Album Description

Toni Collette delivers a velvet gloved punch with her much anticipated debut album, which contains eleven self-penned tracks written over the last ten years. 'Beautiful Awkward Pictures' charts Collette's fluctuating emotions as she's worked her way round the globe and reflects her growth as a person and an artist. Laying herself open in her usual honest and unaffected way, Collette's lyrics are often poetic, intimate observations of life and the world around her and this makes for a heady, soul-stirring mix.

5 out of 5 stars Artistically deep and beautiful.......2007-05-25

I'd never heard of Toni Collette & The Finish until I did a web search on Toni Collette after being very impressed with her role in the recent movie 'Little Miss Sunshine'. I saw Muriel's Wedding years ago and have always cherished her portrayal in that film.

As soon as I listened to music samples on her band's website, I was taken in in a way that has only happened to me once before, in regards to bands. Her music has a genuine, clear depth. Each listen reveals a different part of a multi-faceted, beautiful, soulful crystal. The music holds heartfelt mysteries and is unabashed. The songs and lyrics are very well-crafted. And her voice is so true in clarity, raw with emotion yet polished by grace - it is unfettered, real, and pretty!

I would highly recommend this cd, it's unlike anything I've ever heard before. I look forward to many more listenings as I fall more in love with each listen.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2007-02-19

What a brilliant album!

Admittedly, I was inspired by her name to invest in this product - and anyone who saw her as the lead in Broadway's "The Wild Party" will agree that that is not a bad thing. This woman can SING! Toni's voice is mellow, subtle and STRONG...

The instrumentation thoughout this album is superb. Toni has surrounded herself with the best mix of musicians and producers etc to get everything out of this recording experience.

First single "Beautiful Awkward Pictures" is simply gorgeous - second single "Look Up" is more energised and, like the rest of this album, affects you spiritually (in a positive way) before you realise it has even touched your soul.

This album is non-pretentious; non-diva; no-holds-barred, unabbreviated and unadulterated brilliance.

The only way this could be improved is by adding some bonus material ("Don't Dream It's Over" from the "Cosi" soundtrack . . .) hopefully a DVD with a live performance and the promo-video's will be released when the promotion is closing up...

Initial Australian pressings of this CD had a mastering fault in the eleventh track - I contacted the supplier (via toni's website) and they happily exchanged it by mail to a corrected copy. Hopefully this won't stop people from enjoying this amazing CD.[...]

5 out of 5 stars Not only can she act..........2007-02-15

...but she can sing and write music too! Beautiful Awkward Pictures is an exquisite piece of work. Mellow, soothing, calm...I'm gonna run out of words. It's just plain beautiful. They're about to start touring out here in Australia. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!

While Montreal's given the world a dozen exciting, chart-topping, jagged-pomo indie bands this past year alone, let us not forget the more subtle charms of Vancouver's indie-pop scene. With bands like Destroyer, the Organ, New Pornographers, and Frog Eyes, it would be fair to call Vancouver's music darker and more lyrically strange, while tending towards guitar-heavy, orchestral pop in terms of its sound. True to its roots, the Awkward Stage is the cleverly named brainchild of Shane Nelken, whose frequent side-dude spots in bands has earned him the reputation of "Vancouver indie scene's secret weapon." With smarty-pants song titles like "The Morons Are Winning," "T-Rexia Nervosa," and "I Love You, Hipster Darling," it's clear that a certain amount of self-awareness is at play here. But there's not so much that it detracts from this very pleasant, tastefully decadent pop album. --Mike McGonigal

      Album Description

"Forget your age, forget you're clever; the awkward stage, it lasts forever." That's a mantra that serves to remind us that we never truly shed our painfully insecure and ignominiously crushed youth. It is with us always. The Awkward Stage serves as a musical backdrop for those universal feelings of shame, inadequacy, anger, failure, and loneliness--a revenge of sorts in the form of the most intelligent and brilliantly crafted pop songs to come along in quite some time. Born in Winnipeg and raised in Vancouver, Shane Abram Nelken, leader/songwriter for The Awkward Stage, has long been considered one of Vancouver's best-kept secrets. Where some play hard to get, he has taken it a step further and played "hard to find." Much like TV Fall Guy Lee Majors, he's the unknown stuntman who made Vancouver's indie scene sound so fine. Nelken's ability to seamlessly shift among a wide variety of musical styles (and instruments) has made him a much sought after "hired ringer" by many of Vancouver's elite acts: A.C. Newman (New Pornographers), Sparrow, Vancouver Nights, The Ronnie Hayward Trio, The Come Ons, The Buzzards, and The Blue Lodge Quartet, to name but a few. The debut album on Mint Records, Heaven is for Easy Girls, was co-produced and engineered by the New Pornographers' drummer Kurt Dahle, and possesses that distinctive intangible musical essence--some say "The Vancouver Sound"--initially spearheaded and made famous by those notorious New Pornographers.

      Playing Time - 43:10
SONGS: Same Walls, Broken Heart String, Songs Play Me, Bitter Tears, Silver Wings, Ship Song, Hold On, Here's To You, Ballad Of Gordy Quist, Six Feet Down, Fade, Lindsay's Song

Gordy Quist's debut album takes a leisurely approach and has a comfortable demeanor for his original Texas-based Americana music where the message is paramount. With a likeable voice and laid-back style, singer-songwriter Quist is sure to build a devoted following as long as he lets the songs play him and he's able to tap his inner muse. Quist finds most of his inspiration from people he's met and lessons learned through life and love. His "Ballad of Gordy Quist" starts a few generations back, tells his grandfather's story about loving the land, laying down seed, working hard, facing life's trials, and knowing right from wrong.

Most songs adopt rawboned and lean arrangements that allow his pleasant folkish delivery to take center stage. "Silver Wings," for example, offers guitar and harmonica to accompany his lead vocals on a tale of a man who "rode his dreams hard `til they couldn't take more." Co-producer Jack Saunders plays bass, baritone guitar, and sings harmonies. Jamie Griffin also sings harmonies. Other instrumental support comes from Damien Roomets (dobro), Rick Richards (percussion), Kym Warner (mandolin), Eleanor Whitmore (fiddle), and Allen Huff (accordion).

Quist grew up outside of Houston, Tx, and formed a rock/funk band called "Lucky Southern" while playing football at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. The electric guitar was sold to fund a backpack trip through Europe, and Quist then returned to Houston. He often shares the stage with Eric Taylor, Guy Clark, Paul Thorn, Caroline Herring, Sidehill Gougers and others. With his acoustic sensibilities, he's a welcome addition to the Texas music movement. Townes Van Zandt would have been proud of him. (Joe Ross, staff writer for Bluegrass Now, Roseburg, Oregon)

      5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2007-02-19

What a beautiful piece of work!

I have rated only 3 stars overall as this single is short timewise; and offers an unnecessary album version.

This single contains only 3 tracks, including non-album track "The Hours", written by Toni and based on the movie of the same name she appeared in. Also the single version ("Strung Out") and the album version ("As It Always Was") of the title track.

The artwork on this release is almost worth the cover price alone. Well designed and well executed.

Anyone thinking this is just another actress with time on her hands is in for a surprise - maybe her name will help boost initial sales, but the sheer artistry of these recordings will provide the momentum to keep all involved appreciative.

If you like Australia's Deborah Conway; or in general appreciate women with strong, non-diva-ish voices; this is a release for you. Toni Collette & The Finish are one's to watch - new single "Look Up" released shortly.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Dark.......2007-06-29

Sometime in the future, this record will be regarded as a masterpiece.

I compare this favorably to the works of Mike Keneally or Andy Partridge, in terms of the music's ability to evoke a myriad of feelings.
Like a chameleon, this haunting cycle of songs takes on different colors- depending upon the listener's moods.

Conceptually the song cycle is related to the hypocrisy of established religion. J's words are inscrutable at first, and with repeated listens, the verses slowly unfold.

"Raggedy Ann" is simply amazing. If you think you have this song figured out, check out the video!

        5 out of 5 stars Classic album.......2006-11-08

I haven't stopped playing this album since I bought it. At first it seems like a bunch of nice songs with beautiful production. After you keep listening, different layers open up and lyrics jump out and then you realize that it is making a huge statement about the current situation of religious conflict both in the world and within individuals. Destined to be revisted in the future. Buy it now.

        5 out of 5 stars Solid Album.......2006-04-14

When I hear a new artist I'm normally reluctant to fall in love with a first listen, but after my first listen to J. DiMenna's Awkward Buildings I was hooked. I had the good fortune to be able to hear this album for the first time last summer and have proceeded to listen to it many times since. I recommend it.

        4 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise.......2001-11-15

I had heard of Ty, but wasn't sure what to expect when I bought the album. After a few listens, I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. Some of the tracks (Mind Made Up, Break the Lock) are really easy to get into, others take a little time. Very good stuff.

        4 out of 5 stars At last.......2001-03-29

At long last the most anticipated British Hip Hop album has finally landed. Heads like me have been waiting for the longest for Ty to drop his joint and the wait has definately been worth it! Ty's now famous rhyme skills are in evidence lyrics laced with humour and clever rhymes, and the beats are on point. For anybody who has been sleeping on British Hip Hop you need to cop this, you get me though? (south London slang)

5 out of 5 stars Hip Hop Perfection.......2001-03-20

As far as I know Ty has been in the hip hop culture for years, and this albums shows it. Experience and raw skills are large contributing factors to the excellence of this album. Every track on this album is one you'll want to repeatedly hear. Tracks about personal experiences such as 'Hercules', fun stories such as 'The Tale', raps about his different experiences with jealousy on 'Jealousy', battle raps, French rap and more all demonstrate the musical diversity of this album, and Ty's style.

This album is a pleasant rarity in that it doesn't feature many people at all. The only other MC's who rap on this album are on one track, 'Zaibo', who rap in French.

Ty's rapping style is humorous, mellow and all together refreshing. His lyrics are excellent, not always rhyming... but always sounding smooth and perfect.

All together 'Awkward' is a album well worth buying, and when you do buy it, you're paying for every track on this album in that they're all excellent quality, and if you're anything like me... you'll like them all!

        5 out of 5 stars Honest.......2001-02-15

This album displays the sort of honesty that is unfortunately VERY rare these days in rappers. TY is in another league, he displays charisma, great lyricism and humour. Musically the album is a treat too containing something that is garaunteed to please all. A great album from a true artist.

        5 out of 5 stars Wah blow!!.......2001-02-10

Ty is like Britain's answer to De La Soul, That's not to say he sounds like 'em, but he seems to rap about the same kind of subjects and with the same sort of philosophy. I bought the album 'cause I've seen Ty a few times at the lyrical lounge at the jazz cafe in camden and I liked his flows. The album is certainly not dissapointing, with lots of live instrumentation, the legendary DJ Pogo, and ty's philosophical rhyme style it can't fail to be a winner! I know most U.S. cats don't think british hip hop is any good, but this album is the bomb! Buy it if you like The Roots, Dela, Mos def, Talib Kweli and you will definately be feelin' it! This is a Hip-hop classic, make no mistake. Oh, and don't forget to check out Roots Manuva's album too .
