This fairly obscure hip-hop album (actually titled 'One Mill-Yon') was playing on a friend's cd player one summer back in '96, and after hearing it once I searched for years, trying to track it down. It's hilarious. The standout track is "'Twas the Night Before the First," the saga of a down-and-out crack dealer who is trying to hold on to his stash until "the night before the first"--when welfare checks come in and customers come calling--but is repeatedly thwarted by marauding pterodactyl. It's surreal, over-the-top, and side-splittingly funny (okay, crack addiction isn't funny, but...).

Mac Mill, the Dangler, and CT are all distinct characters with their own agendas in the song, alternating bravado and pathos in their various ploys to come up with their drug money ("Let's all remember/CT came through on the weekend/with a big-a** microwave, straight geekin' and tweakin'/But it was hella old, he couldn't get none...").

This is no grim gangsta' social commentary, though. The entire album is tongue-in-cheek, layered over deep funk beats that you can actually dance to. The humor evident throughout is not mean-spirited. The Pterodactyl Song never fails to make me laugh, and I love to play it for my friends. This album is one of my favorite antidotes for a bad mood.
