As the godfather of modern-day turntablism, Qbert has been long overdue for a solo release. Wave Twisters is the obvious brainchild of Qbert's long-term fascination with sound and its malleability: using stacks of eclectic vinyl as his fodder, Qbert creates an album of songs by turning scraps of found sound into everything from rhythm sections to melodic tracks to quirky pieces of dialogue. You don't need to understand the technical complexities of scratching to appreciate it; Wave Twisters is simply the future of the funk--sonic play transformed by an equal mix of aural insanity and genius and put all back together by the hands of a master. --Oliver Wang

Album Description

DJQBert's Wave Twisters (Classic Cassette Tape) - The classic that spawned the movie.

" As you may know by now, this album is a concept album. Not only in story but in things I wanted to do in music as well. I wanted to have a variety of songs offering new and different things from skratch styles, to ways of composing, to ideas that people can make something new out of. At the same time, keeping its story line"

- Qbert

Album Description

Out of print in the U.S.! First full length official release from 1998 by one of the world's greatest and certainly most innovative turntablists (and former member of Invisibl Skratch Piklz alongside Mix Master Mike amongst others). Wave Twisters is the first 'scratch concept album' and tells the tale of an entire civilization that communicates only through the sound of scratching.

5 out of 5 stars Qbert is dA ish............2006-08-01

Dj qbert < one of the greatest if not the greatest scracth dj of all times.

5 out of 5 stars what hasn't already been said??.......2005-01-29

Altough this album came out many years ago, the choas and organized madness that layers this piece still overwhelm even the most hardcore of tablist heads. even to those outside of the scratch community in the more "public music" mindset that appriciate it for the concept album that it is may still not understand the audio of the album unless they accompany that with the dvd film that was spawned by the album. This cd is....for lack of a better comparison, hip hops "Tommy", its "Rocky Horror Picture Show", or even "the Wall" to really praise this piece. To say it so few words, this is not a hip-hop concept album. but rather, it is THE hip-hop EPIC.

3 out of 5 stars DJ Qbert's frenzied scratchfest.......2004-04-14

Fan's of turntablism and speaker shredding scratching will enjoy this CD. 'Wave Twisters' is a scratchfest cavalcade, similar to the turntablist ferocity of 'Live at Future Primitive Sound Session' by Cut Chemist. Hypnotic, trancelike, with spine-chilling beats. The samples are minimal, but maintain soulful, almost tribal-like pulsating rhythms, somewhat like NWA's 'Straight Outta Compton'. The scratches aurally bombard you from all angles, almost like spread-out laser-beams echoing in the dark. It's amazing how something relatively stripped-down can sound so powerful and dense. Essential.

5 out of 5 stars HIP HOP THAT SHAKES YOUR BRAINSTEM.......2003-12-10

This album rocks intensely, to say the very least. Buy it. It will make all your hip hop dreams come true and destroy any hopes you had of becoming the world's greatest dj in one listen.

5 out of 5 stars He's the Man!!.......2003-03-02

By far one of the most technically and musically talented dj's so far! Always ten steps ahead of the rest of the turntablist world. This can only be said about only so few dj's out there, It's been said to never show this man whatever scratch or new technique you've invented, 'cuz he'll take what you've invented and re-invent it and make it better. After hearing this album... I can beleive that!! Much respect to Qbert for paving the way in this art.. he's one of the few that make dj'n what it is, AN ARTFORM!! He's defenitely the man!!

5 out of 5 stars Killarmy - Silent Weapons For Quiet Wars.......2006-08-31

Killarmy's first album, that came out in 1997. This is probably theyre best album in quite a few ways, lyrics AND production. But let me explain.

In lyrics, Killarmy is DOPE. They never dissapoint me with the lyrics they drop at all. Each member from Killarmy is unique in the way they write/rhyme and drop it. If you like lyrics in hip-hop, dont pass this album up. I cant really pick a song where they stand out lyrically, because they do in all of them!

Production, straight dope. All Wu related production also, which is a good thing. This album is grimey also. Fans of that type of hiphop should love this album for sure. My favorite beat on the album is probably, "Wake Up". Dope song.

Overall, if your a Wu fan, youll like this album, well you should! But its the first cd from Killarmy as a group, so make sure to get this one first! You wont be dissapointed!

My Top 5 Songs
1.Dress To Kill
2.Universal Soilders
3.Wake Up
4.Wu-Renegades
5.Full Moon

5 out of 5 stars A MASTERPIECE.......2005-10-27

Killarmy's first album is one of the best produced albums of all time. Its is lyrically sharp and dungeon as can be.I purchased this when it first came out and thought that it was a pretty solid effort.I had no idea that this album would grow on me the way it did.The night I changed my mind on how I thought of this album was the night I sat in the dark and listened to this album on a monster system.I have since practiced this sitting in the dark ritual many times on my favorite albums. Its the best way to listen to music. This album deserves to be recognized as one of the greats but it never will.To many wack cats dominating the radio.I have a felling that this hip hop faze is about over and mainstream america will start listening to something else. When this happens albums like this can be made again.Groups can make their vision shine all the way through an album instead of a couple of wack tracks for the radio and then a bunch of second rate tracks to fill in the gaps. This album is all blazes with no filler.Cop it.If you dont like it at first......IT WILL GROW ON YA.

5 out of 5 stars What HipHop should be........2005-10-03

This is a really great ablum from a classic era of hiphop, the focus is all on creating the brutal evocative soundscapes. Combat Rap. I've listened to this album at least once a week since the day I got it over ten years ago. But then again I care about hiphop.

5 out of 5 stars The Gods Are Here........2005-07-26

How do you know a album is dope listen to it constantly while elevating your mind, then have to quit elevating for 4 years come back home and it still seizes your mind.

5 out of 5 stars All Out War.......2005-02-17

Killarmy (pronounced Killer Army) a spin-off from Wu-Tang Clan with a more military mentality as the six man crew's debut album's title Silent Weapons For Quiet Wars may depict. Fifteen of the seventeen tracks were produced by 4th Disciple whom created a signature sound for the group to make a mark of originality. Lead title "Dress To Kill" chorus "...Grab your army suits / and your phat black boots / military gear, and go out like troops..." is the direction for the entire LP. Some of the sample found "Clash Of The Titans" featuring Street Life resembles a Wu tune as four of the six members spit rapid street knowledge with a third world aspect to it. The off beat piano and flows stood out for "Seems It Never Fails" is an acquired sound that highlights the album. The slow, eerie track "Universal Soldiers" added to the sharp flow of the Army. Knowledge and awakening the minds of the listeners was the aim of this RZA produced track "Wake Up" featuring Hell Razah & Prodigal Sunn. "Wu-Renegades" is a mixture of genres to create a classic East Coast hip-hop feel with violins, bass and piano chords, but the five emcees blessed the instrumental that have to be repeated to fully understand the complexity of the lyrics. Taken dialect from war movies as the hook and or bridge, "Under Siege" stands strong with an oriental off-beat feel. The other RZA produced track "War Face" as said by 9th Prince "...we run trains on RZA produced tracks..." "5 Stars" featuring Masta Killa is a good song but some of the special effects and sounds overshadow the volume of the voices of each emcee's lyrics. This album is definitely a sleeper and Killarmy maybe should have simply named this album Riot.

4 out of 5 stars I have not heard this, but..........2004-09-25

I have a strong suspicion that Phoenix Orion could possibly be Silver Synth from the Analog Brothers, and he could also possibly be Lord Have Mercy from the Flip Mode Squad...these theories are eating my brain...Am I loosing it here?

5 out of 5 stars Futuristic Hip Hop like you've never heard.......2002-02-24

This album is on another level. With beats from drum n bass to techno and ragga hip hop, I've never heard anyone else pull it off quite like Phoenix. The album deals with A.I. as the enemy of man kind. It started as something cool and cute, and eventually turned into a killer and a conquer of man (it's the Master Control Program 3000). What if he's really from the future? I think I might be starting to believe it. After hearing Zimulated Experiexz and Secret Wars, I'm a Phoenix Orion fiend. I'm counting down the days for the releases of Zimulated Experienxz 2, 3080 flux, and more! His newest release Alien Nation: Earth Defenders is blazin'! Check out sciphirecordings.com

5 out of 5 stars phe-o-ree strikes back.......2002-02-04

commander phoenix orion is back with a vengance in his most recent album SECRET WARS. this time he's got a new crew and is out to beat some new heads. this album is the total... whip. i was pleasantly surprised to find the cd is over 50min long -- i was expecting a shorter ep.

SECRET WARS is an aural juggernaut with intelligent lyrics and bangin hybrid hiphop/drumb&bass music. tracks like MUSIC IS, SCIFIDELITY, MAN AGAINST MACHINE and the title track SECRET WARS will smack you in your face until your head is forced to thrash around with the beat. my only gripe is i dont think the tracks were mixed together in the best way (i mean the actual track order etc., no problems with the levels/audio quality.. everything sounds tight) this is underground experimental future-hop at its best.

there are so many great songs on this disc, if ur into stuff that's on a differnt level from your average comercial raptrash, then you gotta be listening to phoenix. buy this cd. and buy his first release, zimulated experiencez. hurry and buy them both immediately. and while you're at it, get deltron3030 too... you can thank me later.

after a delay that seemed like FOREVER i'm finally pleased to have SECRET WARS in my stereo. now all i wanna know is when are we gettin a release of 3080flux? and how bout some alien nation stuff too? give it up, chumps!

4 out of 5 stars Pure Heat Once Again From The Phoenix.......2002-02-02

Finally, Phoenix's 2nd relaese. This time from ATOMCANDY. First off, this album sounds great. It's beautifully recorded and Phoenix rhymes with such force and confidence it should be studied by other MCs. His mic presence is simply awesome. The subject matter is Cyber as expected and no one can pull it off like him. The beats are like Dr. Dre meets the Matrix and they pound. You couldn't really ask for anymore. This album is simply wicked.
Some complaints maybe too many skits and not enough tracks. This maybe just me since I already heard most of the main tracks long before the release. Also the skits do need to be there as the CD tells a story. This CD is supposed to be the first part of a trilogy and I can't wait for the rest
Choice cuts are Microphone Chakrastone, Music Is, the Drum N Bass "Sci-Fidelity", and the 12 minute posse cut Secret Wars.

4 out of 5 stars Unmissable BASS classic!.......1998-11-07

I just had to review this, given that no one has taken the bait... "You remember the saying - more bounce to the ounce!" MIAMI BASS WARS II is one of THE best cruin' around town bass cd's you could hope to own. Only the stunning TECHMASTER P.E.B. Bass Computer offers such consistant song quality (having only one stinker "3. Shady") That said, MBW is primarily instrumental with vocals, samples and some rap served over heaps of warm, juicy bass tones. The political and cultural overtones make for an interesting and refreshing change of pace from the typical "How low can you go?" gaggle of would be competitors. MBW calls for a fairly modest investment in equipment. Having heard this cd on a number of car stereos, MBW sounds best when the bass is powered to a pair of 12" woofers. Bandpass and 10 inch speakers don't seem to reproduce the music as solidly. Factory car stereos and speakers need not apply as they cannot handle the demand. Any serious Bass buff should own this classic cd!"Up and down Killeen for a couple of hours - took a wrong turn ended up at Fort Hood towers - my BASS was loud - I drew a crowd - MP's were coming down - handcuffs and me aint never been friends - headed back to Killeen so I could BASS again!
