4 out of 5 stars I listen often as I may.......2007-05-27

As mentioned in my review of the Great Society's "Born To Be Burned" CD, I had the pleasure of interviewing 3 of the members of the band for my Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent." I have been a fan for numerous years and always wish this group had better promotion.

If you want the music because you enjoy the Airplane and Grace, that is fine. What will happen is a quick discovery the sounds of the Great Society will stand on their own. The release gives you the 2 posthumously issued live albums.

To borrow a phase from Jim Morrison the band could change the mood from glad to sadness. The haunting sounds of Darkly Smiling and Grimly Forming are captivating. Their version of Sally Go `Round The Roses is considered by many to be the definitive.

Climb aboard the plane and head back to the city by the bay 1966. The sights are magnificent and the rock and roll is terrific.

Be well always,
Craig Fenton

4 out of 5 stars Grace Slick - 'Collector's Item' (Sony).......2007-03-02

A well assembled seventeen track compilation of Grace Slick's work. Some Jefferson Airplane tunes here as well as songs from her pre-Airplane one-lp band, Great Society. See my review of their 'Born To Be Burned' CD. Most enjoyable cuts are the rocking "Sally Go 'Round The Roses", "Outlaw Blues", "Daydream Nightmare" and the 'original' edits for "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit", which sound a bit more folk-ish but still great. A nice little rarity for long time Airplane fans, fanatics and die-hard collectors. A definite should-have.

5 out of 5 stars Ecellent if you love acid rock.......2007-01-19

This is one of my favorite albums with a fabulous recording of white rabit, not to mention someone to love and saly go round the roses...if you love grace slick's voice you will love this

5 out of 5 stars Just my thoughts...........2006-08-24

Grace Slick & the Great Society, a band that deserves a lot more credit than people, Grace included, give it. I found this band completly on accident and... I must say, it was the best mistake I ever made.

I am a fan of Jefferson Airplane, and though, I agree that this band is not as sophicticated as Jefferson Airplane, it is, indeed an important one. After listening, it was clear to see that Jefferson Airplane might not have been what they were without this band. It was deffenatly an experiment, but one that pushed boundaries, something that not too many are brave enough to do. The songs are edgy for it's time and obvioiusly a building block for Grace Slick's later greatness.

This group litterly became one of my favourites over night. It puts me in an indescribable mood that I have yet to feel from any other musical group. Yes, to most they sound mildly amiturish, but, it's their unknowingness and ability to experiment and improvise that truely makes them great. It's basically a must have for anyone who is a serious fan of the '60's San Fransciso musical scene.

5 out of 5 stars "Don't quit your day jobs...uh, all except you, Miss Slick.".......2006-06-07

When I was a kid back in the tumultuous Sixties only audiophiles could afford decent sound equipment. The rest of us were reduced to putting the microphones of our cassette recorders up against the speakers of our AM radios if we wanted to record our favorite songs. The resulting tapes always sounded like they'd been recorded in a storm drain, but there was an authenticity to those crummy recordings that no amount of high-tech can ever match. We LOVED those songs, we WANTED those songs, and by God we were gonna HAVE those songs.

Listening to these early Great Society recordings gives me the same feeling. The Great Society has acheived a near-mythic status as the proto-Jefferson Airplane in the collective memory of the San Francisco-Flowers-In-Your-Hair veterans brigade. It is hard to admit that The Great Society was "such a half-assed band," as Grace Slick described it. It's a certainty that there are scores of dusty reel-to-reels of better and more deserving unknown bands of that era hidden in broom closets throughout America.

But The Great Society had two things going for it that no other Frisco bar band of the era could match, those being a repetiore of good songs (and not just "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit" either), and Grace Slick. The raw musicianship of The Great Society puts you in mind of your college roommate who played Bob Dylan tunes all day on his $75 beach guitar. Like him, at least they tried really hard to sound like something. Still, they are utter tyros. Their sincerity is wonderful, and their ability to sample varied phrases from others' songs is effective, but it doesn't make them at all "innovative" or "the first psychedelic band of the era" as other reviewers would have it. If they had been they would have had their own fifteen minutes of fame and not been a mere footnote to the Airplane. Darby Slick, the band's second most talented musician/composer, vanished from the commercial music scene to reemerge years later after studying music in India. Tentative though sloppy elements of Indian ragas do pepper The Great Society's songs, predating even George Harrison's experiments with The Beatles, but they are the attempts of a dedicated amateur. In the intervening decades Darby developed his talent, and did invent "the Slick," a unique type of fretless guitar. As a matter of fact, Jerry, Darby and Grace Slick were inspired to form the band only after seeing the Jefferson Airplane perform live at the Matrix where the tapes that make up this disc were recorded. The Airplane essentially created and then discovered them. Shortly thereafter, the Airplane shanghaied Grace. Yes, imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but that doesn't mean your favorite band won't steal your lead singer.

Grace both overwhelms and uplifts her woefully untalented bandmates. Her singing is like a blast of raw power that completely swamps the reedy background notes of The Great Society. Amazingly, that voice alone manages to move The Great Society from their garage to your cousin's wedding. It is also, before years of alcohol, cigarettes, drug abuse, and overuse, clear as a bell, smoother than milk, and mesmerizingly erotic. Hearing Grace on this disc left no question as to why the Airplane had to have her.

The songs themselves are certainly deserving of some serious attention, whether covers or originals, both in choice or composition. "Sally Go Round The Roses" has a disturbing and hypnotic undertone. "Father Bruce" is a topical pop-rocker celebrating the immortal Lenny. Grace's cover of "Nature Boy" shows she can easily handle a true standard even with truly substandard backing. And of course, "Somebody To Love" (written by Darby) and "White Rabbit" (written by Grace) became the best-known Summer of Love classics. "Somebody To Love" sounds less dynamic in the hands of The Great Society, but the original "White Rabbit" has a less structured, more improvisational, and trippier feel to it than the Airplane's version. However, just because they are the original versions doesn't mean that they are necessarily "better" versions; but they are different. Given what the Airplane did with them, it would be interesting to see what another band might do with the rest of The Great Society's playlist.

THE GREAT SOCIETY is a curio recording, but one that's indispensable if you want to feel the experience of the earliest days of Acid Rock; and well worth it if you want to experience Grace Slick at her purest.

I laughed from start to finish. It made me think. Get misty. Sandra is at her very best. She has grown up, smoothed out, and knows her audience better than any performance artist/comedian around. Her pulse on politics and the icons of pop culture make her ripe for a talk show--tomorrow! I play it for just about every friend that stops by, and listen to it on my ipod when days get dreary. Brava!!!

5 out of 5 stars A must have! Plus it's a collector's item!.......2007-02-12

Sandra Bernhard is unstoppable! There are very few Live albums that can do justice to the perfomance, but "Everything Bad & Beautiful" is one of the best I've heard! Every track packs a punch. Take Sandra's cover of Missy Elliott's "Pussycat" for example, it rocks, enough for you to want to blast it. Along with lots of other great song selections and Sandra's famous take on society, it is Sandra after all! Not to be missed, and it's going out of print, prices will rise!

5 out of 5 stars She's Everything Bad & Beautiful.......2006-11-27

I just want to say I bought this album from Sandra's website, it's her newest release from a new record company. Sandra's still got it, she is absolutely hilarious. Sandra makes fun of everybody from The Bushs, to Julia Roberts on Broadway. Telling storys of how Bob Dylan broke up her family as a child, all while singing songs in between with her high energy voice, not to mention she still makes fun of Mariah Carey, hilarious. It's a great live album that will have you playing it over and over, and your stomach will be hurting so much from laughing. also the all girl band on this album are amazing. A must have for Sandra Bernhard fans!.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Singer.......2007-03-08

Having heard "I Dreamed" on Bob Moke's XM "Moments to Remember", we re-discovered what a fabulous songtress Betty Johnson is. It's a breath of "fresh air" to hear the supreme clarity and warm deliveries that she brings to these forgotten (by us) standards. We have to have Volume II; and more. /s/ S. & C. H. - Atlanta

5 out of 5 stars Betty's Hits - Vol. 1.......2007-01-14

I've been looking for a disc that had Betty Johnson's hits for a long time. Amazon was the first site that was able to deliver. I'm thrilled.

3 out of 5 stars Half & Half.......2006-02-01

As an oldies station programmer I sought out this CD because of the rarity of the tracks, a good handful of '50s hits. Insert is 4 panel insert with little info, and you would be hard pressed to track down all of these tunes. Downside is that these are off vinyl, fair quality, and indeed "Dream" is not on this as listed. Nonetheless, these are hard to find tracks on a decent collection that probably will not appear elsewhere off masters.

5 out of 5 stars Found a lost treasure.......2005-09-09

As a Radio Dee-Jay for over 48 years, I was putting together a radio program and was missing a tune called "I DREAMED" from 1956. I found it on Amazon.com and bought it. I played the CD as I was writing up my show and have forgotten just how good this lady really was, because I remembered several of the other tunes on it. There was a phone number on the CD to order others.

When I called, I explained the above and got a big "Thank You". It was none other than Betty Johnson, herself. I asked if she would like to do an hour show and she agreed. I am pleased with all of her recordings and am sure my listeners will be, also. There is not a bad song in the lot.. Thanks Betty.

Bought this specifically for the song "Dream". If you are looking for this tune, do not buy this CD because even though it
is listed on the tray card as track #14; it ain't there, folks. Some other song is in it's place. Other than that this is not
a bad Cd. "Dream" Can be found on "Betty's Hits - Vol. 2"

This album is aptly titled. There is such a wide array of music on this CD that it is a must for any Harmonicats fan. And lots of it! 22 songs.
Many of these songs are part of their set that The 'Cats play in concert. (Their Live Concert CD "One Night in San Francisco" has live versions of many of them.)
This CD is the studio version and includes something for everyone. You get a new arrangement of "Peg O¹ My Heart" plus "Cherry Pink" but none of the other songs are on any other album!
In fact, these guys are so cool they put in a brand new recording of Vaya Con Dios and didn¹t even mention it. They just threw it in there. I still am amazed at how those three guys can make so much music.
You've got to get this album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A hidden Steppenwolf treasure.......2004-09-27

On the cover it says "John Kay of Steppenwolf had his beginning with The Sparrow..." as if it was a whole different band. In truth, Sparrow was Steppenwolf in all but name, a blues-rock treasure Columbia didn't realize they had until Sparrow moved on, changed their name and really boomed under ABC/ Dunhill's sponsorship. This album has a smaller percentage of originals than their later releases did, but even here the Steppenwolf fan can hear pre-echoes of material that more familiar material from their collection is based on. Like "Square-Headed People", which was all but rewritten and released as "Power Play". Or "Chasin' Shadows", which was redone as "Desperation" on the first album where we also first heard "Born To Be Wild". There is a neat Byrdish 12-string figure during this song. And best of all, the song "Twisted", which they later included on their first live release, appears here in its only studio version. It's too bad this classic album never did pop up later as a Steppenwolf release--it's just as valid a prequel as the more familiar "Early Steppenwolf", using the same personnel as that album, but in a studio setting here rather than the live setting as on that effort. It's also too bad it's only available as an import now.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete 1967 Sparrow Recordings.......2001-10-03

In 1969, while "Born to Be Wild" was the next big thing, Columbia decided to issue these recordings from 1967. Featuring Dennis Edmonton (better known as Mars Bonfire) and Nick St. Nicholas (who did not join Steppenwolf right off, but came in for the "Birthday Party" LP). Columbia issued only one single off of these tapes in 1967 and did not show interest in issuing anything else. These recordings show the group working out of a blues mold (on Kay's material), a little jazz (Jerry Edmonton sings on "King Pin"), pop ("Down Goes Your Love Life" with, surprisingly,Nick and Goldy McJohn singing!) and even a theremin used on "Green Bottle Lover". Mars Bonfire sings a few tracks ("Isn't It Strange" "Tomorrow's Ship" "Chasing Shadows"), John sings most, and Jerry gets in there. Very interesting to say the least. Not just for collectors, but fans as well. This has the complete 1993 Columbia CD plus the two songs from the LP they left off. Also notable is Mars Bonfire's solo album from 1968 (Uni 73027, reissued minus two tracks plus two by Columbia in 1969- CS-9834). That's another classic not on CD. It has the original "Born to be Wild" of course.
