I discovered Sibelius with this CD.......2001-03-18

I'm a big fan of Mattila and of art song. But Sibelius was mostly unfamiliar to me (except for some of his symphonies) until this disc. I especially liked the final cut, Jubal. The accompaniment here is minimalist with Mahlerian touches. Mattila sings exquisitely throughout. If you like songs by Brahms, Mahler, or Strauss, expand your knowledge horizon with this CD.

Beautiful Voice - Beautiful Music.......2000-11-17

I especially liked the songs "Var det en dröm?" and "Norden", but all of these songs are beautifully sung throughout. Karita Mattila has the perfect voice for these songs. Her voice is soft, yet strong, and the cool color is used well especially in "Norden". It is also clear that she understands every word she is singing.

This record is also a great introduction to Sibelius songs, for those who are not already familiar with them. There are also wonderful recordings of Sibelius songs by Jorma Hynninen, Tom Krause and Anne-Sofie von Otter, that I highly recommend.

The towering tree at Rockefeller Center, midnight mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Bing Crosby singing White Christmas—these are among the core snapshots of an American Christmas. A holiday that fuses the sacred and secular, high-gloss entertainment and deep spiritual meaning, Christmas in the United States is built on longstanding rituals at the same time as new riffs are continually being invented. It has its own distinct identity, and in one of the most culturally diverse societies on the globe, a Christian holiday has risen as the country's most prominent.

The striking array of works conducted by Judith Clurman on this recording open a window onto the many facets of a contemporary Christmas. Most of these compositions were first performed at one of the annual Christmas-tree-lighting ceremonies at Lincoln Center, where Clurman has directed music-making since 1992, and many were commissioned for those events.

Judith Clurman knows how to work with singers, and the sound of her chorus is sumptuous on this CD. Just what you might want to have playing as the family is gathering for the holidays. And in a time of questioning and re-examination of what makes us Americans, the fact that this CD represents a wide variety of American composers doing their best to connect to beloved traditions makes this CD a winner. Hats off to New World for making a CD the record companies never would have...

I just picked up the debut Alliebaba album and it's bumpin' with tight production from Raphael Saadiq (of Toni Tone Tony) and others. The album features appearances by the above artist/Daz Dillinger/Askari X/Silk-E and more. Allie has tight flows and good lyrics and I reccomend it to anyone who likes west coast or bay area rap

Laura Diamond's music is a montage of many styles all of which work amazingly well. Her songs range from amusing and lighthearted, as in "Can I be You", and "Stupid", to touching and heart wrenching as in "Some Days I Don't, and Goodbye Sweet Prince", to sensual and amazingly revealing as in my personal favorite "Ocean, with it's free yet jazzy feel, and wonderfully symbolic verse. Her lyrics are brutally honest,savvy, and catchy, and her melodies range anywhere from lush and achingly beautiful, to jazzy, and rhythmic. She shows great depth, and range of style, both in her songwriting, and in her vocal performance. It is obvious to the listener that Diamond is well versed and schooled in her muscianship. She is not afraid to lay her heart out on the line and reveal the deepest parts of herself in her songwriting, yet she also possess wit and the ability to laugh at herself as well. Who has not experienced the embarrassment of a blind date, (Stupid), or the pain of a breakup, when you realize that Mr. wonderful is not so wonderful, (Goodbye Sweet Prince.) Diamond has something that everyone can relate to. You'll laugh, and you'll cry, and sometimes you will simply be swept away by the beauty and lushness of her melodies, as in "Halfway to Never", which never fails to take my breath away when I hear it. Diamond's music is rich in melodic texture, and creativity, and deserves it's place with the great female songwriters of our day. The listener will not be dissapointed with this wonderful debute CD. I highly recommend it!

A Good Album that Should Be on Music Industry Radar.......1999-09-22

The album opens with it's most accessible tune, "Adonis",which chronicles the narrator's banishment from a childhood friendship thathas been redefined by the class system.

"They all prance, they all preen/ It's Olympus here on Baker Street/ Blue Jeans framing belly rings."

A lot of attention is paid to craft here. She has more in common in that regard with Ben Folds Five than MacLaughlin. You can tell that Diamond has real piano-playing chops. And she certainly knows how to play, but she shows immense restraint. I kind of wish that she'd occasionally cut loose, like Folds does, with long, complicated piano solos and dark instrumental refrains. To me, adding some unexpected twists and turns in the songs, would maybe help the music "stand out" more from the previously described Lilith demographic. But that's my one minor complaint in an otherwise flawless album.

Other highlights of the album include the soulful, 70's 45-sounding "The Slumber of Winter", which has one of the catchiest choruses ever and a gorgeous melody throughout. "Halfway to Never", my personal favorite on the album, is a contemplative, wistful relationship recap that induces shivers.

"Adonis and Other Romantic Delusions" is a savvy album, combining raw honesty with competent songwriting craft. She should be very proud of her achievement, regardless of whether or not the music industry pulls it's head out. I can't wait to hear more of her music.
