Having produced tracks for the likes of Common, The Pharcyde, Busta Rhymes, and D'Angelo among others, producer Jay Dee has more than proven his ability to make beats that move the masses' asses. But what happens when the music plays without those celebrity voices? The answer: fewer distractions. Welcome to Detroit is a delectable set of concoctions from the Slum Village dweller's laboratory. From the percussion and live guitar on "African Rhythms," to the handclaps and succinctly programmed bass lines on "The Clapper," the Detroit native further explores the virtues of his beloved low end theory. Guest verses from Detroit undergrounders Phat Kat, Blu, and Beej add a little Midwestern flavor to the record's universal feel. And the spacy vocals and variety of keyboard and synthesizer sounds on songs like "Come Get It" and "Big Booty Express" take you out of this hip-hop world and into the next. Welcome to Detroit is hip-hop hospitality at its best. --Kenji Jasper

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I agree with everyone else, amazing work.......2007-02-24

Originality and your own style, the attributes all producers and rappers go for. This album is true Jay Dee style. I would even go so far as a new sub genre. The beats are so smooth and flow with a subtleness, but amazingly the tempo of each song is different, the beats retain they're character but vary from song to song, thats just pure brilliance. This focus on beats hasn't effected the rapping either, a lot deeper but less undertone meaning than the rhymes from Slum Village 1 & 2. Some great artists that never really hit the big time, but are worth their weight in gold such as Elzhi and Beej have done a good job also. Buy it if you would like to hear Slum's work with a touch more variety.

5 out of 5 stars J Dilla Classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-24

The entire album is off the hook!!!, If you have dont have Slum Village's Fantastic Vol. 2 or The Shining I suggest you do. RIP DILLA

5 out of 5 stars Just Like The Album Cover.......2006-12-29

If you're in the right state of mind like Dilla on the cover, then this c.d. is purely a slice of hip-hop heaven for you! An extremely underated musical album period!

4 out of 5 stars J Dilla - The best to ever do it!.......2006-03-19

I bounced this CD when it first came out and thought this is great. After years of listening to all the other crap, oh I mean rap on the radio. Its nice to know that I can dig in my CD collection and listen to great music. J-Dilla RIP...man you are the best! You have a ear for music that is totally oustanding! Its a shame that corporate music execs pump up wack artists and wack music, like everything you hear on the radio and negelect real talent. Most catz are simplistic in their rhymes and beats with no substance. Little Brother, Pete Rock, Hi-Tek, Slum Village I thank GOD for you. Keep putting out real music!

5 out of 5 stars Rest in Peace.......2006-02-15

J Dilla died today at the age of 32 from complications from Lupus. Prayers are with you and your family.

I didn't say better, but this thing is so damn intricate. I know "Featuring Phat Kat" sounds boring at face value. But meditate to that instrumental and discover all the wickedness this man displays on every friggin' beat he makes. It ain't right man. It just ain't right...Peace and Love.

The instrumentals display Jay Dee's phenomenal skills as a producer, musician, DJ, and overall music enthusiast. By far, Jay Dee is the hardest working Hip-Hop producer in the world today!

Most recently, Jay Dee is known for contributing two tracks on Common's heralded Be album. His credentials read like a who's who of Hip-Hop and R&B. Over the past 10 years, Dilla has worked with A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Guru, Madlib (as 1/2 of the super group Jaylib) and his former group Slum Village.

Welcome 2 Detroit Instrumentals is only a taste of what is more to come from Jay Dee in 2005. Look out for his yet to be titled follow up to Welcome to Detroit in the fall of 2005 on BBE Records.

5 out of 5 stars Good Gangsta Satanic Music.......2004-10-13

I picked this up, cause I'm down with ICP and well, most of the stuff in Detroit. This album has really nice beats and the lyrics are dark and moody. This is nothing you would play to your girlfriend, kid, or mom or dad, that's why I love it. Compared to other rap albums, the lyrics tell you exactly what's going on in their minds, and that's some dark sht. So if you feel like killing yourself, this is the album to do it to. So all in all I liked it.
