Product Description
Fat boy beats and fat boy rhymes..... stated and presented by three cats from LA who have been waiting to drop a record together for years. Finally in the year 2000 Murs, Himself, and Anacron have come together as The Netherworlds and recorded their first LP, “Pals.” All three artists have established themselves individually in the underground hip-hop scene. Now they have joined forces again after growing up together in L.A. and created an original, fresh sound that will impress fans from all spectrums of hip-hop.

The entire album knocks in the tradition of bangin’ west coast funk. Fourteen cuts deep with one solo from each of the trio, “Pals” is a record that underground heads will be checking for lyrics and style and true school west siders will be bumping in their rides for years to come. Production was handled mostly by Anacron, with Justin Tune and White Lightning each provided one beat. The full length album will be available on Galapagos4 on CD with a 7-track EP being released on vinyl.

The Sons Of The Pioneers brightened the lives of radio listeners during the depression years, their name and ethos conjuring up the spirit of the old American West and they endured as a much-loved group for many years to come. A Big Disappointment.......2006-08-10

Perhaps I was expecting too much, but I thought this set was a big letdown. In addition to the points brought up by some of the other reviewers (missing tracks, songs out of sequence, etc.), I thought the sound quality was anything but excellent. I could see some of the recordings from the 30s sounding weak, but there is no excuse for those from the 40s and 50s sounding as poor as they do. I have a ton of 40s recordings and very few sound as bad as these do. Hell, I have 78s that sound better. It's a shame as I really like the Sons of the Pioneers, but for good quality cowboy recordings going to have to stick with Riders in the Sky until some one comes up with a better set than this.

Good box set.......2006-02-24

Just great tunes. The only problem is that they are all not there. This set is missing some great songs from the Memories from the lucky U ranch album. Instead there are multiple renditions of the same songs but 90% of this set's content is free of repeats. Great value for good recording quality of some great music.

My Saddle Pals and I Box Set Review.......2005-10-06

I recently purchased this box set of great tunes from what I consider to be one of the premiere vocal groups of all time.

I am 54 years old and can still remember my dad playing some of these tunes on our old 78 rpm record player. The cd's are superior quality and the music sounds better today than ever.

I understand that some of the information in the attached booklet on the group may not be accurate and there is a couple mistakes on the rotation listing for some of the songs but to someone who truly enjoys most types of music this was a "must have" for my collection.

The lead and harmony vocals are clean and tight and the accompanying instruments are just right for this music.

I was not disappointed in any sense.

Bargain-priced bonanza.......2005-08-03

For anyone who loves western music, the Sons of the Pioneers are essential listening, and this collection of 4 CD's provides 100 beautifully reproduced studio recordings from the 1930s through the 1950s. There are earlier and later versions of "Cool Water," "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," and "Chant of the Wanderer," plus such gems as "Hills of Old Wyoming," "Timber Trail," "Out California Way," "The Last Roundup," "River of No Return," and "Montana." My only complaints are that the enclosed 50-page booklet is riddled with errors and omissions and that the selections include some dross and omit such classics as "Wagon Wheels," "Love Song of the Waterfall," and "Along the Navajo Trail."

Pioneer box leaves me saddle sore!.......2005-07-27

Let's start off with the technical problems. First, Disc one, track five is not "The Rovin' Cowboy", but actually "Chant of the Wanderer." This really stands out when hearing a 1947 recording tossed in the middle of a bunch of 1935 recordings. Also, "Chant of the Wanderer" is the closing track on disc two, which means you get "Chant of the Wanderer" twice and NO "The Rovin' Cowboy". Ouch!
Secondly, disc four is all screwed up with it's track sequencing. The songs are printed one way, but the disc plays it another. Pretty sloppy stuff from Proper records.

Maybe it's just me, but I also felt the song selection wasn't quite up to the Proper standards. Before I heard this box set I thought I WAS a fan, but now I question that. How much of a fan can I really be, when I'm skipping 25% of the songs. Maybe I'm just a person that needs a "best of" collection. I hope Proper has the Andrews Sisters in their pipeline. But, I also hope they do a better job of quality control!

Finally, why can't these compilations of old 78's have a few more seconds between them? Essentially we have a bunch of singles all crammed together, so why not let them have some breathing room. You could never change the records that quickly. As I recall, the British Beatles albums from 1963 to 1966 had a seven second break between songs. I loved it! It was like letting dust settle before being inundated with another song right away. It basically gives each song it's own spotlight. Oh, the days of one song at a time.

This CD is really good for those aspiring cowgirls and cowboys in your family. It is filled with familiar songs, easy to listen to by the kids and their parents! My son listened to this CD over and over and now his son is too. A timeless collection of fun!

Pleasing Harmonies and funny lyrics!.......2001-06-19

So many albums for children are full of schmaltzy overly preachy sermons. This one is just plain fun. I checked it out from the library once, and it quickly became our favorite. Especially "Biscuit Blues" and "Cowboy Lullaby". Your kids will love it and you'll be singing along with them.

We drove cross country with our children, ages 7 and 5, this was the most requested CD. It is very funny and you will not be able to keep from singing along!

A beautiful, soulful collaboration.......2004-10-27

"Simpatico" is the one word that I think best describes Willie Nelson and Kimmie Rhodes, two Texas crooners whose voices and musical inclinations meld with startling beauty. Either singer can crest to the top or fall back into humble harmonies in this set of ten fine duets. The songs are mostly Kimmie Rhodes originals, though Willie contributes two ("Valentine" and "It Will Always Be") with the remainder of the set coming from sources as disparate as Tom Waits (the wrote title track), Rodney Crowell and Rhodes' partner, Joe Gracey. For folks who like understated, well-crafted American music with deep, deep roots and perfect emotional pitch, this record is the real deal. Highly recommended!

I had never heard of this guy but at the price it seemed worth the risk. As with all of these box sets from JSP there are some real gems and a fair amount of stuff that was left in the vault for a reason.

If you're interested in how r & b developed into urban blues (with sidelines into rock and roll) then this is certainly a relevant set. But if you're looking for uniformly great blues records in one box then you will be disappointed.

The thing about getting down with the clown--Bozo the Clown, that is--is that you can't really blame anyone for not wanting to. Never mind the scary associations; at issue here is the music, and Bozo, beloved as he is, has never been known to get folks grooving. This record effectively changes that. In 14 genre-spanning songs, Mike Himelstein, who wrote, produced, and performed with vocal help from Tony Danza, Rosie Flores, and other fans, brings out Bozo's best via a ballad "Ballad of Bozo"), a parade ("Bozo's Big Parade"), a blues number ("Blues for Bozo"), and more. This is a fun, toe-tapping selection of songs the whole family enjoys. It is great for at home or in the car. I love the different styles of music for the songs. Highly recommend this music for young kids!!

WHOLESOME FUN STILL EXISTS.......2003-11-22

Always on the lookout for new music to share with my children I came across "Bozo and Pals get down with the clown". It was a blast from the past. I loved Bozo as a child and was thrilled to introduce him to my own kids. The album is fantastic. Every song is completely different and each of my children have their own favorites. There should be more fun, goofy, poignant and "easy on the ears" music like this CD. I highly recommend it to all parents who are tired of the same old monotonous re packaged songs. The bonus video that plays on the computer is a fun extra treat.

I bought this CD for my 3 and 5 year old nieces. In no time at all they were dancing around the room to the tunes. This is a very light, fun, and "easy" CD. I bought another one for a friend's child for a holiday stocking stuffer! I highly recommend this CD. No need for any parent to be worried about the lyrics with this! Excellent.

A great CD!.......2003-04-07

My one-year-old little girl loves this CD. I love the fact that some of the songs are sung by the Disney characters. This CD has been a lifesaver on road trips. As soon as I play it, my little girl stops fussing! Overall, this is a great CD.

Merely okay.......2003-02-09

I must admit that I was a little disappointed in this CD. It does have a number of kids' favorites, mostly sung by familiar Disney characters such as Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Daisy and Ludwig Von Drake. My 2 year old does enjoy some of the songs, but the music is a little frenetic and unengaging at times. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad album. It's just not our favorite.

A classic Previn jazz album.......2004-08-06

First off, this is not a substitute for the wonderful original West Side Story Broadway cast album. Instead, it is a jazz interpretation of the show's main songs, in Andre Previn's typical witty, understated style. Previn is inventive in his subtle way but does not violently alter the ideas of his friend and colleague Leonard Bernstein. This kind of jazz is far removed from the radically original work of Miles Davis and John Coltrane from the same period, but it is much further removed from the "jazz suites" of Claude Bolling mentioned by the reviewer below. Bolling wrote light, jazz-inspired pieces that are enjoyable but not especially imaginative. Previn's far more sophisticated album is a jazz classic.

It almost swings..........2001-12-21

Andre Previn is a tremendously talented pianist and conductor, and he's working with Bernstein's greatest work... so why doesn't this really ever come together for me? It's clever, the band is tight, but it just never rises above the level of very competant playing.

The problem, I think, is that this isn't jazz so much as it is a carefully arranged suite in the jazz style. There's no risk, no emotion, no excitement. Just very precise playing. In that, it reminds me of the Claude Bolling suites that were so popular in the 1980s. No dissonance, no dynamics, nothing to upset the tea party.

If you like West Side Story, get the original Broadway Cast Recording (Larry Kert's "Something's Coming" will send chills down your spine) or Bernstein's recording of the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. This album unfortunately never rises much above the level of polite background music.

She has a lot of good CDs and songs recorded such as Texas Bluebonnets, The Bear Song,Going Up On The Mountain w/Kathy Kallick, Lost John w/KK, The Touch of The Master's Hand w/KK, Little Annie & Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar w/KK.Who Will Watch The Home Place, Diamond Joe and many more. Laurie is also an excellent fiddler. From the CD at hand I have several favorites such as When I Get Home, great moving gospel, Tall Pines,Hard Luck And Trouble and Beyond The River Bend. I play Laurie Lewis regularly on my bluegrass show in Louisville, KY each Sunday night. My show is traditional and I often get requests for Laurie. This is an especially good CD from Laurie Lewis and is in the running for an award from IBMA 2000. As a bluegrass fan you would do well to add this to your collection. Keep them coming Laurie!

This in absolute brillant bluegrass CD! I have listened to it hundreds of times. I never get tired of it. The harmony is superb and Laurie's clear and true country voice is a wonder to behold. I'm so glad I found this CD and Laurie Lewis, plan to add more of her to my bluegrass collection.

This is simply one of the best recordings Laurie Lewis has done in her entire career. I should know, I've been following her career for 20 years and have just about every album and CD she's on. The purity of the music, and talent shown in the playing and the singing are just remarkable. A great CD for sitting and _listening_ to, not to use as background, as the songs have meaning and heart. Yeah, I'm a big fan of Laurie's, but anyone who cares about bluegrass, country, folk or just down-home good music will enjoy this recording.

Best for Christmas Cheer !!.......2007-01-12

This is one of the cleanest orchestral recordings of the 90s and shows the Boston Pops to great advantage. The production values are amazingly good to my ears, as is the wonderful interpretation of Maestro Lockhart. Amazon should list his name (not Mark Oswald's) to increase sales. This one will put you in the spirit of the holidays, for certain!

A Must For Boston Pops Lovers.......2003-12-04

Poor Keith Lockhart did not have the easiest time when he first came to Boston. He made a few major mistakes. First, he shortened the 1812 Overture at the July 4th Concert at the Esplanade, which may have been a decision of the television stations carrying the broadcast, but it, went over with a thud. His first few Christmas concerts were not critically acclaimed, though crowds still attended. By the time his album HOLIDAY POPS was released, things got a bit better for poor Keith, and now he is as much of a Boston institution as anyone.

The collections greatest strength is the lush sound of the orchestra and Lockhart's excellent handling of the ensemble. No matter what he selected as music for this album, it probably would have worked rather well. The track has a "Gloria" that was commissioned by the Boston Symphony. There are also familiar arrangements in the style associated with the Boston Pops of Christmas waltzes, a track called "Frosty All the Way," "Good Swing Wenceslas," and perhaps the best track on the disc "Tomorrow Is My Dancing Day." The chorus adds to numbers such as "The shepherd's Chorus," "Sleigh Ride," and John William's "Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas" from HOME ALONE 2.

Lockhart's style differs greatly from the legendary Arthur Fiedler and his successor John Williams, but for those who love the Boston Pops, especially at Christmastime, will not have a complete collection without this disc.

In an age of Christmas artists like Mannheim Steamroller and Trans-Siberian Orchestra (Who came up with these names anyway?), it's a blessing that we still have artists who have become as timeless as the Christmas music that they play. For many years, the Boston Pops Orchestra has had an annual tradition of performing Holiday Pops concerts in December, with the audiences enjoying champagne and refreshments on the floor. And Keith Lockhart has certainly done an excellent job of carrying on the tradition long maintained by Arthur Fiedler and John Williams.

This CD is an excellent compilation of the Boston Pops at its finest. From the opening "Gloria" to "Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas," each selection has its own unique touch applied to it. My favorites are "Gloria," "Christmas Waltzes," "Carol of the Bells," "The Shepherds' Chorus," "Christmas Time Is Here," and the swinging compilation "Frosty All The Way!"

He also presents a different version of the tune "Sleigh Ride," long a Pops Holiday staple, but I still think it sounds better without the lyrics. Fortunately, I have other recordings by Fiedler and Williams of this work. But other than this, it's a great CD overall. Thank you, Keith Lockhart, for keeping the tradition of great holiday music going. Your orchestra certainly has the timelessness that Mannheim Steamroller will never have.
