5 out of 5 stars "The Godfather of Memphis Funk.".......2006-04-17

So it says on the back of the album cover. It's no lie; this CD is hot!! Talk about funky! I think Rufus gave James Brown a run for his money some times. Here you get 18 of his funkiest and finest. From the title track which sounds like it will never end, (and why should it?) to classics like "Itch and Scratch" and "Sophisticated Sissy." On some of these that have dance names in the title, they all kind of sound the same. Rufus announces he's back with a new dance for everyone, says what it is and how to do it. Those are "Do The Funky Penguin", "Do The Push and Pull", and "Funky Robot" among others. It's pretty cool; even if you don't know how to do these dances, just do something that makes sense. These songs definitely have such colossal grooves to them. Bass lines and drum riffs are sweet!
The CD has inlay liner notes about Rufus' biographical info and his involovement with Stax and the songs presentes. So check Rufus Thomas out. He was middle-aged when he did all these songs, but that made no difference. He still could make life a dance party and that's what this CD is all about: a dance party!
As he said, "I ain't gettin' older; I'm gettin' better."

5 out of 5 stars totally jawesome.......2005-02-16

These guys are totally amazing. I strongly advise anyone and everyone to see them perform. While the reordings are fun to listen to, and you can totally get your jam on, there is nothing like hearing these guys live, and being a part of their show. They are ten hundred percent better in person, and I honestly believe that you cannot live a full and complete life without attending at least one. The albums are good, and the songs are rockin. http://www.grandbuffet.com for tour info and additional recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Today's Buffet is... Grand.......2003-10-17

You listen to them and think, oh, they're ok. Then with a few more tastes you'll get their other CD's (Which I find even better). Even more listening and you'll get psyched and travel to a concert. Whoah! Now you're so hooked that you search for hours on end just to find songs from their rare first CD, Scrooge McRock, and go to their websites for a few more free mp3's. Then you'll go to every other concert they have in your area, ever, and just chill. by the way, their other CD's are Cigarette Beach, Undercover Angels, and Pittsburgh Hearts. Great Music for anybody to own. Their rhymes in some of the less popular songs are actually the best when you listen to them carefully enough. Definitely not backround music, dont pump the bass, and phaze out the echoes to look for the punchlines, look at the other reviews for some more details. That's unfortunate, people are receptive. It's like calling a guys who beats his kids to protect them. Peace.

5 out of 5 stars Not just cool... REAL cool........2003-06-10

Whoa. These cats are the real deal.

Don't worry if you don't like this album on first (or second or third) listen... you may have to reconfigure your brain before you dig it fully. The first couple listens you'll wonder what they're smoking, the next couple you're jaw will drop trying to keep up, and a few listens after that you'll be laughing and grooving along at the same time.

Grand Buffet is a Pittsburgh-based hip hop duo, Lord Grunge and Grape-A-Don. Their aim as musicians seems to be making your head explode like that scene from "Scanners." The lyrics are a high velocity stream of seemingly non-sensical non-sequiturs set to synth-heavy beats... the kind of beats that make you want to turn the bass way up, though you probably won't for fear of missing a punchline. (Sorry, but trying to describe exactly what they do demands a run-on sentence.)

It took a few listens to grow on me, but now I don't hesitate to say that this album is a full on classic. It may only be 28 minutes long, but it's packed so tight with amazingly creative lyrics and fun beats that you'll be listening to it for months and still get something new from it each time. My mind has officially been blown.

To give you an idea: "Double Crazy" has a chorus that sounds like a singing Jimmy Stewart impersonator. Grape-A-Don's Dad shows up on "You're On Fire" to remind you that you ARE on fire and you ARE going to H-E-double-hockey-sticks. The first twenty seconds of "Code #0322-02332" sound a bit like background music from a Jane Fonda workout video before kicking into some fuzzed out, high energy beats which the boys lay some mind-boggling rhymes over...Buy this now!

5 out of 5 stars My Eyes Are Wide Open.......2003-03-15

Would that I believed in the everyday use of swear words, for I can feel tons of the overwhelming me RIGHT NOW. I am MOVED. The scope of Grand Buffet's work is incredible. Sparkle Classic is completely fresh, and unlike anything you have ever heard. Calling it Rap is technically correct, but the images conjured by the word don't do GB justice. You can really only understand the Majesty of the Grand Buffet after you've heard it. Besides being their longest CD (I think), Sparkle Classic is the perfect place to start your GB devotion because every track on it is ten hundred percent awesome. And that is at least twice as good as 300%. Believe me.

4 out of 5 stars all yinz can eat at the grand buffet.......2003-02-18

This album is fresh. Great grooves with fun lyrics. my only beef is that it's less than 30 minutes long. i want more buffet!

Talk about buried treasure. Catalyst's The Funkiest Band You Never Heard, a two-disc reissue, is a long-overdue reintroduction to a mostly forgotten Philadelphia quartet whose four early-'70s albums bridged the gap between avant-garde jazz and funk and soul with delicious ease. Containing the albums Catalyst, Unity, A Tear and A Smile, and Perception, the two-disc set does have occasional moments when things sound a bit old-fashioned--like on the set's very first track, "Ain't It the Truth," or the very last, a forgettable cover of the Jackson Five's "Got to Be There". But in between, things mostly sound dated in the best way: this is the '70s, sure, but it's the '70s of the far-out electrified funk of Miles Davis, the avant-groove of Herbie Hancock's Sextant, the experimentalism of early Weather Report, the Eastern leanings of Yusef Lateef (especially on Odean Pope's oboe solo on "East"), and the funky soul of Stevie Wonder. Saxophonist Pope and pianist Eddie Green were both standout players, but what comes across on lengthy jams like "Celestial Bodies" and "Perception" is an unshakable feeling of group chemistry and adventurous risk-taking that makes the music here sound remarkably fresh and farsighted. --Ezra Gale

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!.......2004-07-15

I first heard Catalyst on a rare compilation called "Coolin'", part of the Freedom Jazz Dance series that took a look at 70s funky jazz from the Muse label. Now, thanks to this fantastic collection "The Funkiest Band You Never Heard" I can finally hear every note they recorded. AWESOME!!!

5 out of 5 stars electic jazz/funk at it's best.......2001-04-14

I cannot believe that I haven't heard of these guys before now. Catalyst is this awesome Philly-based band that can play funk, straight-ahead jazz, rock, avant-garde jazz and even some classical. This is one of the best album purchases I've made in awhile and if you listen to Herbie's "Headhunters" era, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, or even Sun Ra; definitely check these guys out. "Shorter Street" is a personal favorite.

4 out of 5 stars Eclecticism that works.......2000-07-06

The early '70s jazz fusion bands not only radically changed the parameters of the "jazz sound" by the use of electric instruments and electronics; many of them absorbed the range of musical styles that were then new to American popular culture, mainly Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, East Indian, and sub-Saharan African forms. This approach reflected the growing sense of pan-Africanist political identity and the expanded consciousness that had come about through the expanded sexual mores, religious and philosophical discoveries, and the use of a wide range of drugs.

Catalyst, from Philly, were definitely in the thick of this eclectic fusion movement, and this set of all four of their Muse albums, superbly remastered by Gene Paul, reveals the band to be one of the era's most-accomplished. The players of Catalyst were slightly older than those in some of the other fusion bands, which may account for their continued use of distinct post-bop motifs in some cases and in their use of largely-acoustic ensembles, barring Eddie Green's electric piano. But all the contemporary styles of that time can be heard here: Eastern modes and timbres on "East" and "Jabali"; Afro-Latin elements on "Suite for Albeniz" (which is also a classical fusion, carrying forward the sound of "Sketches of Spain",) "Bahia", and "Ile Ife"; and a soul-jazz/funk style that ranges from light radio-fare ("Got to be There") to an ominous suite in two parts ("The Demon, Parts 1 and 2".)

Simply put, the band's name says it all.

I'm a little wary of the Laser Light series, but I saw this cd as a close out at Tower Records. I think it was 5 or 6 dollars. Man, am I glad I picked it up. It's hot. If you enjoy Maceo Parker style funk/jazz you'll love it. I've picked up a couple other Jimmy McGriff cds but this is still the first one I reach for...

Album Description

East Of Rampart Street, New Orleans, La is where hookers rule the street, dealers make their deals, and where life as we know it gets funkier with each passing day. East Of Rampart Street is where everybody is nobody, everything means nothing and nothing is ever as it seems. East Of Rampart Street is the new recording from Brian Stoltz ("funky" Meters, Neville Brothers, Bob Dylan).

"East Of Rampart Street is a fundamentally funky CD with smart, catchy songs that will last, a groovy disc that will sound good today, tomorrow and ten years from now." H. Andrews Schwartz - Offbeat Magazine, New Orleans, La

"The fastest selling record in the store" - La. Music Factory, New Orleans, La.

On East Of Rampart Street Stoltz explores much of his wide and diverse past, from funky uptown beats to the dark atmospherics of a Daniel Lanois production, the listener gets a panoramic view of life in New Orleans. East Of Rampart Street contains thirteen solid songs penned by Stoltz as well as guest appearances from Papa Funk Art Neville and George Porter Jr. of the Meters, as well as Ivan Neville and a host of New Orleans luminaries.

"You get one hour, one minute and seven seconds and thirteen tracks of mostly thick unadulterated funk! This CD is steeped in, and drips the funk. It's the kind of stuff that can get you a speeding ticket, if you're not careful. Just follow the bounce and have a ball"! Paul Toracinta - Radlist review

5 out of 5 stars My Funkometer BLEW UP!.......2006-08-15

I am listening to this CD as I type this review and can attest to the fact that Mr. Stoltz has mega guitar chops,it sounds like he squeezes the neck for every last bit of sound he can get out of it.

SUPERIOR, well written songs and arrangements, deep greasy New Orleans flavor in every bite, Mr. Stoltz is supported by Art and Ivan Neville, The amazing George Porter Jr.,and other stellar New Orleans musicians.

Make no mistake, this is the REAL DEAL, from jugle funk to walking blues in the style of Fats Domino.

RARELY do you hear records this good anymore, a real treasure!

Medicine for the soul, a stellar album, GET IT NOW!

5 out of 5 stars New Orleans' own Jimi Hendrix.......2005-02-08

New Orleans guitarist Brian Stoltz is one of the most talented musicians to come out of this great music town. He has played withe everyone from the Neville Brothers to Bob Dylan to Dr. John. Now this solo CD features him with some of his musicial buddies who happened to be members of great bands. Brian tours with The Funky Meters when not working in the studios. This album showcases not only his New Orleans blood lines, but also has displays of his appreciation for Hendrix, Robert Johnson, Guitar Slim and Muddy Waters.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Inspirational Jazz Music!.......2004-12-17

This CD was sent to me by representative of EnSound Entertainment. Mark Bunney is a native of Great Britain. He was skilled in the music arts since he was 3 years old. He currently attends the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston and works under the guidance of fellow Saxophonist, Walter Beasley. His new CD, "Coming Home" gives his listener a mix of Jazz, Gospel and R&B flavors. I especially enjoyed the tracks, "Morning Devotion" and "Heavenbound". There are many words I can say about this CD, Soulful! Enlightening! Uplifting! Mark is a Christian and lives by the biblical scripture that happens to by my favorite and what I live by as well, Philippians 4-13. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me". Mark has a brilliant future ahead of him as a musician and I look forward to many more releases from him.

5 out of 5 stars Funkiest Band, Indeed..........2003-04-18

I'm a little wary of the Laser Light series, but I saw this cd as a close out at Tower Records. I think it was 5 or 6 dollars. Man, am I glad I picked it up. It's hot. If you enjoy Maceo Parker style funk/jazz you'll love it. I've picked up a couple other Jimmy McGriff cds but this is still the first one I reach for...

        4 out of 5 stars Funky?...This is spunky........2001-06-21

The organ grinds and the groove jumps out it's seat. Shake it.

        5 out of 5 stars Simply kick-ass.......1999-08-24

Jimmy and the band play high energy blues, funk, and jazz. Nothing fancy here, just great organ solos and danceable tunes. I love it!
