5 out of 5 stars One of the best Liszt CD's you can own.......2006-08-19

I echo what the reviewer below me says and repeat, "Where ARE the rave reviews" for this? This is probably one of the greatest Liszt CD's you can have. The virtuosic performance and wonderful interpretations from Leslie Howard are worth the price alone, but the music... god this music is incredible. Liszt's genius and proficiency in composition must be admired when you hear what he does with simple melodies or themes from operas. The originality and beautifully crafted paraphrases, not to mention the meticulous transcriptions, are simply breathtaking.

Liszt takes us through dramatic storms, rousing waltzes, terrifying marches, lamenting hymns, romantic songs, and brooding worlds of music. The unique melodies that Liszt augments with the piano has to be heard. These pieces just as great and musically complex as his other piano works. Why aren't more pianists reviving these fantasies on the concert stage?

Where to start here... I have to comment on each work because there is not one piece here that should be overlooked! Each work here is exceptionally amazing and masterful. The transcription of the "Der Freischutz" overture is dramatic, powerful and memorable. "Reminiscences of Don Juan" speaks for itself, but as for the interpretation by Howard, I'm afraid it's not the best. I much prefer Bolet's. Verdi's "Aida" paraphrase is remarkably beautiful and potent in its melodies. The transcription of Tchaikovsky's "Polonaise from Eugene Onegin," is cheerful and brilliant. The march from Glinka's "Russlan and Ludmilla" is a perfect menacing concoction on the piano through Liszt's fingers with a devilishly awesome theme.

Most of all, the paraphrase of Handel's "Sarabande and Chaconne" is the most beautiful original piano work I've heard in years. That sad and mournful theme that Liszt plays with endless variations can move you to tears. Liszt picked one theme from a Handel opera and turned it into something as profound and moving as a Beethoven adagio and even more heart-felt than a Chopin nocturne. The transcription of Berlioz' "Benvenuto Cellini" is glorious and enticing; a testament to Liszt's transcribing abilities. And then Howard encores the listener on this first CD one last time with that catchy melody from the waltz in "Gounod's Faust." It's like any Mephisto Waltz Liszt ever composed and thrills the ear with its impish tempo and embellished Romantic sound.

On the second CD, the music only gets better! Howard gives one of the best executions of the Love-Death scene of "Tristan and Isolde." Those tender Wagner melodies on the piano which rise into a crescendo sound otherwordly on the piano and through Liszt's transcription. The wall of sound that builds, followed by the climax of crashes and wails on the piano sends chills up the spine. Howard plays it with such passion and touch. This is probably the only evidence one needs to realize Liszt was a genius with the piano.

The "Reminiscences of Lucia de Lammermoor" is another example of Liszt's prolific ability to make the piano speak and sing. More significantly, Liszt summons such darkness and tension in the marche funebre part; you're hearing a phenomenal piano composition here. Ernst's "Tony" is another stunning transcription by Liszt; the dynamics and craft of this transcription makes for an excellent piano piece. One of the greatest pieces on here though must go to the Paraphrases on Meyerbeer's "L'Africaine." The first one, especially, is beyond anything I've heard on the piano. Those first tragic chords from hell make way for a gentle melody of heaven. The entire piece rises and falls into a sea of heroic and virtuosic music; it simply speaks for itself of how good it is. The second paraphrase is original and uplifting, and of a whole different emotion than the previous one. By now, after you hear all of these fantasies and transcriptions you begin to realize how much the piano was like a bodily organ to Liszt; just as we can speak with our tongue in many gradations and accents, so can Liszt demonstrate any emotion, any subtle feeling or idea onto the piano.

Lastly, the Three pieces on Themes by Auber are not that noteworthy, but have their elegant and beautiful moments. The last piece on the second CD, the Reminiscences of Norma is another masterpiece beside the Reminiscences of Don Juan. However, I again prefer Bolet's more impassioned and thoughtful performance; Howard is ok, but not the best at exposing the magnificence and spirituality of this piece.

Bottom line: Any Liszt lover who has not heard these or does not own this must get it now! This is some of the best music of Liszt and it astounds me that this music has almost been dormant until Howard's discovery. It is superior music that proves Liszt was the most musical and original composer of his time. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Where Are The Rave Reviews ? This is Incredible.......2005-04-28

This is a treat for opera fans and fans of classical piano. Franz Liszt loved the opera- a medium which is at heart musical and he felt inspired to transcribe operatic music for piano, probably out of his personal passion for opera and as a way for the middle-class folk of Europe who could play piano (and men and women did those days) to entertain in their homes. This is a vast collection of his best opera-to-piano transcriptions. The pianist last name Howard is a virtuoso, too bad he is'nt that well-known. He is playing piano music which is really quite difficult to execute. Liszt made the piano into an orchestra in itself and composed symphonic transcriptions of Beethoven and Berlioz. This is a rare and miraculous recording album and I feel that every fan of classical music and opera ought to own it.

The excerpts here, with some variations by Liszt's part, include Mozart's Don Giovanni, Verdi's Aida (the Finale) Webber's Die Freeschutz, Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin- the Polonaise, Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, Isolde's Liebestod, Berlioz' Benvenuto Cellini, music of Auber, Gounod's Faust (the Waltz) and Bellini's Norma among others. This is worth the price. The music is clear, crisp, beautiful and transcendent. Do not miss your chance of owning this glorious music, which if you are musically inclined, you can play on your own home. Opera on piano is great recital music.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-01-04

Francisco de Penalosa (1470-1528). His music is most preserved in Hispanic or Portuguese manuscripts. It is reasonable to suppose that the considerable body of his music, six masses, six Magnificats, sets of Lamentations, various mass movements, Office hymns and a variety of motets date mainly from an active composing period of some twenty years in Aragonese court circle.
These motets, some with liturgical texts(for example:'Pater noster' and 'Ave regina'), others devotional like'Adoro te',extraliturgical funerary, such as 'Versa est in luctum','over-the-top' late medieval hyperbole (O Domina sanctissima), exaggerated bloodiness (Precor te), all 22 of them, have not a note of lively rejoicing. Yet, within each, even the very few that are a little dull and awkward, there is a tremendous variety. The textures and the sonorities , the mixtures of sharp declamation, soft slow chords and soaring melismas ,are varied endlessly and mixed from piece to piece within an individual motet.
This recording is recommended as an anthology to be sampled rather than always heard end to end.
The Pro Cantione Antiqua, with its all male voices, to my thinking ,is the best group possible for recording this type of music. Bruno Turner has done a superb job of pulling this all together. The singers are skilled having excellent diction, beautiful tone quality, perfect harmonic balance and proper emotional investment. The group is comprised of the following outstanding singers: Michael Chance ,Timothy Penrose(countertenors)-James Griffett, Ian Partridge (tenors)-Stephen Roberts (baritone) and Michael George, Adrian Peacock (basses).

Leslie Howard has done it again: he's unveiled and championed some of Liszt's best music, his operatic fantasies and transcriptions. And Howard's repertoire here, combined with Hyperion's outstanding recording quality has made for a miraculous CD. I do not embellish my words when I say the music here is some of the richest and finest of Liszt's. Obviously, much of it is music material from other composers, but there are works here that remain clearly as originally conceived and compiled as if they were the sole products of Liszt's mind.

The first CD in this two-disc set is probably the most substantial and powerful showcase of Liszt's most complex and mature efforts with the operatic fantasy as a form. The Illustrations du Prophete from Meyerbeer's opera is an epic three movement work that propels through so many technical eventualities and musical ideas; it is exhilarating, impressive, dramatic and superb music for the piano. Although I'm not at all familiar with Meyerbeer's operas, it's still evident how successful the music becomes through the piano. Howard explains it himself how ingenius the treatment of Meyerbeer's themes are. What becomes noticeable after I began listening to it over and over is the growth and mutation that Liszt puts the themes through, so that the music is almost Liszt's own conception; it's not just borrowed from another composer to use as a basis for a fantasy. The entire three movement fantasy is 40 minutes long (!) and delivers such stirring and memorable music, it will invite repeated listenings.

The masterpiece here which surely deserves a revival today is the Fantasie and Fugue on a theme from Meyerbeer's Le Prophete, known as the "Ad nos, ad salutarem undam." This colossal and monumental work of art, again in three movements and played on two pianos, is one of the greatest and most original compositions Liszt has crafted from another composer's music material. He transforms Meyerbeer's themes to create the most electrifying, beautiful, and staggering piano work I've heard since the Sonata in B minor. The first movement is the heaviest and most breathtaking sound I've heard on two pianos. It's a fuse between Bach on steroids and Liszt on cocaine with its combination of phenomenal counterpoint and virtuosic flare; easily superior to any Busoni or Godowsky effort.

The Adagio that follows is the most tranquil and exquisite music of such angelic beauty; it moves me like only something from late Beethoven would. It's hard to believe what Liszt is capable of creating on the piano. Just previously he roared with clamor and rage in the fantasy, and now this tender and delicate adagio floats into the air with such warmth. At times the music becomes a Romantic ballade, and then all of a sudden like an introspective hymn. This is the precusor to Liszt's later endeavors to create the softest and most sublime piano music. Just when you become seduced and expect even more heavenly moments, Liszt says, "nuh-uh" and crashes fortissimo into the most formidable and hair-raising fugue of the entire Romantic piano. It simply must be heard to be believed.

The music on the second CD evokes just as much enthusiasm from me. The Donizetti transcription/paraphrase have much to offer with the sonorities and emotions that come through on the piano. However, the majority of music on this second CD consists of Wagner transcriptions, but they all have their merits and unique moments. The Pilgrim's Chorus is a sure crowd-pleaser. Liszt's fantasy on Mosonyi's Szep Ilonka is another note-worthy piece here with a cheerful and energetic roller-coaster ride of music. It would be daft to remark on each piece but I felt it necessary to espouse how tremendous and amazing the first CD is, not to mention the surprises and impressive tributes to Wagner found on the second CD.

Bottom line: This is another milestone in Leslie Howard's recordings of Liszt: profound and mesmerizing music that has remained hidden from connoiseurs and amateurs alike. Treat yourself to some of Liszt's most extraordinary music here; you won't find something like this anywhere else. Howard is on a mission to revive those forgotten masterpieces of Liszt just like Ronald Smith did with Charles Valentin Alkan.

5 out of 5 stars Other reviewers seem to have crong CD!!.......2005-01-13

This is a beautiful CD but has nothing to do with pianists and Liszt, as the other two commentators seem to suggest. I suspect this is a misfire in Amazon's system. Be assured that these are beautiful works (Penalosa's dates are c1470-1528) movingly performed by Bruno Turner and his Pro Cantione Antiqua. Obtain and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A revelation!.......2002-04-25

I find that the most interesting and impressive work in this compilation is the Fantasy and Fugue on the "Ad nos, ad salutarem undam" chorale, which (like me) you may already have known in its version for organ. I was surprised by the grandeur it retains in the piano 4-hand version presented here. As Leslie Howard writes in the accompanying notes, it truly is one of Liszt's finest efforts, really in the same class as the B Minor Sonata. Playing and recording quality reflect the same high standards you will find in all of Howard's Liszt series on Hyperion.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing operatic transcriptions.......2000-01-13

The first disc is dedicated to Meyerbeer. Needless to say, Meyerbeer himself was quite impressed. The last track features two piano players. The second disc is distinguished by Liszt's great Wagner transcriptions--the Parsifal is more of a fantasy on that opera, and it's marvelous, as are the other pieces. A really enjoyable set of transcriptions, played superbly by Leslie Howard.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful version of Delius' masterpiece.......2007-06-16

I owned this recording on vinyl and am so glad to see it in CD format. The recording is simply beautiful. The soloists are top quality and the story is well told, with the Walk to the Paradise Garden being the epitome of romance and tragedy. This music needs to be heard, and no less a luminary than Sir Thomas Beecham believed in this composer. I'm not sure that I agree that Delius was totally unique, but he certainly does create his own sound-world and this recording is a wonderful way to enter that world. I highly recommend this recording to those who are just beginning to explore the music of Delius.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB DELIUS OPERA FINALLY ON CD.......2004-05-11

It was some sort of miracle that EMI finally reissued Meredith Davies' recording of Delius' Village Romeo and Juliet on CD. I always knew there was an audio potential in this recording not possible on analog LP (my well-worn Angel LPs, and a very long futile search for the British EMI pressings attest to that). This is simply one of my favorite opera recordings. I prefer it to the Mackerras/Argo digital version of a few years back (the recording that provided the soundtrack to Petr Weigl's film of the opera, now on DVD). Davies employs the revised Tom Hammond version of the sung text - more singable than the version used by Mackerras and printed in the Boosey & Hawkes vocal score. The CD also includes Eric Fenby's discussion on Delius' music (not included in the original Angel LPs). Only one drawback - the complete libretto is not included in the gatefold 2-CD set. I'm willing to overlook that in light of having this wonderful recording back in circulation.

      5 out of 5 stars Schoenberg-Stokoswki: A Vast Architecture in Sound.......2000-10-13

I crusade - inveterately, it seems, and probably vainly, too - on behalf of what the review magazines usually call "archival" or "historical" documents: They mean recordings from prior to 1950 or so made in the era either of electrical registration of the master-copy on acetate or metal discs or of early magnetic-tape preservation of the broadcast or studio performance. (The two eras overlap.) I thus constantly confront the audiophile mentality: "Why would I want to hear those pops and ticks from the lacquer platters, or the static-hiss and low fidelity from antiquated magnetic tapes?" My answer has become resolute and invariable: "The sound captured by engineers with that pre-stereo, pre-solid-state, pre-digital equipment is certainly different from what modern ears expect, but it is not inferior." In some cases, indeed, the old recordings, especially the early magnetic tapes from Germany and Holland, yield a sense of natural orchestral sound that no stereo or digital item has ever captured. It's true that stereo, in particular, can enhance a listener's appreciation of certain kinds of music, especially of highly contrapuntal music or, say, of chamber ensemble music. Between Bernstein's Tchaikovsky, however, from the 1960s and Mengelberg's from the 1930s, I'd say it's a toss-up: What will decide a fellow is his judgment of the performance, not of the technical perfection of the registration. All of which brings me to one of the most audacious and successful choral-orchestral recordings ever made: Leopold Stokowski's 1932 (that's right - 1932!) playback version of Arnold Schoenberg's gargantuan, Tristanesque cantata, "Gurrelieder," based on texts by the Danish poet Jens-Peter Jacobson. The reissuing house is Pearl, which specializes in this sort of thing. By Zeus, but this is sprawling, indulgent, harmonically overripe music for soli, chorus and (huge) orchestra! Schoenberg distills everything he had learned from Wagner and Mahler into his great tapestry, which he began around 1900, set aside, and did not complete until 1912. Stokowski, in spoken remarks, calls "Gurrelieder" a specimen of vast "architecture in sound." Now it is Pearl's policy, in distinction to that, say, of Dutton Laboratories, not to fiddle with the sound on the master-documents, except to filter slightly some of the noise from worn platters. Even so, the achievement of the RCA engineers in 1932 will astonish: The orchestral groups are clearly differentiated, the vocal soli sound clearly and the words are audible; the choruses (the real challenge) come through with immediacy and a minimum of distortion. What also manifests itself undeniably is Stokowski's vital commitment to this music. It was Stokowski who gave the North American premiere of Mahler's Eighth Symphony, in Philadelphia, in 1916. We hear the Philadelphians in Schoenberg, too, their velvety strings and their crisp, singing woodwinds. The brass snarl effectively when the score requires it. The tutti passages defy any expectation of what "old" recordings should sound like. Stokowski liked these towering late-Romantic edifices and it tells. Pearl fills out the second disc with two Scriabin items, "The Poem of Ecstasy" and "Prometheus," recorded in the midst of the depression with reduced forces but worth getting to know nonetheless. The real prize is Schoenberg.

Louis Kentner was a pioneer in Liszt's music and Bartok too. His recordings about Liszt in the middle of the sixties were a must reference for everyone. Still now, his sound is very original, and together with Sandor and Nyireghihazi this trio are the superlative level im pianism in the first half of XX century.
This recordings has a lot of virtues.
First at all the Bartok no. 3 is extraordinary. Historically it's a collector item because it was the European premiere of this concerto.
The recording is widely worthy. Boult conducts Bartok with authority and a very close rapport with Kentner.
If you want to get the four best recordings of the third concerto, just try with this one, Sandor Ormandy from the forties and Sandor Gielen from the fifties, and finally one very hard to find recording with Anne Fisher and Fricsay from 1955.
Listening his Liszt you'll find a convincing and powerful color. Kentner is not well known in United States, because he decided to live in England, but if you are able to get all what you can from this original artist, just do it.
