Although he's known primarily for the crossover hit "Just a Friend," to categorize Biz Markie's career on the basis of that song would be wholly unjust. This Cold Chillin' compilation sets the record straight. As a member of the stylistically diverse Juice Crew, the formidable clique that included Big Daddy Kane's slick debonairness, Roxanne Shante's defiant b-girl stance, and the tales of hard-knock raconteur Kool G. Rap, Biz Markie's clown-prince character more than held his own. Despite the fact that he's maintained a low profile in recent years, a fact that was probably hastened by his losing a landmark sampling case to Gilbert O'Sullivan, Biz Markie's manic energy and unbridled persona paved the way for distinctive MCs like Ol' Dirty Bastard and Busta Rhymes. His charisma certainly helped him get over his legal troubles, but the Biz's deft beatboxing skills, humorous storytelling, and freestyle finesse are all clear on undisputed classics like "Nobody Beats the Biz," "Vapors," and "Make the Music with Your Mouth, Biz." Had "This Is Something for the Radio," and "Just Rhymin' with the Biz" (a Big Daddy Kane track, but a classic Biz appearance nonetheless) shown up here, this compilation would be definitive. In spite of those omissions, this fun and funky career retrospective succeeds in giving credit where it is due. --Del F. CowieCustomer Reviews:

Juice Crew alum Masta Ace wouldn't make his mark until he moved west to Los Angeles and began making jeep-ass music, but, in 1990, he was the liquid philosopher, cracking both wise and intelligent. This record collects nearly all the tracks from his debut Take a Look Around, a mostly slept-on classic. Ace flexes tremendous range on some of Marley Marl's best production work, including the hilariously on-point impression of a fellow diabolical Crew member on "Me and the Biz," the snappy club fave "Music Man," and the updated Scott-Heronisms of "Take a Look Around." Ace's stream-of-consciousness flows on "Brooklyn Battles" and "I Got Ta" sealed his underground rep, and that's where he would emerge from in the mid-90s. Heads will appreciate the inclusion of rare B-sides, especially the intoxicatingly oddball "Go Where I Send Thee." An easily likable set of beats and rhymes that have aged well. --Jeff Chang

MC Shan may be unfairly remembered as the loser of the BDP-instigated mid-'80s war that pitted Queensbridge vs. the South Bronx. But nothing can take away the achievement of "The Bridge," a record that changed hip-hop with Marley Marl's towering drums and arena-sized reverb, and Shan's audacious tribute to old-school parties in the Queensbridge Projects. While the story of mid-'80s hip-hop is often told in terms of LL Cool J and Run DMC, the Juice Crew held the crown in the underground, and Shan was the rhyme-fighter of choice. "Down By Law," "Beat Biter," and "Juice Crew Law" are full of adrenalin-injected battle rhymes over Marl's early sampling experiments. The Best of Cold Chillin' collects the best of Shan's first two albums, Down By Law and Born to Be Wild, and a track from the Colors soundtrack. After the epic Battle of the Bridge, the ground changed quickly for Shan and Marl, as Public Enemy speeded up the tempos and began kicking Afrocentric themes. On "I Pioneered This," Shan rocks a favorite (unproven) conspiracy of the time: "Puma's the brand 'cause the Klan makes Troops." A fine document of the mid-'80s underground.--Jeff ChangCustomer Reviews:

"The ultmate collection of Kool G Rap & DJ Polo on CD".......2005-08-28
Excellent introduction to a Golden-Age Rap Pioneer.......2002-10-22
The 2 disc collection starts off in the mid-1980's, back when the Marley Marl-led "Juice Crew" was among the early hip-hop posses to achieve prominence, being signed to Prism Records, which eventually would become Cold Chillin'. Shortly afterwards, label head Ty Williams secured a distribution deal with Warner Bros.
"I'm Fly" and "It's a Demo" are sparse early tracks which makes listeners focus even more on Kool G's lyrics. At this time, he was somewhere between LL Cool J and Rakim, spouting whimsical braggadocio with occasional inflections of sober battle-ready aggression. His technique would be fine-tuned on his first album, "Road to the Riches", featuring the title cut, "Dope Car" (sampling Gary Numan), "Poison", and "Men at Work". Marley's 808-driven funk production is at it's best here.
On his second lp, "Wanted Dead or Alive", Kool G's thematic flow started becoming more gangster-driven; by 1990, NWA had opened the floodgates for gangster rap tales, and "Riches" didn't exactly burn up the charts; maybe Kool G felt he had nothing to lose. "Streets of New York" was a brief radio hit, with a saxophone riff that was ahead of its time. Other standout cuts were "Erace Racism" and "Talk Like Sex". Most of the production on this album was handled by Large Professor, Eric B, and Kool G. himself..
"Live and Let Die" would be delayed by several months in 1992 because of the "Cop Killer" scandal. Cold Chillin' would lose their distribution deal with Warner Bros. in the aftermath. The album was relased independently. Produced mostly by Ice Cube affiliate Sir Jinx, the album was G-funk fueled, with even more relentless gangster-tales spit by Kool G, who recorded most of the album in Los Angeles, and he was in town during the riots...
"Ill Street Blues", the lead single, was actually handled by the Trackmasters, who would go on to make major pop hits for LL Cool J, Will Smith, and more. ... Kool G went on to record "4,5,6" for Epic/Sony, but his sales still stalled at the 200,000 range, despite a boost from TrackMasters on a few cuts. That would be his first and last album for Sony; the next lp, "Roots of Evil" would be released independently on his own Ill Street Records; shortly afterwards, influential indie rap label RAWKUS approached him for a new record deal, and "The Giancana Story" was rumored to be his best work yet-- reportedly, it included a duet with REM's Michael Stipe (!?).. But the label has had bizarre internal problems for the past couple of years, despite recently getting major distribution through MCA/Universal, and the album kept being delayed-- at this writing, it is said to have been shelved permanently, and Kool G. has been released from the label...
