The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

4 out of 5 stars Mega-cutie who gives teen-pop a refreshing if not groundbreaking contribution.......2007-04-25

A pop-rocker in the mold of Kelly Clarkson, Joanna (born Joanna Pacitti on 10-6-84) is a capable singer who gives her best on every song. There is no formula here that hasn't been perfected before, but at least her music isn't the overbearing schmaltz that seems to be the trademark of many of today's singers.

5 out of 5 stars Great singer........2006-12-09

At age 11, this girl (Joanna Pacitti) starred in the 20th Anniversary national tour of the broadway musical, Annie, but was fired and replaced by 8 year old Brittny Kissinger, just prior to opening on Broadway. There was a big 20/20 special about it. Anyway, I've been following her every since (it was 1997), just waiting for her to finally get a break. She's a great singer, and I can't wait to buy this album! I've listened to clips on itunes, and it sounds great, this is why I've given it a 5, though I don't own it yet.

4 out of 5 stars So much potential, such little leeway.......2006-11-17

Joanna's voice is so far above all of the other pop singers out there. However, I feel like many of her songs have a bubble-gum undertone to them which is a shame with all of the potential she has as a ballad singer. Her voice is so powerful and fervent, and to see her perform live just further proves her talent as a singer. She literally stopped shoppers in their tracks when she performed over the summer at Roosevelt Field Mall in NY for an autism benifit.

My only complaint that I have with Joanna's debut album is that I feel it is not truly her own. Which seems to be evident with about 99% of the teen pop idols who sign their lives over to a record label. They lose the ability to think for themselves. To write songs they would want to listen to. To be who they are.

On a positive note, her piano solo titled "4th of July" truly encompasses her raw talent. Just slightly cheesy, but just wait until you're half-way through the song, and I guarantee it will bring a tear to your eye. And the more popular release "Let It Slide" while it is a typical pop release, it is still a very catchy song.

Also, some light should be shed on the lyrics in the songs that Joanna wrote herself. She writes with so much experience in life, that it is a wonder she is only 19 years old. A true songwriter is equally as impressive as a strong vocalist, and Joanna has successfully done both on this cd.

As for as the production goes, I wish I could say Joanna's album is edgy, something new to add to the pop world, a breakthrough, but then I would be lying. Perhaps it can serve only as a staple for her career, and what is to come. I am definitely curious to hear what she will release next, as her voice is that addicting.

I give this album 4 stars, simply because a voice like hers deserves ample recognition.

3 out of 5 stars Needs to find her niche; potential is strong though.......2006-10-12

This, along with Katie Melua's "Piece by Piece", KT Tunstall's "Eye to the Telescope", & Corinne Baily Rae's self-titled debut were chances I took this year musically. The three records I mentioned were beyond what I expected, delivering the goods. Though to be fair, I had never heard or seen Joanna before, though I was intrigued by the album art. And $9.99 Best Buy price tag.

To be blunt, this album was little disappointing. While, KT, Corinne, & Katie delivered amazing debuts, it seems all I could manage from Joanna was the hint of the potential she clearly has.

Her voice is beautiful & manages to come across rather convincingly on specific cuts (like "Let it Slide", one of the better cuts). Though, as I say...a voice isn't always the key to success. There needs to be a blend of lyricism, voice, & image. Joanna is lost in a Nick Lachey/P!nk/Kelly Clarkson sound. All guitars & lost love angst, & it doesn't go anywhere.

Though there are some highlights: "Utraviolet" is melodious & poppy, while the previously mentioned "Let it Slide" is utterly moody, the John Mayer-rock/funk/pop-clone workout "Tip Toe" works quite nicely.

Overall, not a bad album, but it could've been better. They say not to judge books by their cover, CD's should count as well. Joanna's got the voice & look, let's see if she can find a sound more individual & suited to her.

5 out of 5 stars Great voice, Great lyrics.......2006-09-24

I think she has alot to give. The lyrics are great, and her amazing voice..incredible. Worth to listen to.

Oh Julie, the songs you sang on this CD are superb. I wish you could still give us that joy. If you can only sing in the low registers, give us jazz!! You can do it I just know you can!!

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Sad, .......2005-10-27

Hollywood veteran Julie Andrews has had a glorious career, but not without its downsides. Her legend is built on "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" and other glorious roles. Her abilities as a singer were never impressive or great, her voice often sounded weak, but she always knew how to sing around her very limited vocal range. On this collection she performs some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written and even though she does a good job, her voice just doesn't hold up against many of these tunes. Her warmth is felt all over the album, in "Here I'll Stay" she wraps her gentle, but narrow, voice around it and in "My Funny Valentine" she sticks to the lower register of her voice. However, in the re-recording of her classic "Sound of Music" and in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" her voice fails her, it often sounds thin and airy and it's actually quite sad to listen to. When all is said and done Julie Andrews remains a great talent, and most of that talent is largely due to her amazing capability as a performer and her genuine warmth.

5 out of 5 stars I FELL IN LOVE WITH JULIE ALL OVER AGAIN.......2005-06-25

As a young kid growing up in the Philippines I remember my Dad playing his state-of-the-art Aiwa tape recorder back in the 60s and hearing Julie Andrews' voice - truly the voice of an angel! Now, hearing these songs again with adult ears I fell in love with her voice all over again !

5 out of 5 stars A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27

If you are a fan of Dame Julie's and musicals, this is the cd for you. It is a compilation of songs from prevously released albums; The King and I, The Music of Richard Rodgers, Here I'll Stay, and Victor/Victoria, Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.

The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.

Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.

5 out of 5 stars Climbing Every Mountain with Mary Poppins.......2002-01-22

Julie Andrews and her music have been an inspiration to me
every since I stepped into a theater and watched Mary Poppins
(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT BLUES.......2003-10-10

This CD again doesn't reinvent the wheel ( if it aint broke, why fix it) and sticks to fairly straight forward blues stylings. BILL PERRY has a great voice and writes good tunes. The lyrics are very good and as most of the songs are originals, that is quite a surprise. Most Blues cliche's get such a workout these days, that originality must be highly prized. The instrumental is superb, showing what an accomplished guitarist this man is. On most other tunes he plays memorable but not flashy solos. The tone varies from traditional to almost heavy electric blues and PERRY sounds at home in either style.
If you like the guitar and the blues, you won't be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars LOOKING FOR BILL'S VERSION OF ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER.......2002-12-13

I LIKE BILL PERRY! WHY AREN'T THE SONGS LISTED FOR THIS CD? I'M LOOKING FOR THE REMAKE OF ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER. THE OTHER CD'S UNDER HIS NAME HAVE THE SONG LISTS. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT CD THIS IS ON. I'M NOT LOOKING FOR A LIVE VERSION, IT HAS TO BE STUDIO!

5 out of 5 stars Great Blues Rock.......2002-10-31

Bill Perry is back to form on this latest release with more great blues rock and more straight up, back-to-basics Bill Perry than the last album. The Richie Havens cover of the Stones' "No Expectations" is a cool surprise. Also love "Honey Pie". Check this one out!

5 out of 5 stars Life- a review as we know it.......2007-01-09

This is one of Neil's and Crazy Horses best works. Rates right up there with Live Rust and Freedom!

4 out of 5 stars Most just don't get it........2004-11-02

OK, this isn't one of Neil's masterpieces, but it's a pretty good effort. Those who say it's weak, or lacks emotion just don't get it. This cd is packed with emotion, it's just more subtle than his casual fans expect. One listen to "Prisoners of Rock-n-Roll" should confirm his state of mind. Of course, most of the schleps who want "Hey Hey, My My" on every cd won't like this one. This cd is pure Neil.

1 out of 5 stars One so-so song, so one star.........2002-02-11

This record is by far Neil Young and crazy Horses' worst. No need to own this at all, not even for completeists. "inca Queen" is the only half-decent song here, and it's overproduced. Avoid this CD!

4 out of 5 stars Not his best but it's not terrible............2001-05-30

Ok, I'll admit it. I actually like most of Neil's 80s stuff. Dunno what that says about me! Life isn't like a normal crazy horse record because the loud guitars aren't always present. However, the tunes are good which is what matters. The reason I took a star off was the 80s production where the drums sound totally flat and synthesisers are in most of the tracks. Sometimes this can be good but not always. Mideast Vacation is a good track and Around The World has the kind of savage guitars next seen on 'Don't Cry' off Freedom. Inca Queen is a bit slow but still quite cool. The rest of the tracks go along without really making a fuss. It does sound as though the album is there because one was needed. However, if you ignore the fact that this is Neil Young and put it next to other 80s records, it does come out looking good. It's just that we're used to something a bit more immediate from Neil. As another reviewer said, if you are a fan, you'll get this sooner or later, and I don't think that you'll totally regret it.

4 out of 5 stars life.......2000-03-16

I'm new to Niel Young I've basicly only heard Harvest and this title "Life" and all i can say is Wow! I've read some of the other reviews of Mr. Young's work and if the reviewers only rate this as so-so I can"t wait to experiance the rest of Mr. Youngs work.

5 out of 5 stars Jason Howard does the Hollywood musical--and very well!!.......2000-10-30

This is an amazing CD. I recommend it especially for those who love Hollywood and Broadway musicals of the 1940's and 50's like "Oklahoma", "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". Jason Howard is a wonderfully talented baritone whose singing rivals that of Howard Keel and Gordon MacRae, whose songs he sings on this disc. Every song is well done, and sung with appropriate feeling. Though recorded in a studio, you'd think that "Anything You Can Do," from "Annie Get Your Gun" was from a live theatrical performance, there is so much zest in the interaction between Howard and his female partner. The selections from "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" are particularly welcome, as they are seldom recorded. I can't praise this disc enough!

15)"On My Own" - Kaho Shimada
16)"Tell Me It's Not True" - Stephanie Lawrence of Blood Brothers

These are all great songs but I don't think the best singers were chosen to represent them. But they are all wonderful and enjoyable tracks taken right off the cast album of each of their shows.
