4 out of 5 stars Good music.......2006-04-09

I'm not generally a fan of most southern hip hop, but I've got a few exceptions, and 8Ball & MJG is one. I've listened to some of their other stuff--Top of the World, Coming Out Hard and the later Almost Famous--and this is my favorite so far. The reason for this and the reason a lot of their fans deem this their biggest letdown is probably the same: production.

The production on Space Age 4 Eva is smooth, somewhat "spacey" and resembles Kurupt's Smoke Boogie more than anything else. They've shied away from their earlier, more southern-bumping production on most of the tracks and began to lay down beats that I personally can appreciate more (more melodic, less repetetive than a lot of what hip hop fans are used to seeing coming from the south).

With that plus the duo's usual talent for rhyme AND flow, the only real letdown is the volume of tracks about sex and/or women/hoes. Personally I don't get much into these types of songs, although a few (like Always) do stand out.

5 out of 5 stars The original Dirty South pimps once again ahead of their time.......2005-12-10

You can never say enough about Eightball and MJG - those guys are legends and to me, they're the greatest duo ever. They've been putting it down for the Dirty South ever since the early 90's, and they're the first ones from the South to rap about pimpin', and gettin' crunk. "Space Age 4 Eva" is their fifth album. This time, the guys left Tony Draper's Suave Records (financial disputes), and put this record out on JCor Entertainment, with themselves being the executive producers. Their previous four albums were all classics, and that doesn't change on this one. It seems that 8Ball and MJG never quit to take their style musically to a new level, and on "Space Age 4 Eva" they do it once again, coming out with a fresh, new, futuristic style, which is yet not that different from what they did till then. T-Mixx is gone, but the album's production is a masterpiece, plain and simple. The 14 songs are handled by 5 producers: Veteran Memphis producer Jazze Pha (3 songs), Corey Woodard (3 songs), MJG (he produced a lot of the songs on previous albums, and proves again he's one of the best producers out there as well)... On this album, Ball and G take their game nationwide, using two of the best producers from the East (Swizz Beatz) and the West (DJ Quik): Each does a couple of awesome songs. The sound is rich, musical and very diverse. As far as eightball and MJG's rapping, I don't have to tell you, but I still will. Those two are just untouchable on the mic: the CHARISMA (something nowdays rappers lack so badly!), the lyrical skills, being down-to-earth, the REALNESS. The two are very different: Eighball is a bit more laid back, and he's more of a story teller, his style is more narrative, and his raspy deep bass voice and sick flow are VERY addictive. MJG is more energetic, quicker, louder and a bit more lyrical. When you listen to 'Ball and MJG, their experience in the game shows; the lyrics are polished and flows are silky smooth. The subject matter is proto-typically Southern: big-ballin, high-gloss flossin, sexin and money makin - but the difference is that they damn near INVENTED the genre from their neck of the woods. You might not hear much in the way of spiritual s**t other than the closers "It's All Real" and "Thank God" but Eightball and MJG have one quality that I personally find refreshing - gunplay is occasionally mentioned but they aren't obsessed with their tools or bragging and glorifying about everyone they shot. In fact, their attitude seems to be "We have better things to do like eat well, drink good, make love and raise our kids." That's real game - you don't have to brag about being unfu**kwittable, you just handle your own. If you're handling yours and you like REAL (pimp) TYTE Southern rap, then this is the album for you.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars from the Memphis duo.......2005-09-02

Off of Suave House, many thought they couldn't bring another tight album, but of the 6 group albums of their's I own this is my 2nd or 3rd favorite. They definitely show why they're one of the top 3 groups ever from the south (with UGK & Geto Boys). Of the 14 songs on here, 1 is a classic, the rest are listenable, most are good or great songs. Guests are minimal, rapping on only 2 songs and doing hooks on 3 so you get a good amount of the Memphis boyz. Production is great as well (other then maybe 2 songs) and like many said it sounds futureistic on some trax. MJG does 4 songs, Corey woodard & Jazze Pha each do 3, and DJ Quik & Swizz Beatz each do 2. A must have for their fans or for people who want to hear some real rappers from the south.

4 out of 5 stars Nifty lyrics, ultramodern instrumentals.......2003-01-15

With the likes of Outkast, Cash Money, and Nappy Roots getting the majority of southern hip-hop's air-play, the duo innovators better known as Eightball and MJG, seem to be having trouble getting the respect they surely deserve. Space Age 4 Eva is a true work of art minus a couple of tracks and should have been a platinum album. The only problem is, it isn't the year 2015 yet. Two incredible emcees incredibly ahead of their time.

3 out of 5 stars Space Age 4 Eva.......2001-09-25

As fans have noticed this latest release from Eightball and MJG is different from anything they have done in the past. A lot of people have said they are disappointed with "Space Age 4 Eva" but what they need to realize is that change is gonna come sooner or later, evolution y'all. Ya, the production is a lot different, some of the beats sound kinda strange at first but I have gotten used to this new sound and the record has grown on me. No, I don't think this is Eighball and MJG's best record but what I have noticed is that MJG has taken his syle to a whole new level. His lines on "Intro" blew me away, same with his closing lines on "Thingz", these rhymes make the whole record worth buying in my opinion, you at least gotta give it a listen, MJG for President! Overall the songs that I like the most on this record are "Intro", "I Know You", "Collard Greens", "Buck Bounce", "Pimp Hard", and "Always". I really like the music to "Always", its just so smooth and different from any other rap song I've heard, this is a tight track. I urge listeners to check this record out for its uniqueness. This was a ballsy move for Eightball and MJG and is an indicator that they are really trying to do something different. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Traditional Screw Job.......2004-01-06

The first reviewer below is obviously unfamiliar with the "screwed/chopped" style pioneered by Texas' DJ Screw (RIP). As the second reviewer noted, if you know what it is, you know what to expect, & this cd is a great example of what it is. Standout tracks include "Things" and "At The Club," & the entire album fits really well with the slowed-down and doubled-beat process which is what "screwed" versions basically are. Michael Watts just did David Banner's "Mississippi" album, which in my opinion is much better than the "regular" version. This is an excellent example of hip-hop's diversity and innovation -- check it out & you'll soon be hooked on the syrup-style.
