L.A.'s Dilated Peoples get back to b-boy basics with their long-awaited major-label debut. Longtime darlings of hip-hop's underground, Dilated stays true to their roots with The Platform, combining spare, churning bass hooks with Babu's epic turntable episodes. Guest artists like Tha Alkaholiks, Planet Asia, and Freestyle Fellowships' Aceyalone add fuel to the flames set ablaze by the straight-spittings of MCs Iriscience and Evidence. Buoyantly braggadocious, the fellas swap positive abstract poetics with swagger and grace--rhymes like "I never got redemption from an honorable mention / So my lyrics hug the bat with the tightest suspension" thump chests as much as they feed souls. Their constant boasting is also the album's only setback, as all the self-lauding can, and sometimes does, get tired. --Sylvia W. Chan

5 out of 5 stars First-class recordings of musical gems for viola and piano.......2007-02-01

This CD was initially recorded in 1993 and was reissued in 2001. That is fortunate for those of us who missed it the first time around, for Paul Coletti has produced one of the finest recorded examples of viola playing to be found. Coupled with the sensitive and thoughtful piano playing of Leslie Howard, this makes for benchmark renditions of these musical gems. Hyperion's sound is gorgeous and perfectly balanced throughout. The listener is drawn into the music making, with all its expressive and tonal nuances.

The Rebecca Clarke Sonata, for many years out of print, is stunning for its technical and emotional range, especially given the fact that it was written in 1919 and by a woman violist. The classical music world is thankfully quite different today, but there was a time when female composers or performers could be counted on one hand. When the sonata begins with the rhythmic motive "Re-bec-ca Clarke" marked 'Allegro impetuoso', one can imagine her playing her own piece and simultaneously announcing her arrival as a violist and a composer. Coletti manages to make the movement (as well as the entire piece) sound powerful yet, dare I say, feminine, without macho bravura. The 2nd movement, Scherzo, taken at breakneck speed, is a stunning display of technical proficiency and easily qualifies as the equal of any recorded violin performance. The 3rd movement incorporates modal and `olde English' musical references, drawing to a triumphant close. The return of the sonata's initial theme is now a confident self-affirmation, admirably played by the two performers.

Frank Bridge's two pieces are given seamless execution, hiding the fact that they are extraordinarily difficult. Listening to the end of Allegro Appassionato, you are not aware of shifts and bow-changes, only the musical line. The Percy Grainger pieces cannot be considered great music, but are played faultlessly by Coletti, which is the mark of a true artist. The Vaughn-Williams Romance is simply beautiful, as are the remaining pieces on this outstanding CD. All are played with a beautiful sound, flawless intonation, and impeccable musicianship.

Not to be missed by violists, lovers of English music, or of the finest string playing.

1 out of 5 stars very disappointing.......2005-08-02

Promo says recorded by "Big Movie Orchestra" but it sounds more like a couple of synthesizers. The "strings" are OK but anything on brass or wind sounds AWFUL. Some tracks are not even on pitch. Seller would not refund, either - adding insult to injury! Now it's a handsome coaster for my desk!

4 out of 5 stars The perfect PLATFORM for the true hiphop fan!!.......2007-01-25

To some, Dilated came out of nowhere to explode onto the scene with the monster single "Work The Angels". A maniacal joint of ear splitting beats, heavy guitar samples, crisp snares and pyschotic cuts+slices from DJ Revolution (before Babu joined) backed by ill flows from Iriscience and Evidence. After I heard that I was left with my jaw on the floor.I thought real hiphop just got an adrenalin shot in its arm. So when the album dropped I snapped it up hoping to hear more of the same. Although there's plenty of tracks hear only afew really grabbed my attention in the same way. That was mainly b'cuz there were too many solo tracks on it by each member (just my opinion). It kind of had the feeling of a collective of solo artists doing their joints then doing afew together and putting them on 1 album. But thats where the gripes end b'cuz other than that its amazing. When they come together on a track its hiphop bliss all the way. Tracks like "The Platform", "No Retreat" (w/B-Real), "Guaranteed", "Right On" (w/Alkaholiks), "Service", "Ear Drums Pop", "Annihilation", "Ear Drums Pop (Remix)" and the aforementioned "Work The Angels" all hit the target with percision. Even some of the solo tracks "Years In The Making" and "The Shape Of Things To Come" (w/Aceyalone) are excellent. The rest of the tracks are either too similar or just average in comparision to the rest so they sound like filler material. With some of the best beats Ive heard in awhile from the likes of Alchemist, E-Swift, Joey Chavez and Evidence+Babu your head wont be able to stop nodding. Excellent debut from "the crew called Dilated".

5 out of 5 stars A modern day masterpiece!.......2006-09-23

Yes this is a bias review, I will admit that. To me this is an outstanding CD from one of the best groups still doing it today. When I first heard this back when it came out, I was really suprised and excited that hip hop is still alive and that their are artists out there still representin the real. You may have slept on it or just couldn't vibe w/it. As a real fan of hip hop music, a found that this listen was not at all dissapointing, but instead inspiring! Peace.

3 out of 5 stars Why does it sound so repetitive?.......2005-09-28

Dilated has been around for a minute and this album was their introduction to the world outside of the LA underground. Consisting of Rakka Iriscience, Evidence & DJ Babu (of the legendary Beat Junkies) this album has all the elements of a classic boom bap hip hop record: Bangin beats, elevated lyrics, & scratches that just seem to be perfect. Given all of this how could I possibly rate it so harshly? Basically each song is great on it's own but if you try to listen to it as a whole it seems tedious, repetitive and almost boring! Rakka and Ev are both top caliber emcees and they come strong on this album, but it is defiantly Rakka who grabs your attention with his almost off beat flow and deep voice. Babu does an amazing job crafting beats that like I said hark back to the days of boom bap like few producers can. Add his precise cuts and scratches and he might just come across as a genius. This album is not terrible and definitely worth checkin for, especially considering their truly bad album that was released last year "Neighborhood Watch." This album is not bad just too much of the same!

5 out of 5 stars I Know my hungers real I still get Nauseaus at shows............2005-04-13

Super bangin underground release from a then unknown to the MTV watchin so called hiphop fans who think Nelly's the greatest MC to touch a mic. This album plays so smooth, most of the tracks fade into one another. If u got the re-release it has the Erick Sermon remix of "The Platform" which is ok but not better than The Alchemist produced original or The Alchemist remix. Every track is hot, but the ones to check for are the title track,Annihilation,Shape of things to come, Work The Angles, No Retreat, and the Alkaholiks laced Right On. Once again the production is FIRE with heat supplied by The Alchemist,Evidence, Joey Chavez,E-swift, and DJ Babu. Evidence brings nutthin but butter smooth lyrics and mind blowin tracks. While Rakaa(Iriscience)brings tha hottest lyrics of the year, his voice unmistakable and he brings intellectual yet street flows. Babu brings some dope tracks and some ear slicin' scratches. The best tracks are produced by The Alchemist- everything the kid touches turns to gold or platinum ( no PUN intended). I f u aint got this one cop it quickly and get every other Dilated album. SUPER TIGHT.. so dope it should be illegal to sell!

5 out of 5 stars Underground Classic -- REAL hip hop.......2004-10-24

This is a classic from start to finish. Anyone who rates this less than 5 stars has no idea what hip hop is. They are either listen to eminem d12 g-unit and 50 cent and think that their commerical crap, weak production and pathetic lyrics are good or they arent fans of hip hop at all. Anyway, the beats from The Platform have an incredible underground feel to them, and lyrically they all tear the mic up. Not to mention how ill their flow is. The production is top-notch here also. It's hard to select a few tracks as favorites, but i would have to say The Platform, No Retreat, Right On (definitely the best song here, absolute classic), Years In The Making, and Ear Drums Pop. But all the tracks are classic. Make sure u cop this if u haven't already.

5 out of 5 stars Very Beautiful & Better than I Thought.......2006-08-01

I bought this CD out of curiosity. A few dozen violas produce an immense breadth of sound. Add to this some high-level playing, plus a variety of pieces. A wonderful way to explore the instrument.

5 out of 5 stars The best of large group viola.......2002-07-11

This is a most unique collection of works. The mellow but sonorous sound that is unique to the viola is amplified 48 times - nothing else does tribute to the viola like this recording. This is the BEST recording for viola that I've ever heard!

5 out of 5 stars Violins and 'celli. Who needs 'em??.......1999-08-08

A delightful exercise in orchestration, this recording features 48 violas from the major London orchestras in numbers ranging from Gershwhin to Bacharach to Faure. With the exception of some percussion here and there, a harp and the occasional string bass, these selections are NOTHING but violas.

For anyone who loves Merchant-Ivory films and recalls the background music for Howard's End (my favorite), Mock Morris has to keep playing over and over in one's head; but for me it's never annoying, only happy.

This ensemble enhances every composition - marvelous!

5 out of 5 stars A delight!.......2000-08-12

This is one of the most delightful recordings of Grainger's works I have heard. If you're looking for Grainger or just enjoyable music, this is for you. It lifts my spirits and inspires me with the great performance as well as the wonderful, lyrical melodies.

5 out of 5 stars More music of Percy Grainger.......1999-09-29

Chandos is certainly to be lauded for their wonderful Grainger project. This volume which features Grainger's chamber music is wonderful. The members of the Academy of St. Martin's in the Fields deliver a wonderful performance.

For those who love the music of Percy Grainger, this recording is a necessary one to have.

Here's some greasy, authentically swinging groove music by a drummer with both feet planted firmly on the ground. Actual Proof, by virtue of its instrumental focus, and the blessed absence of ostentatious vocals and awful songs, is as good a jazz-funk amalgam as one is likely to encounter in this age of prefab, MIDI-ized, one-size-fits-all airplay prayers. This thanks to a series of witty, well-conceived arrangements that Clark and his band tackle with wit, good taste, and a real sense of the music's historical context and connections to modern jazz--going back all the way to T-Bone Walker and Louis Jordan, and as far forward as Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis (a truly dancing rethink on the seldom-covered Miles in the Sky masterpiece "Stuff").

The boppish, four-to-the-floor ferocity of "Cops and Robbers" underscores Clark's deep feeling for the blues, gut-bucket funk, and prebop swing ... not surprising, given that his résumé included Frogman Henry, Jimmy Reed, Albert King, and Freddy King by the time he graduated from high school (which gives his shuffles on "Stringers" and "The Famous Door" a real bacon-and-biscuits skank). Clark fronts a fine band (particularly enlivened by 8-string guitarist Charlie Hunter's Hammond organ-styled comp), which delineates that point where the rubber meets the road--where swing and funk intersect--as on the gloriously Mickey Spillane film noir of trumpeter Tim Ouirnette's "Attack of the Forty-Foot Woman" and the atmospheric, agonizingly slow groove to "59th Street Station," on which bass clarinetist Benny Maupin and bassist Ted Trimble illustrate the timelessness of the blues. And with his feverishly syncopated bass drum and dancing snare-cymbal combinations, drummer Clark gives these groove-oriented tunes a grit and authenticity seldom found in so-called fusion records. What it is. --Chip Stern

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, but no bassist!.......2003-02-26

Surprise! I wanted to get some Mike Clark because like everyone else I'm a fan of his work with Herbie Hancock, and he also had a turn with Brand X (Morrocan Roll, I think). I was really digging the grooves on this album but I noticed a lack of bottom. When I re-checked the credits, I realized that 8-string guitar means that Charlie Hunter was comping AND doing the basslines at the same time. I was really enjoying the comping, sounds like hammond B3 here and there (he's using a bit of chorus or something) but there are no basslines, other than hitting the root note with the odd passing tone. Also because it's 8-string guitar, the strings are narrow gauge so the bass notes that are there don't really stand out. To the one reviewer that complained of only one solo by Hunter, let me tell you (as a guitar player) that soloing and doing the bass line at the same time is not easy. The only guitar player who can play like that was Lenny Breau. For a funky player like Mike Clark to do an album with no bass player is a little confusing. The drums are mixed right up front through the whole album, and there is plenty to listen to. The mixing and recording are of course vastly different than the dry fat sound on Thrust, here being more ambient with reverb added, and the bass drum is like a big undamped THUD. The tunes are good to excellent with some great grooves, and the solos are good but perhaps understated. This is a drummer's album, meaning the drums are the main instrument, with the rest of the band in supporting roles. Perhaps one of the albums with Paul Jackson on bass would be a good point to start listening to Clark's solo stuff, and then come back to this one. However, if you are a bass player you may have a treat playing along with this album cause there's no existing bass to get in the way, so you get to jam with Mike Clark! Also, if I recall there is an upright bass player on one tune, but I don't recall which.

Excuse me, but the true "Original Funky Drummer" title goes to Jabo Starks, JB's drummer.

Mike's good, (even great with Herbie) but Jabo is THE MAN!

    2 out of 5 stars disapointment.......2002-09-13

I must admit that I bought this album because of Charlie Hunter's participation. I'm a big Hunter fan and I'd read and heard good things about clark. I must say though that the album is disapointing. Charlie Hunter only takes one solo, but that's not what bugs me. It's the artist that do solo that bug me. Clark and Hunter do fine on the album, but none of the horn players who take most of the solos are particularly exciting. If you want some good funky jazz, I recomend checking out the Charlie Hunter Trio or the original quartet or some of Scofield's latest efforts like A Go Go, Bump, & Uberjam (all of these artists' albums are quite good though, these are the funky ones). However, if you're used to the likes of Karl Denson, Stanton Moore, or any of those types, you might like this album, and I don't say this to dis' Denson or Moore.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Fusion/funk/jazz.......reguardless.......2001-11-27

This album shows a great jazz funk sense by all players. It's a great lineup of players including Bennie Maupin and Mike Clark, both funky a** cats from the headhunters, as well as charlie hunter. This cd transitions from funk fusion, to straight ahead, and also goes a little out with some straight prog fusion feels. For those people (who rated this cd with one star) to say that this isnt the mike clark that we love is insane. If you are diggin the grooves he plays on flood, he's got them right here on this cd. First of all, of cousre this cd isn't Flood, but what is? For one thing, there is no herbie on this album, and no bassist like Paul Jackson, but those are all hancock's songs, and plus ITS A LIVE CD!!! there is no more energy than a live cd especially flood from 1975(the peak of fusion funk). These guys are all great musicians, and Bennie Maupin stays true to his funkyness. Charle HUnter lacks a little, but MIke Clark keepin it groovin with his isolated limb playing and his incredible time feel. Overall, great album-Mike is up to par, and the whole cd grooves. Pe@ce

    5 out of 5 stars Beyond Funk.......2001-03-26

I just listened to my copy f Actual Proof. This is a cd that reaches out to the folks who want to hear something different. The entire thing swung from A to Z. I bought this cd based on the live shows I attended. I followed the band from Atlanta, Chicago, Toronto and Montreal. This group played everything from funk to jazz and blues to the avante guard. I loved it. The blues on the cd Bacon Phatt was a thrill for me as were The Viper and Aristede. This is way beyond headhuntes. No click tracks or studio tricks just some great blowing from all. I see where somone did not like the blues shuffle. I was at these gigs and taped them, never did I hear Warermelon Man turn into a shuffle although later in the set they did play a blues shuffle. People should learn the difference between a blues shuffle and an eight note funk groove before commenting on the music but I guess this guy is not the brightest bulb on the tree. How could anyone go to hear Mike Clark and not dig the blues? I guess this cd and live group is not for the brown rice, seaweed eating and carrot juice crowd. If your white, uptight and on the right this is not for you. Those who voted for Geo. Bush will probably not like this group. Not being able to appreciate a blues shuffle like the one Charlie and Mike were puttin down shows once again the huge cultural gap between people. I mean without the blues there is no funk, this is something that people need to understand. That shuffle they played had chills on my arm and tears in my eyes. Look if your down and want to swing, dig deep into the blues and like grits and gravey and pure soul with some deep jazz roots this is definately for you. How could anybody think a funk groove from the seventies could compare with the new stuff Mike's playing is to square and uninformed for me. Survival of the Fittest, the old headhunters record sounds like someone playing three blind mice compared to this cd. Check it out for yourself, never mind the Geo. Bush vibes, this music is for the people who are real. This is a really great cd, let's move foward.

5 out of 5 stars Every last note..........2006-06-14

A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
    Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.
