5 out of 5 stars perfect score for a perfect movie.......2007-02-19

Carol Reed's veteran cinematographer Robert Krasker's quirky angles under Reed's direction perfectly framed the ready-made-for-an-art designer bombed out shadows and stark, isolated street lights of post-war Vienna and its underworld. Unique to cinema history the whole score (but for some canned incidental cafe music) was just the brilliant zither playing of Anton Karas, adding his nuances to every dramatic transition. Krasker won an Oscar, and Karas was nominated.

The "Third Man Theme" (also known as the "Harry Lime Theme") is alternately brittle, jaunty, bittersweet, romantic, wry, and even sardonic piece of music--which fits the mood of the story and the film perfectly -- that, once heard, can't be forgotten.

The "Third Man Theme" turned Anton Karas into a wealthy man after 28 years of toiling in obscurity an relative poverty in Vienna.

One night, Carol Reed was passing by a wine tavern where growers offer their own wines for sale directly, and heard Anton Karas's playing in the background. Reed had never heard a zither before and found the sound to be attractive. He approached Karas and persuaded him to play for him at his hotel, and made a recording, which Reed brought back to the studio to test. He liked the effect when the zither's sound was placed against the recorded dialogue and, ignoring the protests of many around him, hired Karas and brought him to London for 12 weeks.

Anton Karas screened the movie hundreds of times, devising music for each scene. The Third Man ended up with a vast amount of music, scored in virtually every scene of its 104 minutes. Ironically, the piece that became known as the "Third Man Theme" was something that Anton Karas had written two decades earlier and hadn't played in over 15 years. As he later explained to Reed, playing the zither for a whole night for tips was hard work, and one tended to play the easiest pieces the most often, to save the fingers.

Other zither players never got it to sound just right. The truth was that as recorded for the movie, "The Third Man Theme" was one of the first practical examples of overdubbing on a hit record, rivaling Les Paul's work--Anton Karas had gotten just the right effect working underneath Reed's kitchen table, and had gotten the piece just right by recording and mixing more than one zither part.

The Third Man was finished and prepared for release, and Reed and the production company, London Films, tried to raise interest in it through the music. None of the record companies, however, was interested in recording Karas or releasing the "Third Man Theme." The music was too strange and different, and although British movies had produced some soundtrack successes in the past, those were usually more conventional light classical pieces, not a jangly piece of music played on a central European folk instrument.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant "ethnic" melodies.......2007-01-22

The tunes on this disc have a nice, comforting sound. Some of the selections are haunting, some have a peasant-liveliness. Nothing great or revolutionary, but plain good zither music, very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Third Man & Other Original Records.......2006-11-10

We bought it for a friend. They loved it.

4 out of 5 stars The first man of the zither.......2006-03-10

The CD didn't sound as good as the movie sound track. Ity sounded a bit rushed as if the sampling during the transfer was not sufficient

You've been looking for the original version of the music in "The Third Man", right? Every other CD on the market wouldn't work for you. But lucky for you, this is the one! Don't go wrong.

Product Description

Jeremy Nicholas writes: “Phrases that chill the heart: ‘I want a volunteer from the audience.’ ‘Is this your car, sir?’ ‘Have we shown you our holiday snaps?’ Or how about “Tonight’s lecture is on the art of writing comedy.” Go to that seminar and one thing you know for sure in advance is that you are consigning yourself to an evening devoid of any humor. Dissecting comedy, analyzing jokes or, in this case, comic songs, has all the allure of pulling off the wings of a butterfly to see how it flies. Setting off writing a comic song is rather like being your own crossword compiler, designing the grid, filling in all the squares, setting your own clues. No, it’s not, really. It’s more like taking a pile of kid’s building bricks and making a spectacular skyscraper from them. No, that’s not it either. But there are elements of both that are pertinent (a good word for seminars).” In other words, comedy (and comic songwriting) is hard work. Think of the last time you told a joke and it didn’t come off. The material was right but maybe the delivery was off. But remember the joy when the response was perfect: not only did they laugh, but you sensed the anticipation: this is going to be funny. And for this album, the anticipation certainly pays off. Anyone who grew up in the 1950’s and 1960’s will recall the wonderful humor of the works of Tom Lehrer, the classic HMV (Angel in this country) LP’s of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. More recently we’ve seen how Stephen Sondheim and William Bolcom can easily move back and forth between the serious and the humorous. And just to prove that comedy can be serious business, we have the participation of Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the most highly regarded concert and recital pianists as accompanist and composer, joined by his wife Jody Karin Applebaum. Her resume includes performances of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and St. Matthew Passion, Handel’s Messiah, to contemporary works by Stephen Albert, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Gorecki. Together they have performed in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Canada, England and the Middle East. Together they have recorded music of Britten, Schoenberg, Bolcom, Wolpe, Weill, Satie and Poulenc. Here both they and you have some fun for a change!

5 out of 5 stars A Trancendental Sense of Humor!!!!!!.......2005-07-14

As an amateur pianist, I know how it is to play music of different styles for different occasions. I also have a slightly skewered sense of humor as well as a love of serious classical music. So on my shelves I have Dr. Demento as well as Mahler, Broadway Shows as well as Shostakovich. Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the best pianist nowadays because he makes the most hardest piece of music sound easy, is married to Jody Karin Applebaum, a wonderful singer. They have recorded the Cabaret songs of Bolcom, Britten and Fredrich Hollaender and now turn their attention to comedy songs from many eras. Much of this repertoire is taken from Sarah Walker's Cd on Hyperion. Applebaum's diction is very clear and every song has a different mood and different voices and accents when needed. Comparisons between William Bolcom and Joan Morris are inevitable. Bolcom's "Lime Jello Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise" is also included. The program notes are written by Jeremy Nicholas, who has provided us with very informative program notes for Hyperion CD's, and who has written some wonderful songs such as "Usherette's Blues" and "Place Settings". Tom Lehrer's classic "Masochism Tango" makes an appearance (which is also on one of Dr. Demento's greatest hits CD's).Hamelin's recordings and performances have one thing that many pianist's do not have-HUMOR (when it's needed, of course). Here, he gets to put it to good use, and you can tell that they're having fun. This is a live recording, so there is much laughing from the audience, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Hamelin keeps suprising me with his CD's and repertoire choices, and this is no exception. Let's have some more, please!!! (maybe Dave Frishberg, more Flanders and Swann?).

3 out of 5 stars Green Sounds From A Not So Green Artist.......2004-01-27

Do you like underground/alternative hip-hop music that brings a fresh sound to the table? If you answered yes to that question than this is a release for you. Comepareable to the likes of the Hieroglyphics crew, the Spooks, Jurassic 5 & Aceyalone, but with a unique sound all his own comes Moka Only of the Swollen Members crew, straight out the left coast of Canada. Now most Canadian rappers aren't known for consistent quality and proficiency in releases but Moka delivers both with this almost his 20th release. Consistently coming out with hot music year after year whether solo or in a collabo, continuing with this release. For those not familiar with him he gains the title of "the Canadian Common" because of his similar vocal style and self reflectiveness. Although Common is a great hip-hop artist Moka is more "complete" being able to rap, sing and produce all with great outcomes. As Moka says in his linear notes this album is mostly a synthetic sound, with most tracks lead by key board grooves. Moka handles the production duties on half the album while the rest is done by underground alike-minded producers the likes of Paul Nice & Ron Contour. They all develop a consistent sound that is funky with creative keys, syrupy and bumping bass, complimentary backing beats and other interesting elements. Now I'll talk about some of the tracks...

Magnitude ~ One key thing to an album like a good story is the opener. "Magnitude" does it's job setting the sound with the mid-tempo synth keys and builds upon sparse bass & jazzy percussion for this particular track. The hook throughout the song as well as many others on the album is Moka only using his sing-song vocals. What sets this hook apart is some distortion effect that makes him sound extra spacey and blunted. Fantastically placed song

Not The Man I Used Know ft/ Sun Spot Jonz ~ This song features the first guest on the album in Battle Axe Warrior and Living Legends crewman, Sun Spot Jonz. This song is great to me because of the fast pace set by the drum, bass and Moka's speeded up delivery to catch up with it, showing that Moka can diversify his flow. Topically this appears to deal with the two reflecting upon personal progression and dealing with one's own change through time and sometimes catching your self and not recognizing who you've become, but when they say it doesn't sound as lame. The production again provided by Moka, contains the usual piano loop but with cuts thrown in and synthesizer in the background to add that little extra something.

Invisible ~ My favourite song on the album. Short but sweet. A beat by Ron Contour based around throbbing syrupy bass & keys with a vibraphone sound interjected. The topic matter deals with Moka's love of music and reflection on the hip-hop game. Using the best catchiest hook on the album sung by Moka:

"/although you can't see it, but you know it's there cuz you feel it/
/although you can't see it, but it feels so good and you need it/"

Crunch ft/ Mad Child & Prevail ~ This is basically a Swollen Members track. If you do not like the group you probably won't like this cut. The production by Paul Nice is some of the darkest on the LP, but keeps within the core sound. It helps incorporate Perv 1 & Mad Child's use of dark imagery along with Moka's laid back vibe. It's another key laced beat but full of weird background noises and the keys are more deep and pounding. It is essentially a posse cut with battle rhymes in full effect.

These are the cuts that are most interesting to me but there is plenty more great songs with funky beats, bomb diggity rhymes and kool guests. Those looking for fresh sounds check this release and others by Battle Axe Records. 3 stars nothing ground breaking but definatley head nodding.

    5 out of 5 stars great.......2002-12-14

a laid back moka masterpiece definately up there with his other great albums like mount unpleasat, everyday details and road life

a classic feelgood album also peep ab rude and j5 for more stuff like this

5 out of 5 stars Canadian but not BAcon.......2001-12-15

TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT...This album is on par with all the feel good albums of all time.. and the guest spots are all on point here.. Moka is workaholic.. and he puts it down in every phase of the Hip-hop game.. Writing < Producing, MCing..he does it all.. and his Beats are ill too..not too bad for a man and his keyboard and beat machine.. GO MOKa GO MOka GO!!..Yeah i lke this Joint and all you heads out there Please Smoke some of this..

    you'll be glad you did..

Tight tracks ..aka My Faves.. are "expedition and "Rolling Along" with Abstract RudE...

5 out of 5 stars Proof that Canadians can rock the mic too.........2001-09-03

This alblum is off tha heezy. The beats are all smooth and flowing, the guest appearances on it are off da hook, and lyrically..it's, well not as profound as 7L & Esoteric or Jedi Mind Tricks, ... After I looked into Moka's catalog I was floored..not only is it enormous..all the beats are produced by him as well. He truely is the west coast's most profound. This alblum is not to be slept on by anyone calling themselves a head.

    5 out of 5 stars allstar line-up!.......2001-04-04

This album is dope. How could it not be though with Sunspot Jonz of the Living Legends appearing along with Swollen Members, Ab Rude, and LMNO. If you like good hip hop with a jazz influenced beat this album is a must have. I don't have anything bad to say about it. The whole album is sick.

5 out of 5 stars such amazing pop.......2001-02-26

the black watch create such amazing pop--in the vein of My Bloody Valentine (but more acoustic-oriented and with strings), XTC (but more smooth, less quirky), and Moose (but much less twangy--more lush and at the same time more rockin'). "Caroline" and "All the Stars are Jewel-Bright" are great upbeat happy pop with dozens of dirty guitars and hum-along choruses; "Bring Me the Shears!" is like an excellent outtake from MBV's "Isn't Anything" era, there's a ripping version of Gordon Lightfoot's "If you could read my mind". this records just goes on and on--it's spacey and beatuiful and quiet like Yo La Tengo too. Very obscure band (but getting better and better known all the time), very awesome pop.

5 out of 5 stars Another brilliant record.......2001-01-16

Lime Green Girl is a return to the full band sound of earlier Black Watch records like "Amphetamines" and "Seven Rollercoasters", with J'Anna Jacoby back in fold as a true member of the band (1999's King of Good Intentions, even though it featured J'Anna on a few tracks, almost seemed like a John Andrew Frederick solo album).

Lime Green Girl gets off to a great start, with the mid-tempo "Caroline" and its grimy (but not dirty) guitars and understated melody, which reminds me somewhat of "This Way Out" - era Idaho. The next song "Bring Me The Shears", my current favorite track, has heartstopping chorus that digs into my brain every time I hear it. The rest of the album prety much follows the lead of these two songs - alternating between woozy post-shoegaze ("I Remember Swimming") to frenetic indie-pop (for lack of a better term) workouts like "Purple Milk and Yr. Pink Sky" and "Cellophane". All in all, Lime Green Girl is another near-perfect gem of an album from one of the most overlooked bands on Earth.

Oh, and as a bonus, Lime Green Girl also contains seven classic Black Watch songs from all four of the group's previous albums, which is a perfect initiation for those who are hearing Black Watch for the first time. In all, to quote Jack Rabid (in so many words) of Big Takeover fame, this album is imperative listening for those who think literate and heartfelt, yet gutsy, pop music is a thing of the past; This record will change your mind.
