For early music people, this is another great compilation of stuff you just like to put on in the background while doing your daily routine. Good times.

LIKE A TRIP BACK IN TIME. FROM THE FIRST NOTES, I WAS TRANSPORTED.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting variety.......2006-03-28

One of the problems I have with many early music CDs is an emphasis on one place in a time period. This reissue manages to avoid that flaw by including minnesinger, troubador, trouvere, and instrumental pieces, though the liner notes could easily have told us which of the pieces were troubador, and which trouvere, instead of just the tantalizing "two are troubador (written in langue d'oc)" without identifying which.

As a sampler, it is excellent, though the vocal pieces tend to be somewhat slow--not all the lyrics seem consistent with that delivery, so this is probably an artist's choice. It would be interesting to hear the same pieces performed now, 30 years later, with 30 years of new scholarship. Ah well, nothing is perfect!

5 out of 5 stars A trip through history.......2005-09-29

The time of the Crusades spanned several centuries, from the time Pope Urban II called upon Christendom to fight for Jerusalem until the thirteenth century (this does not include the numerous minor, unnumbered crusades, sometimes against other Christians). The Crusades became for many in the Middle Ages a romantic ideal; the appeal for those who would join the Crusades was two-fold, both riches in this world and salvation in the next.

In this collection, the texts of the songs are primarily contemporary with the Crusades, although a few come from later troubadour and folk songs. Some songs here directly relate to the Crusades in content (for example, Pax in nomine Domini!), whereas others are songs contemporary with and popular among the Crusaders, but have no direct relation to the Crusades. 'Ja nus hons pris' is one such song, which has origins attributed to one of the most famous of the Crusaders, Richard the Lionhearted.

One of the problems with music from this time period is that very little written material exists. What music notation there is often is reminiscent of Gregorian chant - there are markers for pitch, but nothing for rhythmic values, melodies, etc. Similarly, the types of instruments are often not listed for particular songs, so it becomes educated guesswork as to the instruments used - lutes, rebec, wind instruments, percussion, etc.

The performances here are wonderful and full. The Early Music Consort of London recorded this first for vinyl in 1970; this CD is a reissue, well engineered. David Munrow was the director as well as performer on recorder, fluet, shawm, crumhorn and bagpipes. Munrow's talents are well suited to this kind of medieval music. Among the other performers are soprano Christina Clarke, counter tenors James Bowman and Charles Brett, tenor Nigel Rogers and baritone Geoffrey Shaw. Musicians include Eleanor Sloan on treble rebec, Oliver Brookes on bass rebec, James Tyler on lute and citole, Gillian Reid on the bells, Christopher Hogwood on harp, organ, nakers and tabor, and James Blades on nakers and tabor.

This recording is superb, a great addition to an early music library, and a joy to have as a CD - I had the vinyl of this, but over time it warped in storage, and I was very sad to have lost such a brilliant collection of music. Here it is again, restored and full of power and life.

2 out of 5 stars Overrated.......2005-03-03

Note that I am a harsh reviewer, especially for music... but there are a lot of problems with this CD and there are better other there.

It is certainly interesting music and it does have historical value, but it is by no means unique.

Here are my criticisms:

1)
All of the 19 tracks are short. They range from 1-4 minutes with an average of around 2 1/2 minutes per track.

2)
This wouldn't be all that bad, except that none of those 19 tracks really stood out. They are all slow-paced and generic with little feeling of variety. Essentially, despite being a fan of the genre, I just couldn't get 'into' any of the music. It was not at all inspiring.

3)
One of my favorite things about medieval/renaissance music is the excellent balance and combination of voice talent and instruments.
This CD did not come through at all in that area, however.
The majority of this CD was the mellow, slow-paced singing that many people associate with the genre.
However, whenever the singers got going, the relatively few instruments all disappeared entirely, leaving you with just the singers (who weren't powerful enough to carry the show alone).

If you are a fan of the genre, then you might want to add this to your collection just because it isn't very expensive.

However, if you are merely interested in trying out the archaic music genre, then I defintely would recommend:
"Sinners & Saints - The Ultimate Medieval and Renaissance Music Collection"
*instead* of this one.
I gave Sinners & Saints a 5/5 - It was the CD that this one should've been.

I love this cd--all the tracks are great, especially "On the way to Bethlehem"!

5 out of 5 stars Exotic, exciting and fun!.......2002-11-29

If Ensemble Unicorn is great, Unicorn combined with the Middle-Eastern-inspired Ensemble Oni Wytars is even better! Actually, the two groups seem to share many of the same members, along with Ensemble Accentus (which focuses on Spanish and Sephardic music), but with different directors for each: Michael Posch for Unicorn, Marcos Ambrosini for Oni Wytars, and Thomas Wimmer for Accentus. This CD brings the musicians together to offer a stimulating combination of western and eastern-influenced music that might have been heard or played by medieval Pilgrims making the journey eastward. The European tunes focus on the Christmas season, while the Balkan and Near Eastern selections are traditional, handed down orally through the centuries and interpreted here with a zeal that should be as appealing to belly dancers as to early music enthusiasts (and I know many people who fall into both categories!). Instruments used include chalumeau, cheremia, cornemuse bechonnet, darbukka, davul, def, gayda, gittern, kaval, nyckelharpa, sackpipa, tamburello, tombak, vihuela d'arco, and a number of others that you actually might have heard of before--bagpipe, rebec, recorder, rebec, shawm, ud and the like. Ellen Santaniello also contributes vocals. I was surprised and delighted when I played this CD for the first time, and I continue to be each time I hear it again. If you like this recording, be sure to check out the other collaboration between Ensemble Unicorn and Ensemble Oni Wytars, "Music of the Troubadours", also from Naxos.

5 out of 5 stars Exotic jams.......2001-02-27

Yes, fortunately, this record does not contain anything you'd recognise as depressing Xmas kitsch.

Instead, the record wishes to envisage a journey of mediæval pilgrims, beginning in Western Europe, and moving through the Balkans towards the Holy Land. As such, the disk contains a mixture of Western European, Balkan, and Islamic melodies.

The strength of Ensemble Unicorn and Oni Wytars is their ability to use early music as the basis for extended jam sessions. This recording is framed by two such jams, each more than twelve minutes in length, the opening -Dinaresade- and the closing -Mevlana-. Based on Middle Eastern themes, these are excellent performances, rich in atmosphere. Fans of contemporary groups who make use of similar material, from Loreena McKennitt to Dead can Dance, may find this record interesting, and well worth the Naxos price.

FWIW, Ensemble Unicorn and Oni Wytars also collaborate on the -Black Madonna- recording, another Naxos release I can highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars I WANT MORE!.......1999-06-08

Great melodies, better instrumentation....INCREDIBLE MUSIC!!! I find western-europe music by ensemble Unicorn great, but the oriental part by Oni Wytars is simply amazing, both the balkanic and oriental songs. My only regret is that I loved the ensemble too much to bear the fact that no other record by them is anywhere to be found...

5 out of 5 stars Too cool to be considered classical and definitely not Xmas........1999-01-12

Despite the title this album has nothing to do with Christmas music. The sounds range from Celtic to Middle Eastern. While they date from the days of the Crusades, they sound great to my ears in the nineties. The last track makes you want to belly dance!

    5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous! .......2006-02-18

I highly recommend this recording! I heard Field's work for the first time not long ago and wanted to get my own recording. I had to pay a pretty penny for this collection (via Marketplace) but it was worth every cent!

What a great composer and what a great job Micael O'Rourke has done, as well!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2005-12-17

Chopin made the nocturne famous, but Field invented the form. Field's nocturnes, composed between 1812 and 1832, are rather less intense and less complex than Chopin's, but perfectly lovely, and beautifully performed here by pianist O'Rourke. When I feel too frazzled for almost anything but silence, these pieces soothe and solace.

    5 out of 5 stars Delectable!.......2000-07-16

John Field is probably one of the most under-rated composers . Most classical music afficianados swoon over Chopin's nocturnes (justifiably so) , but I am surprised by the number of people who have never even heard of Field !Unlike Chopin , John Field does not wear his heart on his sleeve in these nocturnes , but to my mind they are far more superior .They are delicate & delectable without being maudlin (unlike Chopin)...listening to these nocturnes at night is like watching snowflakes fall on an arctic lake in the comfort of a heated cabin !If you like Chopin's nocturnes , you'll love these hidden gems !

John O'Conor cannot be faulted in this recording of John Field. He manages to give it that Chopin-nocturne-feel but show the originality and musicality required when approaching John Field's music. An excellent recording with technical brilliance and poetic musicality.

5 out of 5 stars another excellent Field performance by O'Conor.......2003-07-18

John O'Conor is a gifted Irish pianist. This disc is a beautifully recorded performance of Field's piano sonatas on a Hamburg Steinway Piano. O'Conor's recording of Field's Nocturnes (also on Telarc) have been highly praised. This disc makes and excellent companion to that recording and includes the three Nocturnes which they were unable to fit on the other disc. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Nice!.......2000-07-03

A natural regression for any lover of Chopin would seem to be to the music of John Field - specifically the nocturnes. However, this is no downward step. Field's nocturnes may seem a little simple in comparison with Chopin's, but on the first hearing this music gently pulls you away into wonderful landscapes and emotions. It would be natural to assume that in his later years John Field may have felt left behind, overshadowed by the success of Chopin, Mendelssohn, List, Schubert etc. - listening to his nocturnes, there is no hint of any such sentiment. In fact, Field's music very often reaches perfection, saying all it needs to say, with apparent simplicity; a guise which belies delicate subtleties, allowed only to penetrate one's soul through secret levels of consciousness known only to the composer himself.

Essentially, this is pure nocturne format: beautiful right-hand melodies over left-hand figuration. The harmony is classical, yet retains an originality leaving the music still fresh after around 200 years. While some of the nocturnes give insight into where a few of Chopin's ideas may have budded, Field's works are as Fieldesque as Chopin's are Chopinesque. But, equally, it requires a real talent to sing the melodies which often burst out in a flowering reminiscent of the "bel canto" style in the great Italian operas of the time. Pietro Spada displays a real gift in both technique and musicality, allowing Field's ideas to spring forth and invite us to meditate upon their charming wisdom. Each note is crisp and his expression is tasteful, retaining that apathetic air so present in all of Field's compositions - it's music that exists because it must exist, somehow more a part of nature or the cosmos than of humanity. Essentially, I believe Spada aimed to allow us to forget the player, the composer, and simply experience the music itself - unless this was Field's original aim and it just comes through the playing. Either way, this is simply fantastic music presented extremely well by Pietro Spada. Not all the nocturnes are on this volume though: others appear on the volume after this one along with several other compositions. However, all of Field's music is worth spending time with, though I would recommend starting with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Explorations in the early Middle Ages.......2006-01-17

This is a wonderful and enligthening CD. The excellent French group Ensemble Gilles Binchois explore a very important moment in European music history: the emergence of polyphony. The so-called Ars Nova marks a radical departure from the monody of the gregorian chant. Arguably, polyphony is the cornerstone of European music. Even modern composers such as Nono, Berio and Boulez continue to be deeply influenced by the Ars Nova.
This record provides early examples of polyphony in France, showing examples of the transition to the monody to one, two and then many simultaneous voices. Dominique Vellard, conductor of the ensemble, is a scholar-performer in medieval music, and works at the Center for Medieval Music in Paris. The performance and recordings are first-rate. If you care about medieval music, this record is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars "Let the dance continue!".......2002-11-28

More 14th century Italian dances from New York's Ensemble for Early Music, along with a generous helping of 13th century French and English dances. Director Frederick Renz and his ensemble do a great job of interpreting the ubiquitous ductias and estampies with the same verve and sensitivity as they did on their previous, exclusively Italian recording. Such varied instruments as bagpipe, ciaramella, shawm, gemshorn, recorder, pipe, flute, bagpipe, organistrum, lute, vielle, rebec, harp, hammered dulcimer, psaltery, string drum, dumbec, frame drum, Jew's harp and tambourine are used (and, as on the first CD, are conveniently pictured on the insert for those wondering what they all look like!). Guest percussionist Glen Velez returns to again add color and flare with his complex rhythms. Be sure to also check out "Istanpitta: A Medieval Dance Band", the companion CD released by this same group in 1995. Both are great fun!

      5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2001-12-17

A great selection of medieval dances that I think will appeal to all tastes. The Istanpitta series (one & two) from the New York Early Music Guild is in my opinion the best presentation of medieval music, it's gorgeous. This second cd is my favorite.

The first 14 tracks are 13th century French & English dances. With number one (La Quinte Estampie Real) the cd really takes off with flair, a brisk tune with wailing shawms (a wind intrument related to the oboe) chanting reedpipes, and wonderful pounding percussion with nakers and tabors. Number two (La Tierche Estampie Roial) in contrast is a slow and etheral tune, that's absolutely exquisite!

The last four tracks are 14th Century Italian dances which really sound different from the rest. Two are played solo on the Clavicytherium (another name for an upright spinet)

The way the music is played by the New York's Ensemble For Music is wonderful; they are truly masters. I got this cd first, then Istanpitta (the first one) The first one has fewer tracks than this one, but it's still great.

NY's Ensemble for Early music has created these 2 gems; of simply the best presentation of medieval music I've heard.

Get the cds; I don't think you'll be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Something distant and beautiful.......2001-08-29

The music on this disc and the first disc comes from about seven hundred years ago. I like this second volume just slightly more than the original Istanpitta, because the selections flow well together. The harmonies of the wind instruments, the uncommonly beautiful character of the lutes and strings, and the excellent percussion playing all create a rich musical atmosphere into which you can delve from start to finish. You will be transported. You may even find yourself traveling to a Renaissance festival with this music as part of the musical accompaniment for your journey.
