5 out of 5 stars Quiet Brilliance.......2006-06-04

Many of my favorite artists are in the midst of re-releasing remastered discs -- Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cure, Depeche Mode, Peter Gabriel, etc. The results certainly improve the record, but so far it has not awakened anything new for me in the work.

This has changed with the release of the Innocence Mission's "Birds of my Neighborhood". The original release was the first without the band's drummer, and took on a far more acoustic and intimate sound than their earlier recordings. However, the remastering done here brings it to a new level. The guitars and vocal are clean and crisp, sounding as if the trio is playing in your living room. You can hear clearly the sounds of a home-made recording, which draws the listener in even further than the initial release.

This album is a joy to listen to, and it gives me hope that earlier Innocence Mission albums will see the same treatment and return to market. Do not let this release go by!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful stand out album........2006-04-13

One of the innocence mission's strongest albums. There are so many great songs on this CD. And it does sound wonderful in this re-issued, remastered version. A must have for fans of the melancholy- in that it also delivers hope.

    1 out of 5 stars Stinka-Dinka-Do.......2007-02-26

This has to be one of the worst solo efforts of all time. Considering the talent Mr. Lamm had at one time in his life this effort is startling. If you threw this cd in the trash the trash would toss it back out. Don't buy it.

3 out of 5 stars SHould have been better.......2000-06-29

Outside of "In This Country", "My Neighborhood" version A & B and "When Will The World Be Like Lovers". The rest of the album is a waste of time. His first and third (latest) albums are far superior. Give up the social commentary Robert!

2 out of 5 stars The Skinny Boy should fatten up........1999-06-16

This album was quite a disappointment. Lamm had begun to take a more active role in songwriting in Chicago in the late 1980's after Cetera's departure forced a redistribution of the songwriting burden within the group. Growth was shown on Chicago 18, 19 and 21. However, Lamm only contributed one or two songs on each of these albums. Releasing a full album evidently presented a great challenge. Apart from the more energetic songs on this album such as "When Will The World Be Like Lovers", "In This Country" ,"Ordinary Thing" as well as the forboding "Murder On Me", Lamm sounds as if he has lost interest in songwriting. The album shows that Lamm's production skills have somehow become more limited as time has passed. Lamm is overly reliant on rudimentary sysnthesizers that give the album an atmosphere that it was produced prior to Gary Neuman's "Cars". The sound on some tracks is muddled. The production on his far superior first solo album "Skinny Boy" was much more clearer in 1974. Try that one instead. I do hope that he tries another solo project based on his over all tremendous track record.

    3 out of 5 stars Lamm's lyrical style.......1999-03-24

This cd features Robert's ability to write songs about daily life situations. From the title track, to All The Years, Murder On Me, When Will The World Be Like Lovers, the music and lyrics blend very well together.

3 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise not on the Top 40.......1999-03-16

Robert Lamm's most recent solo work is not bad. It doesn't match up to his best writing during the early 70's with Chicago, but not much else does. The best tracks here are "All The Years", which was written for an unreleased Chicago album, "My Neighborhood, Version A", written for his birthplace of Brooklyn, and "In This Country", another song rooted in today's social commentary of the times. "Life" would be a good addition to your CD collection.

2 out of 5 stars Remembering Past Enchantments And Past Ills.......2004-06-07

Few composers outside of the classical canon have expressed the ineffable as beautifully as Ennio Morricone. The Italian Morricone, who has written scores of wildly varying quality for over 400 films, came to international prominence with and is still best - known in America for his "Spaghetti Western" scores of several classic Sergio Leone films of the Sixties, such as A Fistful of Dollars (1964), The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966), and Once Upon A Time In The West (1969).

With the Leone scores, Morricone created musical pieces structured like complex mathematical equations, many of which were suffused with a driving, hypnotic, and archetypal power. In fact, the soundtrack for The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly was so dramatically dynamic that it thoroughly outstripped the finished film in terms of imaginative potential. Only with Once Upon A Time In The West did Leone create a film well crafted and realized enough to match Morricone's entrancing, playful, and occasionally perditious score. Similarly, Dario Argento's The Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1969) almost completely failed to utilize Morricone's contribution, the best portions of which were heard only dimly and sporadically in the finished film. Leone's late masterpiece, Once Upon A Time In America (1984), two - thirds a perfect film, also failed to fully rise to the occasion of Morricone's simultaneously poignant, wistful, and wonderfully exuberant score.

Today, Morricone's work is available on literally hundreds of soundtracks and soundtrack compilations dedicated to the composer, very few of which are entirely satisfying. An Ennio Morricone Anthology (1995), which contains 45 tracks from 39 films produced in Italy from 1965 onward, perpetuates this frustrating tradition.

Of the 45 tracks, about a third represent Morricone realizing or approaching the height of his talent, another third are fairly interesting but ultimately repetitious and self-cannibalizing, and the final third, which may have worked reasonably well within the context of the films they were written for, never rise above the status of shrill, discordant, and bellowing kitsch (several attempt a Henry Mancini - like levity and fall flat). In fact, there is a great deal of healthy, raw, and leveling vulgarity even in some of Morricone's most famous compositions, such as "Le Vent, Le Cri" from 1981's The Professional and "Chi Mai" from 1971's Maddalena, both of which are included.

Those seeking haunting compositions on the scale of "L'Estasi Dell 'Oro" or "Il Triello" from The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly or "Poverty" from Once Upon A Time In America will be disappointed to find very few pieces approaching their caliber here, especially if already familiar with such well - known pieces such as "Moscow Farewell" from the 1987 film of the same name or the otherworldly "Il Gatto A Nove Code" from The Cat O' Nine Tails (1971).

As compositions of vastly different quality are interspersed amongst one another in dizzying array, many may find An Ennio Morricone Anthology virtually impossible to listen to from beginning to end without skipping tracks repeatedly. As a genius whose greatest compositions address both the immanent and the transcendent, both perdition and salvation, both the archaic and the modern, Morricone and his admirers deserve a more carefully selected and thoughtfully produced anthology than this haphazard collection offers.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful scores from Ennio Morricone.......1998-12-19

Few composers in film music today are as greatly admired as Ennio Morricone whose scores for a wide range of screen fares and many Oscar nominations and wins have attracted the attention of fans all over the world. This compilation is one of the best and contains very fine original musics and rare tracks of this Italian composer.

4 out of 5 stars THE HOOD IS HIS, GET BACK!!.......2005-06-21

First of all, I gotta say that "N My Neighborhood" is MC Eiht's best album since "Death Threatz" (released in 1996). This is Eiht's second (and unfortunately last) album on Mack 10's label Hoo Bangin' Records, and it's a huge imrpovement from "Section 8". Don't get me wrong, Section 8 was a good album, but it had a few weak tracks. That's not the case on "N My Neighborhood" - the production is much much better (and harder) and Mc Eiht comes out much better on this one, sounding much more hardcore and kind of hungry. To me , it seems like he put in much more work on this one. The best track is the one most of y'all have heard already "The Hood Is Mine", a song that gots to be in Eiht's top 15 songs. The song also features Long Beach rapper Techniec and also Mack 10 (who only does the hook). The other songs are also great - you get some classic gangsta CPT rap and also a couple of more laid-back, mellower tracks. I only have good things to say about this album. The only guests featured are Techniec, Mack 10 and Binky Mack, and he could've used someone better (like longtime buddy Spice 1), but the truth is, Mc Eiht doesn't need anyone to help him out - he's a legent, one of the truest pioneers of this gangsta rap, and he keeps it real, never ever selling out. This is his best album since the classic "Death Threatz" and the ones before it. Too bad he had to leave Hoo Bangin', because that label had potential, but the label fell appart, things weren't run well... The bottom line is, that if you like MC Eiht's style, you gotta support him, and I'm sure you'll love this album. This is quite close to his mid-90's releases. It's not a 5 stars album, but it's a 4 1/2 start album for sure!

    4 out of 5 stars 4.5 star - 5th solo effort from Eiht.......2004-11-03

Eiht's second album on Hoo Bangin is another good one. The only problem with it is there's only 11 songs, but it's a good cd all Eiht fans need to get a copy. It has 1 classic, 2 ok songs and the other 9 are all good. Production is good and is handled by Young Tre (5 songs), Eiht & Caviar (2 songs each), and DJ Slip, and Binky MAck each do 1 song. Guests are a little more then he usually ahs on his albums. If only he got the airplay he deserves at least on the east coast (couldn't say for the west -much like Spice 1 or DJ Quik and many other Cali rappers) he'd have at least 10 million solo records sold and a bunch of platinum plaques.

yo wassup well all i can say is this is a phat cd w/ nice ghetto rhymes & tight beats...i think the best track is Hold Up and The Hood Is Mine, however I do like the days of We Come Strapped a little bit better but for real this is a tight cd, hype-ass beats for real...a must for any true MC Eiht fan

5 out of 5 stars Deserves Eiht Stars.......2000-06-28

MC Eiht comes correct again. Since joining the Hoobangin' affiliates, he has produced nothing but quality material, and demonstrated his maturity and longevity. This time around, on "N'My Neighborhood", he's not screaming "Compton" every other song, which means no matter what hood you're from, you can play it loud and enjoy it. This album has it all, bumpin' tracks, sweet lyrics, topics we can all relate to, and guest appearences that leave you begging for more colabortions.

All of the tracks stand out. In Git Money, and Tha Hood Is Mine, Techniec almost steals the show, by proving he's every bit as talented as any rapper out there. On From Your Hood To My Hood, Eiht proves it's not where you're from it's where you're at! Till I Die feat. Mack 10, All Around The Hood, with a hidden guest appearence by Binky Mack, and Hold Up, where he delivers a message, don't besurprized, are all great as well. So Ruff, a futuristic track, shows he can flow to music other than gangsta tracks.

Must Be Murder, and Lunatic, aren't the typical shoot 'em up kill 'em tracks, so don't let the names fool you. Hood Ratz is kind of a 70's relaxation tune, real ladies won't get offended, and he even says he's loving them, it's a really cool song. Last but not least Once Upon A Time N' The Ghetto, classic MC Ehit. Think back to Hood took Me Under, One Time Gaffeled 'Em Up, Streiht Up Menace, etc. classic Ehit tales from the hood matterial. Worth every penny, and Ehit times as good as anyone else.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry cd from a talented rapper...........2004-03-26

Lil Sicko's debut album was a very sorry one at that, he has a couple nice jams including the banger Who's That, but that's as good as this album gets, and is probably the only reason to buy this. His newer cd is alot better, it's actually a great rap cd among the best in Chicano/Latin rap. But this album fails to show us how skilled Sicko really is, the appearances are also very weak. Production is ok, but can be very simple at times, it just doesn't cut it, bad samples, good rapper, bad features with the exception of Wreck. To put it to you in one sentence, stay away from this cd.
