Best CD I bought in 1999.......2000-05-31

Every song on this CD is excellent. I bought this CD after hearing 'favorite' on local radio, and I didn't know what to expect. The CD rocks. I've seen the Gravel Pit three times now, and every live show is great as well. This is the best CD that I've bought in the last 16 months.

Boston Rocks!!!!!.......1999-07-27

Another great band comes out of Boston. I bought this CD on a whim after hearing the song "Favorite" on the radio. I never thought I would love it so much. Not a bad song on the disc. I'm going to see them at a club in Boston next week, I've heard they're even better live.

Not only is this a brilliant recording--its got some amazing tunes, great guitar riffs and its reminiscent of the 50's with a twist of modern rock guitar in it. i love the song "favorite". if you like this cd, i also recommend the the latest from fountains of wayne, "utopia parkway".

I bought Silver Gorilla based on a review i read in Ent. Weekly as well as because it was produced by the same guy who produced the most recent records by Jen Trynin and The Gigolo Aunts, Mike Denneen. He also mixed one of my other favorite records of 99 The Fountains of Wayne, Utopia Parkway. Anyway, Every song on this record by The Gravel Pit is so good, I've listened to it at least 10 times since I got it in the mail on Saturday!

Buy this CD!!!!.......1999-08-10

I bought this album after buying the Gravel Pit's most recent - Silver Gorilla. I was very surprised to find out that I like Manifesto every bit as much. I just ordered their third CD today. Favorite song is "Shivers". I just saw them live and they were amazing...go see them if you get the chance.

Hard-hitting alterno-pop package really delivers........1999-03-04

The Gravel Pit Manifesto is one of the few "alternative" albums that truly has staying power in my collection. Moreso than in any other of their albums, Manifesto rewards its listeners with the style of infective pop hooks and concise phrasing that made alternative such a stalwart on the music scene in the early 90's. Manifesto was responsible for putting The Gravel Pit on the national market and rightly attracted the attentions of listeners who liked the energy of albums like Quicksand's "Slip", but who also were looking for tight pop hooks, like those in Ween's "Chocolate and Cheese" or Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

Scooby Doo rap that works?... Zoiks!!.......2000-11-19

So we have stepped across the threshold of the new millenium and rap is bigger than ever. Commercial rap is riding high on a crest of multi-ethnic popularity and possible contractual duress is forcing artists to churn out 'less than inspired' pieces. This was never the case with the Wu Tang Clan.

Pioneers of a refreshing wave of 'live' hip hop in the early nineties, they injected a much-needed energy into hip hop when it was at risk of stagnating in a pool of lazy West Coast production and mundane lyricism. They now return in 2000 with a hark back to those halcyon days with a new album and two new singles.

Media snippets and rumours abounded as to the post-millenial direction they would take and it seems that the promise to recapture the late eighties/early nineties hip hop zeitgeist has been kept. After the slow, sombre beats and loops that dominated late nineties Wu production, we are now treated to an accelerated tempo suffused with an array of sounds which emanates an almost comic vibe (a little bit Slim Shady, actually). Lyrically, Gravel Pits is bereft of the metaphorical imagery we have come to expect from the Clan but, as such, maintains the ethos of the track. Ghostface in particular shines with his dextrous reciprocal verse - his style fitting the tune like elegant fingers in a velvet glove.

All in all, not the deepest or indeed best display of the Wu Tang brand of hip hop, but it certainly displays a diversity and overshadows the majority of hip-'pop' out there.

I'm not a long time fan of Wu-Tang Clan but when I heared Gravel Pit I just knew I had to buy it. The whole single is really good but Gravel Pit is the bomb! I'd definitely recommended to anyone who likes good music. The next thing on my shopping list is "W"!

I got this CD at a recent gig - despite being warned off by a band member that this was not like the other CDs...verdict! this CD rocks -- I especially enjoyed listening to how the band's sound evolved. Highlights are Jed Parish's scathing yet catchy "suburban rock" and Lucky's vocals on the last (but oldest) track...The Gravel Pit- long may they play
