5 out of 5 stars Cash Money's premier album (4.5/5).......2007-04-23

By the time B.G. released his sixth solo album, 1999's "Chopper City in the Ghetto," he was an 18-year-old veteran of the rap game. This is in my opinion, the finest album of his career, and along with fellow hot boy Juvenile's classic 400 Degreez, is Cash Money Records' finest album. These two albums are the ones that put Cash Money into the mainstream, and made their flossy extravagance famous. And while their later releases would become redundant and overblown, it's easy to see why these late-90s discs made them household names. They're really so appealing. Listeners looking for sheer lyricism obviously wouldn't look here. Like the other Cash Money Millionaires, B.G. raps about cars, cash, clothes, and women, which at this point might not have been quite as typical as it sounds because of the way it was presented. The diamond crusted lettering on the covers are quite indicative of just how extravagant it is. But also like his labelmates, B.G. is interesting because he has a great, unique flow and delivers some clever lines. But the true joy in "Chopper City in the Ghetto" comes in the production. Mannie Fresh is really a genius behind the boards, and his consistency as a producer for such an overworked musician is incredible. During this era of Cash Money releases, he created a lovable sound of New Orleans bounce music that would be often imitated but never duplicated. His dense, upbeat rhythms covered in rolling bass and clever instrumentals are simply catchy. These are the kind of beats that will remain with you in your head for a while; Mannie Fresh was the true star of the Cash Money Millionaires. "Chopper City in the Ghetto" is devoid of the filler that would later come to characterize some Cash Money albums, and at 16 tracks it's one of New Orleans' most satisfying hip hop albums to date.

Following a typically enticing intro by the Big Tymers, the album kicks off with "Trigga Play," a great start. Over a standard bouncy Mannie Fresh beat, B.G. uses a low monotone flow for some hard lyrics. On the label's anthem "Cash Money Is an Army," he represents his clique over some more nice production. The Hot Boys all come together for "Play'n It Raw," which uses a variation of the excellent beat from Juvenile's "400 Degreez" chorus. "With the B.G." features Big Tymers, and B.G. entertains. "Made Man" has a very unique beat to it, upbeat and funky, with B.G.'s typical bragadagio. The most notable song is obviously the anthemic "Bling Bling," featuring Big Tymers and Hot Boys. This song is the one that coined the term in the title, and the flossiness and ridiculous extravagance of the Cash Money Millionaires is perhaps never displayed better than in this song, which has a great beat and hook. The bass-heavy "Knock Out" with Turk and Juve is a highlight, with some nice horn instrumentation. "Real N...." and "Dog A.." are probably the two weaker tracks on the album, but even they're okay. My two favorites follow. "Cash Money Roll" has an awesome, soulful beat, with a great feel to it. The thumping "N.... in Trouble" is also ingeniously produced. "Thug'n" is B.G. business as usual, and "Hard Times" might be a lyrical highlight. The bouncy "Uptown My Home" is very nice, and "'Bout My Paper" will have a familiar feel to Cash Money fans.

Although this was one of Cash Money's most successful albums from their commercial heyday, things went sour between B.G. and Cash Money, and as a final disrespect, this album went out of print. While it's still available, I highly recommend a purchase, because this is probably the finest single album from the storied label. Whenever the weather gets nice, I constantly find myself going back to albums like this. You could hate all you want, but there's no fronting on these beats if you ask me. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Uptown New Orleans.......2006-12-14

During the release of Chopper City In The Ghetto, B.G. was only eighteen years old with a six year career and his fifth solo album under his belt. "Trigga Play" leads the album off with the mellow style of gangster lyrics to be expected from B.G. Highlighted by the production of Mannie Fresh, "Cash Money Is An Army" must have been tailored specifically for him as he found each melody to accent his voice. Bringing his group, Hot Boys on "Play'n It Raw" without any hook or chorus, the four emcees / rappers flowed back to back as a link in a chain. "With Tha B.G." featuring Big Tymers is a more mainstream groove, but he kept it street and found his nitche to compliment the instrumental. Over a Spanish, exotic track the subject of "Made Man" featuring Big Tymers went well with their history to present day which would be "Bling Bling" featuring Big Tymers & Hot Boys. B.G. teamed up with Turk as they shared a verse and a half on "Knock Out" as Juvenile sang the hook. Taking it back to the essence of the streets, "Real N*gg*z" and "Thug'n" are on point with the LP's direction. "Dog *ss" featuring Juvenile is a memorable track as they speak about their sexual encounters with no remorse or shame. "...I ain't even gotta tell you..." said B.G. on "Cash Money Roll" as he spits about the signature ballin' of the entire label. The intro to "N*gg*z In Trouble" featuring Lil' Wayne & Juvenile began slow as the highlight is found with the three verses. He gives a little of himself and his obstacles on "Hard Times" that makes him the way he is. Representing different hoods of his hometown New Orleans on "Uptown My Home" takes the listener right on the block to see the graphic lyrics come to life in front of your eyes. Concluding the album with "'Bout My Paper" is the perfect closing for any Cash Money release. The production was completely held down by Mannie Fresh and there was no lack luster production on this project. Maybe a song or two from being a classic, but well worth the investment of a non'commercial release. Don't get it confused, the album cover is B. Gizzle not Master P.

4 out of 5 stars dont hate.......2006-07-11

look i like everything from classic wu tang to kool keith but you gotta look at the music as just being fun. this is not a masterpiece lyrically by any means (though bg throws a few nast hooks) but the beats are slamming and bg is the man

5 out of 5 stars Bout the feddi.......2006-01-11

This is THE most complete album by cash money. None of the stupid skits used by Lil Wayne. and Much better lyrics than that 37 year old Juvenile. To me, this cd is much better than 400 degreez. The beats are just much muhc better too.
I missed the whole Bling era craze. I just copped this cd 3 years ago.
B.G. is the voice of the south.

As the No Limit tank rolls ever onward, the burden of excellence increasingly falls upon Mystikal to provide compelling reason to listen to the label's output. While the other soldiers have let complacency stagnate their skills, Mystikal (along with Mia X) pushes on. Ghetto Fabulous picks up where Unpredictable left off: Mystikal spends his time embarrassing his No Limit peers (even Snoop!) and regaling the listener with even more well-constructed street sagas--all delivered with that unharnessed flow that is his trademark. Most appropriately, he pairs up with New York sound-alike Busta Rhymes for "Whacha Want, Whacha Need," a sonic gumbo laced with Caribbean spice. --Jon Caramanica

4 out of 5 stars Pretty dope album.......2006-11-18

The south don't have the best lyricist for me. But damn can they come up with some of the illest beats. This album got some dope beats. Mystical is one of my favorites though. You can feel his mic presence like he's right next to you. There is a few standout tracks. My favorties are Smell smoke and Ghetto fabulous. Lets go do it would be the best one to me. But Silk ruined that whole track for me. His flow was just too idiotic and he sounded like a second rate amatuer next to Snoop and Mystical. Still dope album.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!.......2006-07-01

Mystikal sounds good on every track. My fav tracks are there he go, and Im on fire.A must have for any rap fan.

5 out of 5 stars Dis Da Bomb.......2006-04-22

What I like most was when he chose Artist to be on his Album He Didn't choose the Same NO lIMIT people But he Chose Busta Rhymes. An I Got to Say Buy This Album!!!

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking Althusserian Obsequies.......2006-04-14

With this groundbreaking album, Mystikal's move from a structuralist account in which capital is understood to structure social relations in relatively homologous ways to a view of hegemony in which power relations are subject to repetition, convergence, and rearticulation brought the question of temporality into the thinking of structure, and marked a shift from a form of Althusserian theory that takes structural totalities as theoretical objects to one in which the insights into the contingent possibility of structure inaugurate a renewed conception of hegemony as bound up with the contingent sites and strategies of the rearticulation of power

4 out of 5 stars Something worth riding to.......2005-11-29

Mystikal delivers fantastic songs with this one. You have just got to love his vocals and lyrics he brings to the table. The album starts off well with it's intro and from there on out you stay hooked on it.

The only problem I had with it was, it can give you a headache. But be sure when your mad, just pop this in a walkmen and be on your way. :)

3 out of 5 stars The archetypical No Limit album...entertaining but inconsistent (3.5/5).......2006-12-08

Master P's 1997 album "Ghetto D" is the album that best represents Percy Miller and his entire No Limit empire that was so powerful in hip hop throughout the mid and late 90s. Like every album P and his label put out, it has a handful of great singles and album tracks that are dirty south hip hop at its finest, and it is completely overblown and oversized. The album is nearly 80 minutes long, so naturally as with any No Limit album there is a fair amount of filler to sift through. Guests appear on every song, and mostly they are the New Orleans homegrown No Limit Soldiers, consisting of his brothers C-Murder and Silkk the Shocker, Mia X, Mystikal, Fiend, Mr. Serv-On, Kane & Abel, Mo B. Dick, and O'Dell among others. The subject matter is what Master P gets most heat for, and it consists largely of hustling for money, cars and women, fat blunts, and ghetto prosperity. Production is provided by the Beats By the Pound crew, who did most No Limit production. Their beats are lovably cheap, often utilizing heavy beats and bass with dense horns and synths. Master P and No Limit were obviously not the most original rap crew, so some listeners disparage them for "biting" other rap artists' styles, especially on "Ghetto D." These accusations aren't unfounded, but I think they're fun to listen to anyway. For instance, "I Miss My Homies" is a great imitation of a song like 2Pac's "Life Goes On" or Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's "Tha Crossroads." "Ghetto D" certainly isn't perfect, but this album is the reason that No Limit blew up and most of the time it's not hard to see why.

This album begins with the title track, a song showcasing the brothers Miller rapping about making and selling crack over a beat jacked from a classic Eric B. & Rakim song. "Let's Get `Em" is vintage hardcore No Limit rap, meaning fans will absolutely love it and non-fans will not be able to stand it. The previously mentioned "I Miss My Homies" reminisces over lost friends and rappers in a way that many rappers did in '97, personally I like this track. "We Riders" is a threatening, gangster track that's a highlight to the album. As the title would indicate, "Throw `Em Up" follows the pattern set by the previous track and "Let's Get `Em." I love the song "Tryin' 2 Do Something," a deeper song about relationships with a great soul sample, this song is very well produced and has a great chorus, it's among my favorites on the album. "Plan B" is a humorous track with a funny chorus, but the beat isn't special. "Weed & Money" is a g-funk kind of track, you can guess pretty easily the subject content from the descriptive title. I don't really like "Captain Kirk," it's okay but not among the better songs on this album. "Stop Hatin'" is excellent, a great chorus sung in R&B fashion slams haters hard and the good raps accompany it, the electronic beat gives the track a deeper feel. "Eyes on Your Enemies" is forgettable and very similar to a handful of songs on the disc. "Make `Em Say Ugh" is the track that singlehandedly made P and No Limit household names, with its posse-cut feel, banging horn-laden beat, and signature call that had everyone yelling "Uuuuugggghhh" for years to come. At this point, the next few songs get kind of similar and generic for about the next twenty minutes, this is a point where I usually keep my finger on the skip button. The last track, however, is a classic and my favorite on the CD, "Burbons and Lacs." This song cleverly samples Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" to make a gorgeous laidback ode to the rich lifestyle of ghetto millionaires. I listen to this song over and over again, the chorus is awesome and the whole song is just really good.

Overall I recommend "Ghetto D" to fans of entertaining hip hop that's not necessarily lyrical. This was a very influential album and is pretty definitive of the late 90s southern hip hop boom in general. Anyone mildly interested in No Limit or Master P should definitely buy this album, it is the best and most representative of the man and the label. "Ghetto D" is obviously no lyrical masterpiece, but it's often fun. This album certainly has its flaws, but if you can overcome most of the filler there are definitely some good songs to be enjoyed.

4 out of 5 stars The Truth.......2006-01-23

I usually hate this type of rap, and grantid this is mad corny childish type stuff...
But can anyone argue with just how ill songs like "Pass the Green" and Boutit Boutit" are? Naw.

4 out of 5 stars the last great Master P album.......2005-11-26

okay so most who may not know, this is master p's 6th album and was releaseD during the pinnacle of his success. everything after this only seemed to get worse and worse.
now, Ghetto Dope is not his greatest album but is the curve of illusion in the music when he began to get rich and lazy. though its not as gangsta hardcore as 99WAYS TO DIE or ICE CREAM MAN, this is still a great gangster effort. it just becomes a little more hip hoppish and even more so filled with so many no limit guests that it takes away from the main focus of the album : MASTER P. i wanted to hear master p through out, but its really the beginning of a "no limit family" album that became standard musical release after this album was dropped.
it is a great album like i said, but was also the final appearance of anything that was ever as hardcore as master p was in his younger days.
on a final note: there is a shout out on the final track, "burbons and lacs" to the late dj screw from houston tx. if you have ever heard master p at his best, it was b/c dj screw chopped and screwed him up texas style. and i would have to say, "pass da green" is just UNREAL, SCREW STYLE!

1 out of 5 stars Crap.......2005-10-06

I don't like this album at all. I bought this CD with the hopes that it would be as good as "99 Ways to Die" or "Mr Ice Cream Man," but the beats on this CD suck, and Master P has no flow. I sold this CD a few days after I bought it. P went straight downhill after 1996.

5 out of 5 stars MASTER P'S MASTERPIECE.......2005-07-13

As Death Row Record's and Gangsta Rap were descending into Hip Hop History in the mid-late 90's following the death of 2Pac, Master P and his No Limit Record's became the lifeline for thugs in the ghettos of the south. Eventually spreading throughout America through constant MTV airing of GHETTO D's "I Miss My Homies" and "Make Em Say Ugh" and even becoming a haven for ex-Death Row West Coast supperstar and washed up Gangsta Rapper Snoop Dogg. Using the formula of remaking 80's Pop hits into rap songs pioneered by Puff Daddy (who's Bad Boy Record's was the other hot record lable of the mid-late 90's even after the death of Notorious B.I.G. with such acts as Mase, Lil' Kim, The Lox, 112 and himself), Master P added a thug element that sharply contrasted Puffy's flashy, baller hits. Master P used subject matter and at times the flow influenced by Scarface and 2Pac never varying from stories about life in the ghetto. But P told these stories convincingly even if lacking in creativity. The majority of the rappers on No Limit really couldn't rap any better than the average hustler on the corner making it seem as if you were really at a party in the projects of New Orleans and everyone was just taking turns freestyling. Silkk The Shocker, C-Murder, Mystikal, Snoop Dogg, Mia X, Kane and Abel, Mr. Serv-On, Fiend and pretty much every one else on the No Limit roster take turns passing the mic on just about every song on the album. Beats By The Pound create (or recreate 80's) beats that are laid back West Coast style but have that New Orleans' bass heavy bounce like on "Make Em Say Ugh" that later influenced Mannie Fresh of Cash Money and Lil' Jon. "Ghetto D" samples Eric B. and Rakim's "Eric B. Is President" only replacing "make 'em clap to this" with "make crack like this" and pulls it off really well introducing a new generation of rap fans to a classic beat ten years later. Other Southside ghetto classics like "Stop Hatin", "Gangstas Need Love" and "Burbons And Laces" make this a great CD that kept the Gangsta Rap genre on life support after Pac. While far from being a groundbreaking album, GHETTO D is the crown jewel for any fan of No Limit.

What can I say about Rasheeda? I've loved her ever since she first blew up with her group Da Kaperz. When Da Kaperz Vanished, I thought that was that, UNTIL I was in the store and I saw her debut solo album Dirty South, which I purchased without hesitation (and without hearing any songs off it!) And it was some heat! HER Sophmore effort A Ghetto Dream is little known because it is further underground. It is a collection of 17 tracks of CRUNK BUMP! No song on this CD is weak. Her lyrics are on fire! She is definitly a force to be reckoned with, a LOT of female rappers should take notes from this one right here....The only thing I wanna know is...WHEN IS HER NEW ALBUM GEORGIA PEACH DROPPIN'??? Cop Ghetto Dream, YOU WON'T be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars I like this one!.......2000-10-25

I dont know why but all the other sh.. that Short has put out on ShortRecords has been weak except Nationwide Volume I. His two albums are tight especially Cant Stay Away. But this album is sweet. Track 16 with the Up All Nite Crew is sweet. I think that alum will be dope. Check this album out. If you have not heard all the stuff on Shortrecords, if it doesnt say Nationwide dont get it unless you are a die hard Too $hort Fan.

5 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-05-12

This CD is good. I love it. I use to be a fan of Master P's when he first came out. This is the only CD of his I would purchase though.

2 out of 5 stars I only rated it low because of the actual product.......2007-04-03

I remember this when it came out back in the day. "Burbons and Lacs" is the perfect song for rollin' home late at night, and "Only Time Will Tell" is as thoughtful as it ever could be. But, sadly, my original CD got stolen, and I never found a replacement. So, I was incredibly eager when it was rereleased. I snapped that one up...this cd was as close to a soundtrack to my suburban white thug coming up as any cd could be. But, the rerelease cd was sadly inferior. I actually didn't play right in any cd player I tried it in, and skipped about every other track. I could see no flaws on the disk, but it still did it after I had it cleaned professionally. That's how much I love this cd...but it still was all messed up. Maybe I'm a rare case, but still, come on New No Limit. First, the 504 Boys, then this?

5 out of 5 stars Reppin' Nola!.......2006-01-05

Master P and the No Limit crew have put out countless albums, but Ghetto D a huge standout in my opinion. Typical No Limit lyrical content, talkin' bout life in the south...Good times, hard times, it's all here. The song most people know from this album, "Make Em' Say Ugh", is probably the least appealing song to me....So don't pass up the album just based on your opinion of that track. My fav's are "Ghetto D", "Pass Me Da Green", "I Miss My Homies" & "Captain Kirk". Peace

Like any good soldier, Master P's got stories to tell. Like a wounded, slightly delusional veteran, P tells tales that are redundant, preposterous, and just no fun to listen to. Ghetto Postage is his seventh solo album. More troublingly, it's the third since his promised retirement to focus on running his various business interests and improving his basketball game. What three years ago were novel sounds (thick, quick, brassy funk with a potent bass edge) and styles (Tupac-influenced wheezing and decidedly lumpy flows)--no longer carry much sonic weight. P seems aware of this, expanding into slightly new territory on the uninspired chick paean "My Babooski," and the way-too-conceited "'B' I Like," on which he boasts of his ability to steal women away from their men. After listening to Ghetto Postage, any self-respecting female wouldn't give P the time of day. He makes everything sound clunky. With his vocals murky like they were recorded over a pay phone, whatever distinct personality he has is skewered. The only moment of interest comes on the Snoop Dogg-featuring "Poppin' Them Collars," which, in true P fashion, bites the latest slang and claims it as his own. For P and No Limit, the freshest move possible is to hop on the next bandwagon, now that their own has long since been junked. --Jon Caramanica

3 out of 5 stars THE LAST DECENT ALBUM FROM MASTER P.......2004-01-15

THIS IS THE LAST DECENT ALBUM THAT MASTER P WILL PROBABLY EVER MAKE. AND ALSO, THIS IS THE LAST ALBUM IN WHICH P WOULD EVER KEEP IT REAL. AFTER THIS, P WOULD TOTALLY BEGIN TO GO COMMERCIAL AND HE WOULD TOTALLY ABANDON HIS STREET WAYS. ANYWAY, MASTER P WAS ABLE TO DELIVER SOME GOOD SONGS ON THIS CD, SUCH AS ''BOUT DAT'', ''POPPIN THEM COLLARS'', ''B***H I LIKE'', AND ''I DON'T GIVE A F**K''. NO LIMIT HAS BEEN DEAD SINCE SNOOP DOGG LEFT THEM BACK IN 2000. EVEN THOUGH THIS ALBUM IS OK, NO LIMIT IS OVER.

1 out of 5 stars This is da wost P cd ever.......2003-12-07

On dis cd P has just fell off. All of these tracks are soft and boring to hear Its like P just sold out and went mainstream. I want to hear more albums like only god can judge me, or more from TRU Hell anything is better than this. If p keeps makeing albums like this and gameface and continues to make lame rhymes with even worse Choruses than he wont have any more album sales from me, He needs to just retire and become a producer or help with his sons music (because god knows lil rome needs it) and stop making lame songs. Please dont buy this album save your money because this crap here aint worth a nickle.

3 out of 5 stars Master P isn't sounding good.......2003-09-27

This CD is ok. But, what ever happened to the Last Don days?? He should continue making music like that. Even though most of the Soldiers are gone, he could still make good quality rap music. No Limit is still the best though!!

4 out of 5 stars LIMITED........2003-08-24

After da last don ( HIS LAST SOLO ALBUM ??) He put out 3 more in the next 3 years - This being on level with the other 2 .... some good songs but nothing special.
IF YOU LIKE NO LIMIT THOUGH GET IT.

4 out of 5 stars Decatur, GA.......2005-07-28

Ghetto Mafia's third album, Straight From The Dec, is a display of Nino and Wicked's grind for nationwide success. The album's spotlight, "For The Good Times (Straight From The Dec)", with a blues sample and the Mafia stop and go flow is an instant eye opener. They also take a Jamican, Reggae-like approach with a heavy bassline on "Who Wanna Test". Hearing the name 'Wicked' being yelled out almost works as a gimmick. The duo tag team on a verse for the gangster funk "I Can Feel It" and could have been used throught the song. Straight From The Dec starts off with and maintains it's high expectations from the opener "In Da Paint". The Mafia talk about their hustling and struggles being in the 'trap' as done on "Fool I Got Ya " and many other subjects within this lp. Their lyrics are direct and simple with a southern slang that are strong enough to keep your attention.

5 out of 5 stars Straight from the Dec is too tight!.......2000-03-19

This album contains some of the phattest lyrics I have ever heard by Ghetto Mafia, it is also one of my favorites. I always said that nobody could stop Ghetto Mafia's Blues Rap combination and my point is proven with every album they bring out.

5 out of 5 stars Ghetto Mafia, Straeght From the Dec.......2000-03-09
