One among a field of up-and-coming U.K. producers--such as The Nextmen, Runaways UK, and Rae and Christian--Simon Gilbert and Julian Baker, a.k.a. the Creators, offer one more beat bridge across the Atlantic. While some of their British compatriots choose a jazzier approach, the Creators favor a harder edge, whether it's the dramatic bells of "The Music" (featuring El Da Sensei), or eerie clavinet stabs on "Kronkite" (featuring Phil Da Agony). Like many compilation-based projects, the scorecard gets a little overwhelming--over 15 artists to keep track of. As nice as their beats can be (check the uptempo vibe of "No Love" with F.T.), there's little consistency between efforts. Not helping much are the 13 skits that shatter the pacing of the album's song progression. Oddly too, the whole album seems U.S.-centric; no native U.K. MCs need apply. Overall, The Weight certainly has its moments but lacks the crucial chemistry to pull it all together. --Oliver Wang

Not Your Average Weight Loss CD! .......2005-04-04

The first time I listened to this meditation I could feel the weight leave me - except it wasn't physical pounds, but an emotional heaviness. The author asks you to find the place inside of your self that doesn't feel worthy of perfect health and love. Wow! It blew me away because many other "weight loss" meditation CDs focus on mental conditioning ... like you're going to train yourself to love asparagus. But this CD asked me to examine the emotional reasons why I am not at my perfect weight. Why don't I inhabit the body I would be most comfortable in right now? When I really started to think about it - it actually made me cry .... because I realized, there's a part of me hanging onto this weight! There's a part of me that feels very unworthy ... and the physical manifestation of this unhappiness is excess weight. Needless to say, this CD has really helped transform how I view myself. It is always good to STOP and honor your body. When you're overweight, it's easy to have a litany of negative thoughts about your appearance constantly running through your mind. I think meditation is the most loving step you can take towards releasing excess weight.

I gave this cd to a friend of mine with a weight problem because I've had such good results with the other meditations in my own life. Nothing seemed to work that well for her but i think this cd reallyt did make a difference. It's the same principle as the others, bringing you to a new way of thinking about and looking at yourself. Maria was able to visualize and accept aspects of herself she hadn't before. She's looking better every week. Diet and exercise are crucial, but i think this is the missing element in a truly transforming process. She's looking great!

OK Rollins devotees, get your mouse fingers ready to give this review a negative vote!

Circa '94 Rollins was a demi god so I bought this ablum - what a waste of my hard earned!

Rollins is blessed with a somewhat evocative voice and a set of biceps that, like Pete Steele, got the ladies in a flutter. And he's able to speak intelligently which is always a bonus. But he also has a downside - a very pessimistic view of things that permeates this record to it's core. He also has virtually no ability to pen much of a musical melody. His almost conversational style of lyric delivery borders on rapping (see track 4 - Civilised). He also, at least on this record, has too much emphasis on his vox and the band aren't up far enough in the mix.

And really there's no point trying to outweigh the bad here with the good because there is almost no good. There are some tasty bass lines here but that's about it. Too much hi-hat drumming, too much 'done me wrong' whining and while this perhaps caught some attention from the 90's slacker generation the fact that this and all subsequent Rollins Band albums stiffed is a pretty fair indication of how little rapport with his audience Henry had. Really, anybody who scored THAT much spin doctoring should of been selling millions.

As for some more musically specific reasons not to buy this. How about the loose, morbid song structurs. On almost every track. Or the boring arrangements. They've used a bit of jumping around (from boring motif to boring motif) to stop the listener getting comfortable since then they'd realise that there were no real chords or hooks to sustain interest in the songs main musical theme. Or that there is hardly a decent riff on the whole thing (except Wrong Man) and it's the bass that drives the songs - that's when they are being driven at all. Perhaps if you could extract the lyrics here and glue them onto a Korn album you'd have a perfectly acceptable nu-metal album. But - as I write in 2007 - not even Korn are so one dimensional as the collection of lyrical concerns here addressed.

No wonder ol' Henry has since concentrated on his spoken word tours where he is apparently a far more engaging listen. And it's probably a hell of a lot cheaper than taking a band out on tour.

Hanks Takes.......2006-11-15

This is one of the best Rollins albums. This is the culmination of Melvin Gibbs stellar bass playing, "sugar" Sim Cain on the skins, Chris Haskett on the 6 string thing and Henry Rollins- throat. Perhaps his best lineup to date- although his current lineup is really good. Rollins destroys all comers on this one and calls out gun toting gangster wannabes on the powerful "Civilized" - getting your mind off some guys record, he makes his money off fools like you, singing about killing like it ain't no thing, but you do the time when you're living for real, paying his way from your death row cell, you're the last one to see you got sold out! Disconnect is another great track with a consatnt groove going on, the video has Henry recalling a Deniro-like Taxi role- classic. The version of this disc to grab is the remastered one with 4 bonus live tracks all from this album. The highlight of the live tracks would be "liar" played in England with Henry agging on the British crowd as they chant back at him- "you can chant all you want and all your voices put together aren't as loud as mine" "you know all those things I've said about you all these years- about your shi&&y music and your shi^^y food...I'm sorry" "I'm the one who makes you forget this shi&&y little rainy country you live in" And check out Melvin Gibss bass lines on the live "Civilized"- classic. rollins' finest moment, post Black Flag.......2005-08-06

I'm not much of a fan of the cottage industry known as Henry Rollins, inc., but "Weight" has to be the musclebound ex-Black Flag singer's best work after Black Flag, of course.
What makes this Rollins Band album work so well is the players and their chemistry. The lineup has since changed, but this incarnation of the band is solid and absolutely powerful. The addition of bassist Melvin Gibbs gives the band a fluid, jazzy rhythm foundation that locks in well with Sim Cain's drumming, and Chris Haskett lets loose with some of his best guitar playing. Haskett is a tasteful player who utilizes space and minimal amounts of notes for maximum impact, ala David Gilmour, which I suppose wouldn't be an altogether unfathomable comparison. The grooves that the band creates almost comes close to upstaging its namesake at times, but Rollins still has plenty to shout about. There are only a few weak(er) tracks here--"Tired," "Step Back" and "Shine," which seems as if Rollins is preaching a bit too much in the latter. These tracks are weaker, lyrically, than what is expected from such a poetic lyricist as Rollins. Anger is the primary emotion Rollins is about in his lyrics, but he conveys it pretty well on "Weight." Songs like "Disconnect" and "Civilized" effectively communicate Rollins' anger and feelings of hatred toward those who have the misfortune of getting on his bad side.

Produced with Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla, The Weight is a Gift is a less elliptical musical offering than Let Go. Just as that 2003 recording put Nada Surf back on the map, after several years stuck in post-major label limbo, their fourth full-length proves its success was no fluke. As before, singer/guitarist Matthew Caws is as much lovesick dreamer as pop culture junkie. Last time around, he was extolling the pleasures of Blonde on Blonde, now it's Paris, Texas ("Comes a Time") and "Lenny Bruce's Bug Eyes" ("Imaginary Friends"). Ultimately though, it's the more emotionally direct material that leaves the biggest impression, like "Your Legs Grow" and "Always Love" (the only song that sounds a little like Death Cab). The one exception would be the fuzzed-out, but still poppy "The Blankest Year," which deviates into darker territory, like the Hollies covering Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Average at best. What happened? (3 stars).......2007-01-26

I know this isn't going to necessarily be a popular opinion, but I don't think this album has much going for it. Please, if you are considering purchasing this album get a pair of headphones and listen to the samples first. The first few tracks were strong, but it certainly tailed off. I suppose after the surprise classic 'Let Go' I may have been expecting too much. But that piece of work was head, shoulders, and belly button above 'the weight...' both lyrically and instrumentally. If you are looking for a 'blonde on blonde' type of track, you are not going to find it here. Am I dissapointed? Yes. Will I still give the next Nada Surf album a listen? Of course... but I wont be expecting too much if this album was any indication.

A must own for any loyal Barsuk lover.......2007-01-12

I am a loyal patron of the Barsuk label, and this album is truly one of my current faves. It is a little Death Cab mixed with a hint of Goo Goo Dolls. Best song by far on the album is of course "Always Love." For anyone who is considering purchasing this album I do recommend it. However, if you are not really into mellow indie then it may not be for you.

The first 6 songs would have made a truly perfect album. I have no idea what "Your Legs Grow" is about, but it's a beautiful sounding tune. So are "Always Love", "Concrete Bed" and "Do It Again." I agree with the Amazon reviewer: the best songs here the emotionally direct songs and it would serve Nada Surf well to expand on this style of song on future releases.

How to evolve.......2006-10-12

The last Nada Surf record I listened to was their first with the funny song 'Popular', the rest of the album I dismissed for being too much like Weezer. Now they are a lot like more sophisticated (soundwise) bands like Death Cab. It's always good to see this kind of evolution in a bands sound. They are still not my favorite band and they will probably never be, but it's a good record to listen to nonetheless

Pop perfection.......2006-08-11

On "The Weight is a Gift" Nada Surf isn't doing anything it hasn't done before.

Thank God.

Matthew Caws, Nada Surf's primary songwriter, keeps adding to his already lengthy and impressive musical resume on this album. Songs with jangly and gauzy guitar lines and unforgettable vocal melodies ('Concrete Bed,' 'Always Love,') rub elbows with more moody explorations that are still as sweet as rock candy ('Do it Again,' 'What is Your Secret?').

'Your Legs Grow' floats through the air and ends with a brief deviation into acoustic strumming and ethereal drones. I could do without 'All is a Game' and 'Armies Walk' because they sound tossed off and unfulfilled, but the band answers those mistakes with the superb 'Blankest Year,' which jaunts through its two minutes. 'In the Mirror' and 'Imaginary Friends' are other memorable highlights.

This album is just another example of a band whose best work came well after they faded from the critical eye of major labels and big-market radio.

'Nuff said, except for this: 'Fools' -- a simple, sliding, one-string guitar line with a lilting vocal delivery -- may be the best song of this whole collection; why it's relegated to the bonus disc is beyond me.

All in all, "The Weight is a Gift" is an album that may not grab you immediately, but upon repeated listens its masterful balance of melody and muscianship becomes evident.

Soothing.......2006-11-17

The CD has mystical type music, Christopher Love narrates and has a wonderfully soothing voice. He works on getting you relaxed, walks you through white light visualizations, then when you are deeply relaxed talks about healthy weight and body. I listened to it before bed. It made me feel very good and I slept very deeply and well. I woke up feeling both energetic and very peaceful inside. I like its spiritual message of oneness, which the other self hypnosis tapes and CDs I researched did not include. I plan to purchase more of his CDs on self hypnosis since this one is exactly what I was looking for.

Tina has done a great job in making something so positive available to anyone concerned with weight/body image issues. The hypnotherapy is very relaxing and we listen to it when we go to bed. I just recently purchased this cd and was anxious to listen to it. I think it is an excellent weight management cd to listen to. I have listened to it all the way through on one occasion and the other times I find that I fall asleep part way through it. Very helpful.......2007-01-02

I have not tried meditation for weight loss before, so this is my first attempt using meditation with a guided CD. I find the CD to be very helpful. I get anxious when i'm confronted with food, which often sabotages me more than anything else. This CD helps me relax, by listening to it before i'm confronted with a lot of food. The one line sayings in each meditation stick in my brain, and I definitely find that I am more mindful of what I eat. It helps me feel more in control. Meditations are easy to listen to, and most are relatively short for someone who is busy. Even the 6 minute meditation is very helpful, and even the busiest of people should be able to fit it in. It was very relaxing and I come out of it feeling refreshed.

Allen Holmquist's MEDITATIONS FOR WEIGHT LOSS is a wonderful tool to be used in conjunction with relaxation and weight loss theraphy. Mr. Holmquist has a very convincing, soothing voice and this CD was just what I was looking for. As everyone knows, diets don't work so we have to work on feeding our hungry minds and emotions as much as what we put in our mouths. I listen to this tape every morning before I begin my day and it is puts me in such a great mood and relaxes all my tensions away. Meditation should be an integral part of all of our lives but so often we can't afford or don't have the time for personal hypnosis theraphy on a regular basis. This CD gives you all the tools you need to get to that subconcsious place you want to be. Every day of my life someone told me I wasn't OK in some form or another because I was fat. I am now reprogramming my mind to accept a new way of thinking and living--without negativity! Thank you, Mr. Holmquist, for helping to improve my life. This is a very relaxing and soothing cd, all the music and words make perfect sense on how the innerself thinks and feels. It makes the thought of loosing weight just a little more enjoyable..actually a lot more enjoyable......a must to try.....Only one place i felt needed work was the very first of the cd could have used just a little bit more introductory music before the meditation of words begin.

Cravings gone- it does work!.......2005-05-06

I've been to hypnotherapists in person, and had other tapes- but this one truly is the best. Not only does Dr. "Mac" Williamson have a commanding presence that comes right through on the CD, the approach is unique. He brings you to be able to accept control and discipline as a way to happiness, the kind of joy that sweets will never fulfill. The good doctor passed away recently, but I am glad to have this legacy with me. Reading his history at the mindwavez website is extremely impressive- 35 years in mental health and endless accolades from clients and friends. His lilting Scottish brogue makes the CD that much more enjoyable and effective. Oh, 10 lbs so far and counting down quickly!

A Fabulous Find.......2002-01-22

This is definitely the best gift that Santa left in my stocking this year. I had no idea that a weight reduction product could be so motivating and empowering. It even stimulated me to begin my recurring New Year's Resolution of slimming down a few days before January 1st!

I have lost seven pounds and am honestly enjoying the "journey," as Dr. Williamson so creatively terms the process. The imagery is lovely and provides a very calming influence. I look forward to relaxing with my CD everyday after work. It is refreshing and I'm proud to be making healthy choices and decisions.

Thank you Mindwavez for producing such a valuable aid for those of us struggling with weight. You've made the victory of reclaiming my proper body size a lot closer and more rewarding.

Amazing!.......2007-03-23

I absolutely love this band; incredible vocals and music. My only Quam has nothing to do with the band at all. "Veda" is totally NOT their name! It's "Vedera"! I'm guessing it's a miss print, but the music is still AMAZING!

Hard hitting whithout being hard.......2006-07-02

("I love heavy stuff...yet I love them too!) They were an opener for Thrice(along with the Bled, Underoath, and maybe another band...can't remember...) at a show in SD. First off, seeing them live is better because you feel the drums loudness hit you and see the perfection of the vocals. They were the only low noise band at the show-they stil held the audiences attention... that says a lot... because if you've been to concerts with mixes of music you know how easy one "Booo" starts a revolt of kinds. Anyways, I love hearing the drums, actually. They're simple, yet strong and solid. However this CDs flaw is the lack of diversity. The band should mix up the sound from song to song or push the vocals to a yell, whisper, or anything different at times. Don't get me wrong...the girl has an AMAZING voice, yet with all that goes on in these songs...sometimes you find yourself bored. Each song is strong....overall feel needs work. Check out this band live.

.I've seen Veda play live several, several times. I do believe I was at the very first show that they ever played, at a small venue, and I remember hearing Kristen May's voice from outside during sound checks. I fell in love.
.I believe that the reason Veda has made it as far as they have is because of Kristen's vocals. She has such control over her voice, and she really shows that on their first album. She encompasses a sort of beauty and creativity with the vocal lines that she wails. Not to mention her lyrics are touching and incredible as well. The lead guitar really adds to Kristen voice and rhythm guitar, making things a little more ambient, more complex. The music itself isn't really complex, the chord progressions are simple and clean, but in most all of the songs, each instrument stands out to make it's own. For instance, in "Moments Rewound", listen to the bass guitar. It really makes the song come together.
.This album as such an amazing sense of energy. It's the kind of album you pop in your car CD player and let it roll over and over again. Starting out with "Trade this Fear" was an excellent idea, since it's crammed with energy and Kristen is basically saying, "Yeah, you're gonna like this." Although, I do think that ending the album on an acoustic note was poor,
.I would strongly recommend purchasing this album. It's well worth the money and time spent listening.

Something Natural.......2005-08-30

Hey, guess what? I saw them open in front of Dredg too! Seems that this tour is doing them a lot of good. And that's great, because they deserve it.

What struck me about Veda is that there really is nothing to decipher about them. I can admire that as long as the music is good, and it is. Kristen isn't overpowering as a vocalist, but commands everyone's attention with it. The music hints at an urge to break out in to greatness just below the surface. During their live preformance, Brian wailed his guitar in a very U2/Coldplay fashion which was invigorating. Sadly, it all gets muted on the actual album.

If Veda could capture the blossoming power of their live act and put it in to their next album, they could easily be on their way to something great. Kristen, you have the voice! Use it! The only track that I felt you really had fun with your beauty was "It's All Happening on Broadway" (and subsequently is my favorite track on the album). You nearly get there with tracks like, "For a Friend" ("and we sing...") and "Trade this Fear" with your throaty growls. It's amazing what you can do, just showcase it. Test yourself more often and stretch your range as far as it can go.

And don't be afraid to let the music shine, too. Let the reverb on the guitar explore the studio space next time. Let the drums out of their cage and have some fun. Why not have a bass solo or let it follow in the footsteps of Kristen's voice? There's so much Veda could be doing (and is completely able to do) that could make them something really special.

Until that time, this is an admirable start for Veda. There is something completely natural about the music they make and I hope they get a chance to share that with as many people as possible. They'll be going back on tour soon with Thrice and I highly suggest you check them out. Love and Peace!
