"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

This single was pretty good. I ordered it off the site for the used/new price of $0.69 and it is a lovely single. I already have Holler/Let Love Lead the Way on the "Forever" CD, but two things I loved about this single:

1) Cover Art
2) The Holler Remix

The cover is so IN YO FACE and out there that it's amazing. I love it.

SONGS:

HOLLER [Radio Edit] - [A] - This song mostly fits under Melanie B's personality and I'm sure she headed the track as far as the spices were writing. The beat seems familiar [and therefore, old], but it's a good beat. Go spice. The harmony is right on.

LET LOVE LEAD THE WAY [Radio Edit] - [A+] - This song is the 2nd best Spice Girls song of all time. Next to Stop, it's amazing. It's set in a melancholy storybook fantasy mood and the pop is perfect. You gotta love it. I think this song is more afflicting to Emma's personality, though Melanie C seems to have the biggest handle on vocals. It's a great song. Yay.

HOLLER [MAW REMIX] - [A-] - The beat in the beginning is danceable and you have to move when you hear it. But then the vocals kick in [these are my favorite kind of remixes like the morales remix of "stop", the sleaze sisters anthem mix of geri's "scream if you wanna go faster", and the almighty mix of emma's "maybe"]. It's pretty cool.

HOLLER [VIDEO] - [A+] - Pure awesomeness. The magical pyramid is a great image to put the new face of the Spice Girls in. Victoria's hair is awesome too and Emma just looks dead sexy.

It's A Shame This Never Made It Far In America.......2005-03-06

With one of the best beats by a pop quartet and a definite new sound for the girls, this song could have broken the mold of typical pop that was being showcased at the time in America.

If their Forever CD hadn't flopped and they had waited just a few months later, this song would have brought them to the forefront and garner them a new kind of respect by music fans out there, esp. the R&B group.

Despite this being an underground hit, it is one of their best, and the video only proves to make it better. If you like Darkchild or flawless production skills, then look no further.

Put this on in a club or party and you will soon have a few more spice fans to reclaim.

HOLLER!!!!!!!!.......2003-10-30

I just got this single today! On its release, it was the first from the insanely popular Spice Girls in years! In the U.K., it became a #1 single, but in the U.S., it barely made a ripple on the charts. It was a totally different sound for the girls, R&B rather than Pop. Personally, I think the song is awesome! The next song included on the single is "Let Love Lead The Way." This song followed a similar path to "Holler." It reached #1 (as many of the Spices' singles have), but didn't catch on in the U.S. The song is a pretty decent attempt at a slow song. The next song, the MAW Remix of "Holler," is your typical remix, but it still is pretty rockin'. I like it a lot. I recommend this single highly! The songs are great! Enjoy!!!!!

Holla holla! The girls are back again! Holler is by far the best song i've heard by them since "Say you'll be there" The video is pretty hott too! This mix of pop and hip hop beat makes it an awesome song! The cd is sooo boss! U go girls! Also the fact that the song was produced by Darkchild makes it soooo awesome. I love Holler!...

Typical R&B, But Spice Girls @ Their Best..........2002-03-12

When I first heard this song Last year I was Astounded to hear that it was by the Spicegirls. I was expecting some new R&B Girl group like Dream or Destiny's Child...but WOW! Melanie C shows off her vocals in this one, which is a good thing. This Rodney Jenkins-produced (Also worked with famed Songstress and Actredss, Brandy) song Quickly became a Hit on the Pop charts last year but unfortunatly because of it's lack of Pop "Quality" didn't get past acts such as *N Sync, Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears. I think it is their most mature work to date and though they're settling down and starting solo careers. This was the Only single released in the US except for Goodbye which is fun as well, from their Third and (For now) Final Album, "Forever." Everytime I heard this song in the Car I cranked up the Volume to it's peak. I first heard and saw this song on MTV's Total Request Live and it was Great! I was always a Fan of the Spicegirls, and though this was not what I was expecting from them, it Grow on me and now I love it. Check this song out!

Great, obscure old Berlin!.......2002-08-07

As a cast member on this album, I'm a little bit biased, but it's this is really a chance to get a listen to some really fabulous Berlin. This is Berlin's first Broadway show and has some great gems like "Have the Boys Around Me" and a bunch of great catchy tunes. It's a wide mix of Berlin and if you're a big fan, it's a great chance to hear him in still somewhat developmental stages. A couple songs from this show were later re-worked and put into other shows. It's also has a great feel for the period and shows the influences around the time he was writing: opera (Opera Melody), cowboys (I Gotta Go Back to Texas) and Hawaii (Honolulu Girls). It's a keeper!

Also on this CD is a great tribute to Berlin's counterpoint tunes. It's a mix of all three of the greats: Simple Melody, Old Fashioned Wedding, and Just in Love. Sung individually and then all three together! You won't get that anywhere else.

At last the Spice Girls have come back with a sog that isnt pop. Holler is an excellent song that will hopefully get them a legion of new fans.The flip side of this song is one that will keep the fans happy and that is Let Love Lead The way, which is a slightly up market pop song. Lets hope the rumours of a split are not true and they continue to release more good songs from their album "Forever"

I bought this CD and I really liked it a lot. It's not like your typical cd single, this one is better. First of all there are three songs included,Let love lead the way, a ballad in which the girls sound amazing eventhough some lyrics are dumb, but nevermind, the harmonies are flawless and the music is soothing, Holler which is an infectious RnB number, catchy and danceable, you might not like it at first but it's a grower! and the third one is a Tribal Vocal Mix of Holler which is great! Great instruments and cool effects on the voices, perfect for a party if you think Holler is slow! Also If you insert the cd in your computer youll see Let love lead the way video, a picture gallery and 4 mini videos of the making of LLTW, ALSO there are 4 postcards of each girl all this in a cool cardboard box. Definetely worth your money!

this was a beautiful comeback by the Spice Girls.Not only are both the songs fantastic but their voices have improved as well. Holler is a great song that makes you want to sing along with it and Let Love Lead the Way is a great ballad that just sounds fantastic and sort of makes you want to cry because it's so beautiful.Welcome back girls and may you have as much success as in 96-98!!!Spice Girls Rule!!!!!!!!!!

The Spice Girls can't sing worth a darn. I've seen other Anti-Spice music lovers call them Nasty Spice, Rancid Spice, Rotten Spice, Stinky Spice and Stupid Spice. Nasty has dropped out (or was kicked out) and now Rancid, Rotten, Stinky and Stupid have come up with this lousy junk. You know how cats sound when they screech? Better than the Spice Girls! "Holler" should be flushed away and "Let Love Lead the Way" is horrendous. I wish the Spice Girls would move out of the way and let REAL talent sing! They can't act, play instruments or sing. They stink.

Excellent Comeback by the Spices!.......2000-11-28

This is a real different thing from their previous singles. Holler has a real R&B feel to it but not forgetting their pop side. Let Love Lead The Way is an all-around beautiful song. But I'm disappointed that Forever didn't even make the Billboard Top 10. I guess their American fans don't like them as much as they used to anymore. Maybe the S.G. went away too long and people eventually get sick of waiting.
