The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Custer LaRue is my all-time favorite.......2001-08-30

As I have said before (and will no doubt say again), one cannot go wrong in purchasing an album on the Dorian label. This disc is further justification for me calling them my favorite record label. Brian Levine and all the folks at Dorian deserve a big thanks from every true lover of music.

In spite of what I said about Claire Gignac in my review of "Les Chants d'Eros," Custer LaRue is still my favorite female singer. "Amazing Grace" makes my admiration for her even greater than it was before. She is truly great here.

The songs themselves are wonderful material. A few of them are still common repertoire in some church settings. Most of the songs have become obscure over the years--only finding resurrection in LaRue's performance.

My favorite songs here are "Wondrous Love," "Hold On," and the title track. It is a sign of a great album that is so hard to choose a favorite on "Amazing Grace."

I love the early instruments used in this recording. It puts a new interpretive spin on the songs. The Baltimore Consort are a dazzling collection of artists who are each outstanding players in their own right--the real miracle is how they play so seamlessly together. I look forward to more music from this great ensemble.

In the meantime, I give "Amazing Grace" a full-fledged recommendation.

Awesome voice.......2001-08-18

Custer Larue has a wonderfully light, pure soprano that is well augmented by the various early instruments of the Baltimore Consort, and her unaccompanied rendition of "Amazing Grace" gives me goosebumps! The selections are not "preachy" religion and therefore very listenable. LaRue reminds me of the early Joan Baez; no, she is even better. Heard a selection from this recording on NPR, bought the CD and now want to own everything she ever recorded! A very special, talented group of musicians and Custer LaRue's voice is unforgettable.

Custer LaRue as classical folk musician.......2001-06-10

This album reminds me of Maddy Prior's album of West Gallery music; it does not remind me of the various current releases of early American religious music by choral groups. This is an album that will appeal to folk musicians with a love of the ballad. It also appeals to those interested in lute, bandora, stings etc.; their accompaniment to LaRue's voice is absolutely inspired.

Tauber for the first buyer.......1999-01-02

Richard Tauber was, in my opinion, the most seductive and complex singer of this century. His voice was excellent, but not in itself, just as a vehicle for an infinity of shadings, in a plethora of styles. He was arguably the greatest ever operetta singer but his gifts were perfectly expressing themselves in lied, in popular song and in a great part of the opera repertoire ("heldentenor" excepted). Like Kreisler in violin playing, Tauber represented the essence of the Viennese spirit. His vocal specialties included the sweteest mezzavoce or headvoice one could hope for. He was accessible and highly refined in the same time. For the very low price of this Gala CD, you can taste the complex artistry of Richard Tauber, both in his German (better) period and in the "English" one. The reason I'm giving 4, not 5 stars to this CD is that I believe his all-German CD concotions to be more valuable. But for this price...

Quiet/Loud patterned melodic indie rock. Good stuff. Shelkett has a very distinct voice. It's sad that Cross my heart aren't around anymore. But to fill that void, check out Dead red sea and liars academy.

I just kind of bought this Album on a wim. I listen to the samples on the Amason and though it was cathy. It has hints of bands like Knapsack, Hey Mercedies, and Jets to Brazil. It got some pretty up eat guitar riffs and some catchy beats.

My friends brother let me borrow this CD. when i first listened to it i thought it was pretty good but after really listening to it, the lyrics really grew on me! it's great to listen to right before you go to sleep or whatever. it's just really good!

A really good cd. Not as good as thier first ep, but still good stuff. If anyone is intrested they have another ep on deep elm titled The Reason I Failed History. Supplies are limited

It grows on you.......2000-09-23

This CD is head and shoulders over their debut EP. When you first listen to it, nothings sticks out in particular. Later, when you're at work, sitting in class, this hummable melody gets in your head and you aren't quite sure where it came from. A little later you listen to this again and bang! there it is, track 2, tonight we light ourselves on fire. The other songs do the same thing to you. Very good!
