The naughtily titled Immaculate Collection culls 15 of Madonna's Top 10 singles from 1984 to mid-'90, plus 2 new ones that continued the run (the dirty, trunk-bumping funk of "Justify My Love"--a Lenny Kravitz production that justifies his entire career--and the danceable desperation of "Rescue Me"). Rooted in disco and classic AM pop from girl groups and ABBA to Strawberry Alarm Clock, Madonna made savvy, touching music throughout her first golden era. These tracks retain their sonic and historical significance while, like "She Loves You" or "Rocket Man," still brightening any space they're being played in. Far more than just a wise, irreverent image-maker--like the Beatles or Elton, come to think of it--Madonna during these years was the gift that kept on giving, forever fresh, sexy, hooky, and joyously sharp. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Madonna's Greatest hits.......2007-07-30
Madonna was one of the most definitive pop phenomenons of the 1980's and continues with her career, with no pause, today.
Her combination of Dance-pop, synthpop and electronica produced some really memorable stuff, and she certainly makes sure today, as in the 80's that she is noticed.
But there is some really good stuff she produced and this album is her definitve greatest hits collection.
My personal favourites here include the overtly sexual Like A Virgin, the cabaret-dance-pop hit, Material Girl, the feel-good Into The Groove, the youthfully defiant Papa Don't Preach, and the feminine Like A Prayer.
This album combines the best of Madonna's talent during her 80's career.
This is an important addition to the collection of a fan of 80's pop.
Major Madonna Mine.......2007-07-09
This album has all the big hits and best stuff from Madonna from 84 thru 90. Great compilation of the stuff from the first phase of Madonna's career. Gotta have this if you're a fan of the 80s.
Good, but not without flaws.......2007-05-27
While I'm reluctant to speak at all negatively about an otherwise fabulous compilation, I do have to concede to being a bit dismayed by the extent to which certain songs on it have been changed - the opening track of Holiday in particular (for which, sadly in my opinion, the Immaculate version seems to have pretty much become the default version - i.e. the one most likely to be heard when Holiday is played somewhere). If the original versions of this and Lucky Star were felt to be too long for such a collection, why couldn't their 7" Edits have been used instead?
Having said that, I certainly think its remix of Material Girl is an improvement and I like its slightly more tropical-sounding (to me) version of La Isla Bonita at least as much as the original as well; but in addition to my criticisms of Holiday and Lucky Star (and I'm not as keen on the Papa Don't Preach present on here either), I should perhaps mention that Like a Prayer has likewise undergone a little too much remixing for my liking, since it has given the song what I'd describe as a less haunting feel. Not that this means I consider it to be a poor remix though - on the contrary, I think it's rather good as far as radical remixes go. But I do still question whether it's appropriate for a hits album in view of how different it is from the version of Like a Prayer that was actually released as a single and which made this song so famous.
It would've been nice too if a few of Madonna's other pre-1991 hits (e.g. True Blue and Who's That Girl?) had been included, but I can understand why they weren't given the time constraint likely in place. Nevertheless, if at some point (maybe at the end of her official singing career) an even bigger collection of her hits is produced (a two- or three-part one no doubt), I do hope that the needless shortcomings of this one will not be replicated and that the 7" versions of Holiday and Lucky Star (or at least versions very similar to them) will be the ones it contains (though I do as I said prefer the Immaculate version of Material Girl and would be quite happy therefore for that one to appear again).
"You put this in me, so now what, so now what...?".......2007-03-16
The Immaculate Collection spans Madonna's '80s and early '90s tracks. Conceived as a greatest hits collection, this album also contained two new tracks, the ever-so-naughty, Justify My Love and the vocally powerful, Rescue Me. Some of my favorite songs include: Vogue, Cherish, Lucky Star, Material Girl, La Isla Bonita, and Live to Tell. Every song is a classic, no duds here. Madonna just keeps on getting better and better, one of the most important, influential, and provactive woman entertainers of our generation. I also recommend her best album to date, Ray of Light as well. Enjoy this non-stop party from our girl, Madge.
Absolutely Awesome and a must have album for Madonna fans and casual fans.......2007-03-08
This is a five star album and the only Madonna album or collection of hits you need. The album is all that and a bag of chips. In fact the 17 hits on this album show why Madonna is the queen of pop music and why she has been such a big star since the 80's. I do not think Madonna can top or produce better dance/pop music than she did in the 80's and early 90's, so she will always be remembered for these hits in my opinion. This album never gets old and stands its time. The music on this album is completely ageless and feel good music.

The fourth album by Canada's Immaculate Machine continues their quest to craft memorable pop hooks in smartly mysterious settings. They can rock ferociously ("Dear Confessor") as well as create ethereal dreamscapes ("Northeastern Wind"). Their trio interplay is tightly interlocked, but loose enough to retain a sense of warmth and spontaneity, and their songs are judiciously embellished with additional players contributing strings, keyboards, and additional background vocals. The set's ten tracks each offer up a surprise of some sort, as they appear to be part of a familiar genre, but are then given a twist. "Old Flame" sports an opening New Wave-like organ part but then gives way to the band's harmonized male-female singing, which calls to mind X hopping through an amusement park. It's energizing to hear a band that understands the dynamics and flow of a full-album experience--moods shift, tempos pick up or slow down--it's a perfect little aural journey. --David Greenberger
Album Description
"The songs sound like the best of retro Canadian new wave." -- Bay Area Reporter
"Together for a scant three years, Victoria indie trio Immaculate Machine sounds remarkably cohesive and fearlessly energetic on their Mint debut. With guitarist Brooke Gallupe and drummer Luke Kozlowski switching off vocal duties with able-voiced keyboardist Kathryn Calder, the he said/she said dynamic makes for a charming listen." -- Eye Weekly
"Together they create dense layers of sound, three-part harmonies, and hooks where Calder's voice rings like a bell aimed at the heart." -- Bitch
Recorded at JC/DC Studios by Dave Carswell and John Collins, with Colin Stewart handling additional recording and mixing at Gallupe Manor and Vogville Studios, Fables shows another dimension to the Immaculate Machine sound. Warm reverb envelops the songs, capturing the feel of classic '60s recordings--a time when the source of the sound and the feel of the room exceeded the desire for the unnecessary overdubbing of so many of today's recordings.
These dulcet sounds represent Immaculate Machine at its best: intimate, personal, and urgent compositions with a focus on the interplay between a tightly knit trio of close friends. The members are adept at reading the next move within a song, creating subtle dynamics that are so rewardingly apparent to the listener.
Features string arrangements by Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy, Arcade Fire) as well as special guest vocals by UK group The Cribs and Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos.

More fun than any tribute album has a right to be, Stoned Immaculate is clearly a labor of love that manages to embrace the spirit of the Doors without regressing into parading a line of Jim Morrison impersonators through the studio. Much credit goes to producer Ralph Sall, who--in addition to setting up collaborations between the surviving Doors and an array of artists from John Lee Hooker to Days of the New--also breaks out the beats and samples to create a few "new" Doors tracks. While Sall is no Fatboy Slim (despite the winking nod to "Bird of Prey" during the fadeout of "Under Waterfall"), his reconstructions add texture and variety, especially when the late William Burroughs steps up to the mic. But the true highlights here are the more organic collaborations: the three remaining Doors backing Bo Diddley and Ian Astbury; an unexpectedly great "Love Me Two Times" from Aerosmith; and Stone Temple Pilots helping Kreiger and Manzarek "Break on Through" even harder on a track that threatens to transcend the original. Hell, even the weaker contributions beat out Jose Feliciano. Come to think of it, if the Doors are still auditioning Morrison replacements (Kevin Coyne and Howard Werth no longer being available), STP's Weiland, Creed's Stapp, or the Cult's Astbury all acquit themselves well enough here to warrant an offer. -- Bill Forman
Customer Reviews:
one of the best rock tribute albums ever.......2007-03-03
I enjoy this more than any other artist tribute album I've ever heard, at least in the rock genre. Superb performances by all artists concerned, couple with excellent production values. Love the way clips of Morrison's poetry or between-song patter are mixed in here and there.
Morrison lives.......2007-02-17
STONED IMMACULATE brings the DOORS nicely into the 21st Century with creative covers performed by obvious DOORS fans of considerable talent. Highlights include Smash Mouth's searing "Peace Frog," Morrison/Hooker's "Rock House Blues" duet, the "Cosmic Movie" DOORS collage, Oleander's juiced-up "Hello I Love You," and Ian Astbury's desyrupized "Touch Me."
This collection is certain to please lovers of late 60's rock as well as all DOORS fans.

Pleasantly Surprising.......2006-10-27
Tribute albums suck and everyone knows it. Usually, although not in all cases, a tribute album is a CD compiled of musical has-beens who ineffectively cover an artists songs. The first thing that makes Stoned Immaculate better than that average tribute album is the fact that Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger, and John Densmore all perform on the album and have given their blessing to the project. The 2nd is that (at the time) none of these bands were has-beens and some of them are actually great bands. Not all the performances are great and some artists were mis-matched, but some artists who people would hold little faith in prevail (Creed anybody?). There's also an unreleased Doors track called Under Waterfall, which is a beautiful song. The best covers on here are Stone Temple Pilots 'Break on Through,' Creed 'Riders on the Storm,' and The Cult 'Wild Child.' That's not to say the other ones aren't good, but these are the best. Scott Weiland (vocalist of STP) has cited Jim Morrison as his inspiration. Him and his band don't let that go to waste here. On 'Riders on the Storm' Creed rocks out, creating an almost better song. The Cult, meanwhile, takes a song that was never amazing or anything and makes it way better. This album, while not perfect, does have a lot of great bands at the peak of their musical power paying tribute to their idols. It's wonderful to hear The Doors' legacy live on and it's cool to hear some great artists singing their songs.
1. Stone Temple Pilots "Break on Through"-5/5-This may be blasphemy. But this version could be better (or equally good) with the original. You can tell that Scott Weiland truly holds a lot of respect for Morrison. STP takes the song and pays homage to it, but also makes it their own.
2. Creed "Riders on the Storm"-5/5-I've never been a big Creed fan, but Scott Stapp does a pretty good Jim Morrison impression. Not only that though. This version rocks. They add an extra edge that wasn't there in the original version.
3. Train "Light My Fire"-4/5-This version's OK. The keyboard opening is mysteriously absent. It's not bad, but it definitely sounds like a song off a tribute album.
4. Smash Mouth "Peace Frog"-3/5-The band added some funkiness to it, but I'm not a big fan of what they did.
5. Days of the New "L.A. Woman"-5/5-This cover, although it feels rushed, isn't bad.
I've never even heard of Days of the New but this is cool.
6. Aerosmith "Love Me Two Times"-5/5-This was one I was really looking forward to hearing. Aerosmith does a great version of the song. It's heavier (not by much though) than the original and it's awesome.
7. The Doors "Under Waterfall"-5/5-I assume this is a Doors song that was left unreleased. Which is a shame, because it's actually a great song. It's lyrics are really cool (obviously) and it's actually catchy and kind of beautiful too.
8. The Cult "Wild Child"-5/5-This has never been one of my favorite Doors songs, but The Cult turn it into a better song than it ever was.
9. Jim Morrison "Roadhouse Rap"-5/5-Probably recorded as an intro to Roadhouse Blues. It's pretty cool and shows a kind of fun side of Morrison.
10. John Lee Hooker & Jim Morrison "Roadhouse Blues"-5/5-Brilliantly intercutting Morrison's vocals and John Lee Hooker's guitar and vocals; This song is great too.
11. William S. Burroughs "Is Everybody In?"-5/5-It's a poem read to the backbeat of a bunch of Doors songs. It's pretty interesting and a little bit haunting too.
12. Oleander "Hello, I Love You"-4/5-This song holds a special place in my heart and I was kind of disappointed with this version. It's not bad, but the guy's voice is kind of lame.
13. Ian Astbury "Touch Me"-5/5-I saw Ian perform this song live with Riders on the Storm; This has never been one of my favorite Doors song, but both his performance of it and the way he performs it makes it better.
14. Perry Farrell & Exene "Children of the Night"-3/5-I don't like Perry Farrell or Jane's Addiction and I guess I don't like Exene that much either. This is probably my least favorite track.
15. Bo Diddley "Love Her Madly"-3/5-This is less-than-spectacular. He makes the song his own, it bares almost no resemblance to the original. Problem is...That's the problem.
16. The Doors "The Cosmic Movie"-5/5-This is essentially a bunch of stray poems and excerpts from Doors song thrown into a juxtaposed mess with a "Five to One" backbeat. Hate to admit it, though. It's kind of interesting.
17. Days of the New "The End"-4/5-It grew on me for sure. It's extremely faithful to the original version, but they could've picked a much better band to do the cover.
GRADE: B
Worth it just for the Burroughs track.......2006-07-01
Awesome track. I'd happily buy the album just for the Burroughs track. It's music mixed together with William S. Burroughs' famous voice as he rambles on quoting Morrison ("Blood on the streets") and then breaks into a discussion of Morrison ("Died in a bathtub in Paris...seems like a g**amn strange thing to happen.")
At the end it blends together with Jim's voice. It's a really bizarre but fascinating track.
Loved It Only One Time.......2006-06-12
This is not a great album, but it does have its highs and lows. The album starts with a couple of well known acts covering popular Doors tracks. These two covers sold the album for me. What I didn't know were the gems hidden here. A couple of "new" Doors songs, Under Waterfall and The Cosmic Movie, the latter being a must listen for all Morrison lovers, as Jim speaks of death being the ultimate end, and to make sure you fill your life with excitement so you're not bored watching it when you die... truly poignant considered the circumstances that followed. Also noteworthy are Aerosmith's cover of Love Me Two Times (although a bit lackluster), and Bo Diddley fronting the Doors on Love Her Madly. Now for the negative... if you want to save yourself some grief, skip Roadhouse Blues with John Lee Hooker... it's Blasphemy! capital B! Hearing the classic "redone" with JLH talking over the instrumental breaks is torturous. Also Days of the New are unimpressive and must be proteges of the record label or something. Worth the money for the few highlights and its "eclectiveness".

Avoid their live performances.......2006-11-23
At best, this band is passable. The music is unmemorable, the vocals are weak, and the band itself is unengaging. I saw them open for the New Pornographers on tour, and despite their ear-catching name, should have figured they'd fit the formula. What formula is that, you ask? The one where you go to see an indie rock band of the level of New Pornographers - that is to say, a band that is unique, talented, and has a following but hasn't crossed over into much radio play, or money-lining-the-pockets album sales - and you pray to whatever you choose to pray to that there will only be one opening band. Because as the bands move down the line up, so the assault to your ears increases proportionately. Immaculate Machines was the first band in a three band line up. By definition, they had to be awful.
Though their music was completely forgettable, their own self congratulatory commentary on their own creativity has become a running joke around here. Example:
one band member: Alright! Now we're going to play another really cool song for you!
another band member: AWESOME!!!!
Sounded like a pep rally for the losing team, not indie rock. This is not recommended.
Mindblowing musicianship.......2006-01-18
When I saw this band, I said "werd... this is ill". They sound kinda like some other bands I've heard too. Kinda like a cross between Mystery Facelift and Killing Flowers. You have probably never heard of those other bands, but that is okay, because slimshady69 is way more up on his "ish" than any of you. So take his word for it. They will make you feel horny. In a good way. You simply must get this album. Or don't. Like slimshady69 gives a #@&^. He just wants to slam the keyboard chick! Whatsup baby? How you doin? I hope she doesn't have a boyfriend in the band, because the next time she comes through Parkville, Wisconsin, I will have candles ready in the bathtub. Straight gentlemanly steez, maybe a bottle of wine. Some soul music. Thats right biatch.
Pretty good indie rock - the singer might not be for everyone, but it's very well done! - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-11
"Ones And Zeroes"'s biggest flaw are the singers - they just aren't very likable (especially the female vocalist). Fortunately, though, none of the songs are "bad", and the musicianship is usually pretty interesting - depending on whether you like the singers or not, every track is good. It's somewhat derivative sounding, but they somehow manage to make a slightly unique sound. I'm not sure if they've found their sound yet, though. The musicianship is definitely very good and the production is pretty well done. The lyrics, unfortunately, are very hard to make out, but when they're decipherable they're actually somewhat good (some of the time)! It comes close to a classic, but the singers arguably hurt the rating. Despite this, however, chances are that indie rock fans will still love it! Highly recommended!
Highlights include:
the entire album!
Great live too!.......2005-11-15
What a talented band this is. I saw them in concert opening for New Pornographers in Chicago and they were fabulous. I hope they get the attention they deserve.
watch out for these guys!.......2005-10-23
This is a great trio! I love these guys! Just listen to the drumming alone. The song writing is wonderful. The band looks good. I own all of their music and you will not be unhappy if you get one of their c.d.s These people are truly one of the up and coming new generation bands . It is inspirational music. I love them!

Soothing To The Soul.......2007-07-17
This is one of those CDs that you want to sit back and relax too. So moving and so soothing to the soul, body and mind.
This is what Choir and Organ magazine had to say.......2002-12-08
A perfect portal into the sound world of medieval Russia, this selection of liturgical material, drawn from a tradition harking back to the 11th century, includes unadorned monophonic chant as well as ceremonial pieces in polyphonic styles developed in the 16th and 17th centuries, the sonorities of the former occasionally creating enjoyably spooky, ringing overtones in the generous acoustic. The men of Deisus sing with an almost visceral depth of commitment and, as might be expected, the low basses are profoundly in a class of their own.
The best Russian choral CD of the season.......2002-02-09
This disk is a must for every lover of male Russian choirs! Don't get confused by the name of the choir (I assume it is based on Greek deisis `prayer') or the commercial design of the booklet: this is simply the very best of Russian choral chant that has been published this season. The fourteen singers of the choir perform ancient chants, that have partly been deciphered here for the first time, and so are absolutely unique. Because of the high quality of singing and the choice of repertoire, Deisus can be compared with leading choirs such as the famous Patriarchate Choir of Mr.Grindenko. The chants performed on this splendid disk, all in honour of the Virgin Mary, are either homophonic or polyphonic, in a pleasant alternation. They share the quality of monastic austerity that makes them absolutely captivating: the listener is transposed to another world, a world of quiet and piece. Warmly recommended!
Astonishing Recording!.......2002-02-05
Anyone who hasn't heard Russian chants performed by deep voices has a real delight ahead and a profound musical experience. This recording captivates from beginning to end. The voices of the Deisus Choir, singing heretofore unpublished chants, took this listener onto a soundscape he didn't know existed. The choir emerges like the breath of God and rolls on in a vibrant acoustic that's perfectly suited to the voices, which resonate as much in the solar plexus as in the ear. I've collected a good number of recordings of chants (including the best-selling disc of the Spanish monks that came out some years ago), but the present recording by the Deisus Choir is now at the top of my list.

Pretty good dub.......2001-12-17
This is good kick back music. Fun to listen to when you are writing reviews for cd's at Amazon.com. Everything here has a spacey psychedelic feel to it with some robotic sounds echoing throughout. I prefer a more rootsy dub by the likes of Black Uhuru or even the spacey sounds of Lee Scratch Perry though. All in all not the best, but easy to listen to.

Customer Reviews:
one of my favorites... rambling review.........2006-01-20
I Feel Your Pain and Cold On Me stand out the most. Both feature intricate instrumentation & production by Khayree, and powerful, well-written lyrics by Mac Mall & Khayree. Mac Mall provides a flawless vocal performance on both tracks, meshing seamlessly with the beautfiul, ever-changing arrangements.
The turntable work by D.J. Yon on Mac Jesus and Monster adds a nice touch. Particularly on Monster, playfully twisting that old House Party sample to great effect.
Save Me samples from that old song, Outlaw, from Me Against The World quite well, which, like Outlaw, features the Outlawz. That expressive male vocalist towards the end of the song really ties the track up nicely. Fans of Outlawz will likely enjoy track, it's pretty decent.
P.O.P, despite being lyrically the same crap that's been recycled by rappers for-frickin'-ever, has a nice sound going for it. The same can be said for Seventeen, which is only slightly more interesting lyrically.
Immaculate and Shakin' In The Alley are also great cuts.
The Femi Ojetunde-produced tracks are the weak spots of this album (though easily superior to contemporary pop-rap) some of sounds Femi Ojetunde comes up with are interesting and enjoyable. All of the Khayree-produced shine, making this album a must-have.
Shock G, and the song he appears on, annoy the hell out of me for some reason. That song is the one track on this album I can't stand.

Criminally Underrated Crossover Album.......2005-08-14
IMMACULATE DECEPTION was LUDICHRIST's debut album. It was released in 1986, a landmark year for underground metal and crossover music (the fusion of punk and metal). SLAYER, METALLICA, MEGADETH, AGNOSTIC FRONT, DARK ANGEL, SODOM, KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, OVERKILL et al, released some of the most influential albums ever, and LUDICHRIST was no exception, but their part in history books is limited at best. IMMACULATE DECEPTION featured a really well produced sound, clear enough but at the same time with enough savage fury to make even SLAYER take a run for their money. The lyrics are satyrical, cynical and anti-government, which was pretty much THE norm with all hardcore punk bands and even some thrash metal bands as well. The band was not afraid to strut their musical prowess on numbers such as "Legal Murder","young, white & well behaved", "Fire At The Firehouse" and the irreverent "Green Eggs And Ham" which features probably THE first ever Hardcore/Metal/Rap crossover and pulling it off in a very convincing and likeable way. This is light years before the so-called, "Nu Metal" or "Rap Metal" stylings that dominated the airwaves in the late 90's and early 2000. For all of you speed freaks out there, this album also contains some unbelievably fast numbers...in fact, most of this album is played at blazing speeds! (Think CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER with a sense of humor, good production and better musicians!)Albatross did a great drumming job here and Glenn Cummings guitar hero licks set LUDICHRIST far and apart from most of their hardcore metal peers. It's hard to pin point any good numbers because the entire album is REALLY good!
Finally, I'd like to comment on the actual pressing of this album. This is definitely a fly-by-night kind of "remastering" work. On several tracks you can actually hear "record scratch", which leads me to believe that this is a very well done Vinyl to digital transfer. In other words, this is NOT a transfer from the original tapes. COMBAT has done the same on other so-called "remastered re issues". If it's done so cheap, why is this album so DAMN expensive?!?! It's really a shame such a colossal album as this one is not given a fair digital treatment when so much "garbage" is floating out there. Sure, the sound is good enough, and it sure beats the tedious job of doing the transfer yourself (if you own the album and have the gear to do this stuff), but we'll have to wait for some better re issue, because this album deserves one!
Ludichri$t.......2001-03-27
Totally killer. I've owned this album since it's original debut, ('86?) and just listened to it again today. A talented mix of blues, jazz and rap all put together in a unbeatable hardcore package. Good stuff.
Totally avant garde!.......2000-06-13
This album it's one of the first (if not the first) in actually incorporate rap to real metal, playing a real avant garde rap, crossover, hardcore music. "Immaculate Deception" it's undoubtely a jewel to all those who wants to find the roots of the new styles (limp bizkit, biohazard, RATM).

Album Description
Up from the depths of disparity comes meat hammer. Along the lines of Bowie, The The, and Nick Cave, meat hammer shows the dark side of existence. From subtle songs of lost hope to angry, heartfelt love songs, meat hammer uncovers the wounds and pours a gallon alcohol on them. Stand out tracks include "Hold Your Weight", a striking song of lost hope, and "Restraining Order" which pulls you in the front seat of a car for a lonely drive down memory lane...this cd should come with anti-depressants...

Sitting Around Waiting to Die is one of the best albums in years. The tracks give you insight into one of today's most thought provoking song writer's (Bruns) mind. Whether you are just somberly driving to the road, ready to rock, or anything in between....this album is for you. My advise is, buy it while you can at this price, because I guarantee in a few weeks Meat Hammer will be on a major label and you can pay $16.99 for Sitting Aroung Waiting to Die. Buy it. Rock it. Love it.
