A lonely Westerner in Nashville, Marty Robbins salved his soul by cutting an album (in one afternoon) of mostly self-composed cowboy ballads. One of them was a four-and-a-half-minute epic, "El Paso," that broke every rule of Top 40 programming to become a No. 1 pop and country hit in 1960. Robbins was arguably the most surefooted and accomplished singer in all country music, and that was never more obvious than on these Western ballads performed to often breathtaking perfection with a very small group and a vocal trio. Other titles include "Big Iron" (also a Top 30 hit), "Running Gun," and Western classics like "Cool Water," "Billy the Kid," and "The Strawberry Roan." Three extra tracks flesh out the 1999 release, including "Saddle Tramp" (the B-side of "Big Iron") and "The Hanging Tree" (title song from the 1959 Gary Cooper Western). --Colin EscottCustomer Reviews:

A romantic's collection if ever there was one, this cachet of songs graced the equally heart-tugging film. King of the Croon and Swoon, Nat King Cole's "Stardust" is probably the most obvious of the young lovers' themes here. Louis Armstrong and Jimmy Durante, ordinarily not the most romantic of sorts, prove themselves worthy contenders with "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" and "As Time Goes By," respectively. "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" gets an elegantly simple treatment from Carly Simon, and Tammy Wynette's "Stand by Your Man" confirms her status as the late, great Queen of Country. The only disappointments with this collection are the absence of heart-wrenching numbers by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, or even Johnny Mathis; and the inclusion of the horrendous rendition of "When I Fall in Love" by the over-rated Celine Dion with Clive Griffin. --Steve GdulaCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
They may have rationed meat, milk, canned goods, and gasoline, but there was no limit to the musical talent during World War II. Morale-boosting sounds on the home front and "over there" were one of the Allies' most potent weapons. WWII gave birth to many of the 1940s' most popular artists and songs, as well as many of the most important independent record labels. Songs That Got Us Through WWII is the first of a two-volume series collecting the hits that kept the home fires burning and brought a little bit of America to the G.I.s overseas. Compiled and developed by singer/songwriter/music historian Billy Vera, Vol. 1 features many of the era's biggest artists, including The Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, The Mills Brothers, The Ink Spots, Harry James, and many more.Customer Reviews:

Songs that got us through "the big one"..........2006-11-20
The CD starts on a strong upbeat note with The Andrews Sisters belting out "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." Vic Schoen and his orchestra perform the musical arrangement which packs a big punch! I like this song for its "swing" feel and its playfulness at the same time.
The next song, "I'll Be Seeing You," switches right away to the sadder aspects of war. This classic tearjerker song deals with the pain two lovers or spouses experience when one must go to war. Frank Sinatra sings this beautifully. Other songs that deal with the pain and stress of war include "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" performed flawlessly by Duke Ellington and his Orchestra; "I'll Walk Alone" by Martha Tilton and "I Don't Want To Walk Without You" sung by Helen Forrest with Harry James and his Orchestra.
The CD also gives us songs that express hope for a quick end to the war so that a sense of normalcy can return. I love the beautiful "When The Lights Go On (All Over The World)" and "(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs Of Dover." These are truly classic pop vocals.
"G.I. Jive" and "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive" are great upbeat songs, too. Terrific!
The CD has a solid ending with the touching "It's Been A Long, Long Time" sung by Kitty Kallen with Harry James and his Orchestra performing the musical arrangement.
The quality of the remastering could be better. Throughout the CD there is a lot of surface noise and it is obvious that these songs were recorded a very long while ago. However, in the liner notes there is a note that these recordings were remastered before superior technology was available to reduce surface noise. I considered giving this CD 4 1/2 stars for this but the songs are so good that this will be a five star review.
Bill Vera contributes an informative essay for the liner notes and there are several great photos of the artists on this CD. You also get the song credits and the date each hit was released. Excellent!
Overall, this is a great CD for people who love American pop classics from the World War II era and big band vocals in general. I highly recommend this CD; and if you like it then I suggest you try volume two of Songs That Got Us Through World War II. May you enjoy this nostalgic CD as much as I did!

We are indebted to Wigmore Hall for preserving this 1998 recital by the great, beloved mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, who was tragically taken from us in 2006. Now that her recordings are all we have left, this one is particularly valuable: it captures the vibrant immediacy of a live performance. The concentrated, spellbound silence of the audience is like a tangible presence. It also captures the incomparable beauty of Hunt Lieberson's voice: a dark alto in the low register, a warm mezzo in mid-range, crowned by a radiant top. Seamless, focused, and pure, she could make it float ethereally or glow with intensity; her intonation and breath-control were impeccable. The program illustrates the breadth of her repertoire. Baroque opera was among her specialties, and the record includes two slow Handel arias, one a lament, one a prayer. She carries the influence of the bel canto style and its tendency to swell notes with delayed vibrato over into the Five Mahler Songs on Rückert poems, making them sound a bit fussy and calculated, particularly the first and last, which are extremely slow. In the fourth, however, the initial despair and final heroic resignation come out beautifully. In both these groups, one misses the orchestra, especially because the pianist, an admirable, empathetic partner, sounds distant and subdued. The program ends with works by her husband, Peter Lieberson: two songs on Rilke poems and an aria from the opera Ashoka's Dream. No composer could wish for a more persuasive advocate. She brings out their majesty, passion, and inward expressiveness with total identification. As encores, the spiritual "Deep River," the first verse in the low register, the second an octave higher, is deeply devout; Brahms' "Unbewegte laue Luft" starts softly and ends in a burst of glory. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:

A reissued recital in tribute to a great artist.......2007-06-01
For one thing, it's her only solo recital on disk, and it features some staples of her repertoire--two arias from Handel's Theodora, two beautiful Rilke settings by Petyer Lieberson, and the spiritual 'Deep River' as one of the encores. Hunt Lieberson was also a great Mahler singer but never recored any. She was deeply moving in the Third Sym. as she is here in the five Ruckert lieder. Roger Nognobles offers exceptionally sensitive accompaniments, particularly in the Mahler--I'd rank this CD as first choice if you want these songs outside their usual orchestral setting.
In sum, a unique recital form a much loved and greatly missed singer.
Great Lieberson Recital.......2007-05-31
Lorraine Hunt Lieberson was one of the finest Mezzo's of our time. She had a gorgeous dark and warm tone with so much depth. In this recital she is at her absolute artistic peak and the audience realize that they are hearing something special. Roger Vignoles is one of the great piano accompanists of our time, and he shows it in this recording. Listening to this recital brings home the tragedy of Liebersons untimely death last year.

Amazon.com essential recording
The first of many artistic milestones in the long and illustrious collaboration of Frank Sinatra and arranger Nelson Riddle that began at Capitol Records, In the Wee Small Hours is a first in other notable ways, as well: it was the pair's first 12-inch LP; their first album devoted entirely to ballads; the first "concept album," a program of songs designed to be heard in a particular sequence that sustains a mood and suggests a story; the introduction of Sinatra's definitive "saloon singer" persona; and the first flowering of Sinatra's mature artistic sensibility. Oh, and it's a masterpiece, too. The cover portrait suggests the mood of late-night desolation almost as effectively as the music, with Sinatra in the corner, smoking a solitary cigarette on deserted street illuminated only by the a foggy, blue-green glow of lamplight. Loneliness, thy name is Frank! They say that memories of Ava Gardner caused him to break down after finishing this aching version of "When Your Lover Has Gone." Riddle's clarinet theme for "What Is this Thing Called Love?" is as haunting as Cole Porter's melody itself. And if there's a more devastating evocation of solitude than "It Never Entered My Mind"... well it must be on Only the Lonely. With songs like "I'll Be Around" and "Dancing on the Ceiling" to suggest at least the hope of hope, Wee Small Hours may flirt with despair, but never succumbs to it. It's the kind of comforting company that misery likes best. --Jim EmersonAmazon.com

The Range Of Sinatra.......2007-07-10
My Top Sinatra album, Charlie!.......2007-06-30
BUY IT. If you don't like it... well, I have no words for you. It's a gamble you will have to make. But think of it this way... why do you know who Frank Sinatra is? There must be a good reason.
The single finest collection of mood songs ever recorded--BRAVO, FRANK !!!.......2007-06-09
The CD begins with the title track, "In The Wee Small Hours." "In The Wee Small Hours" deals with the consequences of a love gone bad--Frank sings of a man who sadly remembers his one true love who left him. The musical arrangement by Nelson Riddle enhances the beauty of this number and Frank delivers this with strength; and the vulnerability in his voice ironically makes his performance much, much stronger and beautiful.
"Mood Indigo" follows; and this song again reflects the usual high level of quality control Sinatra always maintained. He sings "Mood Indigo" passionately and the slow tempo of the arrangement works remarkably well. "I Get Along Without You Very Well" begins with a haunting musical intro and when Frank Sinatra comes in his voice is in excellent form as it is throughout this entire album. Frank delivers this with a degree of sensitivity that I rarely hear from any singer.
"Can't We be Friends" explores the thorny issue of a woman asking Frank if they could now just be friends instead of the lovers they once were. Frank focuses on the frustration and angst he experiences when their love goes wrong. In addition, many people say that "When Your Lover Has Gone" is both an excellent number and a reference to the pain Frank Sinatra felt after Ava Gardner ended their romance and marriage. Frank sings this with the greatest passion and the unmistakable sadness in his trembling voice convinces you he really IS thinking about Ava as he performs this number. Powerful stuff!
"Last Night When We Were Young" again laments a love gone wrong; Frank delivers this number without a single superfluous note. "I'll Be Around" explores the theme of a man waiting for his woman just in case her latest male lover leaves her. The musical arrangement for "I'll Be Around" is played very softly in the background; and this infuses this number with sublime elegance.
"Ill Wind" has a haunting quality to it with its musical arrangement and the incredible pain in Frank's voice; Frank projects the emotional pain of dealing with a lost romance very well. In addition, "Dancing On The Ceiling" approaches the topic of lost love from a different angle--this time Frank fantasizes about his woman dancing on the ceiling as he gazes up at his ceiling after he is in bed for the night.
The track set ends with "This Love Of Mine;" Frank delivers this flawlessly. Frank Sinatra sings so beautifully of how his heart will always belong to his one true sweetheart. "This Love Of Mine" will touch you with its graceful beauty.
The liner notes contain a great essay by Pete Welding. You also get the song credits and recording dates for each song. Larry Walsh at Capitol Recording Studios did a fantastic job of digitally remastering these singularly exquisite ballads.
Frank Sinatra will always remain a legend in the entertainment industry. When Frank sang, you listened--and you listened closely, too, because few singers could ever merely just begin to approach what Frank could do with seemingly little effort. We are all better off for his sharing his talent with us; and this CD will be an automatic "must-have" for Sinatra fans. People who love classic pop vocals and easy listening vocals will treasure this CD forever.
Bravo, Frank!!!

This is one of the three all-ballad albums that John Coltrane recorded in late 1962 and early 1963. Johnny Hartman was apparently Coltrane's suggestion, and his deep, dark voice meshes perfectly here with Coltrane's tenor. The material is well-chosen, including definitive readings of "My One and Only Love" and "Lush Life." McCoy Tyner fills out the chords, augmenting the harmonies and keeping the tone of these ballads respectful but not overly sentimental. All the players get to the deep structure of the songs and are not afraid to play in the most essential and elegant manner. This is beautiful jazz. --Michael MonhartCustomer Reviews:
Superb.......2007-07-14
Hartman is blessed with as clear a baritone voice as you're ever likely to hear. There are a couple of moments on this recording where the Tenor Sax stops and Hartmans voice starts and its completely seamless.
These are all classic ballad songs, so if you're expecting long Coltrane solos forget it. This is mellow, and laid back. Think of Coltrane on the Ballads album but more so. A number of people I've spoken to over the years have used this as springboard to get into Coltrane.
The track listing is:
1. They Say It's Wonderful
2. Dedicated To You
3. My One and Only Love
4. Lush Life
5. You are too beautiful
6. Autumn Serenade
Sadly Hartman doesn't seem to have recorded much else (or its unavailable) but this album from 1963 is an absolute classic.

They Say It's Wonderful.......2007-01-26
Showing Coltrane's mellow and romantic side (also seen on his "My Favorite Things"), this album brings the great and precise vocalist Hartman into Coltrane's classical band and together they create something so delicate and subtle I hardly believed it when I heard it. This means that Tyner's intelligent piano and Garrison's and Jones' unobtrusive rhytmical support are also essential for this musical triumph.
Is it modern jazz? Is it musically conservative? Answers to both questions should probably be in the affirmative; great music is often too complex to be placed in neatly divided groups...
Coltrane's tone is, I must admit, far from being among my favorite sounds in jazz, but on this album even that aspect of his music pleases me very much. He is as light and full of innuendos as the tone of Johnny Hodges, Paul Desmond and Lester Young at their most breazy and mellow, but at the same time the Trane is still strong and autoritative in creating his solos and obligattos.
If I repeat some words in this clumsy description, it is not just because English is not my mother tongue: no language can trully explain these subtle sounds and emotions; only a lyrical poem could suffice (and I'm no poet).
Just listen how Hartman merges with Coltrane and his band from the beginning of "You are too beautiful ...". A true object of beauty.
