3 out of 5 stars Sousa.......2007-07-25

I love Sousa marches but this recording while comprehensive and cheep lacks much to be desired in the musical rendension. It lacks the spark and musicality of Sousa.

5 out of 5 stars Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31

This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.

When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.

This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.

Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.

5 out of 5 stars Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01

I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.

5 out of 5 stars How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07

Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not top-knotch Pac.......2007-05-13

Decent price, came on time. Don't expect this CD to be as good as the other 2Pac albums.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good I Guess.......2007-04-26

Loyal To The Game is alright, I just felt Eminem used too much of his own style when he made the actual music though

Crooked N***a Too (remix), and Loyal To The Game (DJ Quick remix) were better though, they were more 2Pac's style

All in all, It's alright.

4 out of 5 stars HOW DO U KNOW THAT?.......2007-04-01

How DO you really know that 2Pac wouldn't roll with Eminem and 50 Cent? I mean he sure as hell wouldn't roll with the imposer of himself, Ja Rule!

But anyway, this release from Amaru/Interscope records really surpassed some of the Pac's after-death material that has been being released recently. While seemingly stronger than "Pac's Life" and other crap that's been coming out, it doesn't seem to surpass his own actual album when he was still alive, but then again, you have to give props to Em in creating a still dope album.

While some of the rhymes seem screwed with and Pac's voice is enhanced to say "G-Unit" and such on a certain track, Eminem's style and production is what keeps people listening...see, what most people don't know or recognize is that Shady is just as good of a producer of beats as he is and emcee.

It is definitely a much better choice than the lame and falsely-acclaimed flop, "Pac's Life".

Cameos include Eminem, G-Unit, Nate Dogg, the Outlawz, Sleepy Brown, Big Syke and many more...

Top Songs:
1.) Ghetto Gospel feat. Elton John
2.) A Crooked N***a Too
3.) Do For Love
4.) Out on Bail
5.) Black Cotton feat. Eminem, Kastro, and Young Noble

2 out of 5 stars The third murder of Tupac.......2006-12-14

What was Afeni thinking when she let Eminem executive produce this whole album? His beats are zany and painful to the ears and sometimes his beats sound like just plain noise. Its bad enough Em screws up his songs with crummy beats and has him saying G-unit and Shady but to put him on tracks with Elton John(Em's boytoy), G-unit and Obie Trice? C'MON! You and I know he would never made songs with these guys. Standout Tracks: The last for songs on the album that werent produced by Em: PO N***A BLUES(vintage Tupac joint, pretty deep), HENNESSY, CROOKED N***A TOO and LOYAL TO THE GAME REMIX(Dj Quik's verse was fire!). Ghetto Gospel would have been a standout tracks if werent for that campy beat and Elton John(WTF!!!!!) on the hook. Albums like these make me sad because it shows what people do to save their careers from extinction. STOP CAPITALIZING OFF DEAD PEOPLE YOU F****NG PARASITES. REST IN PEACE TUPAC AMARU SHAKUR AND F*** YOU EMINEM AND SUGE KNIGHT!

5 out of 5 stars stop judging Afeni and Marshall.......2006-11-04

Now listen, Loyal to The Game is an essential to have. Don't listen to all the haters who downplay this album. Now I am a longtime 2pac fan, maybe some stuff you say about the 'putting words in Pac's mouth' and 'speeding up'/'tampering with vocal' is true but give marshall a break. Put yourself in Eminem's(marshall) shoes. What if you were the producer-you'd want a false shout out, you'd want your artists to have credentials, and you'd want to somehow match YOUR beats with Pac. By any means necessary you'd do the above if it was you. Afeni gave Eminem full creative control and by all means he took control. Don't judge the man for that. i still think this is some of Tupac's hottest posthumas $h*! since RU Still Down or Makaveli the Death Row set. Pac's vocals aren't that bad nor the beats, it's cool to hear uncanny shoutouts, and by god 2pac w/ 50 cent that's good! Now stop hatin' you ungrateful ******** and listen to what Afeni and Marshall think 2pac should sound like on Loyal to the Game, and remember this only Loyal to the Game-em production wise it's only a one time deal with Em and Pac so listen! Be on lookout for Pac's life!
E.T. out~!

The first voice you hear on the new Snoop record is that of Master P, introducing the latest recruit to the No Limit army. It's a message, albeit a subtle one: in the team game of hip-hop, there's been a trade, and our man P gained the advantage. Da Game... is Snoop's first release on the label, and it is a No Limit release through and through--in spite of the fact that, in the context of No Limit's marketing megalopoly, Snoop's Merlot mixes poorly with the rest of the crew's Asti Spumanti. Fortunately, his flow has always been blessed with a Southern swing, and the Beats by the Pound gumbo funk is a natural for the Doggfather, even if there's little on the album that pushes the creative envelope. As for Snoop himself, he spends ample time attempting to evoke previous glories with the uninspired "Gin & Juice II" and "Still a G Thang," though his strongest moments come with Mia X on "Slow Down" and with Mystikal and C-Murder on "See Ya When I Get There," both classic No Limit material. --Jon Caramanica

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars This album's to be thrown out the window not heard.......2007-07-25

Lets get one thing clear. Snoop and crunk dont mix. You can tell that Master P had full control of this poopfest. Snoop is a laidback rapper. No Limit artists yell so loud you cant even hear the beat. How can you not see something wrong with this transition? The only good tracks are Woof, Still A G Thang, Dont Let Go and Slow Down. The rest of this album is straight...... Filler: Snoop mutilates the old BDP classic Love's Gonna Get Ya with the extremely soft sounding Doggz Gonna Get Ya. His main man died in 96 but he gives tribute to his fleabitten mutt that passed on in See Ya When I Get There(why do we like this fool again?). Snoop ruins a good thing with Gin & Juce II which sounds like a bad horror flick and Get Bout It And Rowdy is too stupid to describe with words. Dishonorable Mentions: Hoes Money& Clout, Snoop World, D.O.G's Get Lonely Too, Hustle & Ball,Tru Tank Dogs and the rest of this album. Bottom Line: Snoop's first album on No Limit is a certified stinker. Even though his later albums on No Limit where good this one was fully controlled by Master P and you can tell. Snoop was out of his element on this one plus the beats were rank to begin with.

3 out of 5 stars Snoop Attempts to Resurrect Himself on No Limit With Mediocre Results.......2007-06-07

Unlike consistent early albums like 'Doggystyle', this No Limit release contains alot of filler and useless tracks. Some of No Limit's goons on here sound out of place with Snoop on here as well, but C-Murder, Mystikal and Silkk the Shocker do a commendable job here.

As for the songs, 'Slow Down' has a nice beat (though the lyrics leave much to be desired). 'Woof!' is fantastic, and includes Mystikal on it who adds his trademark crazy flow to it. 'Gin & Juice II' is not nearly as good as the classic we all know and love, but it's still a decent remake that is much better than track 10, 'Still a G Thang', which is a typical boring track on here. 'Tru Tank Dogs' and 'Game Of Life' have some interesting beats but only decent lyrics (it's No Limit though, so what do you expect...?). 'Dp Gangsta' is a very nice track, and the cheesy No Limit production is actually pretty nice there.

As for the rest... it's a mish-mash of the good, bad, and boring. I never cared about No Limit before and this is the only No Limit album in my collection (my friend left a Master P cd over my house once and I thought it was s**t), but this is an alright release. There's simply too much filler on it and the No Limit production sounds outdated (you can tell what year this is from). But when it's all said and done, 'Da Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told' ends up being a decent listen.

3 out of 5 stars Not His Worst.......2006-07-17

Snoop attempted to resurrect his career by joining No Limit after Deathrow crashed. This is his first No Limit release and it is not his worst album but nothing compared to the deathrow releases. I'm not going to judge this album on its comparison to his early albums but he could have done better for this. He still has his lazy, Laid back voice which you just can't dislike but this album needed the following
1. Guest appearances by the people he rapped with while on deathrow not these talentless, annoying no limit characters
2. Part of the reason some of his other albums became famous was because they were produced by Dr Dre. Dr Dre gives great beats etc and Snoop needs those.
However these tracks aren't all that bad and seeing i'm a big Snoop fan I can appreciate all his albums even though I rather Snoop Doggy Dogg. My favourite song would have to be the single "Still A G Thang" but some other good tracks are DP Gangsta, Game Of Life, Ain't Nuthin Personal, Snoop World, I Can't Take The Heat, Woof!, Gin & Juice II and Doggz Gonna Get Ya.

4 out of 5 stars still ah g thang.......2005-07-22

I like this album snoops wit no limit I wolud say 60% of this album is tight but there songs thats just off the chain thoe there was a movie to this album but I nevah seen it I would get it thoe tight songs are 1,3,4,10"dpg!",13,14,17,19,21 tha best! piece.

2 out of 5 stars Misleaded.......2005-05-07

I should've listened to my instinct and moved on to another CD, but instead listened to my friend....This album did not do anything for me...Too bad it cost me $17 in 1998. I tried to trade it and they didn't want it....hmm.

I give it two stars, one for the effort with another label and another for the artwork.

5 out of 5 stars Something very precious.......2004-11-16

John Philip Sousa was a great musician and a great American. These recorded relics are very fascinating, and sometimes most vivid, reminders of his greatness

5 out of 5 stars Great historical resource.......2000-08-24

This set consists of every recording released under the name of "the Sousa Band", from 1897-1930. Since some of these recordings are over 100 years old, they tend to be somewhat scratchy and occasionally faint. If you're a casual fan or you're buying your first Sousa record, your money can be better spent elsewhere.

However, these recordings are an invaluable resourse for students, performers, and teachers. Even with the limitations of early recording devices, there is no better demonstration of the style and nuance of the "March King" than these performances under his own baton. Also, the chance to actually hear Sousa's voice as he introduces the great "Stars and Stripes Forever" is to step into the past.

Da Game... is Snoop's first release on the label, and it is a No Limit release through and through--in spite of the fact that, in the context of No Limit's marketing megalopoly, Snoop's Merlot mixes poorly with the rest of the crew's Asti Spumanti.

3 out of 5 stars SOMEWHAT OF A DISSAPOINTMENT.......2004-06-03

THIS WAS SNOOP DOGG'S NO LIMIT DEBUT. AND COMPARED TO HIS FIRST 2 CDS THAT HE DID WITH DEATH ROW, THIS IS SOMEWHAT OF A LETDOWN! BUT, THE CD HAS SOME COOL SONGS. LIKE ''SNOOP WORLD'', ''WOOF!'', ''DP GANGSTA'', AND ''WHATCHA GON DO''. SNOOP IS A VERY VERY TALENTED RAPPER, BUT LET'S FACE THE FACTS, SNOOP JUST AIN'T CUT OUT TO BE WITH A LABEL LIKE NO LIMIT. IN MANY WAYS, SNOOP DOGG IS THE REASON WHY NO LIMIT GOT AS BIG AS IT DID. NOT THE BEST SNOOP CD OUT THERE, BUT, THERE'S MUCH WORSE STUFF OUT THERE. BUT, LET'S SAY THIS, IF SNOOP DON'T WANNA BE WITH DEATH ROW, HE SHOULD [WHICH HE'S DOING NOW] OWN HIS OWN LABEL. THAT'S THE BEST WAY FOR HIM TO GO NOW.

1 out of 5 stars Desperate.......2001-06-26

This album is not Snoop Dogg he sounds like he has been in the recording studio smokin something. The songs are nothin like doggystyle or tha doggfather. Gin and Juice 2 and Still a G Thang are bad ideas probably be Master P to sell the album for people who will have a quick look at the back and the fact that it is a Snoop album will always sell copies but if it wasnt Snoop and it was a new comer it would be his last album. DONT BUY THIS YOUR WASTING YOUR MONEY INSTEAD BUY THE WAR DISC FROM ICE CUBE.

5 out of 5 stars the best rap.......2001-05-26

Everybody has bashed this album since the day it came out.I strongly feel that this is an underated album.Just because he joined No Limit does not mean he cant make quality music. How can you go wrong with joints like Snoop World,Show me luv,Whatcha gonna do,Still a G Thang, and Doggz gonna get ya.Get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sousa Marches.......2001-03-08

This CD is an excellent recording of fine performances of a couple of well-known and many less-often-heard Sousa marches. Those less familiar quickly become as pleasant to listen to as the old favorites. Anyone who enjoys such music will receive more than one full hour of good listening.
