Album Description

Underworld is one of the most highly anticipated genre films in over a decade. Lakeshore Record's soundtrack, which features exclusive songs and mixes (both in and inspired by the film), is an unparalleled collection of the best music the contemporary rock world has to offer.

The soundtrack album is produced by Danny Lohner of Nine Inch Nails whose unique relationships within the community of A-List talent brings such unprecedented highlights to this project as the first song ever penned by Maynard James Keenan (Tool / A Perfect Circle) for a motion picture and soundtrack album. Also appearing on the album is former Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland who along with Lohner and Filter's Richard Patrick have created the formidable super group The Damning Well who make their debut on this album with the song "Awakening."

One look through the album's track listing and you'll find contributions from artists as diverse and respected as Trust Co., Finch, Skinny Puppy, Page Hamilton, and David Bowie to name a few. Every track on this album is either written exclusively for this project, or is an exclusive remix, or rare version only available on this release.

Underworld, both as a film and an album is a truly unique marrige of artistic sound and vision.

5 out of 5 stars underworld.......2007-06-23

I remember buying this the first day it came out, I was really curious to hear what the Damning Well and Puscifer would sound like, I was not displeased. I also really enjoyed the David Bowie track, overall this is an above average soundtrack, at least I though so.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks to a movie ever........2007-05-26

Usually I'm not big on soundtracks, but this is by far my favorite soundtrack ever. The whole album was produced by Danny Lohner, the second best person to be in Nine Inch Nails after Trent. The first song, Awakening by The Damning Well (Danny Lohner, Richard Patrick, Wes Borland) is my favorite song on there. It's just a classic hard rock song with very melodic vocals done brilliantly by Richard Patrick. The second song, REV 22:20 by Puscifer (Maynard James Keenan, Danny Lohner) is another one of my favorites on the album and it has the sentual type vibe to it with extra vocals by Milla. All of the songs are really good, and I'm not just saying that. The Page Hamilton song was also good. Hell, all of them are worth listening to. The album will be worth the amount of money you spend, I can tell you that. It has some great collaborations and thats what got me interested in it in the first place. That and the fact that I'm a huge Danny Lohner fan (and he did a great job with this, by the way). I highly recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars Better than I thought..........2006-10-15

I bought this album because iTunes wouldn't let me download the Puscifer track unless I downloaded the entire album... the rest of the CD actually isn't all that bad.

It took me months to buy this because I bought Underworld Evolution for one track and the rest of the CD wasn't anything to climax about. Songs like "Rev 22:20", "Optimissed", "Bring Me The Head of the Disco King", "Awakening", and every Renholder track on this album make it worth buying. I'd mention the A Perfect Circle tracks, but I already had those so they weren't new. They're a nice addition, though.

I never watched the movie so I can't really say if the songs fit in with the theme and feel of the film.

This CD is definately better than its sister. If you're thinking about buying one or the other, go with this one first.

3 out of 5 stars Typical rock soundtrack.......2006-08-12

This is a good -not great-rock soundtrack. It fits the movie.
OK if you like this sort of thing.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty much sucks...BUT..........2006-08-11

I hated the movie and this soundtrack blows but hey, it's got the best Finch song ever released on it...so I say 4 star. Worms of the Earth baby.

5 out of 5 stars Yikes.......2007-07-13

What can I say? This is an excellent, excellent, excellent album with absolutely ferocious songs that are the musical equivalent of removing your face with tweezers (in a good way, of course).

As good as it is, about 92.312435438973465% of people will probably absolutely hate this album. The reason why is each note is like getting shot in the face. Dissonant, jagged guitars pummel you while the insanely fast double-bass-prominent drumming kicks you in the balls while a man who must have swallowed a box of thumbtacks screams and screams and screams and screams at you.

But then, the instrumentals...

The band must have said, "OK, we don't want people to die by listening to this, so we better stick in some more mellow stuff". It's like going from eating cement to eating ice cream. Even when the instrumentals use dissonant guitars and fast drums like the songs with vocals, at least there's no screaming, and they just as often veer into jazz-rock territory or weird, ambient sound effects. More than anything, these show that the band can do more than kill you with sound.

I have made slight reference to, but never really overtly mentioned, the quality of the musicianship on this album. Even if you hate these guys, you have to admit they're really talented. Almost scary time signatures are played at insanely fast tempos, and then they do the mellow thing. Not only can they pull off multiple, usually very difficult things very well, it generally results in a great song.

Not all the songs sound the same, either. They did to me the first time I listened to them. But if you really pay attention, there's a world of difference and they are all cool.

In conclusion, just buy the @#$! thing. Even if it all sounds like sped-up sludge at first, you'll get accustomed to it and then, once you start to like it, you won't be able to live without it.

BUY NOW!

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the apex!.......2007-06-14

Primary composers, Chris Pennie(drums) and Ben Weinman(guitar) have constructed an overwhelming experience seemingly aimed at not only crushing listener with the aggression of extreme metal but keeping them constantly tense and completely off balanced with chaotic but suspenseful unorthodox structure. The music is constantly moving and changing, scrambling, stopping and starting over, but not without a sense of purpose as the songs carefully build with intensity, reaching frenzied climaxes or in some instances dramatic but menacing releases. Even the more quiet jazzy melodic moments are unsettling and tense as they keep the pressure boiling.

The group's much hyped musical chops are indeed stellar in a psychotic way with blistering keyboard like guitar work and an impossibly tight rhythm section. There is a ton of stuff happening at once and in a short amount of time, so it's possible to hear the same song several times and still miss out; watch out for the twisted circus melody that gradually takes shape in "Jim Fear". Yet, despite the blazing guitars and god like rapid fire drumming the music is often paced at a jerky steady grind without the driving momentum often associated with speed metal or thrash. The experience of this album is more on par with getting tossed and slammed around in rapids than speeding down the highway. Musique concrete is also explored on several tracks with cryptic, sometimes creepy paranoid samples. Chris Pennie also has two lengthy drum solos on the instrumentals "*#" and the jazzy "Weekend Sex Change."

It should be noted that the music isn't really expressive or soulful, as evident by the cover art and album title the music is intentionally robotic, caculated, assaulting, and cold. When your ear does catch a funky head bopping groove, it often brings to mind a factory assembly line or clunking gears; this is most evident in the drill like riff that sandwhiches "43% Burned" and the album's surprisingly appealing title track that would borderline on smooth jazz if it wasn't for the crunchy guitars that puncutate the closing. The vocals are often barked or spoken word nonsense with a few memorable hooks chants and lines; an aspect of the band that would improve in the future with more rangeful and creative front men. Though later work would see DEP exploring simpler but even more creative and out their ideas, this is still the band at it's most complicated and endurance pushing; eclipsing the apex indeed. The appeal of this album lies in the creative cliche free way the songs provoke unease and paranoia, the sheer brutality of the album's assualt, and the stamina/technical talents of the musicans to dare bring these crazy ideas to life.

5 out of 5 stars Classic of both extreme metal and experimental music.......2006-09-13

The Dillinger Escape Plan's debut and masterpiece, Calculating Infinity, struck the music world from, as far as I can tell, out of nowhere. As far as influences go, the closest I can think of is the Dazzling Killmen's technical hardcore, Meshuggah's dissonance and lack of melody, Cynic's mix of jazz and metal, and John Zorn (Naked City, to be precise)/Mr. Bungle's need to encompass as many genres into one album as possible. But none of those bands really come all that close to sounding like Calculating Infinity, although I suppose they were precursors to The Dillinger Escape Plan's defining attributes - the intricate, staccato riffs, the number musical styles that one song can cover, the ultra complex rhythms that are played at nearly unbelievable speeds, and of course the total lack of cohesive melodies that leads many to call them "pointless noise". These elements are all then tied together by their method of songwriting - which involves taking the number of musical movements that progressive bands put into their 20 minute epics and condensing them down to 2-4 minute long doses of insanity.

To give you a slight idea of what compromises a The Dillinger Escape Plan song, I'll take the longest track on the album "43% Burnt" (not including "Variations on a Cocktail Dress" because it finishes with 5 minutes of silence). It starts off with a strange breakdown that, just as you are getting used to its odd rhythm, launches into an incredibly strange and fast riff. Within less than 20 seconds this riff has switched between distorted and clean guitars, and then is replaced by a flurry of dissonant chording while a clean arpeggio is played over top of the chaos. The first riff comes back briefly before you are treated to Ben Weinman frantic lead guitar work. After another chaotic assault of arpeggios and dissonant chords the song hits a high point of intensity around the minute and a half mark. Before this climax really has time to sink in it is quickly funneled off into a strange jazzy clean section that transitions into a spurt of staccato chording. After this the band rockets back into the adrenaline rush of the climax of the song, letting it play itself out more fully and powerfully this time. Then the last minute or so of the song is take up by the same breakdown that was played at the start.

As you can tell, a lot goes on during Calculating Infinity, but there are two things about this density of ideas that make it great. First is the way the songs all flow cohesively from idea to idea. While at first it seems like a frantic mess of style switches, but as you listen to it more it becomes apparent that the songs do flow in a logical, though far from normal, manner. Nothing on the album is just a random style switch thrown in for fun, and everything is extremely well thought out. Second is the intensity that comes from the unsettlingly fast pace of the songs, the energy that The Dillinger Escape Plan put into the music, and the how ridiculously fast and complex the musicianship is - most notable Chris Pennie's drumming and Ben Weinman's lead guitar. While its originality and the fact that it practically created the technical metalcore genre on its own are the reasons that Calculating Infinity could be considered a classic in the realms of extreme or avant-garde music, I think The Dillinger Escape Plan's songwriting and intensity are really what make it a great and enjoyable piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars noise? please..........2006-07-26

BOO HOO dillinger are teh untalented peoples! they make teh ugly solos at the same time! OH YEAH I KNOW TO PLAY TEH ARPEGGIOS ME MAKE POOPIE TEH DILLINGER PLAN GUYS! NOISE! RUN FOR YER LIVES!

the arguments above, don't work, they don't stand for anything, they are invalid, they are nonsensical, this release is amazing and there is nothing else to it, and the people who hate it and claim it to be a record by "untalented people" is because they are so close-minded that they can't take some screams along with their daily dose of music, so they throw it away and never take the time to listen to it patiently

want some real noise? google the term "masonna"

5 out of 5 stars Math Metal at its best.......2006-07-21

While some people may be unable to understand the complexities that The Dillinger Escape Plan shows throughout their music, and simply write it off as "noise" or "soundtrack to a train wreck" they just are simply too ignorant to try to understand what is happening.

Being a music student for the past 6 years of my life, and playing guitar for the past 3, was still not enough preperation to completely understand this album. The guitarists are phenomenal, being able to pull off any key signature (7/4 what?) and any musical style, jazz or shock rock or math metal and fuse it all together in an incredibly catchy way. Their drummer is insane being able to be all over the place and yet go in a single direction all at once. In perspective, my friend who has played drums for 10 years and practices at least 2 or 3 hours a day, is still unable to play most of their songs. While some people criticize the band for the vocals being unnecessary, due to the amount of screaming, they fail to realize that the music that they listen to involve screaming as well, since pretty much ALL metal (despite newer bands like Trivium, and bands before the early 1990's) involves some sort of guy sounding like he's trying to channel satan himself through his throat (perhaps they're jealous since they can't write music like this).

All-in-all, if you are looking for something that you have never heard before, which I can guarantee you haven't, or are just curious to see what the hubbub is about, then you should definetly pick this album up.

5 out of 5 stars the peak of Dillingers carrer (so far)..........2007-03-02

Mike Patton + DEP = pure insanity.

There should have been a full length album instead of an EP at this point of Dillingers career. Dillinger Escape Plan is one of the few bands that totally match Mike Patton's eccentric style and bizzare insanity, (besides Mr. Bungle).. but nonetheless, this fleeting moment of brilliance is an amazing piece of pure insanity. Mike Patton solves the only problem that I have had with past DEP releases, and that is the repetitive and often annoying vocals. Mike Patton's voice does many things on this, but one thing he doesn't do is get repetitive. The music itself is even a different kind of machine than that of 'Calculating Infinity'. You can hear bits of electronica scattered here and there and that is no doubt Mike Patton in the workings.

Overall this is an unhinged bit of brutality for any fan of heavy music, and an inspiration for the future success of 'Miss Machine'.. Do not pass this up.

5 out of 5 stars PAPER...SCISSORS...ROCK...We will rock you!!!.......2007-02-08

YES!!! This is the type of music that may cause a person to thrash around uncontrollably as though in a fit of rage yet being quite jovial while displaying such odd behavior.

I am one of those Mike Patton fans - Faith No More is still one of my favorite bands and 'Angel Dust' is still one of my favorite albums after all these years. The mixture of Dillinger Escape Plan's mental offbeat version of metal and Patton's insane vocal experimentations is brilliantly executed. If you were a FNM and Bungle fan this should in no way disappoint.

All four songs on this EP are great but 'When Good Dogs Do Bad Things' for me is the gem of the album - combined with the chaotic sounds of DEP Patton moves from yelling "I'm the best you'll ever have" (which lyrically and vocally reminds me of the FNM song "The Gentle Art Of Making Enemies") into deep chanting, high-pitched screaming and yelling, softer enchanting harmonious whispers, deeper fluctuating Patton speaking/rapping, and the signature offbeat rap-singing Patton technique ("Mouth To Mouth"). DEP's performance is on par with Patton's vocals and the fusion of such talent results in this being probably the best EP you will ever hear. If they had made an LP it may have rivaled 'Angel Dust' as one of the most unique and experimental albums of all time.

RECOMMENDATION: Besides the obvious of purchasing more music by Patton and DEP -if you were blown away by the short brilliance of this EP then check out Saosin's EP 'Translating The Name'. Anthony Green is another very talented vocalist (not like Patton however - Green has his own unique high-pitched sound) who delivers an amazing performance alongside fast guitar shredding and pounding double bass drums - 15 minutes of bliss.

5 out of 5 stars Four tracks of unleashed fury with Mike Patton leading the way!.......2007-01-08

Mike Patton's definitive voice and shall we even say, eccentric artistic vision has allowed him to install recipes into various projects, some well received by fans, some not. Whether you are a fan of Faith No More or Peeping Tom, anything in between can still be a treat. When Patton teamed up with Dillinger Escape plan for this four-track showing, he and the band unleashed a powerful set of songs that feature the angry, heavy and extremely fast rock that still to me, stands out from other bands of the genre.

Call it crazy, mathcore, or just plain intense music, the album starts off with the speeding monster called "Hollywood Squares". Mike's poetic, dark type vocal efforts that his fans are familiar with are greatly heard with pleasure on the masterful song "Pig Latin". Track 3 is called "When Good dogs do bad things" and is a rollicking, rocking tempo of a song that has all the guitar crunch and smashing drums one could ask for. The four track album rounds out with "Come To Daddy" and features some great lead guitar work at the beginning that quickly leads into an intense, off the wall banter of Patton singing "I---want your--soul". This song is one of my favorites as it evokes a lot of mood through the guitar parts as well as some eerie synth. The final twenty seconds of the song has a final crash of drums before spookily fading out with some mysterious tones.

It's almost sad to think that by the time we got this album, the band was already heading off into the sunset with Greg Puciato. I have nothing against him, or the singer they had before this "Patton project" (Dimitri Minakakis) but I kind of wonder what might have been if the collaboration between DEP and Mike Patton had surged forward for continual studio efforts.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any more brutal and nuts than this........2006-06-29

As a fan of both Mike Patton and Dillinger, I can honestly say they fit each other perfectly. I have never heard such a magnificent hardcore masterpiece as this. In-freaking-credible. This album is so brutal and intense it kicks you out of your chair and beats you to a living pulp.
I cannot rave any higher about this CD. It rules. If you don't have it, you should. If you do, you know.

5 out of 5 stars And you thought System Of A Down was cutting edge.......2006-04-17

Uff. This EP comes out of nowhere, tears the roofs off of your house and blows the walls down. The musical equivalent of a tornado and that is no exageration.
If listening to this doesn?t destroy the room your in, I will personally come and mess it up for ya.

Imitated by System Of A Down and Dog Fashion Disco, amongst
others, its little surprise assaults like this
Irony Is A Dead Scene or Sepultura?s Procura O Cara
or his all-out screaming heart attack on Mit Gas that show Mike Patton is just that extra notch up in relentless energy, reach and creativity.

5 out of 5 stars Brings me back to the old days of D.P.G........2005-11-30

Wow... just like the good old days, probably better actually. The beats are like the old G-Funk beats (when I say old, I'm using it as a compliment), except more modernized, and just as sick. Maybe people who never really liked the whole west-coast g-funk movement won't like this CD, but I would bet that pretty much anyone who likes hip hop will really enjoy this CD.

There's really nothing out like it today - definitely worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars A+.......2005-03-20

This is right behind Dogg Food in my opinion and one of the best West Coast albums ever. These beats are crazy and very distinct. They are some of the most gangster tracks and production by Daz and Mike Dean and some of the best instrumentals I've ever heard. If a D.P.G. fan, this CD is very good and a must have.

Daz & Kurupt (Dillinger & Young Gotti for legal purposes) bring their first new record together in almost 6 years, and it sounds like 6 years of practice. The wait is worth it. Only 1 weak "song" on here, a few alright ones, most are high quality and even has a classic on here. Guests are limited to 3 songs and each member has a solo. Production is handled by Daz on every song and he's assisted by rap-a-lot's musical genius, Mike Dean, on about 12 or 13 of the tracks. It has gangsta songs and dirty songs, what else do you expect from "the terrible 2 the unbearable crew, DPG I thought u knew". With little promotion or airplay this album is almost a classic and all rap fans need a copy of it.

5 out of 5 stars Daz & Kurupt's sophmore release!.......2003-07-11

Previously known as "Tha Dogg Pound" on Death Row Records, rappers Kurupt and Daz have gone independent and on their first group offering since 1995, the duo have a lot to say.

The album goes over twenty tracks deep as Daz & Kurupt speak on streets issues with a mixture of fast-paced flows, phenominal lyrics, and top-notch production (Daz produced along with Mike Dean).

Daz and Kurupt play very well off of each other and their training under hip-hop heavyweights Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg during their Death Row days is obvious. Guests on "Dillinger & Young Gotti" are few but appearances by Xzibit, Beanie Siegel, Roscoe, RBX, and Slip Capone are utilized to the fullest.

For any true fan of the Dogg Pound Gangstas, this is a must-have and if you are a fan of crew leader, Snoop Dogg, then you may want to check this LP out as well, for his family tree is full of talent.

subpar performance from a once-great, cutting edge band. Calculating Infinity and Under the Running board are leaps and bounds above this mediocre album. I don't blame them for switching up their style and trying something different, but if you're looking for the DEP you're used to...this ain't it.

5 out of 5 stars Music of the future.......2007-03-15

I had never heard of The Dillinger Escape Plan before I got this album but I had read some very good reviews about them and I also learned they had collaborated on their previous EP with Mike Patton. So I picked this album not knowing what to expect. My first impression : this album is amazing! This is one of the most complex albums I have ever heard and gives a new meaning to the term Mathcore. While not necessarily hardcore music, The Dillinger have it all in their music. The Faith No More influences are there, especially in the vocals section but worry not, The Dillinger Escape Plan are very original to go off ripping other bands. The album is pretty short in length but each of the songs is so full of ideas that every one of them seems so complete. Give this album a try, since words cannot describe the perfection that lies in it. The Dillinger Escape Plan are leading music to the future!

4 out of 5 stars Dillinger Goes Industrial.......2006-07-21

A much different Dillinger Escape Plan than they showed us before. It is a great CD they toned down the more crazy stuff a little for a much more commercial sound. Don't worry, there are still polyrhythms and various boggling time changes throughout the entire CD. If you haven't heard it yet, pick it up and give it a chance. At first listen I thought it was a bit too commercial for my tastes, but after a few more listens and seeing them perform live just recently. I decided that the boys are still running strong and doing their own thing. Though it may seem kind of like, Dillinger met up with Nine Inch Nails and My Chemical Romance.

4 out of 5 stars An Alabama kragdangle to the sloppybone.......2006-03-15

Okay, any jackass who calls this music "screamo" obviously knows nothing about hardcore music or emo, for that matter.
From the other reviews of some of the DEP haters, these guys "scream incoherently" and noodle around on their guitars.
If you like cheeseball nu-metal (just look at Pantera dude down there) then you're not going to like this album.
If anything, the music's just as technical.
Just because this time around they don't play ridiculously fast polyrhythms like a grindcore song on repeat doesn't mean their new stuff isn't technical.
Honestly, they've gotten stronger as a band.
The only problems I have are a few of the songs, like "Phone Home," "Setting Fire" and "Unretrofied."
Honestly, though, this CD is almost more an excuse to tour (at least in my mind) than it is a Converge-style masterpiece.
They have yet to learn how to make cohesive CDs (like the aforementioned Converge) but they know how to get their current formula down on disc and make it sound goooood.
If you still don't like them, just go see them live; Ben will skewer you on the end of his ESP while Greg shouts in your ear, wiping out the scenesters with a cymbal stand after his legendary firebreathing schtick.
Then they'll murder you, and you'll say, "okay, NOW I get it."

4 out of 5 stars These guys have changed........2005-12-09

Besides the obvious comparisons to former vocalists Mike Patton and Dmitri Minakakis, new DEP vocalist Greg Puciato has created a credible outing here with the (revamped?) Dillinger. I have to wonder about this a little-- the music has been simplified a great deal. This is not Calculating Infinity. But it is rather fascinating all the same, and I recommend it highly. I'm interested in seeing what these guys will do for a follow-up.

4 out of 5 stars Daz at his finest.......2007-07-09

I rememeber when this album came out I had to get it(you see back then you could guarantee that any album off Deathrow was going to be great). I wasnt dissapointed and I still think that Daz is terribly underrated as a producer. The album has a slew of guest features but dont think that only the songs with guest spots are good. Great solo joints like Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back and In California proved you wrong. Kurupt and Daz hammer out DPG classic joints like It's Going Down and Our Daily Bread(back when Kurupt was still spittin'). B-Legit joins in on the smooth Playa Partners and Snoop makes his present felt on O.G. 2pac(RIP), Kurupt and The Outlawz join in on the overlooked gem Initiated. Too Short joins in on the fun in It Might Sound Crazy and Gang Bangin A** Criminal(which feature Tha Gang, Kurupt and Technique) is the hardest song on the album. This album is not without its flaws. Baby Mama Drama is hard on the ears and Only For U is a forced love joint which features horrific singing from Val Young. Thank God For My Life is another skippable track. After these three the rest of the album is smooth sailing. Bottom Line: Daz Dillinger's Retaliation, Revenge And Get Back is a west coast gem that should be in every fan of west coast rap's collection. It's one of the few great albums from Deathrow that wasnt made by Tupac. Daz was still sharp with the flow, the production(with the exception of three songs) was on point and the guest appearances were on fire too. Standout Tracks: GANG BANGIN A** CRIMINAL, PLAYA PARTNERS, IT MIGHT SOUND CRAZY, OUR DAILY BREAD, INITIATED, RETALIATION REVENGE AND GET BACK, O.G., IN CALIFORNIA, OH NO and THE ULTIMATE COME UP.

Daz's debut solo is and average release. it has its moments and its drawbacks. i like he keeps it around the dogg pound vibe and the lyrics are okay. Production is average and the guest are good. it worth checking out and giving it a good listen to.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars for Daz Dillenger's first solo spot..............2006-09-22

This joint was released after Death Row was dismantled and everyone went their seperate ways. Daz was the only recognizable survivor of the Death Row dynasty left. So obvious the results of this joint is mixed. My personal favorite cut on here is "It might sound crazy" with Nate Dogg on the hook.

5 out of 5 stars Daz Puts It Down For The LBC On This Joint!.......2006-09-18

Retaliation Revenge And Get Back comes in early 1998, most definitely not at the height of the G-Funk era, but of course, the album has the feel of it. The beats are bangin from start to finish, with a hungry Daz killing the mic with his killa flows. Daz is both a rapper and producer, both he does extremely well. The best joint is "O.G." where he, Snoop and Nate Dogg unite and bring that mobbin Death Row style they all brought years earlier, over a smooth, both laid back, yet mobbin' beat that defines the LBC sound! "Baby Mama Drama" is a serious analysis on how some fathers get stiffed by their baby mamas, even when they are there for their kids and provide for them, over a laid back G-Funk beat. "Gang Bangin A-- Criminal" is another classic. After a long intro, the song rolls on with a hard knock mobbin' beat and serious flows from Daz, and a whole gang of his ESLB cuddies like Bad Azz, Tray Deee, and many more. Daz puts it down for Cali, on his classic anthem, "In California," over one of those hot lowrider beats, a definite West Coast anthem. There is much much more to offer through the rest of the album. Definitely a must add for your G-Funk and gangsta rap collection.

SUPERB...
Stylish
and concrete

A terrific album here in Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back.
I bought the CD on release date back in 1998.... why am I just now writing about it? I still bust out this album and listen to it to this day!

One has to question why Daz would attempt this album. You're the only star remaining on Death Row Records for the time. You're the head of the label operations. No Limit is stealing the show! There's clearly no hope for a West Coast attempt.....

That's what's so impressive about this album. A strong delivery from Daz Dillinger, whom still pulls out the grey and blue theme- with or without a Dogg Pound label on the album. Kurupt's presense is heavily felt through out and even opens the album.

1. INTRO- Mean, rough production bonds the likes of Kurupt and Tray Dee to present the toughness of The Gang.
3. PLAYA PARTNA- A great track here as B-Legit sprays some slanguage in with a nice Bass guitar rythme.
4. IT MIGHT SOUND CRAZY- Excellent production, cavi and soulful. Appropriately features Too $hort to add Pimpish flavor amongst a "player" track.
5. OUR DAILY BREED- Sequel to track from "Dogg Food" album. Added beats keep this in the winning category as delivery is even stronger in some parts by The Dogg Pound.
6. IN CALIFORNIA- Upbeat, aggressive and street friendly! Lady V adds immensely to the chorus! A stand out single and props to Soopafly on the nice beat here!
7. INITIATED- Album highlight here!! 2pac is featured along with The Outlawz.... A stout performance by all and a smooth line of production here. Nothing animated but bold.
10. O.G.- Excellent tune with Death Row originals Snoop & Nate Dogg. Song easily has "Chronic" days production! Fluent in street issues and drama. Nate steels the show!
13. RIDIN HIGH- W.C. is the partner in crime here. Great casting for the two as the deliver is strong! Jumpin beat with funky, jazzin piano beats that hyber this tune up.

Just to name the stand outs here, the remaining tracks are achieving as well in their own individual ways. Very impressive release for "Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back" as it debuted at number 9 on the Billboards and peaked the West back in for a while.

Stands out in any collection as this album covers so many issues and brings out the Westcoast talent at the same time. Dominating on all aspects. Each song destinctive and critical to the overall aspect. Death Row's Last real winner...

This is clearly Daz Dillinger's best effort to date. Perhaps every now and again it wouldn't hurt for Daz to go back and listen to it as his latest projects are for label income only.
Hopefully the new DPGC reunion album with have as strong of a delivery as this production!!

I just trashed this cd 4 days ago after tryin to like it. Truthfully i never liked dogg pound from day one. So I don't know why I bought this 3 years ago. First off, too many skits. 31 tracks and like 12 skits or somethin like that. A few nothin short of extremely wack disses. And subject matter as limited as always. We all know you a gangsta. You been tellin us since 94. Can you talk about somethin else now?

3 out of 5 stars GOOD, NOT GREAT.......2005-03-21

Daz is my all-time favorite producer and one of my favorite rappers. This is relatively different material considering "Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back" and "R.A.W." are more hardcore. This album is more layed back gangsta rap. A lot of the CD takes shots at Death Row and Kurupt and has guest appearances by Soopafly, Snoop Dogg, and P.F.N. If you get what Daz is about, then you can't really hate on this, you have to listen to it for what it's worth and take it as a branching out type project that wasn't meant to labeled great. The tracks that are good are quality since it is Daz. The only flaw is all the skits that appear after almost every track, that can get annoying. But, if a D.P.G. fan, you gotta get it and add it to the collection, it's not great but it is some alright Daz Dillinger. Don't hate on the misunderstood.

Daz' new album has 31 tracks, the problem being 13 of these are short pointless skits and interludes that make the CDsomewhat annoying to listen to (song, skit, song, skit, Etc.). Of the 18 songs, there's 1 classic, about 6 I skip, and the rest are pretty good to good. After track # 20 there's really only 2 or 3 songs worth listening to, and they're average nothing special. The album features Snoop (2 songs), Soopafly (4 songs -- and a lot of the production), P.F.N. (5 songs) and 1 song each with E White, Goldie Loc & Bad Azz. It also has another message to Kurupt. It comes with a bonus DVD but it's nothing special. A good album to have for his fans.

5 out of 5 stars A small teaser of a disc.......2005-11-23

Just like the review title says, it's a small teaser of a disc to predict things to come, but this album, in my opinion, is their masterpiece with Calculating Infinity close behind. This cd is only about 7-8 minutes in length, but achieves a lot more intensity than a lot of other metal full length albums

4 out of 5 stars Quality not Quantity.......2005-09-12

the Dillinger Escape Plan are brilliant. There's just no other way of explaining how good they really are. I've read the 'bad things' about them..(that they've sold out, that the music makes no sense and goes nowhere, you can't understand what the singer is saying)..but people writing those reviews/saying those things are normally just kids who listen to Trivium and Killswitch Engage. They're not yet ready to sit down and fully listen to something as complex as the Dillinger Escape Plan.

Personally, i respect the Dillinger Escape Plan for being truly different in a genre such as Hardcore/Math-Metal. I respect them also for being excellent musicians. Their songs are often memorable and can be stuck in your head for days. I can't even count how many of their songs get stuck in my head..43% Burnt, Unretrofied, Clip The Apex..Accept Instruction, We Are The Storm..there are alot of songs of theirs that are both insanely technical and catchy.

This E.P is quite short, but with 3 songs on it you'd kind of expect that. I must admit, i bought this for "The Mullet Burden"..but was pleasantly surprised with the other 2 songs. "The Mullet Burden" truly is noisy. Which is good. This whole E.P is noisy, in fact. Which is good. The only catch is that it's quite short, with only 3 songs on it. But then again, it is about quality not quantity..and the Dillinger Escape Plan always delivers quality.

This, i think, is mainly for fans. Probably not a starting point.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant........2005-08-30

Although this EP is certainly overpriced (eight dollars for seven and half minutes of music), one should not deny the quality within. Consisting of only three songs, each pieces stands proudly on its own for possessing the unique sound that The Dillinger Escape Plan is known for. Off-time signatures, somewhat atonal leads, screams and the like. If you're a current Dillinger listener, you know what I speak of.

Although it's difficult to select a stand-out track, I'd say Abe The Cop is perhaps (though completely subjective) the most developed piece here, with many in's and out's that make it consistently interesting throughout. Regardless of personal favorites, and as mentioned before, all three tracks are of a supreme quality.

If you don't mind spending the money (and if you're a fan, you probably don't) that equals out to be more than a dollar per minute here, this is a worthy addition to your Dillinger collection.

Also, just to make it clear, I gave the release four stars for its rather ridiculous price, in which I do realize the band has no control over these matters, although I do try to make it a point to review the product as a whole, rather than one aspect of it.

5 out of 5 stars debut excellente.......2005-04-18

what a phenomenal release...even though it's 3 tracks, it sounds really fricken heavy, but you ust turn the volume up to 11 to get the full effects of the ear piercing screams and overwhelmingly fast loud and heavy guitars!

5 out of 5 stars DEP.......2004-05-03

My biggest complaint is that this album is too short. I think this album is far and away their best. Personally, I do not care for Calculating Infinity as I feel they focused on being overtly aggressive and technical while forgetting about melody. And Irony is A Dead Scene is a great album but not as good as this one.

This album has everything - technical prowess, speed, and melody. True the singer is nothing special but I still like his work on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Worth buying just for War is Over.......2007-03-21

This is a great CD but it would be worth buying only for War is Over, Dillinger's toast over the Errol Thompson/Joe Gibbs dub of George Nooks's take on Tribal War, orignally sung by Little Roy. The song is introduced by a lively spoken exchange in patois between Dillinger and a friend about the peace treaty that was supposed to settle gang violence that had culminated with the infamous Green Bay Massacre in 1978.

The Thompson/Nooks dub begins as Dillinger spouts three spoken lines in stirring patios rhythms, each one bending up in an almost indignant tones. He then lands right on the beat and growls the next two lines in a most menacing manner, before launching into the main part of his toast, "Son, don't take your guns to town, cuz the war is over."

I have not done a good job of describing it. You have to hear it to understand what I mean. It is one the finest demonstrations of Effective Musical Phrasing that I have ever heard. I am very moved every time I listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars "the heart of Jamaica's sound system ~ Dillinger".......2003-05-21

Hip-O brings a masterful album to the forefront "Dillinger:Ultimate Collection", featuring some of the tastiest tracks ever to grace an essential Reggae release ~ cleverly executed rhymes that seem to fall into place as if by design. All twenty two selections take on a style of innovative characteristic, destined to make anyone an instant fan and follower of this truly gifted artist. Must make mention of a few classic pick tunes "COKANE IN MY BRAIN", "DREAD CALLED FRED", "CORNBREAD" (extended version), "CUP OF TEA" and "MELTING POT" ~ all songs under one banner and issued on one single CD, long awaited as Dillinger regains the international spotlight for which he justly deserves. This is a keeper for all fans of Reggae and the rights of free people ~ which Dillinger provides with his winning lyrical performances...gotta love it!

4 out of 5 stars CALIFORNIA GREATNESS.......2005-03-21

This is a pretty good CD. With Daz repping Southern California and JT repping Northern California. It has more of a Bay Area rap sound to it production wise but you can't go wrong with the West Coast sound and quality of all the beats. This is a gangster album with a lot of Northern California rappers guest starring and a spot by Kurupt. I wish Daz would have produced some tracks, but again, the production is very good. I don't think there is a track that I don't like. Independent Bubble f/ San Quinn and E-40, I'm A Boss f/ C-Bo, Yukmouth, & Dru Down, Sweet Love f/ Rappin' 4-Tay and Kurupt are my favorite tracks. If a true West Coast fan, get it for sure...

5 out of 5 stars A TIGHT CD.......2005-02-28

FIRST OFF I WANNA SAY THAT I AM A BIG DAZ AND JT FAN. I'VE HEARD THERE LAST ALBUM "LONGBEACH TO FILLMORE" AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT THIS ALBUM IS WAY BETTER. I HAVE TO SAY THAT I LUV 13 OUT OF THE 16 TRACKS SPECIALLY 1-8. IF U LIKE DAZ,JT,E-40,DRU DOWN,KURUPT,C-BO AND ALL OTHER WESTCOAST RAPPERS, THIS IS A MUST HAVE ALBUM. BUY IT, U WONT REGRET IT

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 star collabo.......2004-12-09

Daz & JT are back again for their 2nd album together in less than 6 months. It has no classics but no bad songs, most are average with a couple being better. The beats are nothing special and are handled solely by Sean T, unfortunatley none by either Daz or JT!! Not every song has Daz & JT on it together and most are Daz and guests or JT and guests, and there are alot of guests. Has 4 unlisted tracks on it as well. A good album to have for fans of the 2 but for non-fans they've both done better work, even their "Longbeach 2 Fillmoe" album together is slightly better than this.

#1 - 8 (f/ E-40 & San Quinn)
#2 - 7 (f/ Yukmouth, Dru Down, C-Bo -- beat is from one of C-Bo's songs)
#3 - 9
#4 - 7 (f/ Sean T, San Quinn, Millo)
#5 - 7 (f/ San Quinn)
#6 - 7.5 (f/ Jay-Z, Kurupt, Memphis Bleek, and Beanie Sigel -- also on DJ Clue's "Professional 2")
#7 - 7.5 (f/ Mac Mall, Yukmouth & Sean T -- has same beat as the song by the same name on "Longbeach 2 Fillmoe")
#8 - 8
#9 - 7.5 (f/ mississippi mike & san quinn)
#10 - 8 (f/ gamblaz & troopa)
#11 - 7.5 (f/ Rappin' 4-tay & kurupt -- also on 4-tay's "Intorduction 2 Mackin")
#12 - 8.5 (f/ killa tay, gamblaz, cosmo)
#13 - 6.5
#14 - 8 (about snitches)
#15 - 8 (good beat)
#16 - 7

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly suprised.......2001-12-05

I bought this album not knowing what to expect. I did, however, expect Daz to have been involved in the production of this album. I also expected it to feature Snoop. Not unreasonably, as it claims to feature Snoop on the front cover. The production is not by Daz, its by someone I've never heard of, and who's name I can't remember, but it is excellent, so no complaints there. I feel that this album gains nothing from the two Dogg Pound songs included, especially the one featuring Jay-Z, which can also be found on 'Tha Dogg Pound 2002'. Remove these tracks and the album flows nicely. Daz Dillinger is one of the best rappers around today. JT the Bigga Figga is also very good and sounds a bit like Xzibit. 'Game 4 Sale' features loads of other rappers who are previously unknown to me, but very good. This is an excellent West Coast album, and a nice mixture of familiar 'Daz', with unfamiliar.

5 out of 5 stars Way Too Tight For Human Consumption.......2001-07-01

This has to be the best album of the year 2001. Daz and JT hooked up some dope beats for some of the best rappers in the game. I loved how they added Mac Mall to the song "Game For Sale." The great tracks paved the way for head nodding. I really liked hearing San Quinn on many of the tracks. I wished we would have heard from Kurupt on more than the "Change The Game" remix, which happens to be TRACK 6. Though all and all, I could listen to this album for a full day and not get tired of it. The production was much too ill, I am telling you. This is the best album of 2001.
