Dick Dale's surf-guitar provided the memorable title theme ("Misirlou"), for Quentin Tarantino's 1994 smash, and although that sound runs throughout the soundtrack (along with bits and pieces of dialog from the movie), this is a pretty eclectic bunch of really terrific songs. I don't know how it all manages to hang together, but it does (you might say the same for the interwoven stories in the movie). Where else are you going to find Chuck Berry, Maria McKee, Al Green, The Statler Brothers, Kool & the Gang, Urge Overkill (singing a Neil Diamond ballad!), Ricky Nelson, Dusty Springfield, and the Tornadoes (among others) one album? McKee's beautiful "If Love is a Red Dress (Hang Me in Rags)" is a standout, partly because it's less familiar. One of the few soundtracks of the '90s that went into the CD player and stayed there for weeks and months thereafter. --Jim Emerson

Where's Wray?.......2007-04-16

I can't say anything about this soundtrack that hasn't been said a hundred times. The known songs are great and the surf songs are better. I just wonder why Tarantino didn't include Link Wray's "Rumble" that is played in the background during the Jack Rabbit Slims scene. It is such a great song, it would have put this soundtrack over the edge.

The soundtrack is better than the film..........2007-04-03

I like this soundtrack a ton. Surprisingly, despite the fact that I love films, I rarely buy soundtracks. I only buy them if I dig the music. This is one of the few soundtracks I have, and I play it quite a lot. I think Tarantino is an overrated filmmaker, but his choice of music here is excellent. I really like the Chuck Berry song You Never Can Tell, and I really love Miserlou, the theme of Pulp Fiction. Son of a Preacher Man is a bonafide classic, and I dig Jungle Boogie, which is superior to Kool and the Gang's awful Celebration song. This soundtrack is better than the film.

Still Tarantino's best.......2007-03-13

PULP FICTION is a movie replete with coarse language and violence. The soundtrack album accurately reflects that film. In particular, on track #1, Honey Bunny's exclamation prior to "Misrilou" is not for the faint of heart. Be advised that this CD is definitely NOT for the easily-offended.

The PULP FICTION soundtrack is a unique mix of primarily surf music, with a sprinkling of funk, pop and country. If you enjoyed the movie, this album is sure to please. Just don't play it for your grandmother!

Pulp fiction is wanna the best movie ever made and so is the sound track. Tarantino is brilliant when it comes to film music...i think thats what they call em?....

The best song of em all is the one when bruce willis(butch) trys to save his boss ving rahems(marcales) I just love that song but over all it is a great sound tract........it is one of my favorites that should not be missed by any

The initial release of the "Pulp Fiction" soundtrack was every bit as innovative as the film itself; after it was released to generally positive reviews everyone suddenly had to have snippets of film dialogue interspersing the songs featured in (or inspired by) their movies and Quentin Tarantino completed his video store clerk's revenge by being able to credibly claim to be influencing not only film for the last half of the 1990's but also film sountrack production as well.

The only trouble was that the original soundtrack CD, a complete blast to listen to under any circumstance, wasn't nearly as complete as it could have been. Most of the music from the "Jackrabbit Slim's" sequence was left off (most notably Link Wray's classic "Rumble", from the "uncomfortable silence" bit, made even more noticeable due to the, uh, uncomfortable silence).

This re-issue (sorry, "collector's edition") of the soundtrack, timed to co-ordinate with the re-issue of the previously bare-bones "Pulp Fiction" DVD in 2002 goes miles toward correcting this oversight, providing signature songs instantly recognizable from their respective scenes in the movie (assuming you've seen the movie as often as I have) and one, the Brothers Johnson classic cover of "Strawberry Letter #23" that I can't seem to recall from the movie to save my life...but it too is a welcome addition, completely in place with the rest of the songs.

It would have been nice to have added a couple more splices of film dialogue as well, but that's a piddling request in light of the very-badly needed material that finally makes its way onto the disc.

As for Tarantino's 16:09 "interview" that takes up the second disc, chances are you've heard it before...there really isn't much new ground broken here (although the revelation that "My Sharona" was QT's original choice for Ving Rhames, uh, "love scene" was pretty interesting), as Tarantino made sure to milk his status as Hollywood's "flavor of the month" for all it was worth back in the day to ensure we all understood his love for all things '70's and the manner by which his movies find their way out of his (no doubt vinyl) record collection. The second disc could very likely been put to better use than this, but of course it IS completely separate from the proper soundtrack itself so it's not as though it actually interferes with your enjoyment of a great soundtrack CD made even better the second time around.

Inflated reissue of fine soundtrack.......2002-08-31

"Pulp Fiction" wasn't the first movie whose mood grew from the pop songs that became its soundtrack. E.g., "American Graffiti" found motivation in popular music much earlier, providing a huge boost to '50s music nostalgia. "Pulp Fiction" helped fuel a popular resurgence of surf music, but more importantly, it was the film whose director spent a great deal of time discussing his music-inspired methodology. At the time of the film's release, Quentin Tarantino consumed numerous interview inches discoursing on his technique for drawing a film from his record collection.

For those who didn't hear or read Tarantino's explanation the first time around, MCA's "Collector's Edition" soundtrack (issued to accompany the film's DVD reissue) adds a 16-minute "interview" (actually, a non-stop monolog), as well as four tracks left off the original CD. The extra songs are terrific, but expanding to two discs solely to accommodate the 1994 interview (disc one contains the music, disc two the interview) positions this more for Tarantino groupies than anyone else.

Those interested enough to sit through Tarantino's self-aggrandizing film-geek commentary (at least, more than once) will have already heard what he has to say. Those who just want to relive the film, and enjoy the music, are saddled with an extra disc at added cost. To be fair, the price increase also covers royalties for the four additional track, but the addition of an entire disc to convey an eight-year-old 16 minute Jolt-fueled ramble seems like a vanity project.

The four additional tracks (The Robins' "Since I First Met You," Link Wray's "Rumble," Brothers Johnson's "Strawberry Letter #23," and The Marketts' "Out of Limits") have been added to the end of the standard-issue track list. This "Collectors Edition" features the same running order as the original, with the same dialog clips (with the same lack of banding on several, making it difficult to program them out, should you tire of them).

Given Tarantino's method, the soundtrack necessarily captures the mood of the film very well. From the rush of Dick Dale's opening "Misirlou" through Urge Overkill's cover of Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Now" and the Statler Brother's "Flowers on the Wall," this is equal parts film soundtrack and Quentin Tarantino mix-tape. What's odd is that the song order doesn't seem to match the movie. Perhaps as a mix-tape the album's producers felt the film's song order didn't hold up. This is a shame, since it reduces the listener's experience of the album as a film soundtrack (though, of course, a programmable CD player quickly solves the problem).

Original soundtrack (4 stars) - interview disc (1/2 star) + bonus tracks (1/2 star) = 4 stars.

Worthy successor to The Elephant's Baby.......2004-11-16

The first time I heard Clare Fader and the Vaudevillains perform was in a smoky nightclub in Durham, NC. I was hooked instantly. After listening to The Elephant's Baby, their first album, more times than I can count, buying copies for my friends for their birthdays (or just for the heck of it), I was thrilled to see that a new album was on the way. Seventh and Trade was worth the wait. Clare and the Vaudes continue to invent music that evolves and finds new expression even as it retains the power to transport you to a seductive past. "Tain Ya Ta Bain Mei Ren Gui", sung in Cantonese, is worth the price of admission all by its lonesome. This music is destined for a wide audience, and Seventh and Trade is a perfect stop at which to hop on board.

A Cabaret Jazz Gem Not To Be Neglected.......2004-09-28

Clare Fader and the Vaudevillains are experts at crafting melodies that nestle themselves deeply into one's head. "The Good Time Girl" can be described as such. Fader's voice is at its best and is complimented by the whole toy piano/harmonium thing going on here. Clare tackles the Cantonese language quite well with the beautifully arranged "Tain Ya Bain Mei Ren Gui". "Seventh and Trade" can be quite dark at times, but manages to crack the door just enough to let some light in. If cutting a rug is your thing, then try "Down on the Quay" and "Betty Crocker's Bail". Fader's lyric writing is amazing. The lyrics on this cd could easily appear by themselves on the pages of books as poems or limericks. I can't say that for a lot of bands. So if you are not familiar with Clare Fader and the Vaudevillains then it's time to be introduced. However, if you are familiar with her work then you definitely want to pick this one up.

Seductive music with a beautifully dark streak .......2004-08-19

I love this CD. It's colorful, sexy, and thoroughly unique. Whenever I put it on, everyone always says "who is that?" It's hard to classify but that's part of its charm.

This is terriffic for when you want to hear something different from the muzak performed by the Borg most people listen to. Some of the songs were less than wonderful, but the best are fun and original offbeat pop/jazz and well worth the price of the album. If you have the guts to experiment, not everything is going to work, but when it does, by god, it flies.

Yes. More dark decadence from Clare Fader, this time with her awesome band! I've been lucky enough to see her live twice in New York City. Sultry, dark, mysterious -- but childlike and magical at the same time. I heard her first on MTV's the Real World ("Don't blame the wine! Blame the man who sleeps in my bed!"), then found her beautiful web site which led me here to buy her first CD The Elephant's Baby. I've been yearning for more ever sice. Dont let the cover fool you. This aint no Redbone, this aint no Willie Nelson (good though those two artists may be). Link Wrays Polydor debut from 1971 sounds kinda like The Band meets The Rolling Stones, with a healthy side of Van Morrison playing gospel blues somewhere in the Mississippi Delta. Recorded in his converted chicken coop studio, Wray took a breather from his earlier electric guitar instrumentals to lay down a raw and intense album. If you are unfamiliar with Wrays work, he is probably best known for his 1958 hit Rumble. Though it only got to #16 on the charts, its influence is staggering. The late critic Cub Koda said that Wray invented the power chord. Pete Townshend of the Who said that he probably would never have picked up a guitar had it not been for the tune. Much of his early work from the Fifties may seem pretty tame now, but he was breaking ground for the likes of Dick Dale and a whole crop of guitarists that would come during the British Invasion, such as Clapton, Beck, and Page, all of whom have paid homage to Wrays talent. By most accounts, Link turned 75 this year (though it might be 73 or 68, depending on what you read), and hes about as far as one can be from the rock mainstream: Denmark. He moved there in 1978, and lives on an island where Hans Christian Andersen once made his home. And though his life has been far from a fairytale, Wray still manages to get out on the road from time to time, showing the kids how its done, comfortable in his status as one of the pioneers of rock. The album was remastered from the original master tapes in 2004 by the Grammy-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen, and it comes in a die-cut gatefold package that replicates the original vinyl release.

This is a great album but do yourself a favor and buy Link Wray's album Wray's Three Track Shack. This album along with two others (Beans and Backfat and Mordicai Jones)are all collected on Wray's Three Track Shack. All three albums are fairly hard to find and can get costly so do yourself a favor and buy Wray's Three Track Shack, it's well worth the money.

One of the best soundtracks'sss ever!.......2001-04-24

I really love this collection (my oldest brother has it) and it just rules. I prefer the Reservoir Dogs over the Pulp Fiction, but I'll do a sdtk by sdtk review. Pulp Fiction: Ok, but a little too many surfer songs. Most of the songs work on a nostalgic value, not really a listenable value. The way overplayed theme song is obnoxiously present, but a few good ones are here. Most noticeably Chuck Berry's "you never can tell" and "jungle boogie". The dialouge is really good, from the zed's dead to the ezekiel 25: 17. Reservoir Dogs: The better of the two, even though there is only eight real songs. Almost every single song is good. Little Green Bag is an excellent track-it captures the spirit of RD. I Gotcha is a real surprise good one, because it really grew on me. Coconut is the goofy one, but surprisingly listenable. Magic Carpet Ride is probably a little weak, as is track nine I think. Stuck in the Middle With You is surprisingly listenable, same thing for Hooked on the Feeling. As dialoguem goes, the "lets get a taco" is good, as is the madonna speech. As a juvenile youngster I'd used to see how much I get through with that Madonna Speech before someone yelled at me. Ha! Anywho, these are two very good soundtracks, but if you're short on money, buy the Reservoir Dogs instead.

Very Good Soundtracks........2000-04-11

Tarantino obviously loves music, as is evident in all of his wonderful movies. And the soundtracks for the good ones (Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs, Jackie Brown) are all top notch. The fact that clips from the movies are included is not only a bonus, but a testament to the fact that the real genius behind theses movies is their great scripts and crisp dialogue. I happen to prefer the Pulp Fiction soundtrack over the Resevoir Dogs one, but they are both very good.

Note: The soundtrack to Jackie Brown should also not be overlooked. It is as good if not better than either of these.

I love these 2 CDs! It comes with an interview w/Quentin Tarantino about the music he uses and it's really funny. I love all the surf music in Pulp Fiction, Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon, Son of A Preacher Man, and You Never Can Tell. The Reservoir Dogs CD is just as good. I like Coconut, Little Green Bag, and Stuck In The Middle. They're all great songs, and all the dialouge in the CDs ads to the soundtrack.. it's just as good as the movies.. which I own, too. I reccoment the CD . . .

This collection is beautifully put together. Mr. Tarantino set this whole thing up to capture the true spirit of both movies. If you're a fan buy these cd's. now.
