Superb Box Set!!!.......2007-07-28

I won't bore you with a lengthy review as others have done. These remasters sound better than the originals...do not pay attention to those complaining of compression. They probably have a crappy system that they are playing it out of. I definitely own some remasters that have no improvements over the originals, but these are not among them. The CD's sound better and clearer than the previous issues. I compared the previous with these new reissues and there is a significant difference and improvement. The 5.1 DTS DVD's are amazing!!! The bonus features such as the new interviews as well as old concert footage makes it even more of a treat. The bonus disc that includes the b-sides are terrific(and it also includes both cd and dvd versions as well plus interview). All I can say is the Genesis took their fans into major consideration when they release this box set. I hope the other groups that I love will take a lesson from this package...it's really great...totally worth the money.

Superb edition even without the SACD layer.......2007-07-25

For a Genesis fan this product is a MUST, even for non-so professional ears like mine, the 5.1 mix is really good. It's a sad that, for price reasons ( I think) RHINO decided to exclude the SACD layer of this records, wich I really like to hear.
Is a great experience to re-discover classic albums as Duke, ...and then there where, etc. Veeery refreshing.

Essential for any Genesis fan .......2007-07-17

I was 14 when Genesis' "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" came out, and my music world was never quite the same after that. When Peter Gabriel left, it was quite the shock and it looked like that might be it for Genesis. But instead, the band surprised everyone (including themselves) by delivering what is arguably their finest album ever ("A Trick of the Tail") and would march on for many years, taking lots of left and right turns. I, for one, was quite taken aback with the turn taken with "Duke" and "Abacab", neither of which I ever bought. Until now.

"Genesis 1976-1982" (6 CDs, 6 DVDs) is extraordinary on so many levels. I'm not going into a dissection of each of the 5 studio albums from that period, except to say that having now listened to "Duke" and "Abacab" from start to finish (and with the benefit of 25+ years hindsight), I can see what the band was trying to do. Each of the albums is now also onto 5.1 Surround Sound, and that sounds absolutely amazing, if you have the right audio set-up at home (which I happen to have). The 6th CD "Extra Tracks" (13 tracks, 59 min.) collects odds-and-ends from various EPs, B-sides and other miscellaneous "lost" songs from that period. The colletion sounds a bit disjointed because, well it IS disjointed, although I love "Inside and Out", with a furious Tony Banks solo towards the end, wow, and better yet is "It's Yourself", which really shoulda been included on the "Winds & Wuthering" album, just outstanding.

The real pay-off on this set are the various visuals added onto the DVDs. Let's start with the absolute best of the whole bunch: a 45 min. concert from 1976 (on the "Trick of the Tail" DVD), with (surpisingly) excellent audio and video and stunning tracks like "Fly on a Windshield", "Entangled" and "Los Endos" (I saw Genesis on their 1977 tour and this brings back many memories). Equally good is a 45 min. excerpt from a 1980 London show (on the "Duke" DVD) with killer performances like "In the Cage", "Dance on a Volcane" and again "Los Endos"). Also not to be missed is a 40 min. 1978 BBC documentary called "Three Dates with Genesis" (on the "And Then There Were Three" DVD), where the BBC reporter follows the band on 3 shows (Germany, Holland and then Knebworth). The real eye opener is of course to see a behind the scenes look at a big festival like Knebworth in 1978 (admission price: 5.50 British Pounds!), it's like watching a time capsule. Each of the 5 studio albums comes with a "2007 reissue interview", which lasts about 15-20 min. each and is quite interesting the first time around. This box-set also collects the many videos the band did, which are quite enjoyable (I remember seeing the "Robbery, Assault & Battery" video as a kid on Belgian TV in 1976; hadn't seen it since). Last but not least, the set contains a nice 48 page booklet with great liner notes.

I can't emphasize enough how estatic I am with this reissue. I already was tempted to buy this when Best Buy ran it with $30 off, but then when I saw that Amazon sells it at FIFTY PERCENT OFF, I immediately jumped on it and ordered it here. Best decision in a long time. This box set is absolutely essential for Genesis fans from the 1970s. As for Genesis fans from the latter era, give this a look and listen. Chances are you'll be stunned, in the best possible way.

Fully Utilized Re-mastering Techniques!.......2007-07-14

As it is with most avenues that Genesis have journeyed down over their 40- year career, this first boxed set to be released out of the eventual three, is innovative, refreshing, and thought- provoking. Just with the knowledge that this 5- album, 12-disc collection is only the first of three re-mastering sessions is enough to stir emotion for several weeks upon end. One could never think that just one group of artists could have the vast history that Genesis posses.
Indeed, this set documents their Beginning and Empirical stages with grandeur like only Hackett, Collins, Rutherford, and Banks could.
I quite liked seeing Steven Hackett in the first two "Review Documentaries" for the albums "A Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering". These alone, are worth having the DVDs. All five Review Documentaries are fantastically insightful. With interviews with Hackett, Collins, Banks, and Rutherford; how could they not be?!
There are plenty of other extras on these DVDs, of course. All five DVDs contain photographs of the touring programs from the coinciding tour that took place with the given album. All contain at least 2 videos from that period. As you reach the Duke and ABACAB DVDs, you get actual music videos as we know them to be currently. Although, it must be noted that the "concert film" for A Trick of the Tail and the "three dates with Genesis" for Wind and Wuthering are the true gems out of all five DVDs. Even the interesting and often comical videos for the ABACAB period don't quite match up to these.

Then, there are the DTS 5.1/ Dolby Digital re-masterings that are found on the DVDs. Why American versions of the CDs do not contain the SACD, I've no idea. They are re-mastered in Dolby Stereo, however; giving the records a much more lush and coherent sound.
A special note to those who are playing the music videos on the DVDs : You must select the type of sound quality that your DVD player/ sound-system is capable of. If you do not have the ability to play DTS 5.1 audio but you select that audio, the sound will be absent from the music videos. There are two instances where you are given the chance to select the type of audio you want. If you fall victim to not having the capabilities of playing the DTS 5.1, do not freak out or think that the DVDs are damaged; simply select the Dolby Digital audio selection instead of the DTS. Other than that, you should be smooth sailing for weeks to come!

There really is no need to get into how first-class the records, themselves, are. If you're a fan of Genesis, you know that these are simply some of the most brilliantly written tunes of modern music. All five albums express emotions that inspire all who listen. The musicianship that is exposed by every song, by all four members of the band can't be compared with. This isn't even mentioning the voice of Phil Collins; a man with one of the most distinctive singing voices in music history. Not to mention that Banks and Rutherford occasionally offer their vocal talents on a few songs.
The last aspects worth significant mention are the "Extra Tracks" CD and DVD. This is the same format as the five conventional albums: the CD is re-mastered with Dolby Stereo (not SACD or DTS) and the DVD holds the DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround sound. As for the songs themselves, there could be an entirely new record based off the vitality of these songs. Many of these tracks were B-sides to ABACAB singles and Duke singles. Some of the others can be found on the 3X3 EP. The remaining can be found on their other EP from this time period.

Superior sound quality, distinguished song composition, admired presentation, and indisputable talent has always been the name of the game for Genesis. It's magnificent to see a band of artist who still maintains these traits after 40 years.

Nothing this ingenious could be rated anything less them 5 stars!

Wow.

I'm 45. I've been a Genesis fan since I was 15. I've been really frustrated by the 'lack of attention to detail' of the last group of Genesis so-called "Remasters" (the absolute WORST packaging, including incorrect liner notes, and really ugly boxes on the back of EVERY Jewel case with the track listing -- yeah, some art work -- AND the title track of "The Lamb Lies Down...." actually FADED in, like on all other CD versions of the song, including the Japanese mini-lp version... good grief, anyone who knows the friggin' song KNOWS this has a hard beginning on the piano.)

OK, I haven't really studied the liner notes yet, but I can absolutely say that the packaging is a whole lot better for the 5 albums in here -- complete art work faithful to the original LP releases, including complete lyrics ("abacab" included). Even the CD labels are faithful to the original releases (The US domestic releases have ATCO/ATLANTIC labels -- I would have preferred The Great Charisma Label actually, and suspect the UK/European discs were pressed with them instead). This package DOES contain a 6th disc, with 13 B-sides and EP tracks recorded between 1976 and 1981.

But The Thing is, of course, the music. So what about the music?

I want to say right away that I haven't heard every track in here yet. But of what I've heard, these recordings sound fantastic. Davis clearly went back TO THE MASTER TAPES this time, and these are not only remastered, but they are remixed. For example, so far, of ALL the tracks that fade out (for example, "Wot Gorilla", "A Trick Of The Tail", "Inside And Out") that I've heard, they are all slightly extended. And there are differences in the sounds at the end of these tunes (you don't hear that decending tone so prominently at the end of "Wot Gorilla" as on the original mix, and the fade is extended just so nicely -- and on "Trick Of The Tail", again, a nice extended fade, and you don't hear Collins "grunts" at the end as prominently).

Of course, as a previous review has stated, "Submarine" is the full-length B-side single version with the hard ending, and "It's Yourself" comes complete with an extra verse (sometimes heard on some really bad-sounding bootlegs). And at least they included "Me & Virgil" and "Match Of The Day" (omitted from the Archive 2 Box) -- which also, I might add, sound just great!

My ONLY complaint (so far) would be that for some reason, "It's Yourself" fades, like on the Archive 2 Box. I have the Italian single version; this song actually has a really sweet hard ending, and it doesn't make sense that someone would want to fade out the song when a perfect ending exists on the master tape. But that's what they did. Go figure. What I'd LIKE to have is that ending tacked onto this remastered version.

Given that one complaint, I gotta say they finally got it right with this release -- and I can't wait for them to put out The Gabriel Years -- if the master tapes have been properly stored, there's no telling how these will sound (HOPEfully, they'll fix it so "The Lamb..." starts like the LP does ... withOUT the crackle).

Founded in the late '60s in Surrey, England, Genesis rose out of the ashes of earlier bands formed by schoolmates Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Anthony Phillips (who departed after 1969's Trespass, the album providing the final track on this stellar retrospective). Now that Genesis has decided to do the (take your pick: dreaded/hoped for) reunion tour this year, starting in Europe shortly, coming to the US later this year, it's time to revisit the only compilation that spans the entire Genesis studio catalogue.

"Genesis Platinum Edition" (3 CDs; 40 tracks; 235 min.) tracks the band's history in reverse chronological order, with one exception: the title track of 1997's "Calling All Stations", which is stuck at the end of CD1 and sounds totally out of place--for many reasons. But for that song, this covers Genesis 1971-1991, and it's amazing what these guys put out in 20 years, and how the band evolved. This compilation is a decent attempt to cover it all. CD1 (16 tracks, 78 min.) covers the band's most successfull years, and many of these tracks are also found on the "Turn It On Again - The Hits" compilation. Am I the only one to think that the songs from 1986's "Invisible Touch" album have aged very poorly? It makes me cringe to listen to them. (Note: "Tonight Tonight Tonight" comes in an edited, short version here.) CD2 (15 tracks, 77 min.) tracks the intermediary years and I was surprised how good these songs resonate still. Check out for example "Abacab" (in the full album version, thankfully), and "In That Quiet Earth/Afterglow", but shamefully "One for the Vine" is missing, one of the band's best tracks ever (and perhaps the best song Tony Banks ever penned). CD3 (9 tracks, 80 min.) covers the Peter Gabriel years (1971-1975), and while I did not mind (and at times greatly enjoyed) Genesis' evolution to a mainstream successful band, this era is still the most compelling for me. Check out "The Cinema Show" and "Supper's Ready" (both here in full length) if you're not familiar with them, you'll be blown away, I promise you.

There is no arguing with the economic value of this compilation: 4 hours of music for $20, you can't beat that. The packaging is a different story: skimpy liner notes, and the booklet is misprinted with pages out of order... I have seen Genesis in concert only once, in Brussels on the 1977 tour for "Wind & Wuthering" and I remember it as if it was yesterday. Unforgettable. While I know that this year's reunion tour is probably a money-grabbing thing, I nevertheless do plan on seeing them when they come to Columbus in September, for nostalgic reasons if nothing else.

What the Turn it On Again collection should`ve been.............2007-05-14

This is, without a shadow of a doubt THE best collection of my favorite band of all time. Disc 1 is what the TIOA CD shoulda been. Not just pure hit machine pop but some great prog like Home by Sea & Mama COMPLETLEY UNEDITED. Also has a hard to find piece called Paperlate remixed.-5 stars. Disc 2 has classics like ABACAB & Turn it on Again totally remixed. it ain`t Genesis at its best but its good.-4.5 stars. Disc 3 is a masterpiece, prog rock greatness with Suppers Ready! Nuff said.-6 stars. steller.

Great musicianship, but can you - honestly - take Phil Collins seriously?.......2007-05-11

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Peter Gabrial, Steve Hackett (later of "GTR," a band Creem Magazine referred to as "SHT"), Tony Banks, Chester Thompson, Mike Rutherford (he of "The Living Years" fam ), and...and...and...Phil Collins. EXCELLENT drummer! But WHY "push the envelope," seeing how annoying he can be? Oh well, "buy the ticket, take the ride," I guess...

A Brilliant Masterpiece.......2007-07-17

'Selling England By The Pound' is indeed a brilliant masterpiece from beginning to end, and is one of the finest albums produced from the progressive rock movement that swept the music scene in the 1970s. The album is "bookended" by the building rocker "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight" and "The Aisle of Plenty", a reprise of the opening track. "Selling England By The Pound" definitely has a medieval-English feel that holds its own charming presence throughout the entire album. The album starts out with Peter Gabriel a cappella, with Steve Hackett making his way in on guitar and Tony Banks making a powerful entrance on acoustic piano. Before you know it, you're smack-dab in the middle of a damn good, solid rock piece. "I Know What I Like" is a rather humorous take on an interpretation of the cover art (according the the album sleeve), and if you listen closely, you can hear Gabriel laughing as he sings through the second chorus. "Firth of Fifth" opens with a Banks piano solo, and is actually one of his shining moments as his excellent piano work is a central figure in the song. "More Fool Me" is one of the first songs to not feature Peter as the lead singer, and is an opportunity to hear a very young Phil Collins at the microphone as the lead vocalist. "The Battle of Epping Forest" is a progressive rock epic from start to finish- complex, lengthy lyrics, numerous tempo changes, not to mention clocking in at almost twelve minutes long. The song is a milestone for the band in that it proved Genesis could stand up to the other progressive rock bands of the time such as Yes and King Crimson. My personal favorite on the album is the diverse soundscape "The Cinema Show". The song begins with Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford on their 12-string guitars, picking their way through a beautiful intro after which Peter leads off with his unique style of sining about a modern day Romeo and Juliet... later in the song, a keyboard solo in the unusual 7/8 time performed by Banks signifies that the song isn't quite over yet and there's plenty left. I own many of Genesis' albums and this is one I continuously keep going back to-- it's Genesis at their best.

Hackett's Monument.......2007-06-02

I consider this album as one of Genesis's best, but strange enough I play it less frequently than for example Trick or Abacab. This is because you have to really sit down and listen to appreciate this masterpiece. Its greatness comes essentially from Steve Hackett, who produced here a few of the best guitar solos in the history of modern music. He never reached this superb level before and after Selling. Hey Steve, where are you ?

Arguably the Gabriel era's finest hour 34 years on.......2007-06-01

Genesis' fifth studio effort Selling England by the Pound was released in October of 1973.
By 1973, Genesis (which comprised of singer Peter Gabriel, bass player Mike Rutherford, keyboard player Tony Banks, drummer Phil Collins and guitarist Steve Hackett) had developed a cult following and respect with rock fans. However, the band's commercial aspects in the US were not great as Buddah Records (who distributed Charisma in the US) did nothing for the band. Charisma changed distributors Stateside from Buddah to Atlantic (which was home to Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Cream and many others) and this gave the band some confidence to record its next album as they were now at the same home as Zeppelin and The Stones. Would Selling England By the Pound be a classic or would the band fall from grace. Read on and find out.
We open the album with Gabriel singing the acapella intro to "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight" which told the tale of the demise of "good old England" and the rise of commercial, modern England. Gabriel's brilliant vocals and lyrics are matched by brilliant guitar work of Steve and Mike and additional musicianship from Tony and Phil as the song becomes a superb climactic rock number after its soft start. Next is the band's first UK Top 20 hit "I Know What I Like". This piece tells the story of a lawnmower sitting on the porch which was one of the band's first tracks to feature a synthesizer and a great piece. Next is the majestic "Firth of Fifth". It begins with a piano solo by Banks and launches into a grand epic. The song features a flute solo, a synthesizer solo and one of Hackett's most memorable guitar solos. The first half closed with "More Fool Me" which was Phil's second lead vocal with Genesis. A nice break-up song written by Mike and Phil.
The album's second half starts with "The Battle of Epping Forest" which is an epic about a gang fight with references back to medieval England and excellent muscianship by the Genesis members. Great piece. Next is one of Hackett's classic guitar pieces "After the Ordeal". Next is the epic "The Cinema Show" which is one of the band's best epics. From the opening 12-string guitar doodle, you are then thrown head first into a beautiful song for six minutes. Then, the song breaks into a superb synthesizer solo section which is hard to describe. We close the album with "Aisle of Plenty" which is somewhat of a reprise to the album's opening track but a nice piece nevertheless.
Selling England By the Pound gave Genesis their first crack in the US Top 100 album charts peaking at #70 in 1974 paving the way for more success in the future and eventually reached Gold status in US sales. It reached #3 in their native UK. Sales aside, Genesis were maturing and becoming a band to be reckoned with.

Not much to say about this album - you HAVE to listen to it youreself.

Surfice it to say that i have been listening to this masterpiece for over 20 years now and i always get something new out of it everytime i hear it, and thats at least 3 times a week.

This music makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end and brings tears to my eye with its sheer beauty, and the pleasure it gives me. No other album has ever had such an emotional effect on me.

Give it a try - it is sublime!

Absolutely the best Genesis album........2007-04-24

Anyone who thinks Invisible Touch was the zenith of Genesis' career is either unfamiliar with the Peter Gabriel era of the band or just plain cracked. This album is so ridiculously underrated that is makes me physically ill. Okay maybe that was a tad dramatic but drama is a given when it comes to Genesis. The only weak track on this album is the one sung by Phil Collins. It seems really out of place. Anyway, this is probably as ambitious and experimental as progressive rock can get and still be accessible. If you are unfamiliar with progressive rock Selling England is a good place to start.

The Path not Taken.......2007-06-16

This is the greatest achievement of the band Genesis. SinceTrespass they had been building toward a musical monument like this. And here they construct it.

I listen to the album now with deep regret. "Lamb" shows the innovative directions the band was going in. Back in NYC anticipates electro-rock (like Gary Numan) by 4 or 5 years; the Eno-esque soundscapes, while dated now, show a desire to experiment; the intense complexity of the songs is offset, unlike in their prior work, by a solid foundation of bass and drums, driving rhythms (just listen to the bass and drums in In the Cage); the songs are generally shorter and more varied in tone and style.

What could have been had they continued down this path ... such remarkable possibilities unrealized. But the creative chemistry of the original line-up was lost when Gabriel left and then, a few years later, Hackett. Genesis survived the transition into the 1980s, but only by selling themselves by the pound. They collapsed into a pop band.

For me, then, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, represents the apogee of the Genesis genius, a signpost to a path not taken.

This record is just truly great. I always wanted to hear this record, because I always enjoyed the concept albums of Rush. Because I have always liked Genesis around the time of Phil Collins, I wanted to give Peter Gabriel a chance. This record is considered his magnum opus so I gave it a shot. It really is as good as everyone said. If you like Genesis or the idea of concept albums, get this CD. It really is a great one.

This is a terrific album and the whole experience has already been thoroughly documented in these reviews. Top-notch musicianship, daring lyrics, addictive hooks, innovative concept, the whole bit.

I've read lots of speculation about The Lamb's plot, but I think one possible theory has been overlooked. I believe it's given away in the second verse of the first song on the album:

... Metal motion comes in bursts,
But the gas station can quench that thirst
Suspension cracked on unmade road
The truckers eyes read Overload
And out of the subway,
Rael Imperial Aerosol Kid
Exits into daylight, spraygun hid,
And the lamb lies down on Broadway

A few seconds after the introduction of Rael, I believe he's immediately killed by this out of control truck with cracked suspension careening out from an alleyway, and lying dead on Broadway his soul is reborn and sent on this quest through some sort of "purgatory" (?). The album documents Rael's path to salvation with reflections on society, his own life and adventures in the afterlife. Rael has become the sacrificial lamb of societal decay, and in the end he finally does right by regaining his own lost love of self and others - at last discovering the "it." that life and compassion are made of.

One of the most amazing aspects of this album is that it allows a unique experience for each listener. The story lends itself to endless speculation and countless interpretations so it never really gets old. The lyrics are just vague enough and the music layered enough to constantly re-discover it. Once you "get it" it will haunt you for a very long time. Simply an amazing accomplishment.

Buy it, listen to it, listen to it five more times, then try to put it down. I dare you.

The best post-Gabriel Genesis of the 1970s.......2007-07-17

If you are just getting into Genesis and are looking for your first Collins -era Genesis CD, this is the album. Although Genesis lost a powerful creative force with the departure of Peter Gabriel in 1975, the 1976 album 'A Trick of The Tail' let the world know that Genesis could survive as a leading progressive rock band without the presence of its former lead singer and extravagant stage performer. From the opening lingering guitar notes on 'Dance On A Volcano' to the rhythmic pounding bass on the mainstay instrumental 'Los Endos', 'A Trick of The Tail' witholds much of the same artistic musicianship that was rampant throughout the band prior to Gabriel's departure. Phil Collins steps into the spotlight as the new lead vocalist while maintaining his post at the drum kit in the studio and on stage, as well during this time period. Sounding "more like Gabriel that Gabriel did" according to some, this was Collins' moment as he filled the lead spot. 'Entangled' features a brilliant mixture of layered acoustic guitars that blends into a climactic synthesizer-Mellotron solo with Mike Rutherford filling out the remainder of the sound spectrum with his bass pedals. The title track was also made into one of the first music videos the band ever produced. 'Ripples' is a beautiful song whose central theme is growing older. All in all, 'A Trick of The Tail' is a masterpiece that sums up the musicianship and talent of Phil, Mike, Steve, and Tony and in my opinion is the best Genesis album produced in the late 1970s after Gabriel left... and very well may be one of the best Genesis albums period.

Sometimes you have favorite albums, and other times you have "personal" favorite albums. Albums that you like for personal reasons.

Genesis A Trick of the Tail is one of those albums. During the Peter Gabriel years (which were fantastic, by the way) they never really had an album that touched me on a certain unexplainable level.

I don't know what it is, but something about the music Genesis was making in the year 1976 really made me grow attached to them. The atmosphere of this album is extraordinary- so extraordinary it's hard to put into words. It's like every song was written with the intention of allowing the listener to hold on to their childhood years.

From "Dance on a Volcano" all the way to "Los Endos", I get the feeling the band members recorded this music with a certain spiritual meaning that can't be found anywhere else, from any other artist. It's about remembering and cherishing how innocent and adventurous life was as a child, and about not EVER taking those special years for granted. Just because we're adults doesn't mean we have to stop appreciating the way life was for us during those precious early years of our lives.

Hey, I know what I say above sounds corny, but when music sounds THIS good and THIS important, I get the feeling it was meant to be appreciated on a personal level. If you were a child and had a certain extremely powerful believe in God, the music on this album will probably take you back to those special years of your life.

"Ripples" is such a great song. I especially love the instrumental middle section. It puts a strong picture in my head of what it's like to die, and then floating above the solar system and reaching heaven. Something about the way the guitars are played in such a way where you can picture shooting stars surrounding you, and the piano tinkling really makes you think about a build up to something important. Great, great music.

It's progressive rock played with a lot of meaning. I strongly disagree with people who say rock and roll should always be short and sweet and to the point, because otherwise an album like this would never have been created. It's spiritual atmosphere is something that will never grow old, no matter how bad the worlds gets, or how many things go wrong in our lives. This album will always be here for us.

On another personal note, let me say before my mother died, she was a big Genesis fan. I know why now. This music reminds me of her, reminds me of heaven, and makes me think about life. For that, it doesn't get any better.

19th century atmosphere pop songs - amazing !.......2007-06-02

I can't find any weak songs on this record. The first side (on the original record, that is) with the superb array Entangled, Skunk and Mad Man Moon it is almost as good as side 2 of Abbey Road...

Genesis near its peak.......2007-05-03

A Trick of the Tail is one of my favorite Genesis albums, despite leading the band on its first baby steps toward bombast and mediocrity after (due to?) the departure of Peter Gabriel. But the musical ideas at this point in the group's history are still rich and under glorious exploration. Songs have very different and stunning textures, led by Phil Collins' strong percussion, with often great composition by Rutherford and Banks and strong collaboration all around. Trick of the Tail is near the peak of Genesis' musicial brilliance.

Foxtrot marked a decisive point in Genesis's career. An emerging art-rock band who were building up a growing cult following with a busy touring schedule, this album was an artistic and commercial landmark; it was their first album to chart. Including the classic "Watcher of the Skies" and Peter Gabriel's whimsically compassionate slice of life, "Get 'Em Out by Friday," the album's highlight is the ambitious sidelong epic "Supper's Ready." Comprising seven linked subsections, it was inspired apparently by a frightening experience where Gabriel's wife, Jill, felt she was possessed, and is a story of two lovers and the struggle between good and evil. Certainly it was the most innovative and entertaining piece the band had produced to date. The relatively rough production values could be seen as either detracting somewhat from the impact of the album or adding a pleasantly rough edge to what might otherwise be a somewhat prim sound. --James Swift

This is a seminal record by the original Genesis - before they descended to pop/tatty end of things. Superb instrumentation, good use of backing musicians, fabulous, challenging lyrics. Seems ageless.

Not as unforgettable as Pink Floyd's "Echoes".......2007-06-08

There are a smorgasbord of prog-rock bands out there. Rush is one of them, but they are terrible. Pink Floyd is one of them, and no doubt they are the best. Genesis is one of them, but they are there. Their progressive music is so-so, difficult to listen to. Not too much of great tunes in "Foxtrot", though, but it delivers a poignant "Horizons". "Supper's Ready" is the one song that could have improved greatly. It changes drastically into different tunes and to this day, I've forgotten how it sounds. I remember "Echoes" because it works slowly from quiet sounds to dramatic points. That's a note. Genesis, work out the stuff a better way. Peter Gabriel must have pleaded for nostalgic, forest-fairy music.

It, as with its early sister albums, combines classical themes from all the arts, and is an absolute 'must buy'
This band were amongst the pioneers, if not the leading light in their genre.
Do yourself a favour and explore the inspired genius that was, Genesis.

Genesis' second album from the "classic era" still sounds superb 35 years on.......2007-06-01

Genesis' fourth album Foxtrot was released in October of 1972.
The album came out in a year that arguably prog was at its peak. That was the year that The Moody Blues hit #1 with Seventh Sojourn. ELP gave us the double whammy of Pictures at an Exhibition and Trilogy. Also, Yes gave us two classic out of Fragile and Close to the Edge. Jethro Tull gave us the album length suite Thick As a Brick (which hit #1). Also, Pink Floyd gave us Obscured by Clouds and were recording their masterpiece The Dark Side of the Moon.
It was also in 1972 that Genesis gave us Foxtrot (complete with the cover depicting a woman wearing a fox's head and a red dress). This was the album that saw lead singer Peter Gabriel, keyboard player Tony Banks, bass player Mike Rutherford, drummer Phil Collins and guitarist Steve Hackett refine the sound that they had hinted at on its predecessor, 1971's Nursery Cryme. Foxtrot was also the album that gave the band its first charting success in the UK and helped bring them a following as you will find out why in this review.
We open the album with the epic "Watcher of the Skies" which starts the album off. The piece begins with Banks' swirling mellotron intro and then morphs into a classic Genesis track with superb playing by the Genesis members and Gabriel's vocals just burn here. This piece remains a fan favorite to this day. Next is the nice balladish sounding "Time Table". Some write this beautiful song off as "filler" but is still a great piece. Next is another highlight of the album which is the album's second epic called "Get 'Em Out By Friday". The piece is a bizarre story with superb lyrics from Gabriel and superb music by the band. We conclude the album's first half closed with "Can-Utility and the Coastliners" which was a great song.
Now, the second half of the album starts with "Horizons" which shows why Hackett was arguably Genesis' best guitarist. This classical guitar solo is so superb. Then the album's last piece is the 23 minute "Supper's Ready". This suite is up there with "Tarkus", "Close to the Edge", "Echoes", "2112" and "Thick as a Brick" in greatest long epics. The first part "Lover's Leap" is exceptionally strong with Gabriel's multi-tracked vocals, bizarre lyrics and superb 12-string work from Messieurs Banks, Rutherford and Hackett. Then the suite has a piano solo from Banks which segues into "The Guaranteed Eternal Sanctuary Man" section. Quiet vocals lead into a major key section which has everyone playing (Hackett's lead playing and superb drumming from Collins). The "Ikhnaton and Itsacon and their Band of Merry Men" follows and includes arguably Hackett's guitar solo on a Genesis record. Then this segues into the atmospheric "How Dare I Be So Beautiful" which is dreamy and exquisite. Then we go into the section's classic funny part known as "Willow Farm" which is just wild. All I can see is Peter wearing his flower mask whilst performing it (he got the idea of the flower mask from watching an old British kids show when he was a child). Then after a wild music section we go into the superb "Apocalypse in 9/8" section which has powerful lyrics plus an instrumental part that is amazing. Phil's drumming here is TOP NOTCH and Banks proves why he is the master of the organ. We then segue with bells tolling into the final section called "As Sure as Eggs is Eggs". It starts with a reprise of the music of "Lovers Leap" then morphs into a slowed down reprise of "The Guaranteed Eternal" section. Gabriel sings this part like it was the last piece he would ever sing. It is that great.
Foxtrot would almost reach the UK Top 10 and just missed the American charts but sales notwithstanding, this album is a testament to the classic "prog rock" era of Genesis.

Genesis - Suppers Ready Is A Must Own For Any Fan Of Progressive Rock.......2007-04-06

"Foxtrot" is another winner from the Gabriel led Genesis with it's mix of prog rock, social commentary, and tales of fantasy. The major highlight of this album is a song that many consider to be one of the all time great progressive rock epics "Supper's Ready". The 23 minute track basically covers the biblical book of Revelations as it's subject matter with the return of Christ after the apocalypse. Pretty heady stuff, and in lesser hands this could have been a disaster, but Genesis ultimately produce what may be the ultimate prog rock piece of work. The lyrics, music, and vocals all mesh perfectly on this one and the result is truly stunning. The rest of the album is great as well. It opens with one of the band's all time classics "Watcher Of The Skies". This track was a concert opener for several tours featuring frontman Peter Gabriel in his "batwing" outfit prowling the stage. After all these years the song remains a must listen. "Time Table" follows with it's relatively simple music and lyrics about medieval times. Two songs of biting social commentary follow with "Get `Em Out By Friday", and "Can-Utility And The Coastliners". The remaining track "Horizon's" is a short acoustic guitar instrumental by Steve Hacket that serves as a transition into the epic "Suppers Ready". The music on this disc is all top notch. Collins, Hackett, Banks and Rutherford are all at the top of their game here with outstanding solos and ensemble playing. Even Gabriel gets into the act with several nice flute interludes. "Foxtrot" is a great album and still serves as an inspiration to a myriad of prog rock bands to this day. "Suppers Ready" stands as one of progressive rock's finest moments and makes this album a must own for any fans of the genre.

Music for a Splendid Voyage.......2007-06-14

I have treated Seconds Out like it was a case of vintage Dom Perignon since I first heard it at age 16, shortly after it was released. I only bring it out when I need true transcendence, and it has NEVER disappointed.
The first four tracks are pleasant but, compared to the rest, merely excellent (though Carpet Crawlers is hypnotically mellifluous). From Firth of Fifth on, there is pure magic in every tune. They are almost all Gabriel compositions from the band's best era, and Collins had yet to go pop, so he gives each song the loving respect it deserves, and his strong voice takes the music places Peter's never could. Melding some of rock's wisest and most transportive lyrics with myriad melodies and thunderous climaxes, this is Genesis' masterpiece, and no other band has ever made it to this particular musical Valhalla.
Back when inner voyaging was my main occupation, I could always count on Firth of Fifth and Cinema Show to take me to the crest of a peak and launch me into the heavens. Time after time, year after year, those tunes carried me all the way home. If you've ever peaked so hard your entire body convulses with every note, you know what I mean. If you haven't, do your research on how to get there cleanly and wisely, get in the right time and place and mindset, and put these two tunes on, LOUD, loud enough to make you feel the music in every cell of your body, not just hear it; you'll get there, and it will change your life from that moment on.
This is yet another amazingly perfect live show recorded in Paris, like Babylon By Bus, Bill Evans' Paris Concert, and so many others. Paris makes the magic come to life. Spend some time in the city and it's easy to see why. The architecture and ambience are non pareil; it would be hard to not be inspired there. Genesis clearly were.
This music breathes and takes on a life of its own, especially on Firth, Cinema, the Musical Box crescendo, and Supper's Ready; how many bands can write a 25-minute rock symphony, and have it go this many places with this much color and depth? I can think of only one.
I haven't heard this cd, so I can't say if they've come close to the incredible vinyl version (hope so but doubt it). I have three original copies, and my pristine japanese virgin vinyl version still emerges from the vault once a year or so when the muses let me know that it's time to ascend to the land of pure bliss again. When cds were invented, my first thought was, Seconds Out with zero crackle and pop! But alas, cds suck and are flat and dead; digital simply can not touch analog for warmth and depth. Still, if ever a recording deserved a 5.1 super-cd ultimate This Is It version, it's Seconds Out.
Apparently Hackett left after this record because he was mixed down too far, among other reasons, but I think that helps the ghostly textures he created with his volume pedal and delays become part of the overall music, rather than a normal lead sound. There is a haunting feeling here (haunted by PG's spirit making sure his music and incomparable lyrics were respected?) that is far beyond the sum of each player's part. Chester's drumming (and Bruford's on Cinema) is in perfect harmony, their jazz chops adding to the band's progressive/classical feel, and the drum duet on Los Endos is another fine peak. Collins was a hell of a drummer, a forgotten fact.
Banks shows himself to be a major part of Genesis' magic, his endlessly melodic parts always making everything sound sublimely musical. He and Rutherford and Hackett were a magnificent team, and they left us with this incredible document. I've listened to many Genesis bootlegs but have never heard a show that was as musically superlative as this, though some of the Lamb tour is killer. Add to that the legendary sound quality...this is easily one of the finest-sounding live albums by any band ever---thank you Mr. Hentschel, you are a genius...and we have one of the sweetest recordings for inner space travel available on this planet.
This is NOT background music. It demands total immersion on great headphones or an audiophile system, vinyl much preferred, volume waaay up, lights out, phone off the hook, doors locked, mind wide open. Give it the respect it deserves, and Seconds Out will take you places you have never been, places where you become part of the music of the spheres and you are complete.

My best friend talked me into going to the Genesis concert in 1977 in Seattle. Before the concert I only listen to A Trick of the Tail but I was blow away with the concert. Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Steve Hackett and Chester Thompson click as a group. Before this concert I was able to see YES, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull and other big groups from that era but Genesis 1977 tour was the very best concert I have every attended. When the Seconds Out album debuted I was reluctant to purchase it because of my bias from seeing the concert, but I was very wrong. This album captures the essence of the concert. I can put my headphones on and close my eyes and I will be transported back to the concert. I was able to see Genesis during there 1984 tour and it was not nearly as good as the 1977 tour. Of all the albums to own from Genesis this a must album. You will not be disappointed with the quality or the sound that is delivered.

Great live album, but..........2007-02-12

The sound is a bit "flat" if you see what I mean. I agree with some of the reviewer, the bass is hard to find sometimes, and the guitar is flat.
There are songs that I just hate on this album, even if I love the studio version of these same songs. The best example is "The lamb lies down", I think that it is a bad version, the vocal are horrible and the music is not better. I don't like "Robbery, Assault and battery" and "I know what I like"..Also, cutting "Dance on the volcano" was not a good idea, the best part of this song is not there (the ending section)
Now, let's give the good news, Firth of fifth is incredible, Supper's ready is well done also and The cinema Show is amazing. Good live version of Los Endos. Squonk and Carpet Crawlers are just OK, but the studio version are better. Overall, I am 50% satisfied with this double live album, hence the mid point rating.

GENESIS CIRCA 1971.......2007-06-13

It's hard to pick a 'best' Genesis CD. Personally, this, "Lamb Lies Down..." and "Invisible Touch" are my favs, along with "Wind & Wuthering" & "Abacab" being runners up...I know tons of people would disagree with those picks, especially since most Genesis aficionados insist that their career is split up into 'prog' and 'pop'. But it's a little difficult to find everyone to agree on WHERE the 'pop' phase of Genesis began. They had their first 'ballad' type song in 1976, but some say it wasn't until 1980 when they were shedding their prog rock style...many also say that INVISIBLE TOUCH saw the band fully shed their prog-status, yet I can definitely tell a distinction between INVISIBLE TOUCH and, oh, just to pick one of a 100++++ names out of a hat, let's say anything by Debbie Gibson...Genesis' music has always had an air of intelligence, making compassionate music without promoting the scum-like attributes that society marks itself with..."Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" is probably their best example of this, dealing with the issue of the rampant divorce rate that increased ever so much more in the following years...except it didn't talk about the 'issue' on a global scale, but rather a personal one...

Anyway...this CD certainly doesn't sound like INVISIBLE TOUCH or any portion thereof. The technology is a bit murky, yet the band uses it to their advantage it seems...this CD is WAY too short, at 39 minutes or so...their follow ups aren't quite as short (SELLING ENGALND BY THE POUND was almost an hour long), yet the music on here I think is better.

Like I said, it's hard to pick a fav. A lot of people will probably disagree with me on the statement above, 'cause unlike a lot of Genesis aficionados, my musical tastes are not limited to the '70's...I was born in the early 80's, so I experienced INVISIBLE TOUCH not only WHILE it was happening, but also with a fresh perspective, untainted by 'moral' standards or peer pressure. As the famous SELLING ENGLAND song title says, I KNOW what I like (and I don't need anyone to tell me what I like, as the song DOESN'T say...). But MY musical tastes are also not limited to 80's music, nor 80's and '90's music...my father listened to a lot of his music (70's) and so I guess that's mainly why I'm not as into the '60's as I would like to be. I don't like THE BEATLES hardly at all, except for a few songs...there's no 'hits' album nor is there any regular studio album I have any strong desire to own.

Anyhoo, I guess that's all I got to say about this album, although I realize it was mostly 'off topic'...there isn't much to say about this album, IMO, unless you're like a music TEACHER who has studied the specifics of what makes music enjoyable...

Genesis in their prime.......2007-06-07

Everyone talks about Peter Gabriel and how he has such a wonderful voice and a talent for really good lyrics. While I agree, I have to admit I mostly like Nursery Cryme for all the instrumental bits and pieces that appear throughout the album. Whether it's the mellotron-dominated finale on "Return of the Giant Hogweed" (which reminds me of a dark shadow creeping over planet Earth- YIKES what a scary song) or the short organ solo appearing somewhere around the halfway point of "Fountain of Salmacis", these are mainly the things I play the album for.

Don't get me wrong, the vocal melodies are great, and the fairy tale-like atmosphere of the entire album is great as well, but let's not forget Genesis was capable of some very good instrumental sections too.

Early Bliss.......2007-06-04

This album, along with all Peter Gabriel and early Phil Collins efforts by Genesis, stand proudly at the fore of their genre.
I do not worry about the slightly poorer sound quality (very improved by digital engineering now) nor by what some may describe as self indulgence by this band.
They have left a wonderful legacy of music that is there simply to be enjoyed, and enjoy I will!

Genesis - The First Really Solid Album From The Band.......2007-04-06

"Nursery Cryme" for me is the album that really started things off for Genesis. Although this was not their first album, it was the album where the band really came into their own and forged the sound that would initiate them as one of the all time classic progressive rock bands. It was also to feature what most people consider to be the ultimate lineup of the band with Peter Gabriel up front, Phil Collins on drums (and occasional lead vocal), Tony Banks on keys, Steve Hackett on guitar, and Mike Rutherford on bass. "Nursery Cryme" is not as good as some of the albums that came after it, but it is still a solid piece of work and a must own for serious Genesis fans. One of the band's all time classics "The Musical Box" opens things up with Gabriel playing the dirty old man role culminating in a bombastic "climax". Other highlights include "The Return Of The Giant Hogweed" which was a fantasy tale with a serious subtle commentary on England's diminishing wetlands. "Harold The Barrel" is a cool little song about a restaurant owner standing on the ledge of a building contemplating suicide. "The Fountain Of Salmacis" is prime progressive rock clocking in at just under 8 minutes to close out the album. This was Genesis first truly great album and would serve as a springboard for even better things to come.

Groundbreaking artistic thought, harsh production.......2007-03-06

At that time (actually just before my time, sadly-I never saw them live during this period), they were taking us into new realms of art and mind. The stories are both intrinsically harsh and majestic, narcissistic and devious. Like John Anderson's Yes lyrics and even Ian's Tull lyrics, and of course Floyd's, they took us to places we didn't even know we wanted to go, no matter how desperate we were to go anywhere but here. But Genesis's, that connected with old world teaching in such a disconcerted way- that is the way we wanted to start looking at things, it was all too real. And the music changed in new ways so much the same of the new horizons being breached by the words. We wanted to use what we had learned, but we wanted to look at knowledge in a different way, now. They all taught us that, but here they all started saying it with such punch and charisma.

Sadly, the sound quality is harsh. Methinks they just didn't have access to the better equipment (even the best so very far behind today's standards) available at the time.

I care not. The music prevails.

Witnessing an attempt at genre crossover is kind of like watching a logrolling competition. The failures are almost as excruciatingly embarrassing for the audience as they are for the performer. But when one gets a glimpse at one of the rare success stories: Ah! What a thing of beauty! Genesis's 1983 eponymous release sits proudly in the latter camp. Laying down nine midtempo tracks that are full and crisp without wearing too glossy of a pop sheen, Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford create an aural world where Yes fans and those who like chart-toppers live in harmony. And whatever lyrical well Collins chooses to tap proves to be a gusher, whether he is dipping into reservoirs of Gabrielan menace ("Mama," "Home by the Sea," "Silver Rainbow"), stealing a page from pop music's huge tome of conflicted-heart numbers ("That's All," "Taking It All To Hard"), or getting just plain ol' ridiculous ("Illegal Alien"). At the risk of seriously ruffling indie-rock feathers, one might even say that, in a way, Genesis sits as the great-grandfather of Radiohead's OK Computer. The Pre-lude to "Invisible Touch" and a great sequel to "Abacab".......2007-07-30

Between Genesis' self-titled disc, the band released "Abacab" and "Invisible Touch," while Phil Collins released his second and third solo albums, "Hello, I Must Be Going" and "No Jacket Required." GENESIS (1983) sounds a lot like the past few Genesis/Phil Collins albums, with the exception of a much more polished sound quality, thanks to Hugh Padgham, who had recently produced the last disc by "The Police."

With hits like "That's All" - "Mama" - "Illegal Alien" - "Home by the
Sea" and "Taking it All too Hard" as well as the album cuts "Silver Rainbow" and "Just a Job To Do" Genesis with assistance from Phil Collins
was truly starting to sound a lot like the Phil Collins band, but that's (only) because Phil Collins' solo career was also starting to become very popular during this time.

I still enjoy "Abacab" and "Invisible Touch" much more than this one,
but it still deserves 5 stars, due to the fact that it was a new beginning for the sound of Genesis in the studio and on stage.

Also during this time, Phil Collins produced the solo single "Against All
Odds" (Take a Look at Me Now) and his third solo disc, "No Jacket."
After a 2 year break from recording with Genesis, Phil Collins would return to record "Invisible Touch," which would feature five number one
singles in the UK and the states. However, "GENESIS" seems to have aged
pretty well in the 25 years since it's creation, with the exception of
maybe the silly "Illegal Alien."

Troubling Reviews Above.......2007-07-25

"The lighter side of deportation?"...I guess the only thing more insensitive than the above-mentioned quote is the fact that a band of this stature and success had to pick on people in desperate circumstances. There are a few things to like about this album but with women of color depicted as prostitutes in the Mama video and accusations that an illegal alien would sell his own sister for work blots it all out for me. Listen to the Lamb or "Supper's Ready" from the Seconds Out live album - that's greatness. This is not.

Genesis's 1983 self titled album is a classic!

The album features the band's earliest classic hits: the dark and eluring Mama, the hip ballad That's All, the Phil Collins signature ballad Taking It All Too Hard, the sophisticated album track Home By The Sea, and the silly Illegal Alien.

Genesis, the album, marks the band's gradual transition to mainstream pop (they would eventually make that transition complete in the follow up album Invisible Touch), and elevation to global superstardom. It is a definite classic!

In my view with this album Genesis showed that they were still one of the best symphonic rock groups. The fairy tale atmosphere is still there. The way Genesis has developed over 15 years is fascinating. People came and went. But they are still virtuosos, I am happy that they are on tour again. They come to Amsterdam and I have tickets !

I will be writing a review on the legendary masterpiece self-titled album entitled "GENESIS" by one of Rock's legendary all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of England's pride and joy's, G-E-N-E-S-I-S! The legendary self-titled "GENESIS" album was originally released in 1983 on Vinyl/LP and Cassette on the Atlantic Records label which is a Warner Communications Company. This masterpiece album would be released on Compact Disc in the mid to late 80's. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

At this point in GENESIS' career, The band was hot and on a roll while keeping themselves extremely busy keeping GENESIS on the charts by releasing new live material from the 1981-82 Tour. Following the success of 1981's "ABACAB" album, Phil Collins' successful solo debut album, 1981's "FACE VALUE," the 1982 mini EP "3 X 3," 1982's live album entitled "THREE SIDES LIVE" and Phil Collins' second successful solo album, 1982's "HELLO I MUST BE GOING," the GENESIS band comprising of Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford would soon regroup after a long break with new refreshing ideas for their new follow-up studio album to the extremely successful "ABACAB" album from 1981. After the songs were written for the new album, GENESIS would head into the recording studio and begin laying down the tracks. The band also wanted to utilize and use the best of the new modified and advanced top of the line synthesizer technology which includes computerized synthesized drumkits. And to top it off, GENESIS was going to record their new album in the same tradition and formula as Sir George Martin did with THE BEATLES and Brian Wilson would do with THE BEACH BOYS. GENESIS with longtime studio collaborator Hugh Padgham, would produce this new album by using the recording studio as a creative instrument to come up with fresh new ideas and sounds more than ever before. These ideas that the band came up with would soon take Progressive Rock to another level giving the music a little more solid synthesized Rock sound. After a certain amount of time went by, GENESIS would emerge and come out of the recording studio with the finished and completed acetate and submit the finished product to their record label company and employer, Atlantic Records. Atlantic Records would soon release the album as the legendary self-titled "GENESIS" album in 1983. The self-titled "GENESIS" album would turn out to be one of the band's greatest contributions, accomplishments and achievements in their whole history and career. In my opinion, the self-titled "GENESIS" album is without a doubt, a true testament of the sheer genius and musical creativity of three extremely talented individuals. The self-titled "GENESIS" album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.

It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of GENESIS to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. The legendary masterpiece self-titled "GENESIS" album begins with the unbelievable mystical haunting synthesized Rocker "Mama," the refreshing and smooth Rocker "That's All," the breathtaking energetic Rocker "Home By The Sea," the beautifully slow turned fast synthesized Rocker "Second Home By The Sea," the merciless fast paced synthesized Rocker "Illegal Alien," the beautifully slow soothing song "Taking It All Too Hard," the amazing synthesized Rocker "Just A Job To Do," the incredible synthesized Rocker "Silver Rainbow" and the beautifully slow and rugged synthesized Rocker "It's Gonna Get Better." May I also add that all three bandmembers were on a mission to create and record the ultimate Progressive Rock album. Phil Collins' blistering lead vocals were sizzlin' red hot and on fire while recording and laying down the tracks for this legendary album. Phil Collins' explosive drumming followed by his perfect timekeeping, laid down the foundations for their music combining and solidifying their sound perfectly, beautifully and harmoniously.

Overall, this is one great album worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard GENESIS fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of GENESIS, you might want to research further and possibly invest into a GENESIS greatest hits compilation album. The reason for this is because it will save you a lot of money of having to buy all of their albums one by one. If you love all of the songs on their compilation album, it would then be in your best interests to purchase as many GENESIS album(s) that you may want. Which ever way you may choose, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own GENESIS music collection. You can do all of your researching and purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. If you ever get a chance, buy this album. You'll be glad that you did.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary masterpiece album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This treasure album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great priceless gem that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

There no doubt exists a school of rock purists who consider Invisible Touch the album where Genesis officially kissed street credibility goodbye and said hello to beer commercial anthems and puppet extravaganza videos. True, perhaps, but on the other hand, it's great to sing along to a good pop song, too. And this record has good pop songs in spades, from rock-solid I'm-not-so-tough-I-can't-cry-style tearjerkers ("In Too Deep," "Throwing It All Away") to zingy, gurgly pop confections ("Land of Confusion," "Anything She Does"). A few slightly more sprawling tracks are also included ("Tonight, Tonight, Tonight," "Domino," and the instrumental "The Brazilian"), but compared to the band's earlier attempt at art-rock opuses, even these feel a bit candy coated. We are talking about 1987, after all. Thin synth lines weren't retro. They just were. And we loved it. --Bob Michaels

genesis really hit it big with invisible touch.they had 5 top 10 hits from this album. the top 10 hits were invisible touch (#1),throwing it all away(#4).land of confusion (#4), tonight tonight tonight(#3),and in too deep (#3).invisible touch remains my favorite album by genesis. speaking of land of confusion,the review title comes from the scene in the video when the ronald reagan spitting image puppet pushes the nuke button and says ooh!that's one heck of a nurse and gets bopped on the head with a snorkel. ed wilson

Genesis' most successful album in the US is still great 20 plus years on.......2007-06-22

English progressive rockers Genesis released their 16th overall album entitled Invisible Touch in June of 1986.
By 1986, lead singer and drummer Phil Collins was a solo superstar with his 1985 solo album No Jacket Required which hit #1, spawned singles and won him Grammies. Plus had hits with the soundtrack songs "Against All Odds" in 1984 and "Separate Lives" (with Marilyn Martin) in 1985. Plus he produced Earth Wind and Fire singer Philip Bailey's album Chinese Wall (which featured the two Phil's duet Easy Lover) and songs for Adam Ant's Strip album. Keyboard player Tony Banks had done the film score to the Kevin Bacon movie Quicksilver. Guitarist/bass player Mike Rutherford started his side project called Mike and the Mechanics which released its self-titled debut which spawned three singles.
In late 1985, the band plus co-producer Hugh Padgham recorded the follow-up to the 1983 self-titled effort. When the album was released, would fans embrace it or turn its back on the band. Read on and find out.
We kick things off with the chart-topping title track which has one of the best Rutherford riffs I ever heard and is still a great pop number today. Next is the first of two epics "Tonight Tonight Tonight". This track speaks about the evils of drugs and the seedy parts of life and with the drum machine loop, created a masterpiece. The song was released as a single with over FOUR MINUTES chopped from this classic and was another US Top 10 hit. We follow with "Land of Confusion" which was a great rocker. Who cannot forget the video where the puppets of the band and the late Ronald Reagan are dominating the clip. This track was another Top 5 hit here in the US. The album's first side closed with another Top 10 hit "In Too Deep" which was a nice ballad to close the first half.
The driving "Anything She Does" kicks off the album's second half and is an incredibly fun rocker with amusing supermodel-oriented lyrics that are right on the money, and the synth horns on it sound remarkably like the real thing. The video for this was funny and included the late Benny Hill as their head of security Fred Scottle Esquire! Next is the 11 minute plus epic "Domino". The first section "In the Glow of the Night" is wistful and superb. Then the section ends suddenly and we dreamingly then segue into the powerful "The Last Domino" which is killer despite the Simmons drums which slightly date the song. Next is the album's second US Top 10 hit "Throwing It All Away" which was a superb ballad. We then close the album with the atmospheric instrumental called "The Brazilian" which is packed with killer hooks and a wild atmosphere.
Invisible Touch would become Genesis' highest charting album in the US reaching #3 and was also its best selling album in the US with 6 million copies sold in the US alone and it is because the material is superb and has held up. Also, ex-Genesis members Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett had success that year with their albums So and GTR respectively. Invisible Touch is still superb today.

GENESIS ADDS THEIR INVISIBLE TOUCH TO THIS INCREDIBLE ALBUM........2007-05-05

I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "GENESIS - INVISIBLE TOUCH" by one of England's pride and joy's. I give you one of Britain's favorite sons, G-E-N-E-S-I-S! "INVISIBLE TOUCH" was originally released in 1986 on Vinyl/LP, Cassette and Compact Disc on the Atlantic Records label which is a Warner Communications Company. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

GENESIS will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for writing and recording some of Rock's most sacred classic anthems ever.
It is now 1985 and a new phase for the band during this point in their career. GENESIS' lead singer, drummer and frontman Phil Collins would continue to enjoy his solo career with the extremely successful "NO JACKET REQUIRED" album released in 1985. His tour would be extremely successful to highly critically acclaim. However, Collins would forever remain loyal to the band that gave him his start and would willingly return to GENESIS and rejoin his fellow bandmates and friends Tony Banks on keyboards and bassist, lead and rhythm guitarist Mike Rutherford. It was now time for the band to head into the recording studio and record the follow-up allbum to the extremely successful "GENESIS" album from 1983. It would be on this next GENESIS album that the band would follow in the same recording atmosphere and tradition as the previous successful album "GENESIS" released in 1983. After a certain period of time went by, the band would emerge and come out of the recording studio with the fully completed acetate and deliver the finished product to their record label and employer, Atlantic Records. Atlantic Records would release the product as the "INVISIBLE TOUCH" album in 1986. In my opinion, the "INVISIBLE TOUCH" album is another true testament of the genius and musical creativity of three extremely talented individuals. The "INVISIBLE TOUCH" album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.

It is now time to let the rock n' Roll music of GENESIS to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. The legendary "INVISIBLE TOUCH" album from 1986 begins with the incredible synthesized progressive Rocker "Invisible Touch," the beautifully slow and soothing synthesized Rocker "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight," the breathtaking synthesized Progressive hard Rocker "Land Of Confusion," the beautifully slow and well arranged love song "In Too Deep," the fast and energetic progressive Rocker "Anything She Does," the groundbreaking and beautifully slow mild Rocker turned fast synthesized progressive Rocker "Domino (Part One - In The Glow Of The Night AND Part Two - The Last Domino)," one of the greatest and most powerful love songs ever written that we can all grasp and relate to, "Throwing It All Away" and the beautifully synthesized progressive instrumental song "The Brazilian." May I also add that all three musicians were steamin' and sizzlin' red hot while laying down the tracks for this album. Phil Collins' blistering lead vocals were so powerful and emotional that he takes the songs and music to an entirely different level.

Overall, this is one great album worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard GENESIS fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of GENESIS, I would highly suggest that you research the many GENESIS greatest hits compilation albums on Amazon com before you make your final decision as to which GENESIS album(s) that is right for your musical needs and tastes. If you feel that you truly love the music of GENESIS and you want more, then it would be in your best interests to purchase their many other studio albums that are available on Amazon com. Either way you choose, you will have taken a giant step towards owning and starting your very own GENESIS music collection. You can do all of your researching and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. If you ever get a chance, buy this album. You'll be happy and satisfied that you did.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This treasure album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. The band would also quickly embark on a new World Tour to promote the "INVISIBLE TOUCH" album in what would prove to be one of their greatest tours yet ever. Following the tour, it was now time once again for the band to take another long rest and hiatus. There would be many other GENESIS albums that are still yet to come and new stories that would still need to be told and written. Genesis - Overexposed But A Decent Album.......2007-04-11

This album gets regularly pounded by progressive rock fans as the album where Genesis hit rock bottom. I think part of the problem was that the album was so incredibly commercially successful that many of the tracks were played so much on the radio (and MTV) that people just got sick of hearing them. Add to that the fact that two songs appeared in TV commercials (again vastly overexposed), it is easy to see why this album earned the "sell out" tag that many people place upon it. All this being said, I have always liked this album. No, it is not on a par with the band's progressive rock masterpieces of the 70's, but taken for what it is I enjoy most of it. On the negative side the title track "Invisible Touch", "In Too Deep", and "Throwing It All Away" are pretty typical Phil Collins mush, but these songs are still much better than the crap he put out on his solo albums. On the positive side there are some really good tracks on the disc. "Tonight Tonight, Tonight" is a 10 plus minute proggish tune that now is usually thought of as TV commercial music, but listening to the unedited version it is really a strong track. "Land Of Confusion" is another good social commentary song that suffered from massive over airplay. "Anything She Does" is another good pop tune. The album closer "The Brazilian" is a cool instrumental written by Tony Banks. The highlight of the disc (and the most prog oriented track) is the two part 10 minute plus "Domino". I love this song and on the tour it was one of the highlights of the show. As mentioned previously some people really hate this album, and I can understand where they are coming from, but I have always thought it was a decent effort.

The second worst album of Genesis.......2007-02-15

This is an album that I really hate, most of the songs have been heard over an over again, I can't listen to them anymore, I am talking about "Invisible Touch",Tonight, tonight, tonight", "Land of confusion", "In too deep", "Anything she does" and "Throwing it all away"
It's like fast food, you get into it fast, but as soon as you have finish, you begin to feel sick. These songs were instant hits, but they didn't pass the test of time. The only track that I still like is "Domino" part one and two.

One last point, the only other Genesis album that is this weak is "Abacab"
I am wondering how can somebody can give five star to an album like this one ?
