Although Bach's "48" were a long-time Sviatoslav Richter staple, the great pianist seems on relatively careful footing in these 1969 performances compared to ultra-secure, if overly severe 1970 studio recording of Book One. Tempos, for one, are a bit slower, and one encounters occasional scrambles in some of the knottier selections. The inferior sound, though, limits the appeal of this release to hard-core Richter specialists. --Jed Distler
