Not Santana, but that's cool.......2006-03-25
These guys are obviously going to be compared to the much better-known band Santana, and they're similar in their Latin-Caribbean jazz-and blues-influenced percussion-infused music. Some of the tunes, like "Juntos" sound very much like Santana. They are not a Santana rip-off since both bands formed about the same time; in El Chicano's case, East LA (War's old neighborhood) in the late '60s. The band does not have a guitarist that can compare to the incomparable Carlos Santana (although Mickey Lespron has been compared to jazz guitar great Wes Montgomery), nor an organist as powerful as Gregg Rolie in Santana's glory days, but they harmonized better than Santana, seemed to take a few more chances at least early on, and their music can stand on its own. The jazz influence here is strong.
The CD kicks off with their version of jazz pianist Gerald Wilson's instrumental "Viva Tirado", a Top 40 tune and an enormous hit in the LA area in 1970 with its haunting organ and guitar, followed by the completely different take on the Van Morrison classic "Brown Eyed Girl", which can be compared to a Latino version of Jimmy Buffett's rendition of the number. "El Cayuco", written by Tito Puente, and "The Latin One" can both be compared to Santana's "Dance Sister Dance" (which came out later); with the ending to "The Latin One" clearly inspired by Santana's "Savor".
Their best-known hit nationwide, "Tell Her She's Lovely", which made the Top 40 in 1972, is one of the few cuts on the CD with words. "Sabor A Mi" is a dreamy Spanish-language love song that sticks out a bit on this CD. "(Se Fue Mi) Cha Chita" starts out and has the same kind of beat as "Viva Tirado" but has strings and is an easy-on-the-ears piece. "Cubano Chant" starts off with a slow organ solo and builds to a moderately-paced instrumental, and when Lespon's guitar kicks in midway through, brings the tune all together.
"Canteloupe Island", written by Herbie Hancock, is a percussion-enriched number with B3 organ work that reminded me of jazz-soul organist Brother Jack McDuff. "Ahora Si" is a bi-lingual anti-war message; this band was not afraid to express itself politically or, in the words of the liner notes, "reflect the realities of the Mexican American experience"; not unlike War. "Gringo En Mexico", written by Wendy Waldman, has horns and strings with a mariachi beat; that's certainly different.
Call them a jazzy version of Santana, but don't call them "poor man's Santana". These guys could play. Obviously one to get if you like jazz or Latin music.
El Chicano- A gringo's perspective.......2005-09-20
I first encountered El Chicano in (of all places) Portales NM in 1972. They scheduled an impromptu one hour lunch time concert at ENMU. There was a small sign that just said, "El Chicano-Noon at the SUB." Nothing else. I wandered over there thinking- cool a lecture on The Chicano Movement in the U.S. It was the best education of my life. They played for over 3 hours and opened my eyes to Latin Rock and Roll. There was about 50 of us in the audience listening, dancing, playing air congas, guitars, and keyboards along with the band. A truly great band of MUSICIANS. They got their message across in the universal language of music. Unfortunately I haven't had the pleasure of attending a repeat concert but it is still on my life's list of goals. I understand they have re-formed and are doing limited engagements. If you ever get the chance to go to one of their concerts, go and be prepared to be blown away by true musicians.
Cool mix of Latin jazz, funk, soul & rock.......2004-11-10
One of East LA's hottest and most commerically successful Latin rock bands of the early 1970s, El Chicano fused rock, funk and jazz with deep latino roots, sounding at times like contemporary bands such as Santana and War, while also incorporating overtly jazz influences. On this 12-song disc alone, they covered songs by Tito Puente, Van Morrison, Ray Bryant, Herbie Hancock and -- I kid you not -- Wendy Waldman. The band's eclecticism was backed by a strong musical base, and these tunes are uniformly strong. This is a nice summary of their career, and a good example of the amazing creative ferment of the time. Recommended!

Some good Chicano Music!!.......2003-12-02
This is a great collection of Latin Rock from the 70's! El Chicano has always been a favorite among Raza. There is some variety here with some songs, straight ahead Latin Rock, soulful Latin ballads, and instrumental classics. In the lowrider or just for listening pleasure, I highly recommend it. Also there is a compilation "Back to the Barrio" - rare and hard to find Chicano classics vol. 1. with 21 songs of rare and out of print titles available from Chorizo Records. chorizomusic2003@yahoo.com "Orale!!"
GOOD STUFF IN ANY LANGUAGE.......2003-09-01
Well, here I sit, wondering how I could have so thoroughly
misspent my youth without ever coming across this band. I heard
them on this cd for the first time yesterday. It was recommended
to me by a guy reviewing a "WAR" cd, and I thank him very much.
This is how I would imagine "SANTANA" music would sound if it
wasn't Americanized for mass appeal in the US. Most of the songs
are instumentals and do bear a resemblence to the more Latin
side of "SANTANA".On most of the songs with lyrics I don't have
a clue what their saying, being that I don't understand the
language. But no matter, these guys sound great in any language! This is a first rate cd, and check out the price! I plan to buy
all I can get my hands on by this band. "EL CHICANO"
Thank you
Four stars.......2003-04-18
There are two recordings in this record that deserve five stars:
"Viva Tirado" and "Cayuco". The rest is rather poor, specially "La Cucaracha". However, the price is very attractive and that is why I concede it four stars.
Major Early Latin Music Influence.......2003-03-17
...I have all the vinyl, wrapped and CD'd. I always thought they really personified what real Latin/Chicano music meant to us Gringos who needed an intro beyond the "Evil Ways" music...Sound a lot like many of the good local Latin bands here in AZ. Beautiful music. I always wondered what happened to the Latina who sang so well on the second album (as in "Sabor A Mi").Go for it. No disappointments.
El Chican, El Magnifico !.......2000-03-08
Whoooaaa, Yeah all right ! This band smokes man, and sounds more like Santana than Abraxas Pool does, in fact it seriously compares to Santana. The sound of the congas has been beautifully captured in the mix and brought to the fore to great effect. The percussion sounds (in parts) like Osibisa's without the cabasa.
There are eleven tracks listed on this CD, but the boys have cheated by listing "La Cucuracha" as a song. It's really just a few seconds' jive, an excuse to have some fun and mention MA-RI-HU-ANA! OK, all's forgiven, no one's complaining.
All the tracks on this CD are first class. Track one, "Chicano Chant" is very Santana-ish, as is track ten "El Cayuco", and absolutely fabulous. Track 7 "Sabor a mi" is a ballad.....beautiful !
If you want to dance, turn the volume way up high, press continuous play, strip down to your underwear, if you're wearing a bra get rid of it.....outta tha window. Bottle of Tequila in one hand, whatever it is that you smoke on the other, then hit the play button and let 'er rip baby. Dance baby, dance. Yeeee Ha! Then... call an ambulance !

El Chicano in New Mexico.......2007-02-12
I was fortunate to attend a concert at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales NM - this was a concert of extreme energy. This concert was during the 70's when music was so pure and natural and full of flavor.
Can't miss with an El Chicano CD - great highway music or just sitting in the "crib" relaxing. the Dr.

Good Comeback CD.......2001-01-04
This is El Chicano's first studio recording of new material for a long, long time.
For those who have seen El Chicano play live recently, this is a good representation of the group's sound. For those who remember them in the '70's, this CD will not disappoint the memory. Some of their tracks from the old era sounded like well done Santana clones, though not here. Actually, this material sounds more like War or Santana than either of those groups have sounded for over 20 years--without coming across as derivative.

GREAT COMPILATION.......2003-10-07
This is regarding the correct email adress to chorizo records concerning the BACK TO THE BARRIO compilation cd.the email is chorizomusic2003@yahoo.com Though I Hear this is gonna be a great collection, those of you into the classic latin rock-latin soul sounds of the 70's MUST HAVE THIS CD!! This is a standard right next to Santana. EL CHICANO opened the doors to other great latin rock bands like Santana had done for them. Viva El chicano has great songs like the salsa rock classic El Cayuco, and funky jazz-rock like Viva tirado and Cantaloupe island. Tell her she's lovely is a latin soul/rock classic with great lyrics and and sweet vocals. YOU NEED THIS CD IN YOUR COLLECTION!!
Great latin rock.......2003-10-06
I would like to say that this is a classic album from a classic band. This is the true Chicano sound of the 70's This is a must have. All the songs are great!! look for another latin rock compilation by the name of -Back to the barrio-rare and hard to find Chicano classics on cd. WWW.chorizomusic@yahoo.com
WHAT IS LATIN & SIZZLES? EL CHICANO, OF COURSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-08-07
Like Malo, El Chicano is the OTHER 'Santana' type band that needs to be heard by all!!! With a TIGHT rhythm section, haunting melodies, enchanting lyrics, & a BEAT that goes on & on, this CD showcases this amazing, talented Latin 'Superstar' band at their finest!!! A jazz influence lingers throughout - along with gorgeous lyrics. Highlights include 'Viva Tirado', 'Cantaloupe Island', & 'Ahora Si' - but their FINEST masterpiece simply HAS to be the magical & romantic 'Tell Her She's Lovely'!!! And WHAT a MASTERPIECE this song is!!! I love Santana - but 'Tell Her She's Lovely'- (along with the classic Malo song 'Suavecito') - rival ANY hits by the amazing Santana!!! For sheer delight, put this CD, the classic 'Malo' CD, & your favorite Santana CD's & click on 'random play'!!! Now THAT is what we call 'Latin Heaven'!!! ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Loved these Latin rhythms.......1999-06-06
I was hooked within 30 seconds on the first cut. It has a latin flair that evokes thoughts of Santana and Booker T. I loved it, and I think you will too!!!
