I didn't.
I just want to hear her kick out some nice groovin jams as she did on her first two CD's. The bitterness she exibited in her last release was even harder to listen to...what was it called? Oh yeah..."Bitter"!

There are a few of examples of nice groovin' jams here.,but much of it is overwhelmed with her anger. Being more of a jazz fan I listen to instrumentation first, arrangements second, then maybe lyrics last. Sometimes I don't even care what the artist is singing about as long as I dig the instrumentation and the songs have a nice groove and the album has a seminal flow.

The songs on this CD are too overwhelmed with politics, spoken word interludes, sound bites, etc. to allow you to focus on the music. I really hate when artists do that. Meshell, leave these tactics to Janet Jackson and gangsta rappers...your music is strong enough on it own without resorting to gimmicks.

If you are really into knowing what Me'shell is "feeling", then you will probably enjoy this CD more than I did. Meanwhile I'll just pop "...Passion" back in my car CD changer, crank it up, and enjoy her at her musical best.

Pure Funk.......2004-09-24

Cookie is the FUNKIEST...just the right mix of consciousness and pure musicianship. I bow to her bass. It's like that. "Earth" is the TRUTH...Gregoir's harmonica is almost as stunning as the lyrics on that joint. I'm a fan for life. I'm that fan that will buy her music even if she's singin the Popeye's menu. I'm there.

A Diamond in the Dirt.......2006-03-19

Camoflauge was one of the best rappers around. His music is still better than most nationally known artists today. He was from an independednt label in Savannah, GA. He was once signed to a major label but was dropped after being incarserated (and later found innocent).

If this scenario had occured only a few years later (after the explosion of 50 Cent and the like), Camoflauge would have been guaranteed instantaneous national recognition. His local releases garnered him amazing loyalty in the region. Camoflauge was shot outside of his recording studio with his baby son in his arms.

When I first heard "Keepin it Real", I was not much a fan of underground artists. I was under the impression that their musical skills were lacking and most were generally stupid. I think I got this impression from the Lil Jon types who don't really ever "say" anything.

Camoflauge showed great lyricism, musicality, and amazing production. "Keepin it Real" is one of the best albums I have ever heard. It is a shame that he was slain before the world really got to hear him.

He rapped about real life and harsh conditions. He also had some fun, lifestyle songs. He wasn't however, bound to the typical "I'm a thug" or "I'm a pimp" style of many rappers. Camoflauge rapped about real issues and profound viewpoints. He was by no means a "concious rapper", but definatley a great rapper. Its easy to tell that he was influenced by 2Pac. His style is very distinct, however. Camoflauge was not just about "thug life". He regulary participated in charity events and gave gifts to area students during Christmas time, dressing up as "Camo-clause".

If you are a fan of rap, you must check out Camoflauge. He will become one of your favorite rappers.

it seems like with every album, PRT got more aggressive and deeper. it's like with this one, they took our hand and pulled us further in. for me, it's EASY STAR. the toasting on that is lovely along with wise intelligent's flow and father shaheed's cut's and scratches. like i said before, anything from PRT is worth getting.

Straight up:

Tony D produced a gem while Wise Intelligent dropped some ill lyrics. All 13 tracks are def head bobbing material, check out the 30 sec samples, all the songs are dope with a good sound and feel. Wise's rasta style of rapping similar to KRS-One's style fits perfectly with Tony D's work on the boards. Wise's rhymes are well constructed and chalked full of knowledge. This album is worth the out-of-print cost. All the songs have a great sound and each in their own right are work of a genius.

this follow-up is nothing but tight! Wise Intelligent, Culture Freedom and Father Shaheed r 3 of Jersey's finest! 2 top-flowing mc's and a awesome d.j., what more u need? i been a PRT fan since they dropped that first single, "Rock Dis Funky Joint". i copped it soon as it hit the music stores. i got their tapes and as soon as cds came out, i got them on cd as well. on this album, "Shakyla" is hottest cut on that album, that piano sample they used is str8! "wake up from those sadden dreams, makin' that she sure is mine. take those earrings and those silly chains, they r simply just a waste of time, the queen is mine". that hook is awesome!

An amalgamation of pride, funk, and genius.......1999-08-28

Pure Poverty, along with PE's Fear of a Black Planet and X Clan's Exodus, literally saved my life. This trio elevated the rap game to the point where rappers wanted to get black instead of get paid. Strictly Mash'ion is a perfect song with one of the best hooks ever. And when you hear Comin' Again, you realize that Wise Intelligent is easily one of the top five rappers ever. He and Culture Freedom, Father Shaheed, and Tony D demonstrate that Five Percenters love themselves and truth--actual facts--is the best ear candy around.

My favorite Rap CD.......1999-04-21

I could easily be one of the members of the band writing this review but I'm not. Suffice it to say this is the best rap I know of. I'm here because I gave away the CD as a present and want to buy a new one. Basically this is rap that has all of the ingenuity you want from adept rappers but without the attitude and the gratuitous use of expletives. I mean Tribe Called Quest is capable and everything but it's not on this kind of tip. Yet while PRT is righteous it isn't boring the way, for instance, Arrested Development is kinda boring. It doesn't take things all the way to the granola level. I think Spearhead did the Arrested Development sort of thing right but it's not exactly rap either. PRT is rap.

I feel this cd. It has touched me in some real hard times. It is hard to find music that is true. Music that the artist has lived. I feel if you have not lived it you shouldn't rap about it. This cd is worth buying. 4 sho.

CLOUT if you can find it, is a much better album. This cd is tight, but with Chosen gone -- it lacks what CLOUT has.

MOSS POINT!

MVP bringing that underground M E M P H I S sound again..........2000-09-13

After 5 years since his first release I think MVP still gots it. Not too many people know who MVP is but thats only because the MEMPHIS rap game ain't getting as much as respect as it should. But anybody who knows their history Memphis along with Texas were the first to put it down for the south. MVP's second release doesn't have that CASH Money sound nor that NO LIMIT but it deffinately has that south bound sound. MVP along with the Monsta Klick has a future in the rap game and this CD is deffinately worth checking out. So if you want to know how the original underground south rap sounds like, this is the perfect cd... SO GOT GET IT FOOL!!!

The track from Elastic Band, Running Up That Hill, is a rare and out-of-print song, and this CD is the only way to obtain this track today.

(Running Up That Hill is a cover of the Kate Bush song.)

pure energy 2 ... you should get this cd.......2000-02-09

I like this CD a whole lot, I play it almost 3 times a week. Personally I got this CD for the track 'Running up that hill' (Alex Party Version) performed by Elastic Band which is extremely hard to find anywhere you look! I also like U96's Love see's no colour which is a good techno/alternative track. The Goodmen's Give It Up is also here but its the edited radio version. I also like More & More by the captain hollywood project which is also here, the bass is kinda heavy but it's pretty good. It also has other tracks known to many and played on your local dance station, but the ones mentioned above is the reason why I got it. I like it so much that I own 2 copies!

Just listening to a few beats on the first track got my addrenaline rushing. "Funk Phenominon" has got to be one of the most energetic hits I have heard on the market. Armand Van Helden is a techno genius. His wild and funky beats will throw your feet into overdrive. Pure Energy vol. 4 is a must buy.
