Blame it on the bossa nova, but this chick has got soul. By filtering her Portuguese roots through the trip-hop she was weaned on, Nelly Furtado creates a hypnotic form of R&B/alternapop that at times sounds like Fiona Apple, Macy Gray, and Gwen Stefani all rolled into a Portishead song. Cutting her teeth at four Lilith Fair dates before even having a record contract, Furtado seems accelerated far beyond her 21 years. Listen, and you can hear the Portuguese fado tradition, Brazilian beats, flashy urban rhymes--enough snap, crackle, and pop to fill your breakfast bowl. Put your ear closer to the speaker, though, and you can sense that this is the sound of a multicultural young woman finding her own identity through all the pop she's been fed. If you're someone who likes to sing along to soaring vocals or who likes to get hip to a new star before she goes supernova, this is an album to own. --Heidi Sherman

5 out of 5 stars Lucky to have her..........2007-01-12

I definitely think we're lucky to have Nelly in the music industry, as this album clearly proves. There are really no bad songs on this album. Her voice is different and amazing, and there are moments on this CD that just take your breath away.

Standout tracks: Hey Man, On the Radio, Like a Bird, Turn Off the Light, Party

4 out of 5 stars A Spunky & Eccentric Debut........2007-01-03

I fully admit that I have not listened to new types of music in a long while. I'm a fan of 1960's & 70's British Rock & Motown. I did not care much for the music of the 1990's. In "Whoa Nelly," she bares all in her songs. swirling melodies, & open emotions, give her tunes a blend of bossa nova & folk pop. Her restless vocals kept you listening, even though the repititions grew tiresome. She reminds me a little of the alternative music from the 1970's with a 1990's twist. I liked "I'm Like A Bird & Turn Off The Light" the most. She certainly sounds like an artist that has some staying power.

1 out of 5 stars get your own sound, nelly!!!!!.......2006-12-18

Anyone that knows anything about the canadian music scene will tell miss nelly is a phoney. There is another canadian singer out there called "Esthero", and she is the real deal. Nelly copied her unique sound and made a mediocre album for the masses. And to make things worse, nelly has strayed away from this sound altogether and has made a top 40 hip hop album-yuck!!! At least esthero has stayed true to herself and is making music that just doesnt appeal to 'the norm'. But dont fret, esthero has gotten back at nelly. She released the single, "o.g. bitch". Check it out, it is sooooo good.

4 out of 5 stars classic nelly furtado is far better than the new junk.......2006-11-03

nelly furtado's new song is catchy, but it doesn't come near the higher quality of this album. this is when she was still a little folky, but there are beginnings of pop/hip-hop influences in her work. it's a great album!

4 out of 5 stars Whoa, Nelly! is completely an independent album........2006-10-06

After listening to `Loose' I thought I take a couple of steps back and listen to her debut album. I first heard Nelly on the radio with "I'm Like a Bird." It was definitely catchy but never bought the album because anyone can write one catchy song. After hearing this album I see that she has managed to create an album all her own and I also understand why she had accumulated so many fans. The cover of this album is very cute because it has this 70's appeal to it.

The first thing I notice in this album is the unique beats and rhythms. The sheer audacity of the album is really what won me over, though. It doesn't pull its punches, and much of it is clearly felt through her voice even though very nasal at times, is often balanced by her own lower, more soulful back-up. She often attaches a 40's jazz style vibrato to the notes she carries to smooth out her meowing.

Her lyrics vary from cut-&-dry to romantically poetic without being overly sentimental, and her accompaniment is touched by every side of the spectrum. There's everything from classical string arrangements, to metallic guitar riffs, with turn-table scratching, bouncing techno synthesizer, and her cultural, acoustic guitar in- between.

The tracks that I've gathered as my favorites are "Legend," "Well, Well", "My Love Grows Deeper Part 1," "I Will Make U Cry," "Scared of You,"(You liked me till you heard my s*** on the radio)", "Baby Girl," and "Turn off The Light." Each expresses strength and life very well. "I Will Make U Cry" as well as "Party" are very emotional songs, filled the rawest of raw feelings and I also love the instrumental introduction on "Hey Man."

This album did not disappoint me. I was very impressed of the uniqueness and originality of her first album. Rather than try to sound like others, she crafted her own style first time out. Nelly Furtado is an artist who obviously has a lot to say and for us to hear.

5 out of 5 stars You'll fall in love with the Unlovables!.......2006-03-27

Pop punk so sweet it's bad for your health! If your not a fan of pop punk stay clear of this. This is bubble gum pop punk to the core and makes no apologizes for it. The songs are so fast, short, catchy they'll stay in your head for days. And if you're a straight guy I dare you to try and not fall in love with Hallie or Chelsea. I don't think there are any tracks that stick out in my mind as being the best songs on the album because the CD just flows together so well. Put it in and you'll be having so much fun you'll never stop to notice. The only bad thing I might say about this album is Hallie kind of makes up words to make lyrics sound a like, like what the hell is a cell phona? However this just adds to the cuteness of it so it's not really a big deal at all. So buy this album before you die! And if you like this I also recomment Mikey Erg's (the drummer) other band The Ergs or just about anything on Whoa Oh Records is worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars True horror rock.......2007-02-19

So many "horror rock" bands are simple carbon copies of the Misfits or Samhain with nothing original to offer. If they don't fall in that category they are simply trying to rip off the Cramps or Nekromantix style of psychobilly. Calabrese does not fall into either of these categories... they fall in line more with Nim Vind... simply meaning... they are inspired by all the above bands... but have found their own voice in a sea of unoriginals!

Really catchy, melodic horror punk that isn't trying to be a carbon copy of the Misfits and I love the samples from B movies interspersed throughout the album.
Thank god for ipods so I can listen to this while I'm on the go,
I'm actually kind of surprised Calabrese aren't bigger than what they are

    5 out of 5 stars Great horror!.......2006-05-16

Not just another Misfits or AFI clone! They bring a great, straight-forward rockin' sound to the musical subgenre of horror rock. Danzig is jealous!

5 out of 5 stars AHA! Excellence in audio form!.......2005-09-16

Its perfect horror rock. Not too much like psychobilly and not too much like doom rock, its right where it should be. Eerie ambient voices, fast paced music, short songs, and crooning and growling vocals are what its all about. And these guys nailed it on thier first full length album. They proved horror rock can live on without stand-up bass or overly goofy or dark lyrics. I applaud them for a job incredibly well done! BUY IT and become a minion of the Young American Mystic Cult of Horror!

5 out of 5 stars unholy vomiting zombies .......2005-09-08

For those of you that just can't get enough of the Misfits or Tiger Army or any of the other amazing horror based groups out there, this is THE album you must hear. Calabrese puts it together like it should be, zombies, hearses, and a bucket of blood. 13 Halloweens should be on the shelves of every music store in America. Truly amazing work.

I'm always impressed by Rhino soundtracks quality; specially the MGM musicals. This is no exception. Fully recommended.
