Biggie is back again--freestyling like only a dead man can on the intro to this second volume culled from the archives of NYC's Lyricist Lounge. You have to wonder why hip-hop can't let the man rest in peace? Must be something to do with the papers. Same could be said of this record's transparent attempt to keep a franchise alive and help push the Rawkus label further into mainstream consciousness. Aside from the aforementioned intro and Q-Tip's "live" outro, there's precious little evidence that the Lyricist Lounge is, in actuality, a freestyle forum with a monthly live event in New York City. The pairings of established and lesser MCs are suitably uninspired: Big Noyd and Prodigy's "The Grimy Way" and Royce Da 5'9"s "Let's Grow" even sound as if they're retreading 1980s retro-synth soundtracks. And, predictably, Mos Def (Rawkus's would-be prophet and biggest seller) is all over the record. He pairs up first with Ghostface Killah (on the previously released "Ms Fat Booty" remix), then with Pharoahe Monch and Nate Dogg (on "Oh No"), and cameos on the Gang Starr remix of Macy Gray's "I've Committed Murder." It seems that the only people that really get it are Last Emperor and RZA, whose resurrected creature-feature "He Lives" performs radical psychic surgery on this comp's rotting corpse. --Chris Campion

4 out of 5 stars Solid golden-era Rawkus release.......2007-06-25

I'm amazed only two other people have written a review of this album. I bought it a few months ago and I remember all the good times. Solid beats and rhymes. A nice collab with OC and Ras Kass, and some impressive cyphers with a vicious beat from Will I Am. A classic song in The Manifesto where Kweli breaks down the composition of the culture. 8.35/10 for a good B.

4 out of 5 stars This album holds it down!.......2006-03-10

One day about 6 years ago, I was listening to the local hip hop station, KS 107.5. After hearing Country Grammar, It Wasn't Me and Stan 5 times each that day, I stood up in my cubicle and said, to no one in particular, "This sucks!" A friend of mine walked over and asked me what I was talking about. I told him that I couldn't stand listening to the same old rap music over and over anymore. He handed me a two cd set, and told me to listen to it, and see if I didn't think that it was far better than what the radio was playing. That two CD set was this fantastic collection of underground hip hop, which served to introduce me to the artists that would come to be the standards for where I held hip hop to. The set has some great examples of lyricism from such luminaries as Mos Def, Jurassic 5, Talib Kweli, Q-Tip and Bahamadia, plus others who aren't as well known. The CD takes the form of a "live" open mic night, presided over by De La Soul, and their introductions, which are backed by the piano programming of 88 Keys, add to the feeling of the album. If you're interested in underground hip hop, this is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars FRESH.......2005-08-19

For any hip hop fan needing a fresh breath or air, take this LP and breath. Very clean from start to finish & each MC holds it down nicely. Highly Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars I'm confused about something.......2005-10-19

This is basically adding on to what Adrian said earlier. I have had this CD for years and never noticed this. The back of the CD is not named right. I do understand that there is that He Lives song by RZA and that is track 15, but on the back of the CD it says 15 is Dilated Peoples. The version I have has Still Here and He Lives, but does not have Right and Exact on it.

4 out of 5 stars Solid compilation album.......2005-08-06

A lot more known and accredited rappers are on this one and it makes for a better album from start to finish, but you still get some undergrown less known lyricits on it but not as many as Volume 1. Packed with 18 songs (1 is just a remix with a dfferent beat so it's 17 total songs), it has 2 classics, 1 almost classic, 4 I skip, 2 ok songs, and the others are good or great songs. Production is on point on most tracks as well, and a bunch of different producers get behiond the boards on this one. Hi Tek does 3 songs, Erick Sermon & ALChemist do 2 each, and Rcokwilder, DJ Roddy Rod, Ayatollah, DJ Roddy Rod, DJ Mighty Mi, Mad Lib, Prince Paul DJ Premier and Scott Storch all do 1. A good labum to have for fans of real hip hop and lyrics.

#8 - 8 (Saukrates & Redman)
#9 - 5 (talib Kweli & the always $h!++y Dead Prez)
#10 - 9 (M.O.P. & Kool G Rap - hardcore song w/ nice beat to go with it)

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Nice.......2005-06-01

I bought this album for one song, Oh No with Mos Def and Phraoh monche and ended up liking the majority of the album. My BIGGEST beef is the large number of empty tracks between 17 and 38...what the heck is that about? I'm really glad the album showcases some of the lesser known artists like Words(worth), Consquence and Menace, and Saukrates. My favorite beat is from the Alchemist on Right and Exact, the oriental sound is ON FIRE. Pick up this album is you have some extra cash and want some hot beats and a nice mix of artists

4 out of 5 stars underground trying to surface (don't worry we can see you).......2003-11-15

First of all i would like to point out there are two versions of this album. Nothing major, but the copy i own, has a track with big L & C-town (called Still Here) in the place of The Last emporer. Both tracks are worthy of the cd yet the big l is doper.

With that being said the album itself is bangin, some commercial heads are featured which is okay since we all got to make money, but this is dope hip hop and you should buy it, not only is it mad cheap used, the album is worth every cent of that four dollars.

4 out of 5 stars lyricist lounge.......2002-12-25

first of all i never heard the whole cd, i've just heard the sampler which is great. this is why i've gave it only 4 stars, i don't know that the rest of the songs are great, so i only gonna give you a review of the songs i've heard. "w.k.y.a." has a nice beat, "oh no..." is a great song, "makin' it blend" has a pretty commercial beat but it's listenable, "get that doe" is great, "sharp shooters" is nice, "the legendary street team(remix)" is better then the normal one. "he lives" has some great story-telling, "right & exact" is a pure dilated peoples song. i've also heard the remix of "i've commited murder" which is one of my favorite songs.

this is a pretty old compilation as of now, but i still listened to it last week. there are so many fantastic cats on this album. the first disc has body rock, one of my favorite rap songs of all time. tash, q-tip, mos def, its unbeatable. the freestyle track features thirstin howl and j-treds, and is wow, then you got wordsworth, punchline, and a lot of underground burners. the second disc is hosted by keith and menelik which is cool, but fewer strong tracks. cia is a stone cold classic, indelible mcs on track 12 is too good. get this when you get soundbombing 1

5 out of 5 stars Great job Rawkus.......2003-07-25

When i first listened to this cd i was blown away it has great beats and the lyrics are off the hook! Rawkus did a great job making this cd they bring in a mix of underground and mainstream musicians. With the classic Rawkus crew Mos Def and Talib Kweli and DJ Hi Tek as Reflection Eternal, Skillz and Pharoahe Monch. They also throw in a of the hook freestyle. But by far the song that i enjoyed the most was A.L. Lyrics on the second disc, i have never heard of him before and he just came out with some of the best lyrics i have ever heard he flows to the beat and he makes great ryhmes that blew me away i have been tryin yo find more from him but i cant find a thing he has to come up with something else. Overall i highly recommend this album, its another hit from Rawkus the number one record lable in my mind

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Dope.......2006-02-07

This is what live hip hop is all about. Stage and lyrics. No gimmics and no BS. Each emcee shines on every song all 18 tracks here on this CD (19-37 are just blanks).

Some of the stand out tracks was:

2) "Oh No" by Mos Def and Pharohe Monch with the vocals of Nate Dogg

4) "Get Up" by Coco Brovas/Smif-N-Wessun (Tek & Steele)

7) "Ms. Fat Booty 2" by Mos Def and Ghostface Killah- one of the dopest tracks on the CD

13) "Da Chipha"- Staight freestyles from Planet Asia, Phil Da Agony, Guilty and more

14) "Still Here" by Big L and C-Town- another dope track. Lets you know that real hip hop lives on by the example of this song

15) "Right and Exact" by Dialated Peoples- the first time I heard some production from The Alchemest

18/38) "Legendary Street Team" by Kool G. Rap and M.O.P.- I like the remix better than the origonal, but both are dope.

I recommend this to those hip hop heads that know what it means to rock the stage on the mic with lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Hip Hop at its finest.......2003-05-06

after hearing Vol. 1 I had to cop this album and I must say I was far from dissapointed. I know we all buy albums with a few good songs but all of these tracks won't dissapoint.
From Mos Def, Gangstarr, MOP w/ Kool G Rap, Redman, Dilated peoples (beat is intense) et cetera, et cetera, I think they dished out the best. Granted, not all tracks will top your radio charts, but Hip Hop Fans and freestyle lyricists like myself will not be dissapointed with the amazing beats and great lyrical flow, possibly some of the best these guys have dished out. I think the bar has been raised in terms of lyrics here reppin the lyricist lounge cause I haven't heard rhymes like this from these guys for a minute. Some of you may not recognize the talent here and you'll definitely be surprised.
Tracks 19-37 are essentially blank, possibly a recording error, but hang around for the remix of MOPs Legendary which'll be sure to shine light despite the new beat which is tight in a different light. Buy this, it won't dissapoint.

1 out of 5 stars Beware!.......2003-08-09

Rawkus records is known for putting out some classic albums, some Compilation albums titled "Lyricist Lounge." HOWEVER - I don't know if Rawkus is anyway affiliated with "BPMETRO" records, but regardless, this cd is terrible. I'll admit maybe one or two songs were all right, but not good enough for me to recommend. I assumed it was Rawkus by the 'Strikingly' similar logo. This may appeal to some, who have a taste for the more mainstream genre of rap, but the beats sound so cheap and generic I'd ...

4 out of 5 stars DJ Spinbad Came Off On This One.............2005-04-19

All folks need to purchase this CD. DJ Spinbad did a very good job. Hottest songs are: Skeme Team--Nuthin' You Can Do, Self Scientific--Return, Zion I--Boom Bip (with that hott backward track), Masta Ace--Acknowledge, LHM--We Will (member of Flipmode Squad) Tahir--Holiday (If you listen to the song, Truly Unique, one them sounds alot like Masta Ace.). Peace.

4 out of 5 stars pure underground goodness.......2002-10-09

Mixtapes tend to be a hit and miss thing/ You have some songs you don't like, but it's usually just snippets, so it's cool. Then you have songs you love, but the snippet factor makes it less appealing. The album starts rightfully with a DJ Spinbad intro, he is a good, underrated DJ. Then it goes into a Killa Priest song, I tend to usually not like him, but out of the WU people he is easily the best. This song is nice, the beat thumps and the lyrics are saying something. Next it goes into this cat HOM, who drops a 16 bar Lyricist Lounge Promo. All I can say is this kid is rediculiously sick on the mic. The track is butter without him, he kills it. I hadn't heard of HOM before this, but I will be checking for him indeed. Scheme Team blesses next, the track is above avarage, and Gean Gray sounds lovely as always. There are simply too many songs on here to break them all down. But it has a lot of definite stand outs, there are some snoozers, but what can you expect? "Rise & Shine" have one of the most buttery songs I've ever heard, too bad it's only a small portion. Mystic's track is incredible, it should have been on her album. Something I found interesting about this release,
it doesn't have too many of the super abstract emcees usually thought of when you think "underground" it's a nice collection of skilled cats. Some you probably never heard of, with 30 tracks you'll find something here you love, probably most of it (I know I did) Marc Ecko is known for having one of the freshest clothing lines ever, and since day one of Ecko Unlimited he has combined urban music to complement his urban cloths. A perfect blend. I can't wait for Underground Airplay version 2.0

5 out of 5 stars this is def. the stuff for my earzs.......2002-06-16

5 out of 5 stars The 'Bomb'.......2002-05-23

I live in England and found this c.d in a small record shop. This is without doubt the best Hip-Hop Album I have ever listened to,every tune is spot on, my favourites are the tracks by Mystic,Hieroglyphics and Moss-Def but they all rock...Big time. Every single tune is a party song so without question this is a must have for any Hip-Hop fan.

5 out of 5 stars One for the ages to come........2005-01-19

Hope my titles don't scare people off, especially for great songs done by the Mighty Mos. I heard this song when I got the Ecko Unlimited Lyricist Lounge cd. With lines like" a buck fifty but still swinging like a heavy weight," you have to purchase it. That line right there would have knocked Ali off of his verbal horse. And last but not least the beat. Man, I hate trying to break dance. I can beat box better than most, but breakdancing, ooohhh, that's not good. But I actually tried when I heard that beat. That's how ill it is. Pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars mos def kicking it new old school.......2003-02-10

this is simultaneously the best and funniest single I've heard in the past 12 months. Hearing Mos battle-rap himself is priceless. It sounds like mos had a lot of fun recording this single and it shows. This is my favorite single of the year and I've been bumping it non-stop since last week. It's good to see someone try to put out something different every once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars mos def kicks it new old school.......2003-02-09

This is simultaneously one of the best and one of the funniest singles I've heard all year. Funny in that it brings a smile to your face when you hear Mos battle-rap himself. You really have to hear it fully appreciate it. I think Mos definitely had a lot of fun making this record -- and it shows. My favorite single right now and I just heard it last night.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST SINCE SOUNDBOMBING II !!!!!!.......2002-01-23

MOS DEF is the best rapper of all time , and although some parts of this are slightly corny, it;s overall VERY GOOD!
