The beginning of Phil Collins's massively successful solo career coincided with the discord in his first marriage, turning Face Value into a compelling churn of emotions, from the utter disgust of "In the Air Tonight" (where Collins dryly comments, "If you told me you were drowning / I would not lend a hand") to the delight he feels in exploring a new relationship ("This Must Be Love"). Collins's thundering drums and punchy horn arrangements--a close approximation of Earth, Wind & Fire's sound, actually--clicked with the public, turning "I Missed Again" and "In the Air Tonight" into Top 20 singles and launching Collins's career as one of the biggest and most unlikely stars of the '80s. --Daniel Durchholz

Speaks to Your Soul.......2007-05-30
What can I say? It's Phil Collins, and it's wonderful.
Summer is here !.......2007-05-13
Whenever I listen to Phil Collins music, i think it's summertime. He makes you feel it in the air !! Sun...See...Swimming.. if you know what I mean...
Fantastic Album.......2007-04-03
Phil Collins wrote these lyrics as he experienced the dissolution of his marriage. The lyrics are fantastic. He collaborated with some excellent musicians and created fresh, brilliant sounds. This is a great album.
Huge solo debut by established frontman/drummer..........2007-02-16
1981 - Where do you start? I massively respect Collins as a drummer, producer, soloist, arranger, etc... When he released this album in '81 many thought genesis was through. In fact shortly after it's release genesis was in the studio working on abacab. So that issue was put to rest in a hurry. Collins brought alot of experience to the studio with him including phoenix horns (EWF), eric clapton, shankar, jon martyn, john giblin, daryl stuermer (genesis), & others. Hugh Pagham engineered the album with collins. Hugh Pagham continued to work with collins, genesis, & the police in the 80s. By this time Collins had established himself as a musician who wanted to create & expand & had earned the respect of his peers. The main reason he made this album is because he finally realized (around DUKE 1979-80) that he could write & arrange songs alongside banks & rutherford. Up until then he didn't write much. Around DUKE he brought misunderstanding, in the air tonight, please don't ask, I missed again, & if leaving me is easy to banks/rutherford & they chose misunderstanding & please don't ask for DUKE. They didn't hear a hit in in the air tonight. After the DUKE tour collins used the remiaining tunes for his own album & of course, in the air tonight was huge & still is. The others made it on the album as well. The album as a whole is largely uneven & it encompasses alot of R&B & jazzy sounds which collins enjoyed. Although good, some of the songs sound as if they should be on different albums. The album is largely organic & simplistic. Apart from in the air tonight & hand in hand there is little drum machine. The rest of the album is acoustic drums & persussion. Don't get me wrong, the musicianship is good, just a little inconsistant. There are some good jazzy moments showing Phil's vocal range, solo drumming style, & love for horns (which are awesome) including I missed again, thunder & lightning, & tomorrow never knows (beatles tune). Daryl's guitar work is good but limited & less complex. The roof is leaking is a good acoustic piano tune showing phil's ability to play piano which obviously develops in the 80s (You can hear a Tony Bank's pattern here). In tomorrow never knows there are tracks of hand in hand being played backwards. All in all a classic album showing phil's well-rounded chops & his love for R&B music. It is also a departure from the genesis sound. Many say that when abacab (genesis album following face value) was recorded in late 1981 they could hear a heavier hand of phil collins in the arranging. This is probably true as collins gained alot of confidence in writing & singing. the drumming was obviously not a problem. I think too that genesis lasted longer because they had solo projects. They worked with others & came back with unfinished bits & put them together to make an album. Collins has said it made the group stronger...
Collins' first, best, most well rounded album........2006-07-30
To those unfamiliar with Collins-Genesis history, this album was recorded after Collins took a break from Genesis to dwell on his recent divorce. That is reflected painfully throughout this album in the lyrics to his own songs, and the covers he chose to include, such as the Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows". In no future albums would Collins recapture the soul put into this album, though "Hello, I Must Be Going" might be a slghtly better, more polished album. Painful ballads like the jazzy, smoky "If Leaving Me Is Easy" are balanced by R&B selections like "Missed Again, Thunder and Lightning" the pulsating, toe tapping "Hand in Hand," (appreciated best when played full blast or with head phones), or the jazzier version of the Genesis tune "Behind the Lines". Yet the best selections are indeed the ones that let him bleed from his divorce. "You Know What I Mean (the ballad lead-in to)/Thunder and Lightning" seems the theme to Collins' failed marriage. "This Must Be Love" poses those questions we ask ourselves about our relationships. Of course, we all know about the tune "In the Air Tonight". This album had a 2-fold effect - the introduction of Collins as a genuine soloist, and the rise, or fall (depending on how you look at it) of Genesis. Future Genesis albums would pack more radio play wallup due to Collin's take over in direction, but at the cost of departing from their progressive roots for the sake of commercial success. There have always been 2 such camps in Genesis following, though their earlier fans are more passionate obout that era than the newer fans are about their newer music. Anyone looking for a Genesis type album, look elsewhere. This album was to get the Collins musical side out of his system, to express himself without any Genesis conflicts. Regardless, anyone who's ever had their heart broken or just likes to indulge into some brooding, Face Value is a sumptuous listen.

good cd, bad racording.......2000-12-28
just like i said its a good cd with some awsome solos from their guitarist but the cd sounds like crap because of the recording. It sounds like it was recorded in a garage, but they have a new cd out that sounds awsome,it doesnt lack anything that this cd has except the bad recording. The name of the cd is "Theres Always The Radio". i hope this helps. thanks

One of the best Texan punk/rockabilly bands ever!!!.......2005-05-09
Wow, I can't believe I'm the first to review this album, what an honor. Consider yourself lucky to find either of their albums, I bought both of their albums straight from their label Bettie Rocket Records before the label went out of business. They're self titled album is definately rockabilly, "I lost my mind" is almost straight punk with very little rockabilly influence at all. Its still just as catchy as the self titled album with just as much energy, but this album might be a bit more...hyper I think. War Rocket Ajax is quite unique, and I wish I could find more bands like them.
