Album Description
The knotty-headed terror Tame One is back with the sophomore effort, O.G. Bobby Johnson. After solidifying his history in Hip-Hop as half of the 90's rap duo the Artifacts, Tame has gone on to achieve solo success with last years' When Rappers Attack, as well as his release earlier this year with Cage as the Leak Bros. The album is produced by Mighty Mi (The High & Mighty), Camu Tao (Definitive Jux), and newcomer Charlie Chan. True EC fans won't be disappointed by the gritty nature of this release and Tame's undeniably raw MC skills. Welcome to the next chapter in the Weathermen saga!!Customer Reviews:
It's Not Awful.......2006-10-11
One thing I've noticed about this disc is that it feels more like Tame's. "When Rappers Attack" was definitely ill, but it was mostly full of Eastern Conference artists and affiliates. It seems like Tame had more of his people working on this one. I can appreciate that he's doing what he wants to do, even though it's not always as pleasing to the ear.
This CD has sort of an experimental feel, and some of it works. My favorites are the tracks with slower, more laid-back beats. "Notda Okeydoke," a druggie track with a depressed-sounding beat, got a lot of hate for its long instrumental section, but I enjoy it. It has a mood I kind of connect with. "Arizona Iced Tea" also has a slower tempo and not much intensity to it, but it can work if you appreciate the tone it sets. "Get a Jar," another track about drugs, has a kind of spaced-out feel that works pretty well. My favorite track is "PPP," also laid-back but in a kind of happy, catchy way. This track also stands out because it almost completely lacks bass and drums. "Soldierz" is also a success because of its simple but hardcore beat. Note that while I enjoy all these tracks, they're kind of different so there's a good chance other people won't.
Failures are "Blakout Status," which is just boring, "Hydromatic" with its annoying mechanical drum sounds, and "Lately," which has a beat that just doesn't work. "Moccafella" and "Get Paid" don't do much for me, either. "High Fidelity" is alright, taking it back to that Eastern Conference sound that's mostly missing on this album
I've pretty much just been grading the beats. As far as lyrics, Tame is good all the way through, not amazing but consistent, with his trademark voice and flow. I don't remember that any of the guests were impressive, though. So like I said, some of this album works, it's not a disaster, but mostly for more-than-casual Tame One fans.
Sloppy seconds on O.G. Bobby Johnson.......2006-05-25
The problem with this album entirely lies within the production of this effort. Not just the beats, but the whole package. The beats are subpar or almost throw-aways on a majority of the album and the lyrics are often mumbly or recorded poorly.
The album does have its share of cuts, but nothing of the quality we know Tame-One can deliver. Compared to "When Rappers Attack" or "Leak Bros," this is just a sloppy packaged LP that lacks general focus. This may be due to the amount of weed smoke that eminates from the speakers when listening to this LP. But when comparing it to the drugged out "Leak Bros" LP, "Leak Bros" still maintains a focus and throughline.
Although the "liberal arts" crowd will probably enjoy its purple haze esque qualities, I'd suggest the prior mentioned LPs or anything from the Artifacts for a better sampling of Tame-One.
Biggest dissapointment of '05 so far............2005-06-08
TameOne: From out of left field with a great album........2005-04-10
