AMAZON!!!!...It would be really nice if I could atleast hear the damn tracks again, considering its been a long time since I heard the CD, especially if I'm gonna drop forty or fifty dollars on it.
Effective, hardcore gangsta rap.......2006-12-11
MC Ren's first full-length solo album following the breakup of NWA was his 1993 effort "Shock of the Hour," released on Ruthless Records. I am perplexed by how much this album is underappreciated. While obviously not on the same creative level of "The Chronic" or "Death Certificate," this is a very entertaining album and among the best to come from the post-NWA solo album offerings. This album is well executed, standard gangsta rap, and if it were not so overlooked, it might be one of the archetypical albums of the genre. MC Ren was always one of the most solid rappers in NWA, and his evident talent continues on this solo release. He covers much more interesting topics lyrically than Dre ever did, and even the run-of-the-mill gangsta rap fare is executed very well. The production is impressive, showing a very good style of the pre-g-funk west coast rap musical style. The beats and bass are hard, and there is usually a whiny synth or instrumental sample on most of the tracks. The beats just sound hard and really complement Ren's angry monotone. "Shock of the Hour" is really hard to find now, but it's still an album I highly recommend.
The album begins with "11:55," a dark and dangerous sounding intro that sets the mood for the album very well. "Same Old S..." speaks of a day in the life of a famous rapper, the production is solid and tough sounding. "F... What You Heard" is a highlight for me, the bass and synth-heavy music sounds really good with Ren's calmly delivered but angry raps. "All Bulls... Aside" continues in the same way, a threatening and well-produced song. "One False Move" has a chaotic sound both musically and lyrically. "You Wanna F... Her" speaks of a woman who is not as innocent as someone obviously believes, the beat is excellent. The album really picks up here, the music taking a more philosophical approach lyrically. "Mayday on the Front Line" is another warning kind of song but it just comes across as really well done. "Attack on Babylon" is one of the best songs on the album, discussing the thought process behind urban violence. "Do You Believe" is funky and challenges mainstream thought. Ren lends some time on the mic to his young proteges on "Mr. F... Up," and the album ends with by far its best track, the title song. This song paints an apocalyptic picture of black supremacy and judgment day, it's really disturbing and ends the album perfectly.
"Shock of the Hour" is a really underrated album from one of the west coast's pioneering and most interesting rap artists. MC Ren never gets the respect he deserves, but if more people heard this album they definitely would. This album is just overall a very solid and enjoyable album of hardcore west coast hip hop, one that I recommend to all fans of NWA and early west coast.
Great artist but contains to much rhetoric.......2006-08-05
Ren's style and talent, along with the other members, was crucial in making the absolutely phenomenal group that was NWA. His lyrical capacity is more impressive than Cube, Dre, and E. I can't be sure exactly what has filled him with such hatred but that hatred has surely affected the quality of his music, making otherwise great sounding tracks such as Attack on Babylon, and Shock of The Hour, sound more like rhetorical hype anthems rather than artistic expression. Although there are other tracks on the ablum that are not so, should I say, hate-founded, some damage has been done. In all fairness, if it weren't for Ren's admitted use of drugs, one might conclude that Osama Bin Laden had a copy of Shock of the Hour.
When???.......2006-07-09
When are they going to re-release this album?
While not as good as Kizz My.... it's still an excellent album.
There's a couple (if that) skippable tracks but not enough to take away a star.
Great album.
The lyrics, while quite explicit, all have meaning and the beats are jumping.
Worth the price of admission...
Music was so much better back in the day.
Sure, you have your good producers/artists like Timbaland, Kanye, Jay Z... but back in the day, there were so many good choices.
I can't believe some of the tracks 'hitting' today.
I would've thought this new stuff was crap back when this one was new.
Even Ice Cube turned for the worse, he used to be great, what happened?
MC REN is da best NWA Mc.......2005-07-21
He is..trust me..but Ice Cube came with some dope albums too..It's crazy this album is sellin for 44 or more...Get Ruthless Fo Life...his 4rth Lp..Thats even better...I wonder is he going to come out with another..Ice Cube is...peace

Seventh Vision Rocks.......2003-04-23
This cd totally kicks tushy!!! i highly reccomend it to anyone who wants a killer, hardcore, and loud metal band. The best song is definitely Crossover. one thing is for sure, these guys are radical christians. that's why I love them! I am a skateboarder who always listens to them while skating. But don't bother looking for this cd at a place like Sonshine or Best Buy. So if you are a skateboarder or even surfer that is a christian buy this cd. I am. Even if you are not a christian I am sure you will want to be one after listening to this. Buy it here on amazon.
PHAT GOOD TIMES MAD TIGHT RHYMES.......2000-09-17
THIS RECORD BE 2 SWEET!!!!It's way better than P.O.D. . Way more hardcore!!! Every song has this metal edge and is just banging! I have been listening to this cd for weeks now and it doesn't get old. It's phat that they're a Christian Band and they speak about what they believe. It's an awesome cd, but REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY hard to find. SO buy IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Shock of Tha Hour sounds more like a demo.......2000-01-16
I believe Seventh Vision deserves recognition for their effort at making a blistering rapcore album. After all, with so many bands producing music like this, it is hard to produce a powerhouse album. For the listener who has not experienced any rapcore before, this is a nice, raw album to start out with. My taste is more for a polished product though. And this is not a polished product. If you want a Christian rapcore album that rivals the hodgepodge of secular rapcore out there then I would suggest P.O.D.'s The Fundamental Elements of Southtown. I exchanged shock of tha hour for that and am a happy listener. I'm sure Seventh Vision will mature as they release more albums and in the future I look forward to giving a better review and hearing a better album.
Pick this one up if you can find it........1999-12-30
Awesome example of hip hop/hardcore. Every single song is hard, and there are no real low points on the album.Definately higher quality hard core than almost any other band Christian or secular. Excellent song writing also. Lyrics are positive and Christ centered throughout the disc. The only problem here is that Seventh Vision is signed with a fairly small record company and it will probably be very diffucult for you to find it since distrabution is so low.
one of the best secular or Christian.......1999-12-16
this cd is better than POD'S Fundamental Elements of Southtown, but not as good as POD'S Brown, what i like was they are definitely Christian's at the top of every song, the lead singer gives the verses that inspired him for the song,i know that non-Christian's will probably not buy this cd,that is most likely because they let other people influence their decisions, this band is better than Limp Bizkit,Korn,311,etc.....the cd is tough to find, but at least try to.

Shock of The Hour, by DEFFWISH.......2000-10-04
This CD is hot because it has original flavor. It keeps you hyped with phat beats and funky bass lines, while the lyrics keep your mind working. This is definitely a "bringing back the funk CD." Because it's the year 2000, a lot of people are wondering what this new century will bring. DEFFWISH gives a very clear view of what most conscious people are looking to take place. Yo. I'm not going to leave out the fact that the sista that's singing on this piece (Neka T.) is "REAL HOT." It's no doubt that we will hear from her on the solo tip real soon. Yo. Word. Believe dat!
