perfect score for a perfect movie.......2007-02-19
The "Third Man Theme" (also known as the "Harry Lime Theme") is alternately brittle, jaunty, bittersweet, romantic, wry, and even sardonic piece of music--which fits the mood of the story and the film perfectly -- that, once heard, can't be forgotten.
The "Third Man Theme" turned Anton Karas into a wealthy man after 28 years of toiling in obscurity an relative poverty in Vienna.
One night, Carol Reed was passing by a wine tavern where growers offer their own wines for sale directly, and heard Anton Karas's playing in the background. Reed had never heard a zither before and found the sound to be attractive. He approached Karas and persuaded him to play for him at his hotel, and made a recording, which Reed brought back to the studio to test. He liked the effect when the zither's sound was placed against the recorded dialogue and, ignoring the protests of many around him, hired Karas and brought him to London for 12 weeks.
Anton Karas screened the movie hundreds of times, devising music for each scene. The Third Man ended up with a vast amount of music, scored in virtually every scene of its 104 minutes. Ironically, the piece that became known as the "Third Man Theme" was something that Anton Karas had written two decades earlier and hadn't played in over 15 years. As he later explained to Reed, playing the zither for a whole night for tips was hard work, and one tended to play the easiest pieces the most often, to save the fingers.
Other zither players never got it to sound just right. The truth was that as recorded for the movie, "The Third Man Theme" was one of the first practical examples of overdubbing on a hit record, rivaling Les Paul's work--Anton Karas had gotten just the right effect working underneath Reed's kitchen table, and had gotten the piece just right by recording and mixing more than one zither part.
The Third Man was finished and prepared for release, and Reed and the production company, London Films, tried to raise interest in it through the music. None of the record companies, however, was interested in recording Karas or releasing the "Third Man Theme." The music was too strange and different, and although British movies had produced some soundtrack successes in the past, those were usually more conventional light classical pieces, not a jangly piece of music played on a central European folk instrument.

Product Description
Jeremy Nicholas writes: “Phrases that chill the heart: ‘I want a volunteer from the audience.’ ‘Is this your car, sir?’ ‘Have we shown you our holiday snaps?’ Or how about “Tonight’s lecture is on the art of writing comedy.” Go to that seminar and one thing you know for sure in advance is that you are consigning yourself to an evening devoid of any humor. Dissecting comedy, analyzing jokes or, in this case, comic songs, has all the allure of pulling off the wings of a butterfly to see how it flies. Setting off writing a comic song is rather like being your own crossword compiler, designing the grid, filling in all the squares, setting your own clues. No, it’s not, really. It’s more like taking a pile of kid’s building bricks and making a spectacular skyscraper from them. No, that’s not it either. But there are elements of both that are pertinent (a good word for seminars).” In other words, comedy (and comic songwriting) is hard work. Think of the last time you told a joke and it didn’t come off. The material was right but maybe the delivery was off. But remember the joy when the response was perfect: not only did they laugh, but you sensed the anticipation: this is going to be funny. And for this album, the anticipation certainly pays off. Anyone who grew up in the 1950’s and 1960’s will recall the wonderful humor of the works of Tom Lehrer, the classic HMV (Angel in this country) LP’s of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. More recently we’ve seen how Stephen Sondheim and William Bolcom can easily move back and forth between the serious and the humorous. And just to prove that comedy can be serious business, we have the participation of Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the most highly regarded concert and recital pianists as accompanist and composer, joined by his wife Jody Karin Applebaum. Her resume includes performances of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and St. Matthew Passion, Handel’s Messiah, to contemporary works by Stephen Albert, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Gorecki. Together they have performed in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Canada, England and the Middle East. Together they have recorded music of Britten, Schoenberg, Bolcom, Wolpe, Weill, Satie and Poulenc. Here both they and you have some fun for a change!Customer Reviews:

Green Sounds From A Not So Green Artist.......2004-01-27
Magnitude ~ One key thing to an album like a good story is the opener. "Magnitude" does it's job setting the sound with the mid-tempo synth keys and builds upon sparse bass & jazzy percussion for this particular track. The hook throughout the song as well as many others on the album is Moka only using his sing-song vocals. What sets this hook apart is some distortion effect that makes him sound extra spacey and blunted. Fantastically placed song
Not The Man I Used Know ft/ Sun Spot Jonz ~ This song features the first guest on the album in Battle Axe Warrior and Living Legends crewman, Sun Spot Jonz. This song is great to me because of the fast pace set by the drum, bass and Moka's speeded up delivery to catch up with it, showing that Moka can diversify his flow. Topically this appears to deal with the two reflecting upon personal progression and dealing with one's own change through time and sometimes catching your self and not recognizing who you've become, but when they say it doesn't sound as lame. The production again provided by Moka, contains the usual piano loop but with cuts thrown in and synthesizer in the background to add that little extra something.
Invisible ~ My favourite song on the album. Short but sweet. A beat by Ron Contour based around throbbing syrupy bass & keys with a vibraphone sound interjected. The topic matter deals with Moka's love of music and reflection on the hip-hop game. Using the best catchiest hook on the album sung by Moka:
"/although you can't see it, but you know it's there cuz you feel it/
/although you can't see it, but it feels so good and you need it/"
Crunch ft/ Mad Child & Prevail ~ This is basically a Swollen Members track. If you do not like the group you probably won't like this cut. The production by Paul Nice is some of the darkest on the LP, but keeps within the core sound. It helps incorporate Perv 1 & Mad Child's use of dark imagery along with Moka's laid back vibe. It's another key laced beat but full of weird background noises and the keys are more deep and pounding. It is essentially a posse cut with battle rhymes in full effect.
These are the cuts that are most interesting to me but there is plenty more great songs with funky beats, bomb diggity rhymes and kool guests. Those looking for fresh sounds check this release and others by Battle Axe Records. 3 stars nothing ground breaking but definatley head nodding.

such amazing pop.......2001-02-26
Another brilliant record.......2001-01-16
Lime Green Girl gets off to a great start, with the mid-tempo "Caroline" and its grimy (but not dirty) guitars and understated melody, which reminds me somewhat of "This Way Out" - era Idaho. The next song "Bring Me The Shears", my current favorite track, has heartstopping chorus that digs into my brain every time I hear it. The rest of the album prety much follows the lead of these two songs - alternating between woozy post-shoegaze ("I Remember Swimming") to frenetic indie-pop (for lack of a better term) workouts like "Purple Milk and Yr. Pink Sky" and "Cellophane". All in all, Lime Green Girl is another near-perfect gem of an album from one of the most overlooked bands on Earth.
Oh, and as a bonus, Lime Green Girl also contains seven classic Black Watch songs from all four of the group's previous albums, which is a perfect initiation for those who are hearing Black Watch for the first time. In all, to quote Jack Rabid (in so many words) of Big Takeover fame, this album is imperative listening for those who think literate and heartfelt, yet gutsy, pop music is a thing of the past; This record will change your mind.
