Trick Pony's third album finds them musically more varied and adventurous--covering Los Lonely Boys' "Senorita" and Bonnie Tyler's "It's a Heartache," and inviting Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish aboard the soulful "Sad City." But the band still suffers an identity crisis--whether to be a serious musical ensemble/honky-tonk presence under the lead of Keith Burns and Heidi Newfield, or to let the insufferable Ira Dean prank them into a crazy, fun-loving video band--that brands them as lightweights. And it doesn't help that they insist that R.I.D.E. stands for "Rebellious Individuals Delivering Entertainment," or that they sprinkle inane sound bites from George Jones between a couple of songs. That said, Newfield still belts a fine, honkin' attitude number ("Ain't Wastin' Good Whiskey on You"), and knows how to wring the emotion out of a heartbreak ballad ("When I Fall")--and Burns is both an affecting songwriter and occasional lead vocalist. Yet in the end, there's a desperation about this record, seen in the inclusion of 14 tracks when they should have gone lean, and in their inviting a plethora of big names (particularly Kris Kristofferson) to add legitimacy. How long these Ponies can continue to learn new tricks remains to be seen. --Alanna Nash

3 out of 5 stars R.I.D.E........2006-08-15

It is modern country. It is not my favourite music but "Trick Pony" has some very good songs. She is a MUST in a country music collection.

5 out of 5 stars R.I.D.E. ON!!.......2006-07-31

R.I.D.E. (Rebellious Individuals Delivering Entertainment) is what they refer themselves as, on this album. Track 1- Ain't Wastin' Good Whiskey" has many top notch artist helping Heidi, Keith, and Ira, with vocals(Tanya Tucker, being one of them.)
"IT'S A HEARTACHE" the remake of Bonnie Tyler's song. Although Bonnie's version is a bit more raspier in vocals, TRICK PONY does add a few raspy vocals here and there, with a few nitches of their own, which makes T.P.'s version good and unique!! "I DIDN'T" is what I call a "men bashing" song. Just a few differences of opinions between man and woman. "THE BRIDE" another great song from T.P. "SENORITA" a remake of the Los Lonely Boys tune. "HILLBILLY RICH" talks about a redneck livin' rich. (now if that isn't ironic.) And last but not ever the least the 14th track.. "MARYANN'S SONG" a very loving tribute to Heidi's deceased mother, narrated by the talanted Kris Kristofferson. This CD R.I.D.E. is new, fresh and R.I.D.E. on!! Keep up the great work T.P.

4 out of 5 stars A few inches shy...........2006-03-31

I quite enjoy this album for the most part, with the exception of one or two tracks that I usually just skip. As an avid Trick Pony fan I'm satisfied with this album and play it often but they may have missed a step or two in comparison with the first two albums.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2006-02-15

WOW! This has got to be one of the best country albums I've listened to in a long long time. TP's honky tonk style never lets up throughout every song. I enjoyed this album so much I purchased TP's other 2 and enjoy them just as much. I highly recommend TP to anyone looking for a unique and refreshing sound in country music. This album is excellent. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Its about time..........2005-09-24

Yes, this CD has finally come out...its about time! It seems we waited forever for this outstanding new disc from Heidi and the boys! I love this disc! I bought it 2 days ago and it hasn't left my CD player yet! The remake of Bonnie Tyler's "It's a Heartache" with Heidi's voice sent chills down my spine. "When I Fall" is a classic Trick Pony ballad. Heidi's bluntness is definitely shown on "I Didn't". The other remake of the Los Lonely Boys "Seniorita" was totally unexpected, but great! But, I think the best song and my personal favorite is "Stand In the Middle of Texas". Oh...my...gosh...totally unbelievable! It is classic country with a twist in my opinion. It is definitely the biggest highlight on this new disc. "Stand In the Middle of Texas" is a track that'll be played in every honky tonk from coast to coast after one in the morning after everybody's left the bar. It is the "tear in my beer" song on the album. I would almost venture to say this would be Trick Pony's "Where Would You Be" song on the album! If Trick Pony doesn't receive a CMA for something on this disc there's a problem.

1 out of 5 stars Beware! This is NOT the official soundtrack!.......2006-07-12

I played my official soundtrack CDs to death so I was looking for a replacement. This is not the real thing. A lot of the tracks aren't even on these, and the order on the rest of them is all mixed up. Bad quality sound, without the energy and passion of the original -- sounds like elevator music. There are even misspellings throughout the playlists. It is not readily obvious to the buyer that it isn't what you think it is, until it arrives.

The Fellowship volume won't play on one of my hard drives at all; it plays, but fuzzily, on my laptop. I gave up before trying it in the CD player in my vehicle.

2 out of 5 stars Not the original music.......2005-07-13

I was expecting this to be the music from the movies - it isn't. It is nicely done, but if you're expecting the same style and sound as from the movies, look elsewhere (this sounds more MIDI than orchestra).

Gary Floyd's voice just gets better and better.
I'm addicted to listening to this CD.
I used to read reviews of Sister Double Happiness, one of his previous bands, that used to say that they sounded like Lynyrd Skynyrd, which I never agreed with, but "Movin' On" sounds
like a new LS cut (only better). Great REAL rock in this modern age. The guitar work is nice and thick.
Check out anything by Imperial Teen as well (Lynn Perko of SDH)
    nice companion CD to this.
If you listen to the samples provided - the first cut Kali is the weakest and not typical of the rest of the CD.

Great rock and roll with soul and message still exists and better yet, it's twinged with punk and country. Why doesn't good music like this get played on the radio?

        Album Description

No one snake-hipped his way up the pop charts with more panache than New Orleans R&B legend Lee Dorsey on 'Ride Your Pony' and 'Get Out Of My Life, Woman.' Produced at the famed Cosimo Recording Studio by storied Crescent City knobsmen Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn, Dorsey's first Amy album is sweetened here by the addition of 11 rare bonus tracks culled from the absolute master tapes and remains the distilled essence of the New Orleans sound. 23 tracks on this Sundazed release!

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dorsey Rides the Rhythm.......2006-04-10

Lee Dorsey remains one of New Orleans' most inimitable stylists and underrated hitmakers. Unlike so many of the soul and r & b legends of his generation (he was born December 4, 1926), there is little shout in his style, and any gospel influences come filtered through Ray Charles. Dorsey was already 30 years old when he debuted on Johnny Vincent's Ace label with "Rock" in 1957. The next year, Allen Toussaint would play piano on "Lottie Mo" (first issued on Valiant) beginning a collaboration that would continue through most of Dorsey's career: rarely have singer and producer been so aptly matched. In 1961 "Ya Ya" (on Bobby Robinson's Fury label) became Dorsey's first national smash hit, and it was followed by several more sides and an album for the same label. In 1963 Smash released a superb single by Dorsey backed by the A.F.O. All-Stars, who also backed up the vocalist on a pair of singles on Chicago's Constellation label.
After two years in the military, Toussaint was back in New Orleans early in 1965. With Marshall Sehorn he created the Sansu label, affiliated with Amy/Bell Records, and the Sansu/Amy/Bell imprints would issue Dorsey and Toussaint's recordings through early 1970. "Ride Your Pony" was their first hit on the new label and the title track to the first of two superb Lee Dorsey albums released during this period. Sundazed has reissued both "Pony" and the followup, "The New Lee Dorsey" (1966) in greatly expanded editions, so that the two CDs - together gathering 47 tracks - now make available all of Dorsey's singles, and a few unissued gems as well, from 1965-70.
"Ride Your Pony" covers material from 1965 - 68, generally a bit earlier than the "New" set, which takes us from 1966 - 70. But the fact that Sundazed does not stick to a purely chronological approach only enhances the enjoyability and variety of both sets.
Dorsey's vocal persona is generally wry, warm, distinctive, and almost conversational. From the chicken scratch guitars and dance beat of "Pony" (a response of sorts to Jr. Walker's "Shotgun"), to the lazy rhythm and bemused tone of "Work Work Work" (with Dorsey characteristically improvising during the fade, "anybody got a cigarette?") the infectious funk and understated optimism of Dorsey's work is always a pleasure, and gets better the more you play it. His work is like a regular visit from an old friend, always welcome. Throughout this set and its companion CD Toussaint adds splendid piano, marvelous horn arrangements, and superb rhythm tracks from the cream of New Orleans' session pool, including Roy Montrell, June Gardner, Deacon John, and - starting around 1967 - The Meters. Other bonuses on "Pony" include both sides of a terrific Dorsey/Betty Harris duet from '67, the "Tighten Up"-inspired two-part "Four Corners," and much more. Dorsey could convey heartache when given the chance, and Toussaint's production formula is remarkably flexible. As usual with Sundazed reissues, the remastering is superb throughout, as are the graphics and Bill Dahl's liner notes. "Ride Your Pony" and "The New Lee Dorsey" are both highly recommended collections, and if you still want more check out Relic's "Ya Ya" for the early '60s material on Fury or the classic Polydor set "Yes We Can Can" (1970, issued in the US by Chronicles over a decade ago, and last year by Australia's Raven)

5 out of 5 stars Lee Dorsey : The REAL DEAL ! (that's right BABY!).......2000-06-19

The Funk, the groove, the voice, the band, the head scratchin production, the songs, the New Orleans thing, oh yes my friends, this LP has it all. And did I mention TWELVE bOnUs tracks! And they're all the BOMB! Is that the funky sound of The Meters backing up Lee on this LP, oh yes, I'm afraid so. And what about the the "rip-off factor", oh yes sir, I do believe that producer/writer Allen Toussant was working overtime, trying to make old Lee sound like the hitmakers of the day (and let me remind you that the "day" in question was the soul-tacular year of 1966!)everybody from Brother Ray Charles (on Can You Hear Me) to Junior Walker (Ride Your Pony). but make no mistake, it mostly a full time non stop funky booty shake 1960's New Orleans get down party! The organ on the end of "My Old Car", the drums on "Four Corners", the duet with Betty Harris (on "Love Lots Of Lovin")or the ode to a stripper ("Go Go Girl") are EACH worth the price of this fine LP. If you're simply curious, hungry for the Southern Soul Stew, or a long time Lee Dorsey fan, hesitate no more, this is the real thing. Amen!
